Changing leagues, sheds and times
West Allotment Celtic were formed in 1928, the culmination of a merger between West Allotment Primitive Methodists and West Allotment Juniors. After moving to the newlycreated Tynemouth & District League in 1935, the club began to rapdily grow in terms of its stature.
In 1938, the club took the decision to move up, joining the Second Division of the Northern Amateur League. Now playing their football at the aptly-named Farm Ground, fans helped to dismantle a cowshed in Heaton and move it, piece by piece, to West Allotment, where it was reassembled at the ground. The shed was not for spectators – it served as the players’ changing facilities!
Allotment had to face Whitley Bay & Monkseaton Reserves in a play-off for the title, but unfortunately, the decider went the way of the seasiders. Remarkably, West Allotment also finished in a play-off position in the following two seasons – and, in both cases, had to settle for that ill-fated runnerup spot.

The club earned instant promotion (after a play-off, such is club tradition) that year, and looked set to continue their roaring resurgence as the forties beckoned, but the onset of the Second World War put a stop to any further progress.

A succession of successes and the decade of decline After the war, Celtic enjoyed an unprecedented run of success from the mid-fifties onwards, winning the title for four consecutive seasons between 1956 and 1960, along with the NFA Amateur Cup and the NFA Minor Cup. Despite a promising start to the sixties, a player exodus away from the NAmL led to a period of decline, with closure becoming a serious possibility. The introduction of new blood rejuvenated the club on and off the pitch. Celtic moved to Backworth Welfare in 1968, consigning the ponds and mud of the Farm Ground to memory. A rejuvenated Allotment won the NFA Amateur Cup again in 1975, largely thanks to the goalscoring exploits of Benny Williams. He was ably supported by a talented and hungry squad, and, with strength in depth, Celtic were always considered title contenders.
In 1983, Allotment made its debut in both the Northern Alliance and the FA Vase. Silverware arrived just one season later, as Celtic dispatched Ponteland United in the Challenge Cup Final. This success was followed up two seasons later by the first of Celtic’s eight Alliance titles.
Having acted as tenants at Hillheads in Whitley Bay since 1995, the club moved to Whitley Park, which also serves as the headquarters of the Northumberland FA. The club earned promotion from Division Two as champions, losing just twice throughout the entire 2004/05 season. However, after six seasons of holding their own against the top tier’s member clubs, Celtic slipped back down a league in 2010/11.
However, the championship remained tantalisingly out of reach until yet another play-off tie in 1982. Allotment finally won the coveted title, defeating Annitsford Welfare by the odd goal in seven. When West Allotment retained the title with relative ease the following season, the decision was taken to move up a tier for the first time since 1938. In 1987, Allotment emerged victorious from two play-off games against Gosforth St. Nicholas, ushering in a wave of success not enjoyed at the club since the fifties. Terry Mitchell and Brian Latty built upon Ken Scott and Billy Hays’ good work, ultimately leading West Allotment into the Northern League.
The current crop have taken the club to the next level, first winning the Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup in 2013, and earning promotion the following year as worthy runners-up in Division Two. 2005

GK Age: 23 Apps: 13 Dan is a confident and wellrounded goalkeeper who signed in October 2014 from Division Two side Alnwick Town to challenge Beal for the number one jersey.

His consistency and unselfish graft might not catch the eye as frequently as the attackers, but ‘Belly’ has grown to become an integral part of the Allotment midfield, racking up over 100 appearances at the age of just 22. Aerially second to none, Michael is so often the winner of key battles in the middle of the park - but is just as good with the ball on the deck. Formerly of Shankhouse and Ryton, Bell can even operate as a target man up top, bringing the likes of Sean Reid into play. OR the third game running, West Allotment Celtic were left wondering how they failed to pick up well-deserved points, once more going down by the narrowest of margins to new table toppers Guisborough Town. Having experienced late heartbreak against Dunston UTS and Morpeth Town in their previous two encounters, Allotment hoped to take something from an in-form Guisborough outfit, unbeaten in fifteen games prior to their visit to Whitley Park. They made it sixteen on the bounce thanks to a fine individual effort from Curtis Round six minutes shy of half-time, though they had to withstand a fierce barrage from the hosts in the closing half hour of the contest. The Priorymen, just a point behind leaders West Auckland at the start of play, almost took the lead early doors, and though Nathan Mulligan’s bobbling attempt had beaten Daniel Mullen, centre-half Michael Hall pounded back to clear from the line.
WHITLEY PARK ATTENDANCE: 80 proving to be unstoppable. Despite the setback, Allotment almost responded immediately, a blue shirt getting up to clear Mark Fenwick’s header off the line, before Michael Bell’s follow-up was frantically blocked. Allotment steadily upped the ante after the break, Reid and John Pendlebury probing with shots from range. Chay Liddle was lucky not to see red for the visitors, the referee opting against a second yellow for a challenge from behind on Fenwick. The number nine’s involvement preceded further controversy minutes later, his sliding lay-off thumped towards goal by Reid, the shot possibly blocked by a defender’s arm rather than chest. Ian Dunn powered a free header wide of goal as Allotment continued to press for the leveller, but they were indebted to the impressive Daniel Mullen for keeping them in it. Sub Danny Earl looked destined to finish off a counter move from close range, but the former Alnwick stopper somehow kept it out using both hand and body.
Allotment sat deep and looked comfortable against the in-form Yorkshiremen, probing once or twice themselves, Sean Reid coming close to making telling contact on a Marc Dummett delivery towards the back post.
Pendlebury again went close, a deflection taking his shot inches wide, as Celtic kept Guisborough under the cosh. The hosts thought they had levelled when Tony Lancaster beat ‘keeper Liversedge to a looping corner, only for the officials to rule it out for a contentious push.
It would take something special to break the deadlock, and Town’s Curtis Round provided just that six minutes before half-time. Collecting possession twenty-five yards out, the young winger shaped to shoot, his swirling effort from range

UISBOROUGH Town reinforced their title credentials with a narrow - and arguably fortunate - victory over Allotment on Saturday, keeping the championship race wide open.

Shildon’s mouthwatering match-up against fellow favourites West Auckland was undoubtably Division One’s game of the day, and it did not disappoint the neutrals. West went ahead as early as the second minute through Craig Ruddy, and, though Paul Connor levelled before half-time, the visitors reclaimed the lead via Matty Moffatt poked finish. However, the Railwaymen rallied once more, Connor turning provider for Mark Doninger. Sam Hodgson was dismissed for a second yellow late on, but the home side held on to cling to a share of the spoils. Meanwhile, a shock was briefly on the cards for
Marske United at Crook Town, where the doomed hosts took an early lead, but the Seasiders hit back emphatically, scoring six without reply, including a Craig Gott hat-trick. A 4-1 win for Jarrow Roofing over Sunderland RCA saw the visitors consolidate seventh ahead of stuttering Durham City, who lost a seven-goal thriller at home to Whitley Bay, who staved off a late fightback to propel themselves away from the relegation mire. That said, the Citizens did make amends with a thumping 4-1 win over Marske on Tuesday. In mid-table, Morpeth Town, Consett and Benfield all picked up victories. Consett’s Michael Mackay grabbed a brace in their 6-2 rout of Ashington, whilst in the battle for twelfth, Benfield beat Bedlington by a single Paul Brayson strike. Morpeth recorded two wins in three days, earning victories over Penrith (3-1) and Sunderland RCA (0-2) respectively. Towards the bottom of the pile, Newton Aycliffe failed to pull away from the bottom three, Michael Sweet striking twice in a 2-1 away win for relegation candidates Synthonia. westallotmentcelticfc.com 11

NE unjust defeat is hard to take, two even moreso. But three in a row? That is little more than bad luck. Perhaps the devil lies in the detail, as suggested by Ian Dunn. “We won three on the spin, played well, then we’ve lost three on the spin but played equally well,” insists the captain. “We’re creating the chances, we just need to be more clinical. It’s fine margins.” As we enter March, those margins could not be any finer. Allotment are currently seven points clear of the drop - but two of the three teams below them have five and two games in hand respectively. Despite the unfortunate results, Dunn remains confident that Celtic will survive in the top flight -

provided they maintain their high levels of application. “We’ve just played Dunston who are pushing for the league, Guisborough who have just gone top, and in fairness, on reflection, we have played them off the park, so there’s nothing to be scared about. It’s just a case of putting in that effort every week and we’ll be alright.” As the wearer of the armband and a figure of respect in the dressing room, Dunny will be tasked with lifting the troops ahead of the relegation run-in - but the 31-year-old believes that morale remains high on the basis of the performances, if not the results. “It’s that type of group anyway, everyone gets on as mates,” he says. “Obviously it’s frustrating as hell, with mistakes that have cost us goals and things like that, but there’s not a game we go into thinking ‘we’re on a sticky wicket here’. We’re going in thinking we’re good enough to compete in every game.” Allotment certainly competed against the table toppers on Saturday, but left Whitley Park with nothing to show for it. “As a team we couldn’t have put any more in, it’s just about taking our time, taking our chances. We had enough chances, myself included. They’ve had one good strike, but it’s just a swing at goal. He’s just had a speculative effort.” That frustration was capped off with a disallowed goal against the hosts in the final five minutes. “I thought Tony made a fair jump,” says the holding midfielder. “I still think the keeper might have spilled it, he was all at sea. It was a poor decision; the referee just went for the easy option.”
The Guisborough Town tie was a close-run affair, as were games against Dunston, West Auckland and Morpeth Town. Those six and seven-goal drubbings are a distant memory. “We changed shape at the beginning of the season, starting with two good wins,” explains Dunny. “We were competitive in the games, even those which we lost heavily, but once teams figured out that we were playing narrow, they started playing diagonals, and we didn’t really deal with it or adjust to it. We were comfortable in the 4-5-1 formation that got us promoted and that’s what we’re back to, and we’ve picked up results.” The club stalwart will expect to take up his usual place in front of the defence this afternoon, against one of his first senior clubs. “Wilf Kielty was the manager and had all of his old guard in. I was 19 years old, in and out. Being that age and wanting to play all of the time, I didn’t really settle for long, so I moved on. Maybe I should’ve stuck it out, as they got promoted from the Wearside that year and I’d left in a huff!” Regardless, Dunny forged a semi-professional career for himself in the following years, his tough tackling, tireless running and never-say-die attitude evoking images of yesteryear, blue collar workers getting stuck in at the Farm Ground. However, the club legends would spin in their graves if they could see what adorned his feet last Saturday. Yellow and lime Nike boots, more befitting of the (ironic?) nickname ‘Dunninhio’ than of a no-nonsense ball-winner. Of course, he has his explanations.
“Dunninhio used to be my Wii character’s name, so it just followed on!” he laughs. “I’m normally black boots, no gloves, hard worker. To be honest, I bought the yellow boots for five-a-side with no intention of wearing them at eleven-a-side, just because they were cheap. But I lost a stud and didn’t have a spare, so the yellow ones came on at half-time. But the black boots will be back for Shields!” Dunny can expect to showcase his silky samba skills - diligent work rate, tight marking, welltimed tackles, everything those Brazilians are renowned for - in front of a bumper crowd, the Allotment - Shields derby always drawing a sizeable audience. “I’m from North Shields, so I know a lot of the fans and some of the players. They’re better games in front of a crowd. During the game, it keeps your levels up when you’re getting cheered on and you want to put one over on them when there’s more of them watching!” Fresh from another Vase victory, Shields will be brimming with confidence, and the club mainstay - now moving towards his 300-game milestone - is under no illusions as to the magnitude of the task ahead. “I think North Shields have a good, strong squad; they could change three or four players still play well. They’ve obviously brought in a few players in the summer. If we turn up today and get a positive result, then we’ll be doing well.” A point would be better than most have managed this season, but if lady luck belatedly cracks that seldom seen smile of hers, we might just claim all three.

ORTH Shields emerged victorious in West Allotment Celtic’s first Tyneside derby of the 2014/15 campaign, running out 3-0 winners in front of a bumper crowd at the Daren Persson Stadium. There was plenty of intensity about the game from the first whistle, and, though chances were few and far between, full-blooded tackles and the high tempo made for an engaging spectacle. Gareth Bainbridge spurned Shields’ only half-chance of the opening thirty minutes, skewing a John Grey delivery wide of the post. It would be his only contribution to the match, forced off early through injury, and influential centre-half Kevin Hughes would soon join him on the bench. James Luccock and Denver Morris were looking dangerous for Shields, but counterpart David Dormand almost opened the scoring at the other end, firing over after great work from Kallum McGlen. Player-manager Stoneman almost went one better from the winger’s corner, a goalbound header blocked on the line by a Robins defender, and the hosts somehow managed to keep the ball out in the ensuing scramble. Mark Fenwick saw a shot blocked at close quarters by ex-Allotment stopper Bannon, and it was another former charge who would have a devastating impact at the other end of the field. Holmes collected a wayward cross-field pass from Hall and danced past three challenges en route to goal, rounding Beal and squaring for substitute Peter Glen-Ravenhill to tap in from close range. 14 westallotmentcelticfc.com
Morris and Glen-Ravenhill both shot wide either side of half-time, and, though Allotment created fewer chances, they did put the ball in the back of the net just before the hour – only for the referee to intervene. Dormand’s looping delivery from the right was met by the head of Reid, ghosting in between two defenders to nod past Bannon. However, the man in the middle instantly blew up for what seemed to be a non-existent push. There was no doubt over the second goal, scored by Robins livewire Luccock. Dean Holmes’ initial shot from the edge of the area thundered off the crossbar, his right-sided counterpart was there to follow in from close range. Graham Fenton’s men should have wrapped it up through Glen-Ravenhill, only for the forward to be denied in a one-on-one duel with Ryan Beal. Nevertheless, the hosts did complete the victory through another sub. Curtis Coppen was introduced as Hughes’ replacement, and he powered in to meet Luccock’s delivery towards the back post – though the back four believed that he had pushed his marker prior to heading home. Coppen had another attempt blocked before Holmes lifted over as the game wound down, with Dormand and Lee having little success at the other end. Although Allotment kept their high-flying rivals at bay for much of the first half, Shields were clear and deserved winners over the ninety minutes, having more firepower than Celtic on the day - and helped, no doubt, by two game-changing decisions in their favour.

Player-manager Paul Stoneman has been a noticeable absentee in recent weeks, the veteran defender sidelined with a knee injury since the Whitley Bay match on Boxing Day. Stona returned alongside Michael Hall at centre-half last Saturday, performing well in the 1-0 defeat against Guisborough Town. It is likely that he will select himself for what is expected to be another tough game, his experience and tough tackling helping to nullify the Shields attack. John Pendlebury is expected to return again to his role at right-back.
25-year-old Dean Holmes is one of Shields’ most dangerous attacking outlets. The Robins winger was actually part of West Allotment’s squad when they first went down in 2011, and has gone on to become a hero down the Coast Road. Quick-footed and a keen runner, Dean has scored a goal every two games in his 120-start Shields career, including the final goals in both of the club’s previous Vase games. The attacker, who also had a brief stint at Blyth Spartans in 2013, returns to his old stamping ground this afternoon and could show Celtic just what they are missing.

ORTH Shields Athletic was originally formed in 1896, and played initially in the South Shields & District league. They progressed through the Northern Combination, Northern Alliance and North Eastern League and became a major force in North East Football, outside the Football League, moving to play at Hawkeys Lane around 1900. At least two players, Alan Grenyer and Harry Chambers went on to play for the full England team after starting their careers with North Shields Athletic. Preston Colliery F.C. emerged after the Great War becoming North Shields A.F.C. in 1928, and the club won many honours over the years. They enjoyed tremendous local support with a record 12,800 watching the local derby with South Shields in 1936. Shields won the North Eastern League title and numerous cups but their moment of crowning glory came in 1969. After joining the Northern league they won the F.A. Amateur cup by beating Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium. Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won with 18 westallotmentcelticfc.com

second half strikes from Richie Hall and Brian Joicey – both laid on by Orrick, a shipyard worker from Byker. The Club, which also won the Northern League Championship and Challenge Cup that same year, were declared joint holders of the European Amateur Cup the following season when the two teams against Italian side Almas resulted in a level aggregate score. In 1982 the Robins won 1-0 at Halifax Town in the F.A. Cup 1st Round, Bede McCaffrey scoring the all important goal that year. Walsall were the visitors to Appleby Park in the next round and left with a 3-0 victory. Having moved into the national pyramid by joining the Northern Counties East League, North Shields earned promotion to the Nothern Premier League by winning the title, but financial problems resulted in the club losing the Appleby Park ground, and the costs of a groundshare with Whitley Bay ultimately proved prohibitive. With no home to call their own, and mounting debts piling up, North Shields went bankrupt. However, they almost instantly reformed as a new club,
thanks to the efforts of local businessmen and band members - Alan Hull and Ray Laidlaw joined the board, as did two North Tyneside councillors. The club, headed by new chairman Richard Slade, sought immediate admission to the Second Division of the VAUX Wearside League. Since then, North Shields have enjoyed considerable success, winning the treble of League, Shipowners Cup and Northumberland Senior Bowl in 1998/99. In 2000/01 they finished runners-up to Nissan but won the Monkwearmouth Cup and the Senior Bowl for the second time. They won the Wearside league by eight points in 2002 and the Monkwearmouth Cup again in 2003. The Robins finally gained promotion back into the Northern League in 2004 - after a 15 year absence - following their third Wearside League title and a further Shipowners Cup triumph. After 10 years in the second division, the club returned to the top tier, having had a record breaking 2013/14, claiming the trophy with a 100 points total under the guidance of manager Graham Fenton.

4TH MARCH 2015 DAREN PERSSON STADIUM NORTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE North Shields significantly closed the gap on both Guisborough Town and West Auckland on Wednesday evening, now within three points of the summit with games in hand after a 3-1 victory at home to Bishop Auckland. Andy Johnson thought he had opened the scoring for the Two Blues, only to see the linesman’s flag raised for offside. Instead, it was Shields counterpart Gareth Bainbridge who struck first on 17 minutes, racing through on goal to slide the ball past Bish ‘keeper Steven Richardson. Johnson did make his mark as the half hour approached, nodding home unmarked from a corner, but joy soon turned to frustration for Bayles and Riley in the away dugout, centre-forward Johnny Butler’s headbutt earning him an early shower. Bishops battled hard thereafter to preserve what would have been an impressive point at the Daren Persson, but Shields finally took the lead with six minutes remaining, James Luccock capping off a swift counter, before Bainbridge made the result safe with a trademark finish. 20 westallotmentcelticfc.com
The Robins have picked up where they left off last season, their swashbuckling style of play just as effective in the top flight as it was in the Second Division. Their appearance in the Vase semi is no surprise to supporters who have seen their side taken apart by the Robins, opposition fans regularly citing Shields as the best footballing team in the league entire. Clubs south of the Humber would be forgiven for their ignorance of Tyneside’s most progressive outfit; prior to this season, the reds had not made it past the First Round, or much further down the road than Hull. The journey started in muted, almost inconspicuous fashion against Northallerton Town. Dan Smart, a 27-goal striker in 2013/14, made his last telling contribution in a Shields shirt with the only goal of the game. The more prominent of Fenton’s forwards - the one and only Gaz Bainbridge - duly took centre stage thereafter, a four-goal haul seeing off Stokesley in the Second Qualifying Round. However, the plucky hosts gave Shields an almighty scare at 3-0, drawing to within one goal of parity before a cool Bainbridge finish settled the tie - and fluttering hearts - once and for all.

The NCEL’s Emley were the plucky opposition, but were no match for Bainbridge and co. in the end, going down 4-2 but not without a fight. They certainly proved a sterner test than Sunderland RCA in the next round, another impressive Bainbridge haul - a hat-trick this time - earning Shields another tie closer to home. Seaham Red Star were familiar but unwelcome adversaries - Colly’s side were the only ones to do the double over Shields in their championship season. Three in a row seemed fanciful, even at Seaham Town Park, and so it proved. Again, the Robins raced into a threegoal lead; again, the opposition hauled two back; only this time, goalgetter Gaz - on a hat-trick again - did not get the decisive fourth. Instead, it was Ben Richardson who completed a rare brace with a thumping free kick at the death. The Robins were flying
into the Fourth Round, but not without a little turbulence. The draw pitted Tyneside’s finest against the Steelmen of Consett, but the Durham side did not have the mettle to cope with their hosts. The town turned out in force to see its team progress, Denver Morris particularly catching the eye in a resounding 4-1 victory, though credit was also due to unsung centre-halves Hughes and Parker. 624 represented a season’s best home crowd - for all of three weeks. North Shields smashed the one thousand barrier for the second time in as many seasons when Phoenix Sports came to town, the in-form Cockneys considerably outnumbered and ultimately outgunned. The flags were waving and the hard core bellowing on the Curva Nord as the home side, largely backed by a partisan 1,092 crowd, romped to a 4-1 victory, the Holmes and Bainbridge partnership particularly resplendent.
Sixteen became eight, Dunston UTS’ replay defeat leaving Shields as the League - and the conurbation’s - sole representative. An away draw to Erith & Belvedere necessitated a lengthy coach trip to the Big Smoke for players and fans alike, an overnight stay and extra prep thrown into the bargain. Shields, true to form, took it all in stride. Dean Holmes struck first on 50 minutes, Adam Forster last on 60. Two-nil was enough to send the Ultras on tour into raptures at the final whistle. Highworth Town or Tadcaster Albion await. Tough opposition, but any tougher than Phoenix, who had conceded just eight goals all season prior to their trip to Meadow Well? Or the Deres, currently second in the Southern Counties East Prem? Unlikely. The title remains a target for North Shields, but cup glory is just 180 minutes away. A reliable shot stopper & personal trainer that has made well over 100 appearances for the club, scoring 3 goals in open play. Represented Tow Law Town, Bedlington Terriers and Newcastle Blue Star.
Joe Elliott
Signed from Cullercoats, Joe has proven to be very versatile, playing in midfield or at right back. Had a good season last and topped the appearance chart. He has accrued the most games of all those in the current Robins squad.
John Grey
John is in his second spell at the club, having been at Newcastle Benfield for a period. Pacey attacking left back who loves to get forward. Likes to stand out from the crowd with his fashion “tastes�.
Jack Donnison
Jack is a young, solid full back whose energy and love of a tackle has made him a favourite at Shields. He has become a consistent performer in defence but also moving forward.
Marc Lancaster
Signed from Morpeth Town, Marc is a solid defender and a handy addition when pushing forward. What he lacks in height he makes up for in pace.

Gareth Bainbridge is, in two words, a goal machine. Arriving from Ashington in 2013. Gaz proved that his injury woes were well behind him, smashing in 47 league goals en route to promotion with Shields, collecting the personal honour of NL Player of the Year at the end of 2013/14 - a remarkable feat for one plying his trade in Division Two. This year, he has another fifteen for the Robins, his goalscoring only hampered by a spell on the sidelines at Christmas. Capable of scoring all manner of goals, the 29-year-old is one of the deadliest strikers in the Northern League on his day.

Michael is a quick, attacking midfielder who returned after a six-month stint at Seaham Red Star. Adds goals to our midfield, and is popular with the supporters at the Daren Persson Stadium.

An attacking midfield competitor, Ben is a fans’ favourite with his ability to win the ball and move play forward. Signed from Washington, but also played with distinction for Allotment.

A midfielder with amazing vision and attitude, Kieran is a former Newcastle United player who poses a real threat from midfield. Despite his young age, the 24-year-old has turned out for a slew of Northern League clubs.

Dean Walker
A quick, direct attacking player whose skill and eye for goal would cause problems at any level. Was a handful at Washington prior to making the move across the Tyne. The 24-year-old is most dangerous in full flight on the flanks.
Dean Holmes
Dean was the top scorer in the Northern Alliance back in 2010-11. Signed from Heaton Stannington and immediately scored on his Shields debut. Much coveted, Dean briefly signed for Blyth Spartans but soon returned to the Robins after finding game time limited at Croft Park.
Signed from Newton Aycliffe, Denver is a much-admired, quick attacking midfielder with an eye for a good pass. Scorer of some cracking goals and already a fast favorite. Robert is a left wing player taken from Monkseaton Academy. He is something of an unknown quantity, but will be eager to impress in the coming months.

A nippy attacker who progressed through the ranks at AFC Farsley, turning out for Garforth Town after he was released by the Villagers. Now back in his home city.

A talented player who was on the books of Newcastle and Sunderland as a youngster and has also represented England at youth level. The ex-Team North forward is looking to prove his worth on North Tyneside.

Again playing it fast and loose, but first team coach Hoggy is still registered as a player. He is well-known to visiting fans as a committed centre-half who amassed hundreds of appearances in the red shirt.

He only made a handful of appearances as a youngster in the Wearside before moving on, but one decade later, Dunny has turned out over 250 times in the green and white hoops. The 31-year-old is our club captain and the beating heart of the side. A committed leader.
David Henderson

Another regular favourite of Hoggy’s after playing alongside him at Springbank, Hendy has been with the coach at both Shields and Annfield Plain. The 31-year-old’s link-up with Sean Reid was one of the driving forces behind Allotment’s promotion last year.
Ben Richardson
Centre-mid Ben was, like Dunn, a member of Allotment’s Division One side the first time around. Now a key cog in the middle for Shields, ever-present Ben is back in the big time with the Robins.
Dean Holmes
At 22, Dean was a brief latecomer to Allotment’s relegation party. Three years on, he has blossomed into one of Tyneside’s most prominent attackers under Graham Fenton.
Kieran Wrightson
Allotment was one of the many waypoints for Kieran after his release by Newcastle United, but he has found a home at Shields, scoring 11 times in 81 starts.
Gary Day
Big things were destined for Celtic’s top scorer in 2011/12, but a succession of bad injuries has kept him from reaching his potential. Robins fans will be hoping he can get fit and fulfil it with the title chasers.
