Lewis, a Midwest Elite baseball player, caught the attention of Oklahoma thanks to his play in the field and his ability to hit with power. Lewis said

“Since I was young I’ve always wanted to go to OU. I’ve attended camps there from the time I was 10, so when they offered me a scholarship I knew that was where I wanted to go. It’s close to home, which gives my family a chance to come to the games,” said Lewis.

Gavyn Wheeler is one of the studs coming out of the 2019 class. The lefthanded pitcher and first baseman is the type of player every coach wants in the lineup. The lefty throws hard and is a terror at the plate. Now that his sophomore season is over Wheeler will turn his attention to playing summer ball. “I’m playing summer ball with my school team here at Comanche,” said Wheeler. The offers are expected to start coming in as he prepares for his

Shortstop Corbin Ramos from Elgin High School makes the list and it’s no surprise he received more than 17,000 votes. The infielder make highlight plays every game and has the speed to motor around the bases. Ramos is the perfect player to make the Fan’s Choice baseball team.

Binger-Oney senior Cody Milligan has great instincts as a catcher and his play has earned him a spot on the Oklahoma State Cowboys roster next year. Milligan played a crucial role in Binger-Oney winning five baseball titles in the last four years. The Plainview community loves their athletes no matter which sport is competing. Like Addie Norton, Saxon Ross was voted by the fans to the All-SWOK golf team. Ross and his teammates on the golf team finished second in points just behind Oklahoma Christian School. Ross finished his three rounds tied for 14th and sandwiched between two teammates, Conner Kessler and Patrick Clowe.

Seeing the amount of the support the community of Plainview has shown her was a humbling experience for Adeline Norton. Known by her friends as “Addie,” her accomplishments on the golf course this season were just one reason Plainview supported one of their own. Golf can be a lonely sport and for Norton, knowing she has so many people behind her helps when things don’t go your way.

Other players receiving votes include Tyler Neher of Plainview, Jared Williams of Sulphur and Brandon Bell of Dickson.

Being a member of a state championship team in golf means you and your teammates pulled their weight on the golf course. The pressure to perform is real, but the Plainview team pulled through. It wasn’t until they returned home that the realization of what they accomplished really set in.

STATE TRACK RECAP

Hobart Boys Track The Hobart boyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s track team made everyone take notice at the state track meet held at Western Heights High School in Oklahoma City. The sprinters made the biggest splash with as the Hobart boyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s track team won the Class 2A boys state title by a huge margin.

The closest competitor was Pawhuska with 54 points, while Hobart loaded the bus with 114 points and the title.

Senior Tahvey Timmons nearly grabbed the top spot on the podium in the 200 meters. His time of 22.75 placed him in second. Timmons would go on to place in several relay events. Another senior Michael Williams placed 3rd in the 400 meters with a time of 52.08. Like Timmons, Williams would later play a crucial role on the relay teams.

Sophomore Brady Carpenter, the teams best distance runner, ran to the gold in the 1600 meters coming in at 4:39.00 and placed 3rd in the 800-meters. Hurdle specialist Khalil Norris finished with a time of 41.50, good enough for third place.

The 4X100 team consisting of Timmons, Williams, Juwan Nugent and TJ McMurray placed 3rd, before the 4X200 team took first. That team featured Timmons, Norris, Williams and McMurray running the anchor. Simon Chounlamany joined Williams, Norris and Carpenter in the 4X400 relay and that group placed 3rd. Garrett Haworth and Brett Perry joined Carpenter and Norris on the 4X800 relay team and finished in 2nd. The success of the relay teams put Hobart over the top on points giving them the state title.

But in the field events Joe Greaves Jr. added a 2nd place finish in the high jump and a 3rd place finish in the long jump. Sophomore Jayden Carroll placed 7th in the discus.

Overall the team made it a day to remember in Hobart track history. Several members of the relay teams will graduate, but the team is in good hands with the players left behind. Expect Hobart to keep this high level of competition going into the 2018 season.

ELGIN ATHLETES

Elgin Breakout Players of the Year Story By Kyle Payne Izzy Cummings Izzy Cummings just finished up her sophomore season for the Elgin Owls and took her place as a difference maker for them. During the season, Cummings took on a big scoring role for the team, averaging nearly 12 points a game for the 17-9 Owls. It wasn’t just the scoring that helped her break out this season; she averaged nearly three rebounds, steals and assists for the season, cementing her role as an all around player. Her head coach Brett Tahah called Cummings “a coaches dream,” highlighting her work ethic and dedication to the game as two things that helped set her, and her team up for a successful season. Cummings knows it’s about more than wins and losses, but Tahah said that “she hates losing

If Izzy isn’t on the hardwood, you can find her staying in shape running in both crosscountry and track. She is a two time state qualifier in both cross-country and track, showing her range as an athlete. With the Owls in full support of Izzy, look for her breakout season to continue into next year and watch the Owls soar to new heights. Jacob Dawson Starting Pitcher Jacob Dawson elevated his game this year, culminating in a perfect season. Dawson was a steady choice at the mound every game he appeared in, finishing his junior campaign a perfect 7-0 with an almost invisible ERA of .75. When I asked head coach Levi Garrett who really stepped it up for this team, Dawson was his answer almost immediately.

a spot in regionals, where Dawson and company only allowed three runs during the tournament. One important component of baseball goes beyond the field and enters the realm of superstition. Whenever Dawson pitches, he must wear short pants and be chewing watermelon gum. And before each inning, Dawson touches the gloves of his first and third basemen. Baseball is just one small piece if the Jacob Dawson puzzle. Dawson’s impact on the team looks to carry over into summer ball and will look at him to be their ace next spring.

She is a phenomenal teammate and that is why she is the Altus Character Counts Athlete of the Month.

This year at the state track meet Dollins finished in fifth place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.88. Dollins’ time at state was down from he regional time of 16.12 which earned her a third place finish at that meet.

Just like a true teammate though Dollins was quick to acknowledge her teammates and how hard they worked all year.

With those types of results you may think Dollins brimmed with confidence but to hear her tell it that was not the case.

“After prelims the day before, I knew it would take everything I had to make it to the podium. My nerves were very high after I found out I made it to the finals. At the hotel that night before finals, the parents made us pictures from when we were little and ones from this year. The quote at the bottom of the picture read, ‘Look how far you’ve come.’ After reading that I realized I just need to go out there and have

College track is for sure going to a different experience, but I’m excited to further my career,” Dollins said.

Altus High School has a history of strong athletics. The Bulldogs have six state titles in boys track, three in boys swimming, two in baseball, football, girls golf, girls track and wrestling. The Bulldogs also have one title in girls basketball, boys cross country, boys golf, boys tennis and dual wrestling.

What some people may not know is that the Bulldogs have a dynasty that only continues to get stronger in Shooting Sports. Since the programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inception and first state shoot in fall of 2013, Altus has taken home the top trophy.

This season Altus came in as the top Southwest Region qualifier and was able to hold off top Northeast Region qualifier Sequoyah High School. The win was somewhat of an upset as Altus shot a 201 in regional competition and Sequoyah shot a 207.

At the state meet however, the Bulldogs broke 216 of a possible 250 in the title round of the 2017 state shoot to take home first place honors and continue their dominance.

Altus is among more than 150 schools participating in OKSSSP, a trap-based program offered through the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s suite of outdoor education programs. The Bulldogs were led by heavy hitter Hunter Pence who finished in a

three-way tie for first place. Pence shot a perfect 25 in regular competition. Pence lost out in the tiebreaker round but finished in second place overall just behind Kaden Hans from Blair.

Gannon Smith and Justin Sward also placed among the top 20 shooters at the competition for Altus. On the girls side Erin Waldrop placed third individually for Altus after losing a tiebreaker for second place with McKinzie Jones from Sequoyah.

Mangum Academic Athlete of the Month Jayce Nippert A talented player on the diamond and the basketball court, Jayce Nippert has made the most of the opportunities in and out of the classroom at Mangum High School.

Nippert carries a 4.0 grade point average and is involved in several clubs at school. “I’m currently in gifted and talented, National Honor Society and I serve on the student council,” said Nippert. This year the softball team made the Class 4A state softball tournament held at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. Nippert said competing at state as a sophomore meant she needed to step up her game. “I enjoyed the challenge of competing at state. You really have to step up and do your part to help the team during your sophomore year.” The community support the team had

going into the tournament was great, but Nippert is quick to point out the support goes beyond athletics.

“I love how supportive the whole community is of not only athletics but academics also.” And the support from her family has taught her many things in athletics and in life.

“Sports have always been a part of my life. We are very competitive and love the atmosphere that competitive athletics provides. My grandma teaches at my high school and I’ve been in her classes and I’ve learned how important it is to work hard and always do your best academically and athletically,” said Nippert. History is her favorite class at Mangum, but her education aspirations go beyond one subject. “History, because I’ve always liked

reading about people in the past and how we evolved to where we are now. I plan to further my education at OU, I haven’t really decided what I want to study but some things that I’m really interested in are the medical field and law. It’s very important because you need a good education to help you succeed in the career you choose,” said Nippert.

Rodeo is a sport that has a multitude of variables. From the weather, to the livestock, to the performance horses the competitors ride, rodeo athletes rarely have an opportunity to compete under perfect conditions. Yet, individuals with a strong work ethic and a healthy competitive nature, such

as Ringling native, Mikayla Phillips, rise to the top time and again.

One thing is for certain, regardless of which university is fortunate to add Phillips to their roster, she is sure to continue along the winning path that she has become so familiar with.

With her continued success in the rodeo arena, Phillips has a variety of university transfer options available to her as she continues to pursue her educational and rodeo goals.

Western Oklahoma State College in Altus, OK is proud to have Phillips’ name on their intercollegiate rodeo roster this year. After earning the 2015 Oklahoma High School Rodeo State Breakaway Roping title, Phillips was heavily recruited out of high school and ultimately chose to attend SEOSU her first year of college. However, always striving to better herself, Phillips decided that a move to Western for her sophomore year of college would help her to improve her roping skills and would also allow her to pursue a degree in agriculture.

DeForest, a past national collegiate rodeo champion, offered one of his horses to carry her through. Along with the move to Western, Phillips credits this generosity in helping her to earn her second consecutive trip to the College National Finals Rodeo where she will compete to earn her own National Intercollegiate Rodeo Title. Coach DeForest is excited for the opportunity that Phillips has to excel on the national level this June.

Hinton Track Comet freshman makes it look easy. Story By Larry Lester At the regional track meet in Stroud on May 1, Hinton Comets’ freshmen phenom Dagen Boling made it known he was a contender to earn a medal at the state meet. Boling won the 400-meter dash at the regional meet with a time of 51.25. At the state meet less than a week later Boling again ran very well. In the preliminary race Boling ran a 52.23 and qualified for the finals in sixth place. Then the next day Boling ran a fantastic time of 52.05 to place climb up a few spots on the leaderboard and finish in fourth place in the event.

The finish earned Hinton four points as a team at the meet but more importantly established that Dagen Boling is a name track fans need to get to know sooner rather than later.

Cyril Girls Track

The future is bright for the Cyril track team as several underclassmen make their way to the state meet and compete against a tough field of Class A athletes.

Freshman Brooklyn Rackley competed in the 100-meters, while sophomore Grace Young ran the 800-meters. Rackley didn’t make it out of the prelims, but she did gain the experience and knowledge of what it will take to get there a year from now. Young did compete in the finals and placed 16th overall.

One of the bright spots came when the girls 4X100 relay team placed 3rd with a time of 51.89. The relay teams finish would help the team to 19th place out of 44 teams receiving points during the event. Sophomore Fayth Laughlin had all eyes on her in the field events. Her 11th place finish in the long jump was significant for the team and sets the stage for next season. With a jump of 14-09.00, Laughlin is surely to improve and work her way to the podium next year. For the boys it was sophomore Cason McLemore who tied for ninth in the high jump. His leap of 5-08.00 didn’t make the podium, but does mean McLemore is on the cusp of making the podium.

Elk City Golf Places at State Story By Nate Olson The Elk City golf teams turned in good showings at the Class 4A state golf tournament last month.

The girls squad placed third and the boys were fourth. The senior-laden girls squad carded a 674, which was behind Hilldale (657) and champion Plainview (634).

The boys carded their best finish since finishing third five years ago. Elk City (921) finished behind Pouteau (913), Ada (912) and champion Heritage Hall (867). The Elks made a state tournament run with three freshmen contributing: Baylor Barnett, Tate Trotter and Brad Hargues.

The good news for Ellison, who is also the Elks girls basketball coach, is everyone returns next season other than Dyson. The Elks will also gain promising freshman Tres Hill who shot a personal-best 64 in March at Elk City Golf and Country Club. “We will have high hopes for next year,” Ellison said. “All of them work hard, and we get home from a tournament, and they are going to the golf course to practice or play. That’s what it takes to win.”

“A lot of times you might have one or two freshman on a team but to have three playing that well is pretty impressive,” Coach Tim Ellison said.

“I had hoped we could finish runner-up. It was tight the last six or seven holes with second third and fourth,” Ellison said. “We got close, and I was a little disappointed we couldn’t get there, but if you had give me fourth place in February or March I would have taken it.”

Kelcee Millican placed seventh (79-80) and Kinsley Hall, who will play college golf at St. Gregory’s University, tied for 10th (82-82). Both seniors earned all-state honors with the top 10 finishes. Sierra Stout tied for 16th (88-85), Baylee Miller tied for 22 (88-89) and Morgan Graham finished 74 (115-116).

Plainview is the best team from all classes, so we knew it was going to be a tough task, but that was still our goal. People asked how we played at state, and I said, ‘We had some good rounds, but we didn’t play great at the right time. Still, it was a great effort.”

Expectations ran high for the Elkettes after a third-place finish in 2016 under Hunt, who is in his second year of a second stint at the school after guiding the Elk City boys to three state titles and two runners-up and the girls to a state runners-up finish during11 years in the 1990s and 2000s. Elk City won seven of its nine tournaments this season and the regional championship for the second straight year.

To say coach Dennis Seifried has an eye for talent would be an understatement. The Weatherford track and field coach has made a career out of finding athletes in the most unlikely of places. That includes Justin Conkling, who went on to be an All-American at the University of Oklahoma.

Harris finished her senior year with multiple top 10 and top five finishes, according to Weatherford coach Kyle Mickley.

Mickley said Harris improvement was due to one thing. “She worked really hard this past summer with her dad,” Mickley said. “They spent a lot of time at the gold course, spent a lot of time chipping and putting. She’s been very dedicated to improving.

Harris will not play golf at the next level, but she will stay close to the game. “She is going to UCO where she will be part of the golf management program,” Mickley said. “So she is still going to be involved in it, still playing quite a bit, but not on the UCO golf team. She will have some type of PGA card status when she is done. Be able to do lessons or manage a golf course or something like

Male Athlete of the Year: Ian Hill

Seifried’s newest discovery was Ian Hill, a junior who already stared on the football and basketball team. But late into the spring season, just happened to be sitting in study hall when Seifried came knocking.

“It’s kind of an odd situation,” Seifried said. “I kept trying to find someone that could be a high jumper. I went and got him out of study hall. He was kind of in an offseason not doing much and I said ‘why don’t you come high jump. He said coach, I don’t know how to high jump.” Despite half of the track and field season already gone, Seifried convinced Hill to become the team’s high jumper. In his first meet, it didn’t seem like a good idea. “In his second track meet, we went to Woodard for the conference track meet and he jumped 6-foot-7,” Seifried said. “I’m going what the heck. I’m going I know I’m not that good of a coach.”

Hill went on to win the Class 5A high jump with a leap of 6-foot-8 after competing in a total of five events in his career. He then went down and took the high jump championship at the Meet of Champions. “I think next he may be the premier jumper in the state,” Seifried said. “He might be a 7-foot, 7-2 jumper.”

She’s the type of leader every coach wants on his or her team. She’s the type of person that every community wants representing them as a student-athlete. This year as a sophomore Brown won the Class 4A state cross country championship, something Brown said is her favorite memory as an athlete. “It means a lot to me because at regionals I had collapsed about 200 yards before the finish line due to dehydration. However, my team quailed for the state meet which gave me one more shot to redeem my self so, I put that behind me and trained hard the following week to preform at the state meet. Brown’s performance at the state meet helped Weatherford take home fifth place as a team but Brown wasn’t done there.

In the spring Brown helped Weatherford to 63 team points, good enough for the silver honors at the meet. “This year track season went amazing! As a team we placed runner-up, which is the first trophy the girls team have ever brought home from the state meet,” Brown said. “We were

runner-up in the two-mile relay and I was runner-up in the mile run. Also we won the mile relay and I won the two-mile run, I would say it went very well this year.” While it obviously took amazing performances on the track it also took amazing teamwork, something that Brown acknowledged quickly. “Honestly, we are one big family. We are always joking around about something and I love how we are always there for each other and how we all had one goal this season so it was fun to share that experience with them,” Brown said. Brown isn’t content with what she has already accomplished though. She is already thinking, planning and training for next spring. “I’m very excited for the next track season with the up coming freshman. Because we have a few really great runners coming up into the high school level and they will fill up the places we lacked and where we are losing some great seniors at this year, so that gives us another great chance of winning the whole state meet next year.”

Weatherford Makes a Run Story By Ryan Stone The Weatherford Eagles baseball team had a special season making it to the state semifinals. The Eagles came up just short in the semi’s as they fell to Bing 8-7 to finish their season with a record of 30-9. The Eagles also went 11-1 in a very good Class 4A-1 district and won the regional tournament.

They may not have won a state championship, but coach Todd Gaunt knows this was a special season.

“The fact that they overachieved made it special,” said Gaunt, “usually when you have a great season like we did you have several guys that are going to play college ball and that wasn’t the case this year, we just had a bunch of seniors that came together and did something special.”

Coach Gaunt also noted that this year’s team had to deal with some new factors

like districts in 4A and also the first year with a pitch count. Weatherford did have a couple guys that led the way and will be playing college ball. Leading the way was Ryan Terry on the mound. Terry was 9-0 this season with an ERA under 1.75 and was also a really good third baseman. Terry will stay in Weatherford to play college baseball at Southwestern Oklahoma State.

Senior catcher Bryce Pruitt had a special season as well. Pruitt hit .465 with four homeruns and 45 RBI’s. Pruitt is still weighing offers from a few schools including Redlands. Coach Gaunt also noted that there were a lot of questions about this team coming into the season.

“There were a lot of unknowns coming into the season. We had to get better and these guys took that to heart and worked

to make it happen,” said Gaunt.

Last year the Eagles were 25-15 and played most of the year without two of their best players. Jay Whitson and Wade Haugen, who are both now playing at Redlands, missed the majority of the season due to injuries. “In the long run those injuries helped this year’s team get better,” said Gaunt, “young guys had to come in and play last year because of those injuries and ultimately that helped this team be so successful.”

Gaunt says what he’ll remember most about this team is the senior class.

“They did a great job leading the team and keeping them together. They were able to keep the team focused on our goal,” said Gaunt.

This was certainly a special season for Weatherford Eagles baseball.

Clinton Breakout Athlete- KaNeisha Jackson Story By Jordan Edwards KaNeisha Jackson is a legacy when it comes to track and field. Jackson began her track career because of her dad who ran track when he was in high school. Jackson is well rounded when it comes to the events she competes in.

Track has not always been easy for Jackson. She has been struggling with Scoliosis for the past seven years and has been dealing with the extra stress of almost having surgery and constantly wearing

a back brace. Jackson has gotten better in stronger through her pain and continues to succeed.

Jackson has won many awards including; Conference Champion, Regional Champion, State RunnerUp, State Champion and All-State. Jackson will be attending University of Arkansas at Little Rock and will be majoring in Pre-Med.

She competes in the 4x100, 4x200, 4x400, 100m, 200m, 400m and 300m hurdles and seems to succeed in all of her events. Her biggest influence plays major two

roles in Jackson’s life, as her coach and her dad. He knows her on and off the track and knows her drive and personality extremely well. Jackson likes that track is something bigger than yourself, “I love that track is a team sport as well as an individual sport,” Jackson said.

Anadarko Academic Athlete of the Month Kyle White Anadarko junior Kyle White brings a focus to the classroom and he brings that same focus to the track. That focus is what helped White shine in multiple events in May. At the regional meet in Madill, White competed in four different events. As an individual, White competed in the 300-meter hurdles and placed second with a time of 41.51. White then ran on Anadarkoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400-meter relays. In the 4x200 White helped the Warriors place fourth at the regional meet. Then in the 4x400 White and the Warriors

placed fifth while in the 4x100 they placed sixth.

At the state meet White continued to perform at a high level and earned a medal for his effort in the 300-meter hurdles. In the preliminary race, White placed fifth and ran a time of 42.24 to qualify for the finals the next day. In the finals White shaved nearly a second off his time and

ran a 41.54 to take home fourth place.

Anadarko Baseball: Greg Moser Anadarko’s baseball team may not have had the type of season they wanted from a record standpoint but one bright spot did emerge for the Warriors. Freshman pitcher and infielder Gage Moser proved that he is a player to watch in the coming years.

“Even though we didn’t have the season we wanted. I don’t think of it as a total loss because I learned a lot. I put in many hours of practice it was very exciting to play on a high school team coach Borden challenged me with many hours of practice,” Moser said. “Tracy Anderson our pitching coach and my dad helped me through the year with my pitching I became more consistent and

more confident about throwing the ball. Coach Borden helped me with my hitting and it improved greatly over the season.” Although the record wasn’t what Moser had hoped it would be Moser praised his teammates and their work ethic.

On the baseball field next season Moser said he hopes to improve his velocity and command of his pitches on the mound as well as continuing to improve on his hitting in order to eventually realize his dream of playing baseball at the DI level.

Chickasha Girls Track Running To Win Story By Doug Neidermeyer The Chickasha team competed at the state meet held at Yukon High School and thrower Nikita Sampson was the shinning star.

Entering regionals Sampson was the odds-on favorite to take both shot-put and discus competitions and she did just that. In the shot-put Sampson’s throw of 36-11.75 was good enough to take first place over a talented field that featured Sadie Boos of Bishop Kelley and Micalah Millard of Skiatook.

In the discus Sampson had the same outcome throwing for 104-04 and taking first place. Julieann Gilmore of Shawnee placed second with a toss of 100-03.

That set up Sampson as one of the top performers in the shot-put this season and heading to state Sampson was considered to be one of the favorites in the event.

At the state meet Sampson upped her game and her distance on her throws and in the shot she hit the 39-04.00 mark, which was good enough for 2nd place.

Sampson did improve her throw in the discus going 104-07, but the distance wasn’t good enough to find the podium.

Regardless, Sampson will return for her senior season to lead the track team. In the relay’s the Chickasha girl’s

placed in two events, the 4X100 and the 4X200. The 4X100 team placed 5th, while the 4X200 team finished in 8th.

Another athlete returning to the team next season is Tamia Murry. Murry finished 9th in the long jump with a leap of 15-11.00. The future of the track program is in capable hands and the expectations are once again on the rise in Chickasha.

RYAN TRACK

Ryan Track: Representing in Style In 2017 the Ryan High School track team made significant strides to becoming the program head coach Steve Spangler has envisioned.

Taking over a program and building it from the ground up is never easy. It’s a task that coach Spangler has accepted in his first season, but with so many underclassmen on the roster, coach Spangler understood the

team would need some time.

As the season went forward it was becoming obvious that several of the athletes on the girl’s team were making gains that could potentially find them competing at state.

That’s exactly what happened with a pair of freshmen in Juliet Spangler and Lily York. Spangler qualified for the 1600 and 3200-meters at state, while York made the 3200-meter event as well. The two have pushed each other all season and their desire to represent Ryan High School at state became a reality. During the season the pair also teamed up for relay events with sophomore Holland Carter and junior McKenzie Lewis. At state Spangler finished 16th in the 1600-meters and 13th in the 3200. York finished 16th in the 3200-meters.

“We were led by freshman Juliet Spangler this year. She won every 3200-meter event this year and won the 1600-meters in all but one meet where she finished in second,” said coach Spangler.

Carter is a multi-sport star playing basketball, cross-country, track and cheer. She also carries a 4.0 GPA. Other athletes making the team this year include Sam Good who participated in the long jump and high jump, McKenzie Keith a sprinter and long jumper, Sadie Guzman who runs sprints and relays, Tracey Martin a sprinter and throwers Morgan McGhlghy and Brooklyn Chermason.

The optimism for the next season of Ryan High School track is high and the returning athletes will have a better idea as to what they can expect. Look for this team to continue improving.

MOM OF THE Kristi Howell Story By Andee Beth Fitts Kristi Howell and her husband Clay are always familiar faces in the crowd of any Duncan athletic event. From fall to spring, Kristi can be seen taking pictures at the softball field, the basketball court, and on the track as she cheers on daughter Falon (a senior at Duncan High School) and the rest of her teammates.

Kristi is again armed with her camera and always willing to help out. She is the snack bag coordinator for all away basketball games and was the cocoordinator for senior night this year as well. Kristi also helped bring food for the hospitality room during each of Duncan’s basketball tournaments and made posters

for senior night as well as for playoffs. During track season, Kristi doesn’t stop helping in any way that she can. She takes pictures for the track banners, makes snack bags, and cheers on all of the Demons to victory. In addition to all of this, Kristi is also helping with Project Graduation, which provides seniors with a safe and fun environment after graduation, this year. She has also worked at the STIM Lab for 27 years. If she has any time to spare, Kristi enjoys gardening.

When asked why she believes it is so important to support the Duncan community and Duncan athletics Kristi says, “I just enjoy watching. These kids are our future; they are going to be taking care of us and working alongside us someday. It’s important to support them and build their confidence so they can pursue their dreams, not just in

athletics, but in their education as well.” Kristi is more often than not heard in the stands, not only cheering on her daughter, but also any other kid who needs a cheerleader as well. For her strong support of Duncan athletics through her willingness to serve and support all Duncan athletes, Kristi Howell is most deserving of VYPE magazine’s Duncan Mom of the Month.

Kristi is kept busy all school year with different sports activities as Falon is involved in softball, basketball, track, and competes on a traveling softball team as well. During softball season, along with taking photographs, she helps prepare snack bags for all of the girls’ away games. She also helped coordinate senior night last year for the 2015-16 softball seniors. Kristi attends all of the games for both Duncan and the travel team. She plans to continue to be involved as Falon continues her softball career for the USAO Drovers in college. When basketball season rolls around,

Clinton, Duncan, Marlow all Take Titles Clinton Girls Win Soccer Title In typical Class 4A fashion the girls bracket for the 4A soccer tournament was loaded with heavy-hitters. Verdigris, Newkirk, Metro Christian, Wagoner and Santa Fe South were all hopefuls to bring home the gold, but Clinton had the talent that would give them their first state title in soccer.

Making it to the semifinals in two previous years wasn’t satisfying for goalkeeper Nadia Wandrie. Now a junior, Wandrie helped Clinton to two trips to the semifinals and making it past the final round was a goal she and her teammates set at the beginning of the season.

Clinton ended the season 18-1 with 15 total shutouts and the gold ball.

Marlow Tops Purcell To Win Class 3A Girls Golf Mia Mesell who a two-day score of 169 at the Class 3A golf tournament held at Cherokee Springs in Tahlequah. Her score was tops for the Marlow girls placing her 8th overall. Teammates Alexis Hack, Alli Riddle, Kirstyn Elroy, and Brittany Yates would all need to step up in tough conditions on day two if Marlow was going to compete for a team title. And that’s exactly what they did. Hack was consistent on both days shooting an 88, which was big considering nearly every competitor shot a higher score on day two.

Purcell was in the same boat. ShaeBug Scarberry was their top golfer finishing second, while Jade McCundy placed 6th, but the scores were tallied Marlow was tied with Purcell to force a playoff. Marlow only needed one hole to win and bring home the state title. Purcell finished 2nd followed by Lone Grove, Comanche and Henryetta to round out the top five.

The state golf tournament is no stranger to playoff victories for individuals, but when two teams must compete for that title it certainly makes for an amazing finish. Duncan and Collinsville were tied at 694 points thanks to the play of Vanessa Moore who shot a two-day total of 166 at finished 6th overall followed by Brooklyn Bostick and her score of 175 and a 13th place finish. A trio of Duncan golfers finished grouped together as Emily Kirkland, Gentry Cox and Maddie Masch shot 180, 180 and 181 respectively. Their three scores were better than their Collinsville counterparts, giving them a lower point total for the tournament.

The win marked the schools 12th state title in girls golf.

During the regular season she recorded 10 shutouts and only lost one contest at the start of the season to Harrah. After that loss to Harrah, Clinton outscored opponents 72-6. In the state tournament Wandrie continued to blank opponents as she shut out every team they faced. In the finals Clinton faced Santa Fe South, but overwhelmed them with five goals and kept steady pressure on the offensive end.

Ardmore Girls Track: Good As Gold! Yukon High School was the site for the 2017 Class 5A state track meet and the Ardmore girlâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s track team left an impression on the field.

Sophomore sprinter Quintaija Armstrong did what she has done for most of the season; set the tone for the team to follow. The sophomore won the 400-meter race giving the team crucial points toward the overall team score. Armstrong, also a member of the

relay teams, is a big reason the track program at Ardmore is excited for the future. Another sophomore Tieronay Banks placed 2nd just behind Armstrong in the 400-meters. The

pair is nearly impossible to beat. Armstrong finished the race with a time of 57.71, while Banks crossed the line at 59.21.

Junior track star Jaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;sades Ainsworth competed in the 100-meters and 200-meters placing 6th and 4th respectively.

The relay teams put the Ardmore girls in a position for a high finish in team points as the 4X100 team raced to a second place finish with a time of 48.54. The 4X200 team won the event defeating track rivals Del City with a time of 1:41.96. That was followed up by the 4X400 team that placed second finishing the race at 3:59.04.

When the dust settled the Ardmore girls were sitting in second place with a score of 75 points. Several SWOK teams placed in the top ten including Duncan, Eisenhower, Elgin, and Altus.

Plainview Breakout Performer Parker Foster Plainview High School senior Parker Foster graduates as one of the top student-athletes in his class.

The wide receiver/defensive back on the football team and track star made a name for himself as a selfless teammate that works hard and always puts the team first. This year in track Foster competed in the 300 meter hurdles, and was a member on the 400, 800 and 1600 meter relay teams.

At the state meet Foster was edged out at the finish line in the 300 hurdles placing second in the event. His time of 39.91 was just .04 seconds from first place. As the third leg of the 400-meter relay team, the Indians finished 10th overall with a mark of 3:32.00. Foster’s efforts helped the team to an overall finish of ninth place in team points. Recently Foster was honored by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes as an All-State recipient.

“Making FCA All-State was a bigger honor than I could’ve imagined receiving. I always dreamt of making All-State but never thought about making it in FCA. The things that happened to me and the people around me last

year and this past year have changed me so much as a person,” said Foster. “I realize that some people may not think it is as big of a deal, but if I had to choose between receiving All-State in Football, Track, or FCA I would choose FCA every time.” The Plainview graduate has enjoyed his time as an Indian and wears the title of student-athlete with pride.

“The thing that I love the most about being a student athlete at Plainview is that I am a STUDENT athlete not a student ATHLETE. Plainview doesn’t take it easy on you just because you play sports,” said Foster. But many of the good memories did come on the field of competition. “My best memory as an athlete was coming out on the field for the state championship football game. Knowing everything that had happened that year and finally getting to the place you had been dreaming about forever was amazing,” said Foster.

Foster now looks to his future, which involves attending the University of Oklahoma. “Next year I am going to OU and working to make it into Dental School. I also am going to
