When people say cheese, they say Gouda!

Gouda is intrinsically linked to cheese, syrup waffles, clay pipes, candles, Gouda pottery and beer. In the centre of town you will find a wide variety of shops and museums where you can admire or taste these historic crafts. And take our word for it, it is something you do not want to miss!

Gouda Cheese

Gouda cheese is among the best-known, widely consumed cheeses in the world. The history of this famous cheese, which dates back to the 14th century, is still made in the traditional manner on cheese farms in villages near Gouda, such as Stolwijk, Haastrecht and Reeuwijk. Here you can still find the taste of the Low Countries: cheese in its purest form. Grass, cows, milk: real cheese. Discover, experience and taste. 6 GOUDA CHEESE

Market

Gouda, a Thursday morning somewhere between April and September. It is not long before you hear the clapping of hands of the cheese traders and farmers. And here they are: the well-known Gouda cheese girls surrounded by spectators. Horse-drawn cheese carts are coming and going. They come to a halt just in front of De Goudse Waag. Cheese boys jump off and start throwing over the cheeses, unloading the carts. The cheeses are then weighed on the original scales in De Goudse Waag.

There is also plenty to do in Gouda in the afternoons. For example, you can go on a boat trip through the canals or join the Goudse Gidsen Gilde for a walking tour. At Berg’s Bakery you can take part in a syrup waffle baking workshop. Or do the Beer-Wine-Cheese battle at Museum Harbour café IJsselhuis Gouda and discover which combination tastes best.

The Gouda Cheese Market is a spectacular historic and nostalgic scene. If you would like to visit the cheese market, make sure you are on time. The traditional cheese market takes place every Thursday morning from 10.00 to 12.30 hrs during the period from 6 April - 31 August (except on Kings Day, 27 April and Ascension Day, 18 May).
