About Show Me Your Number (SMYN) and the Team From humble beginnings gigantic strides will be made! FOREWORD from the CHAIRPERSON

I would like to say compliments of the new season and all the best for 2013. It is also my gratitude to be elected as a Chairperson of SMYN and I believe that the support of the board and all the staff will make my contribution to the success of the organization easier. I am looking forward, as we deliver on our mandate, to travelling the journey with all of you. Teamwork, collaboration and innovation are central to any organization’s success. Therefore, we should continue to embrace the values of accountability, integrity, respect for one another, transparency in our actions and putting our client at the centre of our engagements, if we intend to make significant progress in our work. As we are all aware that “business performance is a function of client engagement which is primarily driven by the employee engagements”. Hence, we shall continue to make sure that all our partners, clients’ and employees’ needs are well taken care for the sustainability of the organization. The previous year has come with its successes and also challenges. We have managed to participate successfully during the World AIDS Day, 1st December 2012, and thank you to the whole team for their participation. We were also, most recently, engaged with the AFCON in partnership with UNAIDS and the campaign has shown tremendous success with the issuing of the public announcement during the AFCON 2013 tournament. This shows that we can gain mileage in the work we do and leverage from our partners in making sure our work becomes a success. Hard work from the whole team once again proved tremendous in putting together a successful weeklong dual campaign “A Re Dlale Safe for Zero New HIV and TB Infections and Play for the Union”, in partnership with the State Of The Union (SOTU) secretariat. We have also had instances where some members of our staff, left the organization. We wish them success in their new endeavors and hopefully they have gained a lot through the interaction and engagements they had through SMYN. They will always remain ambassadors of SMYN wherever they are and in turn we will hold them in high esteem.

Sydney “Metro” Hadebe I am honoured and privileged to be part of the Show Me Your Number organization and campaign and also appreciate to be part of the 2nd Edition of the VULA VALA publication, especially during the hosting of the prestigious event in the county, the Orange AFCON 2013. South Africa as ever, is proud to host this tournament for a second time since the first in 1996.

In conclusion, we must acknowledge that as a growing and developing organization, we still have a lot work to do in strengthening our governance, administration and effective and efficient running of the organization. We can only succeed if all of us can continue to positively contribute to the social good and facilitate and engage various partners to be part of the engagement. This will strengthen our role as the conduit to communities and will enable us to succeed on our mandate and strategic objectives.

I would like to extend my gratitude to all SMYN Board members, Managing Director, Mabalane Mfundisi, and all the staff members. The SMYN team and all the stakeholders involved have continued to demonstrate hard-work, dedication and continuous commitment in the implementation of our programmes. We really value your effort, time, energy in making a significant contribution in fighting the struggle of HIV and AIDS in our different communities working with our different strategic partners.

Welcome message from the Executive Director

I would also like to welcome on board the management team of Show Me Your Number the following people who will serve in different roles: Steve Sekano, Bruce Ramokadi, Phumzile Mngenge, Lebo Madisha and Themba Ndlovu – guys welcome aboard to this train of Lerato Phetoane, Fikile Sithole, Sibongile Khumalo, Tshepiso Masenamela, Raymond Mosuwe (resigned in January 2013) and Nonhlahla Sechele. Show Me Your Number equally has a Board of Directors that is equal to the task and eager to propel us to greater heights. As we promenade forward, as we navigate our way through the mazes that we will encounter in our journey, as we all contribute to the success of Show Me Your Number, the following strategies below should occupy us collectively as we take this organization to greater heights in terms of occupying the centre stage in terms of the attainment of the National Strategic Plan on HIV, TB and STI’s 2012 – 2016. This is even more important because I have been elected to chair the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) Sport & Entertainment Sector of which Show Me Your Number acts as its Secretariat. The strategies for growth that will see us achieving greater heights are: Exhibition of a strong business and financial acumen: We need to be run with a bottom-line mentality supporting the mission of the organization by creatively partnering with business sector to support our work.

Mabalane George Mfundisi The year 2012 has been a rewarding and yet challenging for Show Me Your Number. We survived the storms and we shone in our moments of triumph. The team spirit was the glue that held us together, and propelled us to greater heights, aptly demonstrating the notion that “I am because you are”. In February 2012, we lost one of our ambassadors and the then Public Relations Officer Thabang “Chillies” Lebese who succumbed to HIV related complications. Thabang’s family made a gallant step by publicly disclosing his cause of death, and in the process they joined government, civil society and business by helping break the stigma and silence associated with HIV. To Thabang’s mom and his family, we salute you and we know that “Chillies” is resting fully aware that his fight against HIV, his fears of being stigmatized, the words he spoke to the youth through his own voice and through various media platforms were not in vain.

Excelling at fundraising: We need skilled fundraisers to do much more than shake hands and work the phones. We need a proactive, strategic approach to generating revenue that will support and sustain the organization over the long-term. Communicate effectively: Our board members, managers, volunteers, ambassadors as leaders in their own right should reach out to constituents by traditional means but also through more modern social media and networking opportunities. Communication is an everyday responsibility that must be carried out on multiple levels. Visionaries: In order for the organization to survive and thrive for decades to come, we need, today, people who see themselves as leaders that must think far into the future while never wavering from the core mission of the organisation.

One day I will be gone from Show Me Your Number, but when that times comes, with the above issues in place, I am sure that those As the founder of Show Me Your Number, together with the South whom I will leave behind will be empowered enough to take the vision African Football Players Union (SAFPU) that provided the platform and to the next level. endorsement for this gallant movement, we are proud that every year great strides are made to realize the vision that motivated us to start Show Me Your Number started out as a whisper, then the whisper was this not-for-profit entity. amplified and today we soar above the skies like an eagle. We have not yet conquered, but we continue to grow. The burden that rests on one’s shoulder is heavy and immense, but equally enticing enough to spur one to move forward. I work with a great team of dedicated volunteers, and without them the strides made could never ever been achieved.

Mabalane George Mfundisi

I want to single out a friend, a fellow visionary and key member of Show Me Your Number who has since passed on, Glen Makhado, for the immense contribution he made to Show Me Your Number until his untimely death in March 2011. Your footprints in the life of this organization will forever remain a guiding light to the steps we take. This is selflessness personified.

In Africa, a continent of 54 countries and countless languages, one language is spoken by nearly all: “football”

The Grand Unity Match is part of the Play for the Union campaign, which is SOTU’s flagship campaign in Africa, geared to track the implementation of AU decisions, and to inform, empower, and mobilize citizens through a petition to hold their governments accountable on the promises they have made about human rights, HIV and TB prevention, democracy and food security, amongst others. So the match is not just another football game, but a game with a purpose of social change. WHY FOOTBALL? Football as a sport captures the attention and passion of a huge number of Africans. A major continental football event like the upcoming AFCON 2013 is a natural mobilizer that aggregates and concentrates the attention of the African people, including their leaders, and as such acts as a strategic opportunity to focus the mind of people on pertinent continental issues such as the state of ratification and implementation of continental protocols with the greatest potential to change the lives of the African people. When ordinary citizens see the value and relevance of these protocols to their lives (as represented by the ambassadors) they would demand or support the demand for African governments to ratify and implement the same. Citizenry collective action produces more pressure for governments. If the collective action is at a continental platform, change on a continental level is likely to result. Football is one unifying factor that invites people to laugh together, cry together and celebrates together, therefore is the best platform for bringing people together for collective action. It is for this reason that the Grand Unity Soccer Match came to being.

The match was held at Meadowlands Stadium, Soweto, on the 9th February 2013, at 16h00 – 17h30. However, the build-up to the match started with a numerous engagements between the SOTU and SMYN SA Celebrity Team led by former Banyana Banyana Captain and SMYN management and coordinators based on mapping the week long of ambassador, Fikile “16V” Sithole in front, warming up for Grand Unity preparations towards a successful organizing and hosting of the match. Mboma, Olympic Champion and two-time African Champion was joined by 22 men and women from different parts of the continent as well as South African musicians, actors and media personalities to engage with football fans across the continent discussing some of the key issues African governments have committed to deliver and yet they still remain empty promises on paper. He was welcomed and received warmly and with excitement by over 50 fellow Cameroonian nationals when he paid a visit to a café and restaurant in Yeoville, Johannesburg, called Lé Cameroonian. The visit was a mere meet and greet for him to bring smiles to his fans and football lovers.
