VVOB – education for development

s e c n e t e p m Our core co Technical assistance We provide technical assistance to our partners in the education sector. Medium and longer term assistance is given by our teams, consisting of local and expatriate experts. These education and development experts are professionally experienced and socially committed specialists who engage mainly in training, coaching, facilitating and planning tasks. The teams are supported by partnerships with local and Flemish institutions offering short-term expertise in the field of education and development.

Capacity building We focus on institutional capacity building of our strategic and operational partners. It strengthens their ability to use resources effectively and efficiently in order to achieve their goals. Our actions are aligned with the policy plans and the needs of the direct and indirect target groups in our partner countries. We increasingly focus on initiating, guiding and facilitating processes of change and institutional strengthening, based on ownership and partnership.

Bridging between macro, meso and micro level We refer to ‘macro’, ‘meso’ and ‘micro’ as the levels of policy and institutions that govern and influence the quality of education. Since our organisation’s size and mandate allow for collaboration both with governmental and non-governmental institutions, our interventions mainly focus on the meso level (sub-sector level partnerships, such as with teacher trainer institutions, and/or focus on the provincial level, etc.). From this position we are able to reconcile the macro level policies with the needs and circumstances at the micro level, where implementation takes place. The alignment with local policies and the harmonisation with other donors through partnerships, safeguards the relevance of our interventions.

Curriculum development

In DR Congo, VVOB has supported DIPROMAD (Direction des programmes et matĂŠriel didactique) with revising the curriculum of the technical agricultural training at higher secondary school level. The reviewed curriculum has been approved by the Ministry of Primary, Secondary and Professional Education and is being implemented since September 2010.

Didactics (teaching and learning methodology)

C

In partnership with the Cambodian Ministry of Education, VVOB developed a teacher training manual on the integration of Learner Centred Methodology (LCM) for preservice teacher training. In 2008, nationwide, trainings for lecturers at all 18 Provincial Teacher Training Institutes and teachers of the pilot schools were jointly organised. A follow up took place in 2009. In addition, a school management manual on LCM for directors was developed and training was conducted, whilst cross-curricular and lifeskills related themes were successfully integrated.

ICT and media

Since 2008, the Kenya Ministry of Education (MoE) and VVOB collaborate in implementing the Kenya Education Sector Support Programme, and the National ICT Strategy for Education and Training. The adopted strategy is focusing on capacity development and supportive infrastructure, leading to, among others: zz a significant and structural shift in ICT capacities of MoE’s senior and middle level managers; zz more coherence and coordination of the ministry’s policies and plans; zz and the start of integration of ICT in the nationwide in-service programme for teachers in Mathematics and Sciences.
