bringing the high intensity play to the floor is Tymeica Royal (5-6, Sr.). The forward was an 8.0 point, 3.0 assist player last year and should have ample opportunities to increase those numbers. Mandy Steel (5-10, Jr.) crashed the boards for the Lady Lions grabbing 5.0 rebounds and scoring 6.0 points. Lakymbria Threadgill (5-7, So.) and Baylie Bray (5-6, So.) are two talented sophomores coach Griffin expects to see quality minutes this season.

BOYS Cody Carlisle (1st year) 12-13 Record 6-18 Outlook: With just one senior back from last year, coach Cody Carlisle is hopeful that a talented and athletic group of underclassmen will be able to rise to the occasion. Senior forward Alex Frazier (14ppg/7reb) will be called upon to lead the charge for the Eagles. But he’ll have some help from a group of youngsters who all saw action as freshmen last year in Cole Mooney (8ppg/6reb), Takota London (8ppg/5stls), Jimmy Parks (3ppg), and Derek Jamison (6ppg). “We’re a very young basketball team with four sophomores in the starting lineup,” says Carlisle, who’s doing double-duty coaching both the boys and girls this season. “I still expect us to be able to contend this year and set the stage for a bright future regardless of what happens this season.” Alex Frazier Cole Mooney Takota London Jimmy Parks Derek Jamison Valentine Godt Matt McCoy

BOYS Burtchal Griffin (6th year) 12-13 Record: 28-6 Outlook: With four returning starters from a team that won 28 games last year, the Lions have the look of a Class 2A contender. Junior Griffin (6-2, Sr.) averaged 16 points, 5.0 assists and 2.0 steals last year. Griffin was named to the VYPE Top 100 this season and is expected to be one of Class 2A’s top players. Teammate Isaiah Deffern (5-10, Sr.) and James Pollard are two players coach Griffin is looking to for solid play on both ends of the floor. Oscar Riveria (6-0, Jr.) was named to the preseason All-VYPE Team after his 16 points and 3.0 assists last year. The third senior in the lineup is guard Hyden Grimes (6-1) who averaged 13 points and 4.0 rebounds a year ago. The trio of Griffin, Riveria and Grimes will be tough to stop this season. Finding consistent play in the paint will be the focus early. Look for a tournament run from the Lions this season. GIRLS Casey Butcher (4th year) 12-13 Record: 26-4 Outlook: With four starters plus an experienced bench filled with players, there’s no surprise that the Lady Eagles open the season ranked number two in Class B basketball seeking another trip to the state tournament. VYPE Top 100 selection Baylee Evans (16.7ppg) will join Myranda Rowland (10.1ppg), Paige Campagna (6.5ppg) and Brittany Ward (8.9ppg) in the lineup along with Rainey Mauzey (7.6ppg). The defensive minded

attack consistently forces opponents turnover creating scoring chance in an up-tempo style of play. “These girls are exciting to watch play,” smiled head coach Casey Butcher. “They simply refuse to lose. Our team chemistry and competitive defensive approach gives us another solid team top to bottom. Our goal is to out work everybody else.” Baylee Evans 5-5 Myranda Rowland 5-9 Tara Dill 5-9 Paige Campagna 5-4 Bailee Davis 5-4 Savanna Lovell 5-3 Heather Edington 5-5 Rainey Mauzey 5-10 Brittany Ward 5-6 Shay Paul 5-10 Kristina Sherrill 5-4 Kalyn Grogan 5-5 Shay Stacey 5-6

BOYS Trey Booth (11th year) 12-13 Record: 27-5 Outlook: The Eagles appear ready to return to the “Big House” after a 27win season that ended in the Class B semi-finals last season. The “dynamic duo” of Tyler Parks (16.4ppg) and Bryce Deatherage (8.2ppg/7.0asst) energize a lineup that presents opponents plenty of challenges on both ends of the court. Colt Browne (6.0ppg) and Jace Blaylock complete a four guard offense while the workhorse on the blocks DeWayne Grogan (4.3ppg) and Cody Muncy battle on the boards. “Our approach is to out work everyone we play,” said head coach Trey Booth. “Tyler is an explosive scorer while Bryce is my coach on the floor. With the development of our younger players and aggressive defense, we’ll be a solid team.”
