Remington Stallard is a fresh face to music. You will be able the join the young artist as he embarks on a new stepping stone in the music world at Common Grounds. His debut album is titled Horse and features the song “For My Bride.” It’s a soft track that displays Stallard’s indie rock style and his strong faith through the lyrics.

The Waco native is currently attending McLennan Community College and trying to make his way in the music business. His life is faith based and you can tell in several of his songs. In “For My Bride”, he sings about loving his future bride as Christ does the church. He also has a track entitled “Lost Son”, which is about God’s grace towards even the most “lost” of sons. You can download Horse digitally on April 15, but in the meantime, you can join Remington Stallard at Common Grounds Friday April 11. Doors open at 7:30pm with opener Abby Baker starting the show at 8pm, Glenmerle at 8:30, and Stallard playing at 9:30pm. Tickets are $7.

NICK CANNON Album: White People Party Music

Rating: Reviewed by Katy De Luna His last album didn’t make a peep 11 years ago, but his second album, White People Party Music, has been making a roar. Nick Cannon’s newest album has started a controversy leading some people to call Nick Cannon, A.K.A. Mr. Mariah Carey, a racist. And it doesn’t help that Cannon dressed in “whiteface” (where a non-white person paints their face white and acts like a stereotyped white person)--a new term that has come out of the controversy to promote the album. Something to keep in mind when deciding what side of the controversy you are on is that Nick Cannon is a comedian and the album was dropped on April Fools Day. In an interview with Access Hollywood, he said his album was made for nothing more than pure fun and that there is a difference between being racist and just being humorous. He stated that it is a real album but meant to be a joke. The music itself is a mix of genres, from EDM to soul to pop-rock. Songs like “Me Sexy” is similar to anything LMFAO has put out, with humorous lyrics like, “S-E-X-Y, we don’t need no alibi. We’re sexy.” White People Party Music features Akon, Pitbull, R. Kelly and Afrojack on tracks and the song “Unbelievable” that was written for his wife Mariah Carey.

After being on a hiatus since 2007, Nickel Creek is returning to the music scene and reviving their collaborative career with their latest album A Dotted Line. The bluegrass trio, comprised of Chris Thile on mandolin, Sara Watkins on fiddle, and Sean Watkins on guitar, is releasing their newest album in correlation with the band’s 25th anniversary. A Dotted Line contains a cover of Mother Mother’s “Hayloft” and Sam Phillips’ “Where is Love Now” and has a ten-track set list that showcases the instrumentation of the band’s members. Many of the other tracks, including “Elephant in the Corn” and “Destination”, draw from the solo careers each member embarked upon during their hiatus. For fans old and new, A Dotted Line showcases a tenderness and relaxed “feels.” The band is kicking off a tour in April.

Christina Perri recently released her sophomore album Head or Heart. Most people say that surviving the sophomore curse is tough for any new artist; however, Perri’s new album demonstrates that she’s breaking that curse. Head or Heart delivers 48 minutes of true confidence, emotion, and passionate lyrics. Perri really begins to explore new content and demonstrates outstanding vocal technique. A true downside to Head or Heart is that we’ve heard this sound so many times already, and it just fails to bring anything new to the table. However, overall the album puts Perri at the top of her mountain, at her best lyrically and vocally.

The Brazos Nights Concert Series consists of a series of four concerts hosting a diverse range of bands and entertainment. Individuals are free to bring small coolers, as long as there are no glass containers. But, if you don’t want to worry about bringing your own food, you will be able to choose from various food options once you’re there, such as hamburgers, corn dogs, and snow cones. They’ll also be selling beer and wine, and don’t forget to look for the food trucks that will be there, too.

Among the list of performers is Stanley Dural, Jr., better known by his stage name Buckwheat Zydeco. Buckwheat Zydeco is an American accordionist zydeco musician, a genre which mixes Cajun music, blues, and R&B. Buckwheat has performed with famous musicians including Eric Clapton and U2, and his band performed at the closing ceremonies of the 1996 Summer Olympics. Also on the Brazos Nights lineup is Whiskey Myers, a country group who has released two albums, with their latest, Firewater, debuting in the Top 30 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart in 2011. Accompanying Whiskey Myers is the Toadies, the popular ‘90s group from Fort Worth. The alternative rock group is often associated with their most popular tune, “Possum Kingdom.”

THE WOMEN OF DUCK COMMANDER by kay, korie, missy, jessica, and lisa robertson “Duck Dynasty” is the most popular reality series on television. And now, the wives of the show’s stars have penned a book entitled The Women of Duck Commander. The book is an honest tell-all about their lives, trials, and triumphs, and it contains not only quirky and fun stories but encouraging ones as well. “Miss Kay” pens a truthful story that delves into her relationship with Phil, the head of the family, chronicling his rowdy years. It also delves into the obstacles she’s faced as a teenage mother. Korie, Willie’s wife, recounts her first meeting with Phil and how he told her to keep a mindful eye on his sons, as they would make great husbands. She talks about her parents’ responses when she informed them she would be getting married at the age of eighteen. Missy, married to Jase, tells the story of her daughter Mia’s medical condition, cleft palate. She talks about their journey with the condition and how Mia’s positivity and happiness was an inspiration to the family. Jessica depicts her first conversation with Jep, who boasted about his Duck Commander father, whom Jessica had never heard of. Lisa gets honest about her marriage to Alan, all the obstacles that came their way, and the strength and love that resulted from them.

Love Letters To The Dead is too beautiful, too meaningful, and too heartbreaking to describe with words. At times, it’s young, shy, poetic. Other times, there’s so much pathos it’s overwhelming. Love Letters is about letting go and finding yourself. Laurel, the story’s narrator, is affected by her sister’s death, mainly because she feels guilty and also because nobody talks about what happened. Her mother chooses to run away while her dad is always watching baseball games or focusing on work. The thing is, she doesn’t think it’s okay to talk about it with anyone either. So, she doesn’t.
Tempting Fate is the story of Gaby Cartwright, a middle-age housewife and mother.
Love Letters To The Dead is a story with a beating heart, beautifully crafted, bittersweet, and poignant, about finding the strength to carry on and finding the person you need to be when challenges strike.
It’s one of those novels that you even want to physically start yelling at, hoping in vain that you can get through to the characters and stop them from making such a mess of their lives.
When a mild flirtation over a drink with someone who is not her husband spirals into an obsession, it tears her world apart. Tempting Fate is an intelligent, thought-provoking, true-to-life book. While reading it, you’ll course through a range of feelings, from anger to disgust, sadness to happiness.

Celebrate Waco Brings Attention to Downtown By Sara Gilmore
The Waco Symphony Council is inviting residents of Waco to celebrate the resurgence of the downtown area and the renovation of the Hippodrome Theater this weekend by participating in the many events they’ve planned for a two-day event they’re calling Celebrate Waco. The event raises money for the Waco Symphony and is the largest scale fundraiser the council has ever planned — one that’s been in the works for nearly a year. The point is to not only raise money for the symphony but to raise the level of support and excitement around the growth of our city’s downtown district. “The vitality of a city depends on organizations and individuals who work together to bring substance and life to the entire community,” said Celebrate Waco Chair Shelly Phipps. “The need to preserve the historical elements is crucial to the culture and revitalization of Waco.” The Waco Symphony Council supports the notion that a downtown area that offers quality living, dining, family activities, arts & entertainment and walkability will result in a healthier, more sustainable city. The council intends to put all of the above on display during the weekend’s events.
“You’ll be greeted with vendors ranging from local boutiques, to non-profits promoting their cause, to ways to go sail-gating at the new stadium. Plus, we’ll have a food truck park, children’s creative corner, and finish off with a glimpse of the newly renovated Hippodrome,” said Alison Sorely, Merchant Vendor and Food Truck Chair.
The event officially kicks off on Friday night, though, with a special “A Night With Gatsby” preview party at the Palladium. As the honored guests of Mr. Gatsby, attendees are encouraged to don their swankiest attire and join the dappers and flappers for a roaring night filled with music, art, hors d’oeurves, beverages and a signature cocktail.

The main attraction for the event is the Sharp Flat’s guided loft tour. The tour will be a first look into five lofts, all located on Austin Ave., along with a hard hat tour of the Hippodrome Theater. Two of the lofts included on the tour are currently for sale, so if you’re in the market for downtown living, you don’t want to miss this part of the weekend. In addition to seeing the lofts, there will be local sips and tastes available throughout the tour. Featured vendors include 1424 Bistro, The Secret Chef, The Olive Branch, The Mix Cafe, and Brotherwell Brewery, which is debuting its beer for the very first time at the event. “Having moved to Waco from New York City where I lived in a loft apartment for the past 5 years, I am blown-away by the attention to detail in which each loft was carefully reconstructed and designed,” said Casey Hooper, Loft Tour Chair. “The ‘Sharp Flats’ Loft Tours are a great way to see and experience downtown living at its finest. It’s an opportunity you don’t want to miss.” Tickets for the loft tours are $15 for adults and $10 for children ages 10-18. Downtown Diva Dash By Kelly Porter If you’re looking for a fresh, new race to try out this spring, Downtown Diva Dash may be just what you’re looking for. The first-ever Downtown Diva Dash is coming to Downtown Waco on April 12th, courtesy of the Waco Symphony Council. Registration begins at 8am and runners/walkers will start at Austin Avenue at 9:30am. After that, they’ll enjoy a pleasant one-mile trip through Downtown. Afterwards, they’ll have Mimosas and you’ll get a complimentary champagne glass. In addition, you will also receive a t-shirt to forever immortalize the glorious day you unleashed your inner Diva. Post-race celebration and tours officially begin at 10am. You will have the opportunity to tour five different lofts and get a tour of the Hippodrome Theater. To continue the celebration, there will be booths Downtown for you to browse through as well as a food truck park for eats. Tickets for the event can be purchased online. And don’t let the name fool you; guys are more than welcome to participate, too.
Sharp Flats Loft Tours By Kelly Porter
The recent renovation of the Hippodrome Theater in Downtown Waco is fostering community involvement as they let patrons see the outcome of the overhaul. The unveiling is part of Celebrate Waco, “a celebration of Waco's downtown resurgence and newly renovated Hippodrome Theater. This fundraiser highlights the value that a lively downtown community brings to a city.” One of the many festivities that will be happening on Saturday, April 12 is the Sharp Flat’s Guided Loft Tour. In the tour, you will get to look at five different lofts on Austin Avenue along with a hard hat tour of the Hippodrome Theater. The Hippodrome has been completely revamped; no more peeling paint – the Theater has been rejuvenated and now welcomes people to explore its new conception. The only downside to the renovation is that the theater was not improved to allow for larger shows; but smaller shows are still welcome and anticipated to fill the space. Included in the tour is a Sharp Flats Loft Tour canvas tote bag with tastes of local flavors offered during the tour. Vendors featured include The Secret Chef, The Olive Branch, The Mix Cafe, and more. There will also be merchant vendors and food trucks lining the street, so be sure to bring your wallet. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for individuals 10-18. Make sure to stop by the Hippodrome lobby and sign up for your preferred tour time. Tours begin at 10am and depart every 30 minutes from the lobby. The tour lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes and the last tour leaves at 3pm.

•••••• The island in my kitchen is a mountain of cookbooks, recipe clippings, a “fruit bowl” holding dried peppers and papery onion skins, a nearly empty wine bottle, banana loaf crumbs, a planner opened to last week, and a Guggenheim-shaped mug containing an inch of tepid coffee. Some days, I fly between the house and the restaurant in grease-stained sneakers, trailing a floury apron and feeling wild and fulfilled and busy. Other days, it’s just me and the dogs and my own willpower. I try to ignore things like laundry and focus on things like writing, taking photos, emailing clients, and reading about JavaScript. These are the days when I take time for the solitude that all creatives need. Still, when I’m by myself all day, it’s easy to feel like what I’m doing doesn’t amount to much, that’s it’s not actually leading anywhere. Other times, I’m so happy that this is the path I’m whacking away at. Last weekend, I got the chance to visit with family I hadn’t seen in a while. Looking at an earlier generation of women with a new perspective, I respected them in ways I never could have before growing up. They seemed so sure of themselves and so capable. I’m sure many people feel this way, but I get nervous about family events because I think I’ll be asked to show my cards. My cousins go to med school or are international human rights activists or petroleum engineers in the Middle East. And me saying “Well, I work at the restaurant, and when I’m not doing that, I write and cook and take photos of food in my house. And I’ve started doing web design” can feel a little less...polished. It felt good to hear these women in the generation before me say things like “I’m proud of you,” and “You’re making your own way.” I went home feeling that I might actually be on track--if not a traditional one, a valid one. Sometimes you need to hear your life through someone else’s words. We were together to remember my aunt -- Instead of my one-dimensional experience of my aunt, I heard her friends and family and colleagues, and even one of her teachers, describing her character by telling stories about the things she did. We’re always told not to let other people define us, but there are times when the words of others show us a fuller picture of a person. I left thinking that sometimes you need to listen to a whole community’s characterization of a person, even if that person is yourself, before deciding you know all her layers. After the services on Saturday, we ended up at my grandpa’s house, sorting through objects that pile up in cupboards over decades. I uncovered a gem: The Grove Volunteer Fire Fighters’ Cookbook. My grandpa and his brothers and sisters grew up in a tiny speck of a town outside McGregor-The Grove, Texas. Reading through the recipes made me feel closer to the family, as if in knowing their food I would know them. Since I’m me, I changed this recipe for Banana Bread so that it includes coconut oil and agave nectar. Each generation leaves a mark, right?

Chocolate Chip Banana Loaf with Coconut Oil (Makes 8 x 4 loaf pan) Adapted from The Grove Volunteer Firefighters’ Cookbook
Using mini chocolate chips is important here. It keeps them from sinking, I think, and the mini chips are better distributed throughout the cake. Even as it cools, the chips don’t get too crunchy but are little subtle bits of texture, so they don’t compete with the gooey, comforting texture of banana bread. Ingredients: 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour 1 ¼ teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon coarse salt ⅔ cup agave nectar ⅓ cup coconut oil 2 eggs 2 medium very ripe bananas, mashed ½ cup mini chocolate chips Directions: 1. Oven at 350 F. Prepare an 8 x 4 loaf pan: grease bottom and sides and coat with flour, then make a sling out of parchment paper. Set aside. 2. In separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside. 3. In small bowl, mash bananas and set aside.
4. In a third bowl, whisk together agave nectar and coconut oil until smooth, then whisk in eggs one at a time. Whisk in bananas until most clumps are dissolved. 5. Make a well in the flour bowl and pour banana mixture into the center. Use a wooden spoon to mix, stirring gently. Do not overmix. When there are a still a few remaining stripes of flour in the batter, add mini chocolate chips and stir just until combined. 6. Pour batter out into prepared pan. Bang gently down on the counter a few times to release any air bubbles. Bake for 40-50 minutes, checking that a skewer or knife comes out clean. Cool on wire rack for 15 minutes, then turn out of pan, slice, and serve. Keeps wrapped in plastic for up to 4 days.

Maps Measure uses Google Maps and allows you to measure as many pointto-point distances as you want. The cool thing is that unlike Google Maps alone, you can measure distances of places that don’t have an address. It is a great tool for planning out walks or jogging trails. You’ll learn if that track really is a mile or if that 5k is actually 5k, but most of all you’ll learn that Grandpa lied; he only walked half a mile to and from school. It’s your choice if you call him out or not. Join the fun at Beach – N – Bikerfest April 11 – 13 at the South Padre Island Convention Center. All the action goes on at Friday 9pm – 12am, Saturday 9am – 1am, and Sunday 9am – 4pm. Friday: Beach – N – Bikerfest starts moving at 10am with Biker Rodeo located in the East Lot followed by Biker Games Practice Sessions. You’ll be able to ride or watch as the bikers get ready for the actual Biker Games on Saturday. If you cannot wait for Saturday, the Dyno Drags is ongoing throughout the day. Riders can show everyone what they are made of by entering the drag race, and trophies are awarded to each division winner. It is sure to be a show whether you’re in the driver seat or watching from the crowd. Playing on the main stage is an array of classic rock bands and plenty of tribute bands to add to the rocking vibe that is typically associated with a bike rally. The event will host bands such as David Lee Garza, Ram Herrera and Los Gatos Locos. Saturday: The Bike Show starts at 10am and you can gaze at all the custom bikes that come in from all over the nation. Enter in your own bike, but be sure to register before noon on Saturday for your chance to win the grand prize. At 4pm you will want to head over to Pirates Cove to see the spectacular Biker Parade. It starts at 5pm as hundreds of bikers will ride from Port Isabel over Queen Isabel Causeway to South Padre Island. Throughout the day there will be tribute bands playing, a Tattoo Contest, Burnout Contest, and more friendly competition to keep your motor running the whole event. When you need a little rest, remember to stop by any of the rally vendors for any Harely-Davidson merchandise, custom bike leather, tattoos, and much more. Sunday: Sunday consists of Biker Church, Christian Rock, and Kids field events. Bring the whole family for fun events tailored towards children. Don’t worry, the kids will not be riding around on a motorcycle by themselves; but they will complete obstacle courses on a bicycle.

Netflix Review: Stuck in Love Captain America: The Winter Soldier Action (PG-13)
Marvel has done it again. Capitalizing on the public’s obsession with superheroes and extremely fit men, Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier gives the people want they want with numerous shots of Chris Evan’s veiny biceps in his return as Steve Rogers, aka Captain America. The Winter Soldier is the franchise’s latest installment associated with the Avengers, but this movie isn’t the sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger; instead, you’ll have needed to watch The Avengers to understand some of the events referenced in this film.

If you want a new film to watch that’s a bit higher quality that Sharknado, Stuck in Love is a great place to start. Starring Greg Kinnear (Little Miss Sunshine, Heaven is For Real), Jennifer Connelly (Noah), Lily Collins (The Blind Side), Nat Wolff (Palo Alto, The Fault in Our Stars), and Logan Lerman (Perks of Being a Wallflower, Noah), the independent film was written and directed by Josh Boone, the same guy who’s bringing the best-selling Josh Green novel, The Fault in Our In The Winter Soldier, directed by Russo brothers Anthony and Joe, Steve Rogers struggles to embrace Stars, to the big screen. his role in the modern world and battles a new threat from old history: the Soviet agent known as the Winter Soldier.
