ENGAGE INFORM ENTER'TRAIN'

Classroom Project, 2014 The project aimed at making railway stations engaging, informative and entertaining spaces through spatial interventions that enable the station visitors to indulge and enjoy their visit. I focused on the Kalupur Railway Station situated in Ahmedabad. The idea is that the visitors should not be left with nothing to do at the railway station, and instead even their time there can be made an experience in itself. It can help reduce their anxiety waiting for their trains, and it can also utilize the massive public spaces for interaction between different kinds of people.

4

INTERVENTION 1

Gujarat is popular for its wide variety of textiles and crafts. People visiting Ahmedabad, often go to markets like Law Garden to buy these textiles. An area in the station can be dedicated to these crafts. This can be inspired from the street markets. Various items can be sold as well as artists from across the state can come and demonstrate their crafts.

INTERVENTION 2

INFORMATION PANEL

SURFACE TO WRITE SPACE TO DROP THE LETTER IN

A TOUCHSCREEN WHICH ENABLES YOU TO CHOOSE THE POSTCARD THAT YOU WANT TO SEND

A GIANT POSTBOX which gives way to a series of equally large postcards. The postbox has a surface for writing letters. After writing, you can just drop them in and they will be delivered to your favorite people.

6

STEPS TO PRINT AND SEND POSTCARDS 1. TOUCH THE TOUCH SCREEN TO ACTIVATE IT 2. MULTIPLE OPTIONS FOR POSTCARDS ARE DISPLAYED WHICH CAN BE FLIPPED THROUGH. CHOOSE THE ONE YOU WANT TO PRINT. 3. CHOOSE THE NUMBER OF COPIES YOU WANT AND CLICK ON PRINT. 4. THE PRINTED POSTCARD COMES OUT. 5. WRITE WHAT YOU LIKE. 6. DROP THE CARD IN!!! The Giant Postbox gives way to a series of picture postcards which stretches across the entire platform. These postcards inform the traveller about different aspects of Ahmedabad like food, culture, textiles, architecture etc. These postcards work as individual entities which caters to the traveller on the go. They also lead one to the different installations working as a binding thread.

INTERVENTION 3 Often people feel unsure about drinking water from the water dispensers in the station due to hygiene issues. The idea is to make a water dispenser where the water pipe is translucent so that people can see the water they are drinking. This structure can be combined with an installation talking about the river Sabarmati. The city of Ahmedabad has grown on the banks of this river. This installation is such that when viewed from one side, it shows the old Ahmedabad and from the other, it shows the new Ahmedabad, thus showing the growth of the city. A WATER DISPERNSER WHICH ALLOWS YOU TO SEE THE WATER THAT YOU DRINK

A zigzag map structure comes over. on either sides of the zigzag, parts of old and new maps of Ahmedabad are shown. These images look chaotic from the centre but as you go to either the right side or the left, the image gets completed.

8

CHAOS: When viewed from the centre, its hard to figure out whats happening

THE OLD CITY When viewed from the right, one can see the map of the old times which shows the extent of Ahmedabad in the early times

THE NEW CITY When viewed from the left, the map of the modern city becomes visible, hence marking the growth of the city around Sabarmati.

INTERVENTION 4

Chabutro or Chabutaro or Chabutra is a structure mostly found in villages of Gujarat State of India. Chabutaro is specially constructed for use and breeding of Pigeons only in Gujarat.

THE CHHATRI + THE ENCLOSURE Feeding and resting for birds

THE CHHATRI The inside surface of the Chhatri can be used to display paintings and motifs from Ahmedabad

THE BASE For gathering of adults and children

Exploding the base of Chabutara to create a seating for people to sit facing each other. It can spark conversations, and it also reflects the culture of the city

THE STRUCTURE

10

An open space is created in the platform which connects the entrance hall to the platform number 1. This acts as interaction space between people. On one side there is a crafts shop and demonstration area. On the other, you have the Chabutara seating spaces.

After the project, I believe I got lucky as it was recognized by Ahmedabad Mirror and Radio Mirchi!

MODULAR DISPLAY SYSTEM Industry Project, 2014 Brief: To design and develop a modular and collapsible system to display and store a range of organic products. The system should be such that it can be easily transported to various parts of the country by tempos or travel buses. It should be ideally made using bamboo or a similar eco-friendly organic material. The system should not only fit in urban organic stores and retail stores such as Planet Health, but also at different Organic trade-fairs and Agricultural Seminars. The purpose of this system is to conveniently transport the products from place to place, and to give the brand a unique identity while reflecting the organic ethics of the company.

12

SOFT RECOMMENDATIONS

STRONG Each surface in the structure should be able to take at least 3Kgs of weight.

UNIQUE The structure should stand out

MODULAR To suit the space requirements at various venues.

STURDY While transportation, the structure should be able to take some impact.

SELF STANDING Anchor points or external support might not be available at some venues.

TRANSPORTABLE The structure will need to be moved to various cities and states.

The concept could involve taking inspiration from a tree. The trunk represents the elements of storage, the flowers blooming out represent the elements of display which bear the fruits in the form of organic products.

Folding in Bamboo is a challenging path to take as the kind of precision that folding requires is difficult to achieve in Bamboo. Triangular prism frames can be taken as the base. The triangular form provides stability to the structure. The form also allows the units of similar sizes to sit inside each other. The joint can be a simple tenon and mortise joint. The horizontal shelves can be either made out of bamboo slats or wood.

VENUE DESIGN : Prithvi Theatre, Mumbai Industry Project, 2014

CLIENT : Rage Productions BRIEF: To design the venue for a theatre festival, Writers Bloc. We had to read and analyze the 12 plays that were to be performed and come up with an installation for each of them. My group worked on three plays: Spunk, Satellite City and Natak Nako

Natak Nako is a play which is not a play. We used huge screaming mouths to depict the theme of people unloading their emotions on one another.

Satellite city is a play about a de-addiction group for television junkies. We made a two sided TV to show how lives are affected by the idiot box.

34

Spunk is a play that dealt with the theme of sperm donation, and explored the lives of various people getting messed up in a sticky situation.

TIC TAC TOE: An exploration in glass Classroom Project, 2013

In a group of three, we took glass as our main material and combined it with other materials like metal and plastic to create an installation with it. We finally made a large Tic Tac Toe game, which proved to be quite a success

BAMBOO CONCERTINA: A display system Classroom Project, 2013

In a group of twelve, we worked with Bamboo under the guidance of renowned bamboo designer, Sandeep Sangaru. The brief was to develop an exhibition structure, made of bamboo, using the properties of Bamboo as the main concepts. After many explorations, we finally decided on making a collapsible concertina structure which utilized properties like the light weight, and tensile strength of the material. The whole structure can be collapsed to a pole that a couple of people can carry, and expands to create an inner space and supports square and rhombus panels.
