El Reno Indians Boys Replacing six seniors is a challenge for the Indians if they hope to make a fifth consecutive trip to the Class 5A state tournament. El Reno looks to build around lone returning starter Mike Jones. The junior forward scored 7.2 points a game a year ago but will be asked to do more this season. Juniors Justin Brolin, senior Bailey Denny and sophomore Justin Harris will also have increased roles on the team this season. Navigating through the Suburban Conference should prepare the Indians for the playoffs. “We will be replacing four starters and six seniors,” ninthyear head coach Rodney Hayden says. “But we have some good quality young kids and hope to
build on four straight trips to the state tournament. Actual playing time together should be the top priority early in the season for us to finish strong.” Girls First-year coach Renie Whittern inherits a squad that won 10 games a year ago, four more than the previous year. With the rebuilding effort already underway, this year’s success will be determined by how quickly the team adjusts to a new coach and system. Seniors Miranda Marquez and Jentri Thompson will be tasked with scoring duties as well as leadership this season. Sophomores Lexus Halfred, Sydney Gray, Sheridan Gray and Regan Owen will have to grow up fast if the Lady Indians are to improve on last year’s 10-win season. “We have a good mix of experience and inexperience with the senior and sophomore classes,” Whittern says. “We play in a very tough conference with powerhouse 5A teams Shawnee, Carl Albert and Deer Creek. Our success will depend on how the underclassmen step up to the varsity level of competition.”
