Adobe Photoshop is a graphics editing program developed and published by Adobe Systems Incorporated.

A

dobe’s 2003 “Creative Suite” rebranding led to Adobe Photoshop 8 being renamed to Adobe Photoshop Creative suite. Thus, Adobe Photoshop Creative suite 5 is the 12th major release of Adobe Photoshop. The Creative suite rebranding also resulted in Adobe offering numerous software packages containing multiple Adobe programs for a reduced price. Adobe Photoshop is released in two editions: Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Photoshop Extended, with the Extended having extra three dimensional image creation, motion graphics editing, and advanced image analysis features. Adobe Photoshop Extended is included in all of Adobe’s Creative Suite offerings except Design Standard, which includes the Adobe Photoshop edition. Alongside Photoshop and Photoshop Extended, Adobe also publishes Photoshop Elements and Photoshop Light Room, collectively called “ the Adobe Photoshop Family”. In 2008, Adobe released Adobe Photoshop Express, a free web-based image editing tool to edit photos directly on blogs and social networking sites; in 2011 a version was released for the Android operating system and the I. O. S. operating system. Adobe only supports Windows and Macintosh versions of Photoshop, but using Wine, Photoshop Creative suite 5 can run well on L. I. N. U. X..

“I had never used any Adobe Programs before this class, but as an aspiring Graphic Designer it was about time I learned.”

manufacturer Barney scan to distribute copies of the program with a slide scanner; a “total of about 200 copies of Photoshop were shipped” this way.

In 1987, Thomas Knoll, a PhD student at the University of Michigan began writing a program on his Macintosh Plus to display grayscale images on a monochrome During this time, John traveled to Silicon Valley and gave a display. This program, called Display, caught the attention of his demonstration of the program to engineers at Apple and Russell brother John Knoll, an Industrial Brown, art director at Adobe. Photoshop files sometimes have the file extension .P. S. D., Which stands for “Photoshop Document.” A “P. S. D.” file stores an image with support for most imaging options available in Photoshop. These include layers with masks, color spaces, C. M. Y. K. Mode (used for commercial printing), transparency, text, alpha channels and spot colors, clipping paths, and duotone settings. This is in contrast to many other file formats that restrict content to provide streamlined, predictable functionality. A P. S. D. file has a maximum height and width of 30,000 pixels. Photoshop files sometimes have the file extension .P. S. B., which stands for “Photoshop Big” (also known as “large document format”). A “P. S. B.” file extends the P. S. D. File format, increasing the maximum height and width to 300,000 pixels. That limit was apparently chosen somewhat arbitrarily by Adobe, not based on computer arithmetic constraints (it is not close to a power of two, as is 30,000) but for ease of software testing “.P. S. D.” and P. S. B. formats are documented. Because of Photoshop’s popularity, “P. S. D.” Files are widely used and supported to some extent by most competing software. The “.P. S. D.” File format can be exported to and from Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premiere Pro, and After Effects, to make professional standard D. V. D. ‘S and provide non-linear editing and special effects services, such as backgrounds, textures, and so on, for television, film, and the web. Photoshop’s primary strength is as a pixel-based image editor, unlike vector-based image editors. However, Photoshop also enables the creation, incorporation, and

manipulation of vector graphics through its Paths, Pen tools, Shape tools, Shape Layers, Type tools, Import command, and Smart object functions. These tools and commands are convenient when you want to combine pixel-based and vector-based images in one Photoshop document, because you may not have to use more than one program. However, if you want to create very complex vector graphics with numerous shapes and colors, you may find it easier to use software that was created primarily for that purpose, such as Adobe Illustrator. If you want to import the complex vector object into Photoshop, you can import it as a Smart Object. Double-click on Photoshop’s layers palette to open the object in its original software, such as Adobe Illustrator. You can make changes. When you save, Photoshop will update the Smart Object.

RAW files which allow users to process images with higher speed and conversion quality. Creative suite 3 supports over 150 RAW formats as well as JPEG, and PDF. Enhancements were made to the Black and White Conversion, Brightness and Contrast Adjustment and Vanishing Point Module tools. The Black and White adjustment option improves control over manual grayscale conversions with a dialog box similar to that of Channel Mixer. There is more control over print options and better management with Adobe Bridge. The Clone Source palette is introduced, adding more options to the clone stamp tool. Other features include the nondestructive Smart Filters, optimizing graphics for mobile devices, Fill Light and Dust Busting tools. Composing is assisted with Photoshop’s new Quick Selection and Refine Edge tools and improved image stitching technology.

Smart Objects display filters without altering the original image (here on Mac OS X) Creative suite 3 improves on features from previous versions of Photoshop Creative suite and introduces new tools. One of the most significant is the streamline interface which allows increased performance, speed, and efficiency. There is also improved support for Camera

tools with DICOM file support. The three dimensional graphic formats allow three dimensional content to be incorporated into two dimensional compositions. As for video editing, Creative suite 3 supports layers and video formatting so users can edit video files per frame. Creative suite 3 and Creative suite 3 Extended were released in April of 2007 to the United States and Canada. They were also made available through Adobe’s online store and Adobe Authorized Resellers. Both Creative suite 3 and Creative suite 3 Extended are offered as their stand-alone application or feature of Adobe Creative Suite 3. The price for Creative suite 3 is U. S. $649 and the extended version is U. S. $999. Both products are compatible with Intel-based Macintosh and Power P. C. S, supporting Windows X. P. and Windows Vista.

Creative suite 4 Creative suite 4 features smoother panning and zooming, allowing faster image editing at a high magnification. The interface is more simplified with its tab-based interface making it cleaner to work with. Photoshop Creative suite 4 features a new three dimensional engine allowing the conversion of gradient maps to three dimensional objects, adding depth to layers and text, and getting print-quality

output with the new ray-tracing rendering engine. It supports common three dimensional formats; the new Adjustment and Mask Panels; Content-aware scaling (seam carving); Fluid Canvas Rotation and File display options. The Content-aware scaling allows users to intelligently size and scale images, and the Canvas Rotation tool makes it easier to rotate and edit images from any angle. Adobe released Photoshop Creative suite 4 Extended, which has the features of Adobe Photoshop Creative suite 4, plus capabilities for scientific imaging, three dimensional, motion graphics, accurate image analysis and high-end film and video users. The faster three dimensional engine allows users to paint directly on three dimensional models, wrap two dimensional images around three dimensional shapes and animate three dimensional objects. As the successor to Photoshop Creative suite 3, Photoshop Creative suite 4 is the first X 64 edition of Photoshop on consumer computers for Windows. The color correction tool has also been improved significantly. Creative suite 4 and Creative suite 4 Extended were released on October 15, 2008. They were also made available through Adobe’s online store and Adobe Authorized Resellers. Both Creative suite 4 and Creative suite 4 Extended are offered as their stand-alone application or feature of Adobe Creative Suite 4. The price for

Creative suite 4 is US $699 and the extended version is U. S. $999. Both products are compatible with Intel-based Macintosh O. S. X. and Power P. C. S., supporting Windows X. P. and Windows VISTA. Creative suite 5 In May 2011, Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 (Creative suite 5.5) was released, with new versions of some of the applications. Its version of Photoshop, 12.1, is identical to the concurrently released update for Photoshop Creative suite 5, version 12.0.4, except for support for the new subscription pricing that was introduced with Creative suite 5.5. Creative suite 5 introduces new tools such as the Content-Aware Fill, Refine Edge, Mixer Brush, Bristle Tips and Puppet Warp.

The community also had a hand in the additions made to Creative suite 5 as 30 new features and improvements were included by request. These include automatic image straightening, the Rule-ofThirds cropping tool, color pickup and saving an 16 bit image as a J. P. E. G. another feature includes the Adobe Mini Bridge which

allows for efficient file browsing and management. Creative suite 5 Extended includes everything in Creative suite 5 plus features in three dimensional and video editing. A new materials library was added, providing more options such as Chrome, Glass, and Cork. The new Shadow Catcher tool can be used to further enhance three dimensional objects. For motion graphics, the tools can be applied to over more than one frame in a video sequence. Creative suite 5 and Creative suite 5 Extended were made available through Adobe’s online store, Adobe Authorized Resellers and Adobe direct sales. Both Creative suite 5 and Creative suite 5 Extended are offered as their standalone application or feature of Adobe Creative Suite 5. The price for Creative suite 5 is U. S. $699 and the extended version is U. S. $999. Both products are compatible with Intel-based Macintosh OS and Windows XP, Windows VISTA, and Windows 7. Creative suite 6 On March 21, 2012, Adobe released a beta version of Photoshop Creative suite 6. It adds new creative design tools and a redesigned interface with a focus on enhanced performance . Creative suite 6 Beta is available for free downloading in English and Japanese for Mac OS and Windows. New features have been added to the ContentAware tool such as the Content-Aware Patch and Content-Aware Move . Adobe Photoshop Creative suite 6 will also bring a suite of tools for

video editing. Color and exposure adjustments, as well as layers are among a few things that will be featured in this new editor. Upon completion of editing, the user will be presented with a handful of options of exporting into a few popular formats. Creative suite 6 brings the “straighten” tool to Photoshop, where a user simply draws a line anywhere on an image, and the canvas will reorient itself so that the line drawn becomes horizontal, and adjusts the media accordingly. This was created with the intention that users will draw a line parallel to a plane in the image, and reorient the image to that plane to easier achieve certain perspectives.

be applied to the current layer, as opposed all layers in older version of Adobe Photoshop. Adobe has responded to feedback from the graphic design community, and has modified the User Interface accordingly. Now, it boasts a more unified, static look, and is easier to keep track of all the palettes and documents. Tools

Creative suite 6 will allow background saving, which means that while another document is compiling and archiving itself, it will be possible to simultaneously edit an image. Also, Creative suite 6 will also feature a custom autosave feature, preventing any work from being lost.

Upon loading Photoshop, a sidebar with a variety of tools with multiple image-editing functions appears to the left of the screen. These tools typically fall under the categories of cropping and slicing; drawing; painting; measuring and navigation; selection; typing; and retouching. Some tools contain a small triangle in the bottom right of the toolbox icon. These can be expanded to reveal similar tools. While newer versions of Photoshop are updated to include new tools and features, several recurring tools that exist in most versions are discussed below.

All the tools and filters will

be improved and optimized in Creative suite 6. Now, when a filter is applied, it will

The “slice” and slice select tools, like the crop tool, are used in isolating parts of images. The slice tool can be used to divide an image into different sections, and these separate parts can be used as pieces of a web page design once HTML is applied. The slice select tool allows sliced sections of an image to be adjusted and shifted.

Photoshop includes a few versions of the pen tool. The pen tool creates precise paths that can be manipulated using anchor points. The free form pen tool allows the user to draw paths freehand, and with the magnetic pen tool, the drawn path attaches closely to outlines of objects in an image, which is useful for isolating them from a background. Cultural impact Photoshop and derivatives such as Photoshopped (or just Shopped) have become verbs that are sometimes used to refer to images edited by Photoshop, or any image manipulating program. “Photoshop is also used as a noun to refer to image editing programs in general. Such derivatives are discouraged by Adobe because, in order to maintain validity and protect the trademark from becoming generic, trademarks Painting A few of the painting tools in Photoshop are the brush, pencil, gradient and paint bucket tools. These can be used to retouch images by altering and adding colored pixels. Original paintings can be created using the brush tool, since it has many different default brush-tips, and brush strokes be easily adjusted in size, shape and texture. There is an option to create custom brushes to suit the user’s needs, and original brushes and brush packages can be found on the web. The

pencil tool allows the user to paint rough strokes on the canvas, creating a similar effect to a real pencil on paper. The gradient, fill and paint bucket tools are similar to each other, as they each fill areas of the canvas with color. Measuring and Navigation The eyedropper tool selects a color from an area of the image that is clicked, and samples it for future use. The hand tool navigates an image by moving it in any direction, and the zoom tool enlarges the part of an image that is clicked on, allowing for a closer view. Selection The marquee tool can make selections that are single row, single column, rectangular and elliptical. Once an area of an image is highlighted, the move tool can be used to manually relocate the selected piece to anywhere on the canvas. The lasso tool is similar to the marquee tool, however, the user can make a custom selection by drawing it freehand. In addition, the lasso tool can make magnetic and polygonal selections. Typing Photoshop also provides tools for adding and editing text. The type tools create an area where text can be entered, and the type mask tools create a selection area that has the shape of text. The type tool creates vector-based text, so symbols, letters and numbers in various fonts and colors can be re-sized while maintaining the same resolution. Content-Aware

Content-awareness is a useful aspect of Photoshop where image editing is done automatically and intelligently. It comes in two forms which are content-aware scaling and content-aware filling, in which elements in a background automatically recompose according to the areas a user of the program decides to fill or scale. More specifically, content-aware scaling works by re scaling an image and causing its content to adapt to the new dimensions and preserving important areas of it. Content-aware filling functions by matching tone, color, and noise of an area of the image that contained an object or detail in which the user decides to remove.

dragged across part of an image, stretches and smudges pixels as if they are real paint, and the blur tool softens portions of an image by lowering the amount of detail within the adjusted area. The eraser tool removes pixels from an image, and the magic eraser tool selects areas of solid color and erases them. The burn and dodge tools, which are derived from traditional methods of adjusting the exposure on printed photos, have opposite effects; the burn tool

Healing Tools With improvement retouching tools like the Clone Stamp tool and Healing Brush tool, imperfections of an image can easily be removed. These tools essentially function by locating a source point (or multiple source points) that can be scaled or rotated in order to cover an imperfection or unwanted detail in a specific area of an image. Retouching There are several tools that are used for retouching, manipulating and adjusting photos, such as the clone stamp, eraser, burn, dodge, smudge and blur tools. The clone stamp tool samples a selected portion of an image, and duplicates it over another area using a brush that can be adjusted in size, flow and opacity. The smudge tool, when

Photoshop’s intelligence by allowing a user to reposition an object in an image such as a flower or arm. This is done by using points that outline the structure of an object and easily repositioning in the wanted orientation.

Three dimensional With the Extended version of Photoshop Creative suite 5, two dimensional elements of an artwork can easily become threedimensional with the click of a button. Extrusions of texts, an available library of materials for three-dimensional, and even wrapping two-dimensional images around three dimensional geometry are all possible with this version of Photoshop. Realism can also be added to an image using the three dimensional features of Photoshop such as animating image-based lights and depth of field.

darkens selected areas, and the dodge tool lightens them. Puppet Wrap Similar to the content-aware tool, the puppet wrap tool reveals

Mobile Integration

Third-party plugins have also been added to the most recent version of Photoshop where technologies such as the Apple IPAD have integrated the software with different types of applications. Painting applications allow users to easily create paintings with their fingertips and use an array of different paint

from dry to wet in order to create rich color blending. Camera Raw With the Camera Raw plug-in, RAW images can be processed without the use of Adobe Light Room, along with other image file formats such as JPEGs, or PNGs. The plug-in allows users to remove noise without the side-effect of over-sharpening, add grain, and even perform post-crop vignetting. Graphic Design Photoshop has been an useful tool for graphic designers to create artwork conveniently and aesthetically. For example, a studio based in Barcelona use Photoshop in order to visualize their vision on an initial concept and then move onto different media to complete the concept. The studio takes traditional art and pushes the limits on the medium in order to create artwork for print and web. Some of the many other graphic design studios that use Photoshop are Z. Design and American Greetings. Magazines Before any type of print media is published, whether it is a magazine, newspaper, or even novel it is most likely the case Photoshop has been used to enhance and clean up the imagery and text on many if not all of the pages. Magazines like Fitness Magazine and Clear Magazine both use Photoshop and many of its tools in order to conveniently enhance the imagery in their magazines. Fitness Magazine employs many in-house designers in order to retouch the photos of models to enhance their beauty and add finishing touches to the imagery by using tools

that balance color and add drop shadows among other edits. Photoshop Disasters Among the mass communication in printed and digital media, a popular website by the name of “Photoshop Disasters was created in order to expose the mishaps (and even the best) of Photoshop designers and artists in these

mediums. This is done by readers of the website who send emails to the administrator of the site who find these disasters. Many of the disasters range from missing limbs to incorrect composition to overdone photo retouching on fashion models among the many others presented on the website. Video Editing

ILLUSTRATOR The Wonderful World of Vector Art. Adobe Illustrator is a vector graphics editor developed and marketed by Adobe Systems. Illustrator is similar in scope, intended market, and functionality to its competitors, Designer Pro and Macromedia FreeHand. The latest version, Illustrator Creative Suite 5, is the fifteenth generation in the product line. History

A

dobe Illustrator was first developed for the Apple Macintosh in December 1986 (shipping in January 1987) as a commercialization of Adobe’s in-house font development software and PostScript file format. Adobe Illustrator is the companion product of Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop is primarily geared toward digital photo manipulation and photorealistic styles of computer illustration, while Illustrator provides results in the typesetting and logo graphic areas of design. Early magazine advertisements (featured in graphic design trade magazines such as Communication Arts) referred to the product as “the Illustrator Adobe”. Illustrator 88, the product name for version 1.7, was released in 1988 and introduced many new

tools and features. As of 2011, the Adobe Illustrator ‘88 file format is used in the M. A. T. L. A. B. Programming Language as an option to save figures. Although during its first decade Adobe developed Illustrator primarily for Macintosh, it sporadically supported other platforms. In the early nineties, Adobe released versions of Illustrator for Next, Silicon Graphics, and Sun platforms, but they were discontinued due to poor market accceptance. The first version of Illustrator for Windows, version 2.0, was releeased in early 1989 and flopped. The next Windows version, 4.0, was widely criticized as being too similar to Illustrator 1.1 instead of the Macintosh 3.0 version, and certainly not the equal of Windows’ most popular illustration package. (Note that there were no versions 2.0 or 4.0 for the Macintosh although the second release for the Mac was titled Illustrator 88 - the year of its release.) Version 4 was, however, the first version of Illustrator to support editing in preview mode, which did not appear in a Macintosh version until 5.0 in 1993. Adobe Illustrator 10, The

last version before the Creative Suite Re brand With the introduction of Illustrator 6 in 1996, Adobe made critical changes in the user interface with regards to path editing (and also to converge on the same user interface as Adobe Photoshop), and many users opted not to upgrade. Illustrator also begaan to support True Type, effectively ending the “font wars” between PostScript Type 1 and True Type. Like Photoshop, Illustrator also began supporting plug-ins, greatly and quickly extending its abilities. Adobe bought A. L. D. U. S., in 1994, for PageMaker. As part of the transaction, the Federal Trade Commission issued a complaint of Adobe Systems on October 18, 1994 ordering a divestiture of FreeHand to “remedy the lessening of competition resulting from thee acquisition” because of Adobe’s Illustrator software. As a result, Macromedia acquired FreeHand in 1995 from its original developer, and continued its development through 2004. The difference in strengths between Photoshop and Illustrator became clear with the rise of the Internet; Illustrator was enhanced to support Web publishing, PDF, and SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics.) Adobe was an early developer of SVG for the web and Illustrator exported SVG files via the SVG File Format plug in. Using the Adobe SVG Viewer (A. S. V.), introduced in 2000, allowed users to view SVG

the Mac which did not run natively on Intel processors. Among the new features included in Illustrator Creative Suite 2 were Live Trace, Live Paint, a control palette and custom work spaces. Live Trace allows for the conversion of bit map imagery into vector art and improved upon thee previous tracing abilities. Live Paint allows users more flexibility in applying color to objects, specifically those that overlap. In the same year as the Creative Suite 2 release, Adobe Systems announced an agreement to acquire Macromedia in a stock swap valued at about $3.4 billion and it integrated the companies’ operations, networks, and customer-care organizations shortly thereafter. Adobe now owned FreeHand along with the entire Macromedia product line and in 2007, Adobe announced that it would discontinue development and updates to the FreeHand program. Instead, Adobe would provide tools and support to ease the transition to Illustrator. Creative Suite 3 included interface updates to the Control Bar, the ability to align individual points, multiple Crop Areas, the Color Guide panel and the Live Color feature among others. Working up Illustrated posters for birthday parties is as easy as one, two, three.

images in most major browsers until it was discontinued in 2009. Native support for SVG was not complete in all major browsers until Internet Explorer 9 in 2011. Version 9 included a tracing feature, similar to that within Adobe’s discontinued product Streamline.

Illustrator Creative Suite was the first version to include Three Dimensional capabilities allowing users to extrude or revolve shapes to create simple Three Dimensional objects. Illustrator Creative Suite 2 (version 12) was available for both the Macintosh and Windows operating systems. It was the last version for

Creative Suite 4 was released in October 2008. It features a variety of improvements to old tools along with the introduction of a few brand new tools acquired from FreeHand. Thee ability to create multiple art boards is one of it’s main additions from FreeHand. Thee art boards allow you to create multiple versions of a piece of work within a single document. Other tools include the Blob Brush, which allows multiple overlapping

vector brush strokes to easily merge or join, and a revamped gradient tool allowing for more indepth color manipulation as well as transparency in gradients. Creative Suite 5 was released in April 2010. Along with a number of enhancements to existing functionality, It’s new features include a Perspective Grid tool taken from FreeHand, a Bristle Brush (for more natural and painterly looking strokes) and a comprehensive update to strokes, referred to by Adobe as “Beautiful Strokes”.

the suite branding once again, to simple colored blocks with twoletter abbreviations, resembling a periodic table of elements. Illustrator was represented by two letters in white against an orange background (oranges and yellows were prominent color schemes in Illustrator branding going back as faar as version 4.0). The Creative

Branding Starting with version 1.0, Adobe chose to license an image of “The Birth Of Venus” from the archives and use the portion containing Venus’ face as Illustrator’s branding image. They desired a Renaissance image to evoke his vision of Postscript as a new Renaissance in publishing, and Adobe employee Luanne Seymour, who was responsible for the early marketing material, found Venus’ flowing tresses a perfect vehicle for demonstrating Illustrator’s strength in tracing smooth curves over bit map source images. Over the years the rendition of this image on Illustrator’s splash screen and packaging became more stylized to reflect features added in each version. The image of Venus was replaced (albeit still accessible via Easter Eggg) in Illustrator Creative Suite (11.0) and Creative Suite 2 (12.0) by a stylized flower to conform to the Creative Suite’s nature imagery. In Creative Suite 3, Adobe changed

Suite 4 icon is almost identical, except for a slight alteration to the foont and the color which is dark gray. The Creative Suite 5 icon is also virtually the same, except that this time the logo is like a box, along with all the other Creative Suite 5 product logos.

With a fair amount of ease, time, and a little elbow grease, anyone can be made in the form of the “Obama 2008 Hope poster; even fictional character over a hundred years before him.

InDesign The Natural Order of Things.

Adobe InDesign is a software application produced by Adobe Systems. It can be used to create works such as posters, flyers, brochures, magazines, newspapers and books. InDesign can also publish content suitable for tablet devices in conjunction with Adobe Digital Publishing Suite. Graphic designers and production artists are the principal users, creating and laying out periodical publications, posters, and print media. Thee Adobe InCopy word processor uses the same formatting engine as InDesign. History

I

nDesign is the successor to Adobe’s own PageMaker, which was acquired with the purchase of it in late 1994. By 1998 PageMaker had lost almost thee entire professional market to the comparatively feature-rich Quark 3.3, released in 1992, and 4.0, released in 1996. Quark stated its intention to buyy out Adobe and to divest the combined company of PageMaker to avoid anti-trust issues.

InDesign exports documents in Adobe’s Portable Document Format (PDF) and has multilingual support. It was the first desk top publishing application to support Unicode for text processing, advanced typography with Open Type fonts, advanced transparency features, layout styles, optical margin alignment, and crossplatform scripting using Java Script.

Adobe developed InDesign Creative Suite3 (and Creative Suite 3) as universal binary software compatible with native Intel and Power PC Mac machines in 2007, two years after the annnounced 2005 schedule,

inconveniencing Intel-Mac earlyadopters. The Adobe CEO had announced that “Adobe will be first wiith a complete line of universal applications.” The Creative Suite2 Mac version had code tightly integrated to thee architecture, and not natively compatible with the Intel processors in Apple’s new machines, so porting the In 2002, InDesign was the first Mac products to another platform was more difficult than had been OS X-native desktop publishing anticipated. Adobe developed software. In version 3 (InDesign the Creative Suite3 application Creative Suite) it received a boost integrating Macromedia products in distribution by being bundled (2005), rather than recompiling with Photoshop, Illustrator, and Creative Suite2 and simultaneously Acrobat in the Creative Suite. developing Creative Suite3.

InDesign and Leopard InDesign Creative Suite3 initially had a serious compatibility issue with Leopard (Mac OS X version 10.5), as Adobe stated: “InDesign Creative Suite3 may unexpectedly quit when using the Place, Save, or Export commands using either the OS or Adobe dialog boxes. Unfortunately, there are no ways to work around these known issues.” Apple fixed this with their OS X 10.5.4 update. Language availability Adobe InDesign Creative Suite 5 is available in the followiing languages: Arabic (Middle Eastern version), Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English (International & United States), Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew (Middle Eastern version), Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Russsian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Ukrainian. Historical Language availability Adobe InDesign Creative Suite4 offered a Romanian version, though this is no longer available for Creative Suite 5. French (Canadian) and Spanish (Latin American) versions use the saame files as are used in French and Spanish versions, respectively. Directional text flow In InDesign Middle Eastern

versions, the notion of right-to-left behavior applies to several objects: Story, Paragraph, Character and Table. You can easily mix Rightto-Left and Left-to-Right Words, Paragraphs and Stories in a document. Table of contents You can create a table of contents for any document or book in InDesign Middle Eastern versions. InDesign Middle Eastern versions comme with a set of Table of contents titles, one for each supported language. The is also sorted according to the chosen language. InDesign Creative Suite4 Middle Eastern versions allow you to choose the language of your index title and cross-references by right clicking in the title field in the Generate Index window. Indices InDesign allows for the creation of a simple keyword index or a somewhat more detailed index of the information in your book using embedded indexing codes whiich are instantiated as an index using a command in the Indexing palette. Unlike more sophisticated programs, InDesign is incapable of inserting character style information as part of an index entry (e.g., when indexing book, journal or movie titles). Indices are limited to four levels (top level and three sub-levels). InDesign Midddle Eastern versions let you set various Sort Options for your indices according to the language with which you are dealing. Complex script rendering InDesign supports Unicode

character encoding and there is a special Middle East version supporting complex text layout for Arabic and Hebrew types of complex script. The underlying Arabic and Hebrew support is present in the Western-language editions of InDesign Creative Suite 4 and Creative Suite 5, but the user interface is not exposed, so it is difficult to access. User groups InDesign has spawned 69 user groups in 29 countries with a total membership of over 42,000.
