WROXHAM AND HOVETON LIONS CLUB

By the time you read this we will have just held our Charter Lunch, celebrating 46 years of Service to our community. This is an annual event were our members, supporters and other Lions from around our area and further afield, come together to socialise and recognise the importance of the small part we play in helping those less fortunate. As well as supporting many local individuals, causes and charities we also, as reported in my April article, contribute to the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF). Our many donations over the years have been recognised by LCIF and we have been awarded Model Club status. One of only six clubs within our district. This would not have been possible without the continued support of you, the general public, whose monetary donations through our fundraising and donations of items to sell in our shop have enabled this to happen. I would like to offer our grateful thanks and hope that you can, under these very difficult times, continue to do so. May 22nd saw our second Craft Fair take place. We hope you enjoyed the variety of different items on sale and stopped for a short while to enjoy some refreshments and a snack. We will be attending the Wroxham Parish Councils Platinum Jubilee Celebration on Thursday June 2nd at Wroxham Football Club with our mobile tombola. Don't forget our that after an enforced two year break, our Hoveton Charity Village Fete takes place on Sunday 7th August, 10am to 4pm. Admission is 2.50 for adults with children under 16 free. There will be lots to see and do, including craft, trade and charity stalls, classic cars, live music, childrens ride, boucy castle , climbing wall, food and refreshments, bar and more Are you moving house and in preparation have some unwanted items or are you just having a good declutter. If so we’ll be happy to take any undamaged Bric a Brac, toys, books or clean clothing during shop opening times, preferably in the morning before the shop opens between 9 and 10am. For those unable to take items to the shop we can collect. Please ring the shop on 01603 783737 to arrange collection. Please do not leave anything outside the shop as it’s considered to be Fly-tipping and as such is unlawful. Did you volunteer in some capacity during the Pandemic? Cats:

Did you know that white haired and thin haired cats are prone to sun burn? The ear pinnae (ear flaps) are the usual site affected, and this can contribute to development of cancer later in life. The best way to manage this is to apply a light layer of animal friendly sunblock to the ears on sunny days.

Rabbits:

Like dogs and cats, these furry friends often enjoy a spot of sunbathing but aren’t immune to the potential side effects. Make sure water is always topped up and easily accessible and ensure areas of shade are always available. Be Flystrike aware - this is a tragic disease and can easily catch you out. The condition most commonly affects rabbits but can potentially happen in any species Flystrike involves flies laying eggs on/ around the animal, which hatch out as maggots and begin eating on the animal’s flesh. This occurs in warm weather, where there is soiled bedding or where the animal is vulnerable such as the elderly, overweight or debilitated. Avoidance involves making sure the environment is generally clean, treating wounds immediately and ensuring animals are not soiled with urine or faeces. For rabbits be sure to check their bottoms daily and consider applying preventative spot-on treatments. Should you suspect your animal of having this condition, seek veterinary advice immediately.
