hen Stefani Joanne Germanotta was a little girl, she would sing along on her mini plastic tape recorder to Michael Jackson and Cyndi Lauper, and get twirled in the air in daddy’s arms to the sounds of the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. She would dance around the table at fancy Upper West Side restaurants using the breadsticks as batons. And she would innocently greet a new babysitter in nothing but her birthday suit. It’s no wonder that the little girl from a good Italian New York family turned into the exhibitionist and multi-talented singersongwriter with a flair for theatrics that she is today: Lady GaGa. “I was always an entertainer,” says Lady GaGa, 22. “I was a ham as a little girl and I’m a ham today.” She first made a name for herself on the Lower East Side club scene with the infectious dance-pop party song Beautiful Dirty Rich, and her wild, theatrical,

and often tongue-in-cheek “shock art” performances. GaGa – who designs and makes many of her stage outfits – would strip down to her hand-crafted hot pants and bikini top, light cans of hairspray on fire, and strike a pose as a disco ball lowered from the ceiling to the orchestral sounds of A Clockwork Orange. “I always loved rock and pop and theatre,” she says. “When I discovered Queen and David Bowie is when it really came together for me and I realised I could do all three.” GaGa took her name from Queen’s song Radio Gaga, and cites rock star girlfriends, Peggy Bundy and Donatella Versace as her fashion icons. “I look at those artists as icons in art. It’s not just about the music. It’s about the performance, the attitude, the look; it’s everything. And that is where I live as an artist and that is what I want to accomplish.” That goal might seem lofty, but consider the artist: GaGa is the girl who at age four learned piano by ear. By age 13, she had written her first piano ballad. At 14, she played open mike nights at clubs such as New York’s the Bitter End and was teased for her quirky, eccentric style by her Convent of the Sacred Heart School (the Manhattan private school Nicky

and Paris Hilton attended) classmates by day. At age 17, she became was one of 20 kids in the world to get early admission to Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. Signed by her 20th birthday and writing songs for other artists (such as the Pussycat Dolls) before her debut album was even released, Lady GaGa has earned the right to reach for the sky. “My goal as an artist is to funnel a pop record to a world in a very interesting way,” says GaGa, who wrote all of her lyrics, all of her melodies, and played most of the synth work on her album, The Fame (Streamline/ Interscope/KonLive). “I almost want to trick people into hanging with something that is really cool with a pop song. It’s almost like the spoonful of sugar and I’m the medicine.” On her album, it’s

as if GaGa took two parts dance-pop, one part electro-pop, and one part rock, with a splash of disco and burlesque, and generously poured it into the figurative martini glasses of the world in an effort to get everyone drunk with her fame. “The Fame is about how anyone can feel famous,” she explains. “Pop culture is art. It doesn’t make you cool to hate pop culture, so I embraced it and you hear it all over The Fame. But it’s a shareable fame. I want to invite you all to the party. I want people to feel a part of this lifestyle.” The CD’s opener and first single, Just Dance, gets the dance floor rocking with it’s “fun, L.A., celebratory vibe.” As for the equally catchy Boys Boys Boys, GaGa doesn’t mind wearing her influences on her sleeve. “I wanted to write the female version of Motley Crue’s Girls Girls Girls, but with my own twist. I wanted to write a pop song that rockers would like.” Beautiful Dirty Rich sums up her time of

self-discovery, living in the Lower East Side and dabbling in drugs and the party scene. “That time, and that song, was just me trying to figure things out,” says GaGa. “Once I grabbed the reigns of my artistry, I fell in love with that more than I did with the party life.” On first listen, Paparazzi might come off as a love song to cameras; and in all honesty, GaGa jokes “on one level it IS about wooing the paparazzi and wanting fame. But, it’s not to be taken completely seriously. It’s about everyone’s obsession with that idea. But, it’s also about wanting a guy to love you and the

struggle of whether you can have success or love or both.” GaGa also shows her passion for love songs on such softer tracks as the Queen-influenced Brown Eyes and the sweet kiss-off break-up song Eh Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say). “‘Brown Eyes is the most vulnerable song on the album,” she explains. “‘Eh Eh is my simple pop song about finding someone new and breaking up with the old boyfriend.” It’s been a while since a new pop artist has made her way in the music industry the oldfashioned/grass roots way by paying her dues with seedy club gigs and self-promotion. This is one rising pop star who hasn’t been plucked from a model casting call, born into a famous family, won a reality TV singing contest, or emerged from a teen cable TV sitcom. “I did this the way you are supposed to,” she says. “I played every club in New York City and I bombed in every club and then killed it in every club… and I found myself as an artist. I learned how to survive as an artist, get real, and how to fail and then figure out who I was as singer and performer. And I worked hard.” GaGa adds with a wink: “And, now, I’m just trying to change the world one sequin at a time…” • The Fame is out now on Interscope Records and is also available on iTunes pukka June/July 09 7

CHILDCARE GOES

GREEN Vanessa Warn and Tracey Brooks are working mums who have started a unique business for the north – an organic day nursery for children called Little Green Rascals. Tony Greenway met them to find out more

“If you ask most children where their veg comes from,” says Tracey Brooks, “they’ll say Tescos.” Well, Tracey and her business partner, Vanessa Warn, want to change all that. In June, they open Little Green Rascals, the north’s very first children’s organic day nursery in a renovated farmhouse in Elvington, near York. The building is owned by Tom Pearcy, creator of the famous York Maze;

10 June/July 09 pukka

and when Pukka drops by for a sneak peek, the workmen are still in and the paint pots are out. When this place is finished and open for business, however, it’s going to look fabulous. Vanessa and Tracey’s green, healthy message has appealed to many of the parents on their books. The babies in the care of Little Green Rascals will never eat from a jar or packet, as all baby food will be prepared freshly on-site each day. The children will learn how to prepare healthy meals through the nursery’s in-house organic cooking and gardening programme, promoting a healthy diet for life from an early age. Vanessa, a registered homeopath, had always wanted to open a children’s nursery, and particularly one which adheres to an organic policy of no additives and all-natural products. She was encouraged by her frustration at the lack of organic childcare facilities locally, and had what she calls “a lightbulb moment” when she saw the old farmhouse, and realised its potential. Tracey, meanwhile, is the owner of Tiddlywinks, a nursery in Osbaldwick, York, which has been running for five years and has been very successful. “I was looking for a new challenge,” says Tracey. “I know Vanessa because our children go to the same school; and I know Tom and Lisa Pearcy because their children come to my nursery.” An organic nursery was a great idea – and a brilliant business fit. Here’s the thing, though: Vanessa and Tracey are both mums with three children. “We’re very busy people,” admits Tracey. “There’s an expectation now that women have to fit everything into their lives. Some women want to be stay-at-home mums, and that’s absolutely fine; and others, like me, want to do a bit of everything. It’s the haveit-all syndrome.” So how do they do it? How do they physically find enough hours in their day to look after their families and run a business which, already, is attracting a huge amount of interest? Tracey laughs. “We run around,” she says. “I don’t rest! What’s more, my husband has a busy job, too. Luckily we have a passion for what we do and very good parents who are there to help us out.” Vanessa’s homeopathy training lasted four years, and was done

mainly at the weekends, when her husband could look after the childcare. Since March, however, she’s had to juggle childcare, cook, look after the house and still be there to read stories and help with homework. “It’s incredibly difficult,” says Vanessa. “And you have to deal with a lot of guilt, too. Part of the reason why I wanted to start Little Green Rascals is to negate some of that guilt. Parents can leave their children with an absolutely clear conscious, and know they have access to an outdoor space, will eat the best foods and learn about nature. I think doing it all can be incredibly difficult for some women – and I don’t know how they manage. Expectations have changed. People want to do it all. But we rise to the challenge.” The organic ethos of Little Green Rascals is carried into the fabric of the building itself: the paint, the flooring, even the nappies… wherever possible, everything has been created with one eye on the environment. There are chickens outside and polytunnels, a wormery, a compost area, plus raised beds for children to dig and plant and grow their own. Amazingly, there are only two organic nurseries in the UK – and they are both in the south. So this is a first for the north. “’Organic’ can be a lifestyle change for some and a lifestyle supplement for others,” says Tracey. “But we’re not evangelical about it and we’re not going to start preaching. We won’t ask our parents and children: ‘Do you eat organic at home?’ I mean, it’s great if you do, because we’re passionate about it – but it’s not about that. Some parents will like that side of things; others are coming here for the huge outside area and the rural space.” Tracey points out of the window at a sweeping view across the York countryside. “Look at that,” she says. “That’s beautiful, isn’t it? So it’s not just the green and organic side of what we do. It’s about being back to nature, too.”

NEW BUSINESSES

“We’re always being asked to do strange things here,” admits Rosie Ellis, cheerfully. “Once, we had to make 1000 giant foam raspberries for a client. We made some giant banana costumes; and we also created three electric chairs for a stunt at a banking conference. And we NEARLY made the world’s largest cheeseboard, complete with two-anda-half tonnes of cheese, for an event in Covent Garden... although in the end that one wasn’t viable.” Whoa, whoa, whoa. Just rewind a bit. The banana costumes and the raspberries we can accept... sort of. And the cheeseboard thing. But three electric chairs? For a stunt at a banking conference? “Yes,” says Rosie. “The guy who was leading it was going to pretend to electrocute members of the audience.” Well, it takes all sorts. And Rosie and her business partner, Matt East, have met most of them. As the co-founders and directors of Event Prop Hire, a York-based propmaking company, they get asked to make anything and everything, out

of wood, foam, rubber, Polystyrene and other materials. Need a giant battering ram, for some reason? No problem. A lifesize octopus? Can do. Giant HOLLYWOOD letters? Yes, leave it with them. “People ring up with really serious voices and tell you the most ridiculous things they want or need,” says Rosie. “So it’s funny when new people start working here and answer the phone.” They can’t believe their ears. Matt and Rosie have only been in business since 2003 – they’re a young company in more ways than one - but Event Prop Hire has grown massively in that time. Over the years they’ve provided bespoke props for film, theatre and TV productions (for the likes of EastEnders, Casualty, Hollyoaks and MTV’s Sweet 16 series, to name a few), but Matt and Rosie now mostly concentrate on making and hiring out sets for big corporate events. Their clients include ITV, BBC, Channel 4, BMW, Walt Disney, Tesco, Asda, Topshop and Harvey Nichols. Over the last two years, Event Prop Hire has taken on many more

staff – so now there’s 16 altogether. “We’ve been working on more events this year,” says Rosie, “although we have noticed budgets have been cut.” But, still, for a recession, business is booming. “It surprises me that we’ve grown so quickly,” says Rosie. “But then everyone here has worked really hard. I think the thing that’s made a difference is the quality of the products we make, and how we’ve marketed ourselves with our presence on the internet. And the aspect that’s really taken off in the last six months is the props we provide for magazine photo-shoots. For example, Girls Aloud posed with our props in the show programme for their latest tour. Each girl was pictured with a giant Martini glass, a giant shoe, a giant champagne bottle…” Also, talking of big names, the company recently provided a sedan chair to transport Hollywood movie star Jack Black to the premiere of his latest film, Kung Fu Panda. In their workshop at Sutton-onthe-Forest, Matt and Rosie have all kinds of props: vast cut-outs of various action heroes, including Superman, Batman and Wonder

their products to a farmers’ market in York; but soon they were travelling to garden fairs up and down the country. But it was hard work. They were on the go seven days a week, not getting much sleep and not receiving much money. “Occasionally we’d get a small scenic job,” says Rosie. “We made a prop for BBC’s Byker Grove, one for Blackpool Pleasure Beach and another for ITV’s Distant Shores (the drama starring Peter Davison). It was about then that I thought of making foam bricks and that saved us, really.” The foam bricks have been a huge seller for Matt and Rosie. Marketing companies love them, for example, and use them in their press material – and they’re still going strong: the Radio Times recently used a pile of bricks for a photo shoot with violinist, Nigel Kennedy. Then, in 2005, when Rosie created the company website, the jobs started flowing in. No wonder they have won various business awards, including the Shell Livewire Young Entrepreneur of the Year for Yorkshire and

Humberside, 2004. Matt and Rosie love their work: it’s what they’ve always wanted to do. “I’ve always been into building things,” says Matt. “Whether it was Lego or Meccano.” When they first started out, it took Matt, Rosie and their team ages to make props. “But now we’ve been here for so long and everyone is on the same wavelength and just gets on with it,” says Rosie. “The volume of props we make on a weekly basis is really high.” The American phone both, for example, took a couple of days. But no-one said it would be easy. Event Prop Hire is constantly busy because deadlines are always looming. In fact, most of the projects that the company takes on have a week or two’s turnaround at the most. “We know that we CAN’T miss a deadline,” says Matt. “It’s not like being a builder or a plumber where, if a job runs late, then what’s the worst that can happen? In this business, you have an event that you are an important part of. “Still, it is very enjoyable. It can be tough both mentally and physically, yet I’d much rather be doing this than working in an office. I can’t ever imagine myself doing that.” • www.eventprophire.com 0845 0940 816

Although, last week, my favourite was the giant Tequila bottle with the worm coming out of it. and the giant flowers we made which you could put your head through, like something out of Alice in Wonderland. They’re a bit trippy.” Rosie and Matt met while working on the same Entertainment Design Craft degree course at Teeside University. “After graduation, I made the costumes and Matt made the sets for Terry Deary’s pantomime in Barrow-in-Furness,” says Rosie. “When that was a success, we thought it would be good to join forces and set up a business... so we started out in 2003 making bird tables and garden ornaments called Funki-Fungi.” Initially the pair set up their workshop in a garage and took

So when Michelle needed some chill-out time, we packed her off to The Spa Lounge in – where else? – Boston Spa. This turned out to be Yorkshire’s newest and most luxurious day spa and medi centre, which offers a range of treatments including waxing, spray tanning, and facials; but also holistic therapies and something called Crystal Clear Microdermabrasion. It was hard to get Michelle out of the place and back to work, frankly. “It was wonderful,” she says. “The therapist gave me a full consultation first and a massage. Then I had a deep skin cleanse and exfoliation, which was fabulous; followed by a peel-off facemask, which made my skin feel

wonderfully smooth. I ended up stroking my face the whole afternoon. I couldn’t believe it!” Immediate results, then, are common – but to get the full effect, The Spa Lounge recommends eight Microdermabrasion treatments. While the facemask was setting, the therapist gave Michelle a neck and uppershoulder massage. Yet the whole process only took about 40/45 minutes – which means you can pop out in your lunch-hour and experience the same rejuvenating treatment. That should make your afternoon go with a swing, if nothing else. “I’d never had a facial before,” admits Michelle. “It was all new to me. And I didn’t realise I’d get a massage as part of the treatment, but I did and it was totally relaxing. The surroundings are comfortable and inviting and not clinical in any way. I’ll certainly be

doing it again…” And with body and detox therapy also on offer – not to mention facial aesthetics and skin rejuvenation - we don’t really blame her, either…

health & beauty Thankfully, Daniel Sandler, who has been one of Britain’s most highly-regarded (and fiercely sought-after) make-up artists for more than 20 years, is happy to spill the bronzing beans. ‘I have two words to say to women about make-up: colour and blending,’ he explains. ‘Trends are all very well, but you have to choose colours that are going to work with you, not against you. And when you get the right colour, you need to know how to blend it. ‘If people learn nothing more from me than how to successfully apply the right amount of the right colour and blend it beautifully, then that’s a job well done.’ Yorkshire women are being given the chance to learn that and a whole lot more from Daniel at a series of day-long make-up sessions at ghd’s style academy in Leeds. ‘I show them how to apply three colours on

In other words, it’s all you ever wanted to know about make-up but were afraid to ask. And who better to interrogate on the intricacies of blusher application and the pros and cons of brushes over sponges than a man at the very pinnacle of his profession. Daniel is the first to admit, however, that he

started with something of an advantage as the son of a celebrated London hairdresser who counted Vidal Sassoon, Trevor Sorbie and Mary Quant among his friends. ‘Yes, there was a bit of nepotism involved to start with,’ he says. ‘My dad definitely opened a lot of doors for me. But once you’re through those doors you have to stand on your own two feet and prove your worth.’ Daniel enrolled on a make-up course at London College of Fashion during the New Romantic Eighties, when Steve Strange and Grace Jones were showing what could be achieved with a bit of cosmetic know-how. He worked with hairdresser Nicky Clarke on his shoots and shows while still a student and even had a hand in John Galliano’s first collection on leaving St Martin’s. For a while, he enjoyed a dual career as a model and make-up artist in Paris and New York, adding a new flavour to the often homogenous model mix with his red hair and freckles. But on his return home to England he decided to concentrate on making others look fabulous for their close-ups and retreated back behind the lens.

It is a decision he has never regretted. He now works with celebrities on both sides of the Atlantic and has launched his own must-have cosmetics brand. But that doesn’t mean he believes we should be a slave to designer labels. ‘Great make-up is not necessarily about designer brands and high prices,’ he says. ‘High street brands like Bourjois are great too. I always advise people to spend more on products they use every day. That means great brushes, foundation, blusher and mascara. ‘But if you want to try out an electric blue eye colour that you know you’ll probably only wear once, go for something cheap and cheerful. And never, ever spend £25 on nail polish. If you can get it for £1.50, what’s the point?’ The key to Daniel’s success, whether he’s teaching Yorkshire women how to blend their blusher or keeping Martine McCutcheon’s pout in perfect shape, is that he advises and suggests rather than directs and demands. ‘I never dictate to my clients and I would never march in and say “right, this is what I’m doing today – like it or lump it”,’ he says. ‘It’s very much a collaboration.’ Daniel’s next celebrity collaboration, just days after our interview, is with Davina McCall, who has asked him to do her make-up for a cover shot for Fabulous magazine to launch the 10th anniversary of Big Brother. He’s obviously looking forward to getting to grips with her famous grin again. ‘She’s a very down-to-earth girl and we work together very well,’ he says. ‘You can actually have a conversation with her. Some celebrities just want you to nod silently and agree with their every word. She’s not like that at all.’ Daniel has worked with the Spice Girls, Atomic Kitten, Hear’say and Liberty X and admits that all-girl bands can be a little – ahem – demanding. ‘I think maybe it’s more to do with

Daniel is in Yorkshire teaching students make-up basics, stunning day to night looks, and haute couture trends at ghd’s groundbreaking style academy at Bridgewater Place, Leeds. The three sessions, aimed at both beauticians and enthusiastic amateurs, offer great advice on everything from achieving that enviable ‘celebrity glow’ to reproducing catwalk trends. ‘It’s totally brilliant,’ said beautician Lisa Harris, who Pukka sent along to brush up on her make-up skills. ‘Daniel presents things in a really interesting way and he’s so funny that you soon forget your nerves. ‘I found the course really helpful for work, and it’s also boosted my confidence when it comes to putting my own make-up on. ‘If you can go along for one day, that’s great, but I’d strongly advise attending at least two of the three sessions. You really get to build up your skills and you get to spend even more time in the ghd academy – honestly, it really has an amazing wow factor.’ Stage 1 – Make-up: the basics – runs from 10am to 6pm on Monday July 20th and Monday October 19th; stage 2 – Simply stunning make-up – runs from 10am to 6pm on Tuesday July 21st and Tuesday October 20th; and stage 3 – The fashionista – runs from 10am to 6pm on Wednesday July 22nd and Wednesday October 21st. Each session costs £175, but pupils signing up for the first two sessions will receive Daniel Sandler professional make-up brushes worth £195. the dynamic of the band rather than the individuals,’ he explains, diplomatically. ‘All I know is that Hear’say and Liberty X were always much easier to handle.’ Daniel has travelled the world with his clients, but when asked to plump for his all-time favourite celebrity collaborator, he leaves Paris and New York far behind and heads back to Yorkshire again. ‘Nell McAndrew,’ he says, without having

to pause for thought before citing Leeds’ favourite model citizen. ‘She’s an incredibly caring and thoughtful person, and you never get the big “I am” with her. ‘She’s always friendly and appreciative. And she’s a mother to everyone. If she knows I’ve skipped breakfast she’ll even let me share her banana.’ And there really is no greater compliment than that. pukka June/July 09 17

J

ade Goody’s untimely cruel death to cervical cancer shocked and saddened people around the world; thoughts lay with the terminally ill celebrity and how fate had dealt a tragic hand parting Jade from her beloved sons, Bobby and Freddy and short-living her fairytale wedding to Jack Tweed. Unbeknown to Jade, by remaining in the spotlight, openly talking about the disease and tirelessly working to raise funds for her boys futures – the kind-hearted mother and wife has left a legacy that will save thousands of lives. The Jade effect has brought the subject of cancer into our lives, and has made us all more aware of the importance of smear testing and how vital regular checks are. The high-profile spotlight the 27-year-old star from Bermondsey has placed on the disease, has led to calls for the cervical cancer screening age to be lowered. Cervical screening saves over 4,500 lives every year. Early detection and treatment can prevent around 75% of cervical cancers developing in women, and vitally can save lives. More women are seeking smears since Jade’s ordeal and public backing for the lowering is so strong, the Government are to review the age at which women in England are screened for cervical cancer. An expert panel will report later this year on whether women aged 20-24 should be offered smear tests, as they are in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. In the UK, under-25s have been excluded from such checks in England since 2003 because of relatively few cancers being detected and it was felt it did more harm than good in younger women. Sara Hiom, Cancer Research UK’s Director of Health Information, said: “Media coverage of Jade Goody’s tragic plight has brought important cervical cancer awareness messages into living rooms across the UK. The cervical cancer pages viewed on CancerHelp UK (www. cancerhelp.org.uk), Cancer Research UK’s

information website, leapt from around 108,000 in January to almost 390,000 in February as details of Jade’s terminal prognosis began to emerge – an increase of 258%.” Sara added: “Jade’s story has raised awareness of cervical cancer which has led to hundreds of thousands of people contacting Cancer Research UK for information on the disease as the number of hits to our website shows. Jade’s legacy will be to help save lives.” Cervical cancer screening teams across the UK reported a rise in the number of women attending their appointments for smear tests. Previously, prior to the Jade effect, the number of young women attending screenings had been falling all across the country. Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women under 35 but the vast majority of cases still occur in women who are older. Around 24,000 women get smear test results each year showing severely abnormal changes to the cells of their cervix, indicating the possibility of cancer unless treatment is given. The NHS argues that abnormalities in the cervix are very common in the under 25 age group and are mostly natural, harmless and cause no symptoms. However, calls for the smearing age to be lowered to 20 continue to grow louder and louder, with young patients wanting the right to have a smear test in line with European countries including Germany and Greece.

Cervical screening saves over 4,500 lives every year

Signs of cervical cancer can be picked up through smear tests, or women may experience symptoms such as bleeding between periods, after or during sex, or pain and discomfort after or during sex. There are other risk factors for cervical cancer including smoking and having unprotected sex at an earlier age which can increase the risk of developing cervical abnormalities. The chances of survival are very good if the disease is caught early. Tragically, in Jade’s case, the disease was diagnosed at a later more advanced stage. Just nine short months ago, Jade was delivered the devastating news of her cancer battle while in the Indian Big Brother House and immediately returned to the UK for treatment and further tests. After diagnosing the cancer had spread into her bloodstream, the young celebrity was forced to have a hysterectomy. Gruelling months of chemotherapy and radiotherapy followed, in the slim hope the cancer Jade had no control over would be eradicated. Unfortunately, the disease had spread throughout the star’s body and it was staggeringly declared as terminal. Jade was told she had only months to live. Jade, prior to her terminal diagnosis, admitted from the age of 16, before being sexually-active she had pre-cancerous cells removed. Her four smear test results from 16 onwards each showed pre-cancerous cells and she regularly suffered excruciating abdominal pain and blood loss. Each time Jade was treated and hopeful she finally had the all-clear, her aggressive strain of cancer kept returning. Her collapse last August and subsequent hospital tests, eventually led to the diagnosis she was most terrified of. Jade’s hope was that her plight will encourage women to be vigilant about the signs such as abnormal bleeding and pain and never ignore requests for routine smear tests. Jade’s legacy will be saving the lives of millions with her frank, honest approach in life and death.

Dr Andrea Ubhi, Dentist of the Year 2005 (The Probe Awards), works from her exclusive clinic in York providing smile makeovers. ‘I see a wide range of cases at the practice, from people wanting small changes made to their teeth to the correction of very crooked smiles,’ says Dr Ubhi. ‘More and more people in the public eye are having veneers and crowns to improve the look of their teeth and patients are wanting the same look.’ ‘We offer Californian porcelain laminate veneers, NoPreparation Veneers, DaVinci veneers, smile makeovers and tooth whitening. Currently the most requested treatment is the No-Preparation Veneers, which can alter the shape, colour and alignment of the teeth, without removing any tooth substance.’ ‘I am very pleased to be able to offer No-Preparation Veneers because it allows me to provide the look the patient wants without compromising the long-term health of the teeth.’ ‘I am a conservative dentist, preferring to retain as much of the natural tooth substance as possible, and the No-Preparation system, working alongside my ceramists in California, allows me to do this.’ To arrange an appointment please contact the practice on 01904 639667 or visit our website. www.andreaubhi.com

‘I can’t believe the difference it has made. I am so much more self-confident now, and I smile all the time. Friends say that it has made me look years younger and I have to agree! I can’t thank Dr Ubhi enough’ – Lisa

Dr Andrea Ubhi, 23 Stonegate, York YO1 8AW

Lisa attended the practice because she was embarrassed about her smile. She has slightly crooked, overlapping teeth. We discussed various treatment options, and Lisa decided to have 10 upper veneers placed, and tooth whitening on her remaining teeth. The end result was a straighter, whiter, more even smile.

ospitals can be intimidating places, admits Julie Wainwright. “But this one,” she says, “is light and airy… and it doesn’t feel clinical. Its atmosphere is entirely different.” The thousands of satisfied patients who have experienced the facilities at Clifton Park Treatment Centre would agree. The centre, on the A19 outside York City Centre, is purposebuilt for orthopaedic surgery; and, when it opened in January 2006, was immediately successful with those requiring a range of orthopaedic interventions. “We send questionnaires to all our patients,” says Julie, Clifton Park Treatment Centre’s Business Development Manager. “At our last quarterly report, 100 per cent of our patients marked their care as either ‘very good’ or ‘excellent.’” Which speaks for itself. With 24 beds, two operating theatres, a large out-patients department, on-site radiology and physiotherapy, a day case unit and 120 staff, the dedicated and expert team at Clifton Park Treatment Centre help patients who have problems with their hands, feet, shoulders, knees and hips. The centre has enhanced care facilities

for those requiring specialist nursing care. The outpatient facilities include five consulting/ examination rooms, facilities for undertaking diagnostic tests (including an innovative in-house laboratory service with the immediate provision of blood results), alongside X-ray and ultra-sound investigations, and pre-operative assessment. “We undertake private self-pay and insured work for patients aged 18 and upwards,” says Julie. “Younger patients come to us with sports injuries, incurred through racket sports, football or rugby; and we see older patients requiring knee replacements and hip replacements, etc.” At an initial consultation, patients can discuss their lifestyle, expectations and treatment needs with a registered orthopaedic consultant. Private patients requiring surgery will be given full details of costs and what the price includes. “After an outpatient appointment at Clifton Park Treatment Centre, you are under absolutely no obligation to have any surgery with us,”

explains Julie. “It is simply a chance to come and be assessed by an orthopaedic consultant. In fact, you may discover you don’t need surgery at all; you may need physiotherapy instead, specific to the type of problem you have. We can also carry out injections for painrelief. After a few sessions, if you are still experiencing difficulties, we can look at other treatments to help with your condition.” Patients can also choose the consultant they wish to see. “This is particularly good,” says Julie, “if a patient has had surgery with us before or has been recommended a consultant by their GP.” Plus, in terms of cutting-edge technology, Clifton Park Treatment Centre leads the field with such innovations as computer-assisted surgery, and a physiotherapy department with a well-equipped modern gymnasium, providing for both in and out patients services. Free car parking is also available, as is a staff restaurant which is open to all patients and their visitors.

BOUDOIR JOUY EDITION

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF VIVIENNE WESTWOOD BOUDOIR BOUDOIR: A small elegantly furnished room, where a lady may retire to be alone or to receive her intimate friends [a. F. boudoir, lit. ‘a place to sulk in’, f. bouder to pout, sulk].

OUDOIR: The seductive signature fragrance of Vivienne Westwood, encapsulating the designer’s personal vision of femininity, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Inspired by a fantasy of Madame de Pompadour, the fascinating favourite of Louis XV, Vivienne Westwood has chosen to mark the occasion by presenting a sumptuous limited edition: BOUDOIR JOUY EDITION. The designer imagined the Pompadour – a woman who captivated the notoriously dissolute French king with her beauty, taste and charm – reading poetry in her boudoir, its walls hung with toile de Jouy. This lovely fabric, so named because it was first produced in the workshops of Jouyen-Josas near Paris, has long been a source of inspiration for Vivienne Westwood, for whom the scènes galantes it frequently depicts are the quintessence of the 18th century spirit – risqué, refined and exquisitely sophisticated. For BOUDOIR JOUY EDITION, one such titillating scene, in which a suggestively undressed woman is pursued by an eager suitor, is printed on the precious flacon with its emblematic orb-shaped stopper. Other scenes are embossed in rich burgundy on the delicate magnolia pink box. Inside, the fragrance is as subtle and sensual as the original Boudoir, but with a fresher signature, top notes of Red berries and Mandarin Zest, mingled with the lush green scent of Bamboo Sap. In the heart, the smooth, powdery notes of Orris are freshened by Red Peony and Jasmine Petals, evoking the texture and colours of toile de Jouy. The dry-down blends crystalline white amber with mellow cashmere wood, its refined sensuality suggesting the intimate ambiance of an 18th century boudoir.

This doesn’t have to mean a drastic restyle, but you do need a little more than a cheeky trim to get rid of straggly, over-processed ends. Next you need to sort out your colour. aplenty in those six little letters. Actually, if the truth be told it’s not the word that’s so petrifying, it’s the garment itself and the stomach-grinding angst it causes for women of every shape, size and age. But does it really have to be that way? Do we really have to tie ourselves up in anxious little knots every summer at the thought of parading poolside in what amounts to little more than a hankie on a piece of elastic? Or could a little pre-sun skin preparation give us a confidence boost as well as a beauty boost? The answer, thankfully, is yes. Forget location, location, location (although St Tropez is still preferable to Grimsby seafront) and think preparation, preparation, preparation instead. Before you even think about whether you’re going to opt for a bikini, tankini, monokini or an ankle-length swimsuit with long sleeves and a builtin balaclava, you have to get your skin in tip-top condition. This means paying attention to every nook, cranny, corner and pointy bit of your body, including oft-forgotten areas like elbows, knees and heels, and giving every inch a primary exfoliation to get rid of unwanted dead skin and polish new skin up to a pleasantly healthy gleam. If your feet prove problematic (they usually do), soak them for 15 minutes in warm water, apply your favourite body lotion and wrap them in plastic wrap and warm towels for ten minutes or so. While we’re on the subject of problematic areas, let’s talk about shaving. It’s all very well to wander round looking like the missing link in the winter months – what hides beneath

HEALTH & BEAUTY

from the shower looking like you’ve been bathing with piranhas – and use an intensely moisturising shaving gel or cream (again, don’t borrow his, it will make you smell like a non-league footballer). When you’re buffed, scrubbed and shaved to perfection, you need to slather on handfuls of moisturiser. It’s a good idea to invest in a more expensive, intensive cream for a once-a-week treat, but feel free to opt for a cheap and cheerful body butter that smells good enough to eat for everyday use. You can even use a basic aqueous cream if money and your skin are a little tight; it works a treat and costs about £2 for a huge pot. Body oils can also be handy at this time of year as they add sheen as well as moisture. Some people find the idea of using oil on their skin a little scary, fearing their epidermis will erupt overnight so they look like they’ve smeared their body in pepperoni pizza. But this can be easily avoided if you use body oils sparingly when your skin is still damp after a shower. This ensures your skin remains soft as butter, but not as greasy. And if you do nothing else in the run-up to your jollies, drink plenty of water. It really does make all the difference when it comes to keeping your skin hydrated. Ideally you need to knock back about two litres of uncarbonated H2O a day. If you can cut back drastically on salt and sugar, and keep your intake of caffeine and alcohol to a minimum too, all the better. Your skin will really thank you – and you might just find yourself wearing your string bikini to the beach with a bit more body confidence. You never know, you might even get off your sun-lounger this year.

RODIAL BODY SCULPTURE, £95 This is a brand that manages to successfully bring together science and beauty in one tube of silhouette enhancer. It claims that cellulite will be diminished, skin tone improved and thigh circumference reduced by up to a centimetre in just 30 days. How (you may well ask)? Apparently, bio-marine actives, wheat protein and caffeine work together to break down fat cells, smooth out cellulite and firm skin, leading to a 15 per cent decrease in the orange peel appearance of cellulite and a 47 per cent improvement in the silhouette (no, we’re not sure what that means either).

To help put a spring in your summer step, this shimmering gel helps to firm and smooth your skin leaving your legs light, bright and softer than silk.

Toners can often leave your skin feeling tighter than a drum, but this product, which contains soothing Baltic chamomile and rose water, manages to deeply tone while easing and softening. It regulates the pH level of the skin making it better prepared and more efficient at absorbing moisturiser. It claims to leave your skin ‘like a blossom awakened by a dew drop’, and who are we to argue?

This multi-function gel calms and soothes fragile skin and is a complete lifesaver (or, at least, a skin-saver) when it comes to sunburn, itches and bites. It’s also a useful addition to your holiday suitcase essentials as it doubles as an intensive moisturizer and after-shave calm.

With its super-sweet mixture of tea tree, lavender and lemongrass oils, this intensive treatment salve is designed to help reduce rough, tough skin. It contains a rich blend of oils and waxes to keep feet soft and smooth all summer. It might look pretty in its dinky little tin, but this salve actually packs one heck of a punch.

LA PRAIRIE CELLULAR BUST & BODY COMPLEX, £98, AND CELLULAR BODY EMULSION, £66 It’s easy to forget the sensitive décolletage area in the winter months (if it’s permanently covered by a polo neck, who cares?), but there really is no excuse when summer rolls round again. This dynamic duo help to strengthen and smooth this typically tricky area, leaving you free to take the plunge in your most daring summer tops (how low will you go?).

In October 2007, Help for Heroes was launched by a group of friends. Their commitment and devotion to the cause, never ends. Doing excellent work for the soldiers, servicemen and women everywhere. Both directly and through other services, always showing that they care. These brave people may have been wounded or injured in some way. Help for Heroes is at hand to help them get by from day to day. Supporting the wounded from the current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq too. Without this immediate help, unfortunately some would not know what to do. Families of these wonderful people suffer so much. It’s great that there is somewhere where they can keep in touch. The funding benefits the Navy, Army and Royal air force. It helps their families and friends, through the tough times of course. Help for Heroes is mainly structured by caring volunteers. Although a few employees have been established over the years. The idea is simple; money received is used straight away. Going to places and people who need it most every day. Help for Heroes is not political and does not criticise anyone. It accepts wars happen under any government, and let’s just get the job done. Help these people who put their lives in danger again and again. Their bravery and courage should be respected and their dignity remain. Important events like tonight, bring together people from all walks of life. Royalty, celebrities and the next door neighbour and his wife. We are all joining together tonight with one worthy cause in mind. That’s to help those courageous servicemen and women not get left behind. This evening was for Help 4 Heroes held at Ramada Jarvis, Willerby, Hull on Saturday 4th April 2009.

So let’s open our wallets and our heart. Let’s get motivated and make a start. Our servicemen and women deserve our help today. They fight for our country and our freedom in some way. Lads and lasses as young as 17 will be starting their career. Not realising they could be facing horrific danger and fear. We salute them and wish them well as their duties they carry out. Dedication, commitment and loyalty, that’s what it’s all about.

Leconfield ladies club members either know of someone injured in the war. Or they themselves have been hurt by something they saw. All the wives and husbands have either suffered in some way. Through injuries of their own or know someone still suffering today. This year’s event is to raise money for Help for Heroes and that’s why we’re here tonight. Being a subject close to their hearts we can imagine their plight. So please give as much or as little as you dare. To show these wonderful people and their families, that yes, we do really care!! 32 June/July 09 pukka

iddlesbrough-based fashion designer Kate Fearnley has a talent for creating unique occasion wear - mixing vibrant colours with varied textures and fabrics - which has catapulted her into the wardrobes of celebrities including Katie Price, Girls Aloud, The Saturdays, Alexandra Burke, Sophie Ellis Bextor and stars from TV’s Dancing On Ice, Skins, Hollyoaks and Coronation Street. Though, for the down-to-earth Kate, styling the stars is all in a day’s work, writes Julie Penfold. As Kate’s stunning one-off party wear creations are so reasonably priced (dresses start at just £100 and made-to-measure at

INDEPENDENT WOMAN £200), you’re just as likely to see her taffeta prom dresses dazzling at a red carpet event or glamming up a photoshoot as adorning girls on a night out on the tiles. With all the media interest in the Kate Fearnley brand, celebrities are constantly spotted in her designs. Katie Price, for example, is known to wax lyrical about Kate’s collections - which is fantastic press for the unassuming designer. Kate said: “We worked with Katie on the OK! photoshoot where Katie and her little daughter, Princess, were wearing the same dress. The thing with Katie Price is, what you see is what you get. She could have hated or loved my work… and if she’d hated it, she would have said so! “It was nerve-wracking going to meet her because it was filmed for a TV programme; but she was really complimentary about the garments and said they were the best she has ever had, which was really nice to hear. I met Katie and her stylist last year and she really loved the clothes. We hired a hotel and took our new collection along – and she brought the TV cameras with her which was a bit

daunting as I’m very camera-shy. In the end, we had a really laidback chat and she tried on every single thing and took a lot of it with her – which is always a good sign! Our work with Katie is ongoing now; she rings and asks for dresses when she has a photoshoot.” Kate adds: “Sarah Harding was in OK! Magazine a couple of weeks ago and she was at a party wearing one of the classic dresses we have had in our collection for some time.” Earlier this year, Kate and her small team took the plunge and attended the prestigious fashion industry event, the Pure Trade Show in London. Her collection was so well received it led to an influx of orders. The brand is now expanding nationwide and further afield to Europe and Ireland. Kate said: “All the brands go to Pure to sell their season’s collections and take forward orders, and this year is the first time we went. With the press we’ve been getting, we thought now was the right time to appear. And we’re bogged down with orders so we’re really pleased – it’s great news for us. It was a real success, because this season we managed to attract more business from our central lines. We now have our range in Fenwick’s in Newcastle, and Selfridges in Manchester and Birmingham are onboard. That’s just to start with - and if the range is successful it will be introduced to the London flagship store.” Despite the trademark bright vibrant colours

fashion of her creations, Kate herself is unlikely to be seen in any of her statement wear. She admits: “I love working with bright colours which is really weird as I’m dressed head to toe in black most of the time - and I never wear dresses either! It’s nice for me to make designs that are a completely different market to what I would personally wear!” The new spring/summer 2009 collection sees the much-loved prom style dresses remaining a staple, alongside a bright, vivacious collection of contrasting colours

such as bright orange, melon and coral clashing with loud cerise pinks. Standing out from the crowd is the name of the fashion game whether you are a girl-next door or a celeb in the hot white heat of the public eye. A new addition to the Spring/Summer collection is the Jersey Diffusion Range, which offers bespoke fashion at a more modest, recession-friendly cost (£65-£85). Kate said: “We’ve introduced the Diffusion Range which is a lower price point, which seems to have worked really well. On the wholesale side, it

has never been better. Proms are a massive expense for parents and one they can do without. Diffusion just offers a cheaper version. Through the Jersey Diffusion Range we have casual, easy-to-wear clothes in really bright colours, fresh vibrant cool colours, all very summery and perfect for holidays. We have a little of everything in this collection really!” • Kate Fearnley Boutique, 224 Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough, TS1 3QW. FIT FOR PURPOSE Harrogate-based health and lifestyle coaches Matt and Rachel Hancocks have transformed an ordinary semi-detached into an open plan designer home. Tony Greenway gets a tour PICTURES BY JEREMY PHILLIPS

M

att and Rachel Hancocks look remarkably calm and collected for a couple who have completely renovated their house from top to bottom. Lesser people have been known to crumble at the mere thought of major DIY work. “It was a bit stressful at times,” admits Matt. “I’d be at work all day and then I’d come in and start working on the house at night.”

Matt and Rachel have their own health and lifestyle coaching business, Elev8, and specialise in personal fitness training, holistic classes, pilates and nutrition consultations from their Harrogate-based studio. This means Matt’s work is generally of a physical nature - but more heavy work awaited him when he walked through his front door every evening. From the outside, the couple’s Harrogate home seems like any other semi-detached property on their quiet suburban street. The

inside, however, is anything but ordinary. The Hancocks like open-plan living – so downstairs, where most people have individual rooms, they have one big space. This makes the house extra light and extra roomy. “We’ve worked on a couple of investment properties before and created similar layouts but on a smaller scale,” says Matt. “In one, we’d knocked through to make a kitchen diner and we’d also converted the loft - so we were no strangers to structural work. pukka June/July 09 39

INTERIORS From the outside, Matt and Rachel’s house is an ordinary semi-detached in a quiet Yorkshire suburb

The smoked oak laminate flooring is from Barker and Stonehouse (01642 230988).

“So when we first saw the inside of this place, we pretty much knew what we could and couldn’t do. The plan downstairs was to create an open-plan kitchen-diner, which meant knocking down a wall. And we knew we wanted to make the house bigger with a sizeable extension at the back.” This is just as well, because Matt and Rachel need space for Ted, their enormous Newfoundland dog. Matt and Rachel bought the house in August 2005. “It was in a poor state,” remembers Rachel. “An elderly lady had been living in it, and the décor was pretty horrendous. I don’t think anything had been done to the place since the 1960s because 40 June/July 09 pukka

there was bright purple paint on the walls and the carpets were old. It was ‘liveable’ - you could paint the walls and move in and make do. But the kitchen wasn’t functional and the bathroom was very old.” The couple moved in with Rachel’s mum, and asked an architect to draw up plans for the structural work that would be needed to open out the living areas. Then, in February 2006, Matt set about gutting the house, taking a sledgehammer to the kitchen and bathroom. “I’d started work on the staircase, too”, says Matt, “but then our builders came round to do a preliminary check and said to Rachel: ‘You’d better tell your partner to stop there! We’ll

take it from here...’ I found the demolition side of things quite therapeutic, if truth be told, so I could have kept going...” By the time the building work started in spring 2006, all the carpets, cupboards, wardrobes and wallpaper had been ripped out. The builders began by knocking down the back walls of the house and building the extension. With a new designer kitchen in-situ, the downstairs now has the look and feel of a city loft apartment. “I think this space works especially well,” says Rachel. “It’s so light rather like having a big conservatory on the back of the house, but without it being too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter.”

interiors The kitchen is from Interiors of Harrogate (01423 528885) and features concrete worktops; and the paint is Farrow and Ball’s Blue Gray (01202 876141).

When it came to planning the décor, says Matt, things went very smoothly indeed. “Rachel is good with colour,” he says, “so she tends to get on with that. But we both have similar tastes in furniture, fixtures and fittings. We know what we like and so it’s very easy to decide on how something should look. For instance, we both agreed immediately on the kitchen style and the fact that we wanted the entire interior to have very clean lines.” Rachel admits that they are not fans of extravagant colour, but explains that she didn’t want lowkey tones everywhere. “We wanted to put a bit of ‘us’ in the interior style,” she says, “so we worked on having splashes of colour here and

there in the soft furnishings.” Wooden floors were laid downstairs, with ceramic tiles in the kitchen and upstairs bathroom. There were some heart-in-the-mouth moments during the renovation process: getting the steel supports into the ceilings, for instance, was a tricky, but ultimately achievable job. Probably the worst day, remembers Rachel, was when there was a flood inside the house. “It happened two weeks before our wedding when we’d practically finished everything. Matt was going on his stag night and I was having my hen party at the house that evening. Then, all of a sudden, the electrics went: a total power shut-down. When we had them

checked out, we discovered a flood under the floorboards under the stairs.” The surrounding area is clay and with all the building work going on - and the house being open to the elements - the drainage had been blocked and the rain had poured in. With all the work now completed, Matt and Rachel are keen to get started on another renovation project. “We’d do it again, definitely,” says Matt. “In fact, in a perfect world, we’d have a house renovation project going on all the time. Although now we’d like to have time to relax and enjoy the space we’ve created.” www.elev8me.co.uk pukka June/July 09 41

EDUCATION

PRIVATE AND MAINSTREAM EDUCATION HOW TO CHOOSE WHAT IS RIGHT FOR YOUR CHILD Many parents are increasingly choosing private schooling as it offers a number of advantages to state school provisions

A

n independent education offers a higher quality of teaching, discipline and promotes an environment that enables children to take responsibility for their work and it is a sector which continues to flourish. Private schools usually have smaller class sizes and achieve higher examination results than mainstream state schools. Class sizes are between five and 13 pupils on average in a private school; compared to approximately 30 pupils per class in a state school. Many parents feel the extra attention their children receive as a consequence of the smaller private school class sizes improves their educational experience. Private school students enjoy the lowest-ever ratios with one teacher for every 9.5 pupils. Mainstream education works on a catchment area basis, where pupils will

be allotted places predominately at state schools in their immediate areas. Many parents opt to go down the private school route as a result of being unhappy with state school provisions in their area. State schools highly rated by Ofsted reports tend to be highly popular and often over-subscribed. In drastic instances, families have been reported to move to a new home within the catchment area of better schools, hoping their new location will assure their child has a place. However, this does not guarantee children will be selected at their parents’ first choice state school. Parents keen to send their children to private school often do so because they like the freedom and flexibility to choose the best school irrespective of catchment areas. Additionally in private education, there is also the option of boarding schools and single

sex schooling choices. Private schools also tend to offer more extracurricular activities and after-hours care, a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities, and excellent sports and drama activities. Choosing the right schooling option for your children is one that must consider a number of factors, including seeking your child’s viewpoint. Each case of private versus mainstream must be decided on an individual, case-by-case basis. Each state and private school has differing merits, pros and cons. By thoroughly researching and visiting schools in your area, you will begin to form an opinion of what is best from both your child’s wellbeing perspective and from a financial perspective, leaving you with a firm decision on which school, whether it is a mainstream or private, will be best for your child.

Working in conjunction with both DEFRA and Hull Wildlife Trust, they have carefully created the lakes and surrounding areas to fully promote the correct habitat and encourage diversity. As a result, wildlife abounds, including deer, hares, swans, ducks, sand martins and, of course, herons. The lakes themselves are a coarse and fly fisherman’s dream. In addition, with advice from the Forestry Commission, in excess of 40,000 trees of all varieties have been planted. Seeing really is believing - so why not come and savour a little piece of the Lake District in the heart of East Yorkshire. 46 June/July 09 pukka

A

ccording to my research, the rainy season in Thailand lasts from June to November. According to my experience, the British rainy season lasts from January to December, with a slight break when the sun might put in an appearance for two weeks at the back end of July. So in view of this, and the not insignificant Met Office severe weather warning for that Friday evening, it’s no surprise that driving up to Boston Spa we met with rain of biblical proportions. But such is the dedication - and the pull of a three course meal - that we laughed in the face of thunder, lightning, and Paul Hudson, and arrived at Thai Jantra only ten minutes late. We also hit a thirty second window of opportunity when fortune smiled on us and the rain briefly slowed, which meant I could safely leg it across the pavement without looking like a late entry in a wet t-shirt competition.

48 June/July 09 pukka

Thai Jantra is so easy to find that “A1, turn right, and it’s on your right” was all the navigation needed. We were welcomed by Andy, who made us feel right at home and showed us to our table, which already had spicy chilli crackers waiting for us. My big mistake was spending a few minutes taking in the atmosphere, seeing who was wearing what and who had ordered what, by which time there were only two crackers left. Hmmm, I’ll not be doing that again. We tackled drinks first, and I let John pick the wine. He chose a bottle of Pierre Frick Gewurztraminer; if you’re not a big fan of sweeter wines then you need to think again, because this went so well with the food, and also made excellent drinking on its own. Most of the wines here were organic, with house wines around £12 for a Semillon Chardonnay or a Cabernet Merlot, or £3.75 for a large glass of the same. Starters included soups, for example chicken

and coconut, or a mixed starter platter, which contained a selection of dishes (also available separately) such as spring rolls, chicken satay, and Thai fishcakes. My starter of tiger prawns and grapefruit salad had a spicy kick to it, without being too dangerous, and was, in my opinion, the dish of the day. Don’t be put off by the word “salad” in the description – it didn’t come with lettuce, cucumber and a dollop of Hellmann’s, which you might have expected. John’s scallops and asparagus were beautifully cooked, and both our dishes came with some seriously artistic vegetables. For main course, John chose steamed sea bass with ginger, soy sauce and pepper sauce, which was delicate, sweet and spicy all at once, and proved that there is nothing better than fish cooked simply and well. I chose a dish of slow cooked beef with mixed Thai herbs, coriander root, cinnamon and soy sauce, which was tender, and had a combination of flavours without being too hot. Sticky rice and noodles with vegetables completed the course. If we’d decided to go for the set meals, there were two options on the menu, ranging from £18 for groups of three or more, to £20 for groups of four or more. As you’d expect, these menus took a cross-section of the choices available and, in presenting them together, would take some of the indecision out of the process. Personally, I think there’s nothing wrong with a nice bit of indecision, and I loved the fact that there were so many different dishes on the menu – and that the pork dishes were called Moo! As we all know, it’s the law that no matter how much you’ve eaten during your main course, there’s always room for pudding. I chose plum fritters, with a cheeky request for the accompanying vanilla ice cream to be substituted for their amazing rhubarb ice cream (don’t you just love all things rhubarb?), and John chose a dessert of bananas in coconut milk with

sesame seeds, which was warm and lovely. Everyone was welcoming and helpful and, bless them, they didn’t laugh at us and our attempts at Thai pronunciation when we ordered from the menu – although they probably creased up when they got back to the kitchen. And despite the restaurant being full to the rafters, we weren’t hurried along; neither did we feel that we were waiting too long for our food, with the whole experience being taken at a relaxed pace. * Thai Jantra also provides outside catering service.

MY SISTER’S KEEPER (Released: 26th June)

Jodi Picoult’s best-selling tear-jerker gets the big screen treatment with Cameron Diaz and Alec Baldwin in the lead roles. Anna (Abigail Breslin) is conceived through IVF to be a genetic match for her older sister Kate (Sofia Vassilieva) who suffers from leukaemia. But when Anna comes of age, she begins legal proceedings against her parents… Yes, we agree: it could be too maudlin for words – but at least it’s in the hands of acclaimed actordirector, Nick Cassavetes.

BRUNO (Released: 10th July) The latest creation of comic Sacha Baron Cohen - the man who gave us Ali G and Borat - is a gay Austrian fashion designer who causes chaos in the USA with unsuspecting members of the public. The trailer is hilarious, but this is one to watch from behind your hands, because the embarrassment potential is huge… PUKKA MOVIE CHOICE

HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE (Released: 15th July)

Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint star in another Hogwarts-set adventure… but this has to be the darkest HP tale so far. And is it us? Or will the boy wizard have to start shaving very soon?

IMAGINE THAT (31st July)

ICE AGE 3: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS (Released: 1st July) One for the kiddy-winks - and just in time for summer, too. This is the latest instalment in the animated adventures of Manny the mammoth, Sid the sloth, Scrat the squirrel and Diego the sabre-toothed cat. Will it be one sequel too many, though?

Eddie Murphy gets cute in a comedy about a businessman who has more time for his work than his adorable seven-year-old daughter. But when things start going wrong in his professional life, Eddie finds the answers to his problems by entering his daughter’s imaginary world…

(playing square-jawed resistance hero John Connor) is. In fact, a recording of Bale ranting at one of the crew members went viral earlier this year, much to his embarrassment. The plot? Well, it involves murder, mayhem, explosions and the piping hot (in more ways than one) Moon Bloodgood (yes, it’s her real name). Your other half is going to love it.

DVD

HE’S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU (Released: 15th June)

This one arrived without much of a fanfare at the cinema and didn’t make much of an impact at the box office. That’s a shame because, actually, it’s a fine ensemble piece with a dynamite cast acting out inter-connecting love stories: Scarlett Johansson, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Connolly star as love-lorn losers in Baltimore. Expect it to do better on DVD.

Also showing… You can run, but you can’t hide from TERMINATOR SALVATION (3rd June). Arnie isn’t in this one - but Christian Bale

KROD MANDOON AND THE FLAMING SWORD OF FIRE

(BBC2, June)

At last! A Brit sitcom which is actually holdonto-your-sides funny (sorry, My Family, but we don’t find you even slightly amusing, even if your studio audience does). Krod Mandoon is a sword-and-sandals mickey-take – a little bit Lord of the Rings, a little bit Star Wars - featuring a beefed up Sean Maguire (yep: from Grange Hill and EastEnders) as a warrior hero struggling against evil ruler, Chancellor Dongalor (Matt Lucas). The delicious India de Beaufort also stars as feisty Amazonian heroine. Look out for our exclusive interview with her in this issue!

Perfect Harmony S

inger-songwriter duo Helen Turner and Sharon Winfield have been a regular fixture on the York music scene for two years, playing as TWO. We find out more about the band and discover that nothing less than world domination will do… How long have you been a duo? What brought you together?

TWO: We’ve been singing together for about three years. It’s funny how we got together. We were both losing our way a bit doing our solo gigs and playing in various bands. We knew of each other but our paths didn’t really cross, though we had mutual friends. Then having both gone through a bit of a barren time musically for a few years, we bumped into each other at Beverley Folk Festival and quickly realised that we were both in the same place - needing to reinvent our music. We formed a duo over coffee! We insisted it was a bit of fun - but that lasted a couple of weeks, after which we began to take it really seriously. Is it your own material or do you perform covers?

TWO: We write everything ourselves, mostly separately, though there are a few songs where we have collaborated more. Our live performances are an acoustic set up - two guitars and two voices. We’ve often toyed with the idea of doing covers, but... we like our own music! And

we haven’t found a cover we can really get our teeth into yet. Actually, part of the buzz is writing, arranging and performing a song that is original.

pleased with how that’s going.

What are you working on at the moment?

TWO: World domination - failing that, we have our 10-year plan! This involves us playing as many festivals as we can, writing and recording as much as possible and, of course, selling our CDs to anyone who likes our music. We take each month at a time, making sure we gig regularly and keep up the creative work on new material. It’s a lot of hard work (we are constantly comparing biceps!), but we love it and 10 years may not be long enough for us to do everything we want to.

TWO: We’re recording our second album with a York label. The first one - called ONE - has sold well and we still love it and perform that material; but now we’re experimenting with new material. We are working on songs with darker content, but we still have our lively banter that can only come from two women sharing a stage! What’s next for you gig-wise? Is there one you’re most excited about?

TWO: We’re supporting Fairport Convention on 29 May at the Duchess in York. They are our heroes actually, and we’re still very giddy about it! The very next day we head off to Cheltenham to play Wychwood Festival. Then our own big summer gig is on 24 July at the Duchess, too. We’re intending to release some new tracks at the same time. It’s all go at the moment! What are your influences? Do you both have the same musical tastes?

TWO: Helen has converted Sharon to the Indigo Girls to balance the murky folky background she has, which we don’t talk about! Helen is much more rounded in her taste which helps when we’re producing and arranging. Actually, collaborating with other musicians is the best way to introduce new influences, which we’re doing with our current recording. We’re really

What are your plans and ambitions for the future?

You obviously have busy lives. How do you manage to fit it all in?

TWO: We don’t! We both would love to devote more time to the music and maybe one day we’ll be able to. At the moment, though, we have to just juggle things, get support from others, squeeze as much as we can out of the time we have. We’re indebted to the patience of the label who work with us in our scheduling nightmare. It’s a particularly female skill, we think, to do it all… You’re a female duo - so do you always get on?

TWO: We never fall out, but we often have differences of opinion. Actually - and this is probably a good thing - we are very different characters. Sharon has an ‘earthy’ humour and looks at the big picture, whilst Helen has her wit and is in charge of the detail. We work very well together. We split the musical input fifty/fifty. What’s your key to being as successful as you can be?

TWO: Confidence and self belief and grabbing every opportunity you come across! Masses of action. Network like crazy. And never, ever give up. We both gave up on our dreams for a while and it does NOT bring peace of mind, we can tell you! We’re proud of what we’ve achieved so far and so looking forward to whatever the future holds. You can find out more about TWO at www.twomusic.co.uk Their album ‘One’ is also available on iTunes as well as on their website and at gigs. pukka June/July 09 59

SPORT

LADIES’ CRICKET

Cricket has an image problem. There is a perception that England fans are middle-aged white men who enjoy guzzling pints and county cricket fans are seen as older folk huddled together on chilly Headingley terraces, warming their hands on flasks of tea

T

here is truth in these stereotypes. Research by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) shows 65 per cent of fans are male, mostly middle-aged, and only 35 per cent are female. But the picture is changing fast and female enthusiasm has surged. Back in 2005, around 450,000 females played cricket in England. Since then, that figure has more than doubled to one million. The ECB says participation has shot up 45 per cent since last year. Former England captain Clare Connor, the ECB’s Head of Women’s Cricket, says: “We’re hearing every week that new girls’ sections are starting in clubs. The national under-13 and under-15 Lady Taverners competitions are getting more teams every year. There are a lot of initiatives encouraging schoolgirls and young women to play.” The ECB’s grassroots’ work has been made easier by the success of the women’s team. When they won the World Cup in Australia in March this year, the headline-writers contrasted their success with the woeful struggles of England’s men in the Caribbean. “We seem to create even more of a media story when the men are not doing well,” Clare says. “Cricket writers enjoy creating headlines along the lines of ‘the men are losing, but look how great the women are’.” The media exposure was unprecedented, especially for Captain 60 June/July 09 pukka

Charlotte Edwards and star batsman Claire Taylor. “It took the players by storm,” says Clare. “They appeared on the Alan Titchmarsh show and on the BBC’s One Show, and Charlotte was interviewed by Gabby Logan on Inside Sport and also appeared on A Question of Sport. They were reaching out to a more typical sports audience.” The media’s increasing interest dates back to 2005 when England won the women’s Ashes at the same time as the men sensationally beat Australia. The two teams shared a celebratory open-top bus tour of London and met the Queen and Prime Minister. Since then, the women’s approach has become more professional. A full-time physio, and a strength and conditioning

coach, were introduced last year. As a result, the batsmen are hitting more boundaries; and the bowlers - including Barnsley pace bowler Katherine Brunt have picked up speed. The squad is now so fit there’s hardly been an injury in the last 15 months.

England won the women’s Ashes at the same time as the men sensationally beat Australia This summer is the biggest yet. Like the men, the women face an Ashes series and a World Twenty20 Cup. The women’s Twenty20 semi-finals and final will be played on the same day as the men’s finals and be broadcast live on Sky. “It’s a great opportunity to promote ourselves as Twenty20 is the best way to sell cricket to women,” says Clare. “It’s fast-paced, athletic, and fits into busy lifestyles. Lots of families attend Twenty20 games and girls love it.” Another women’s win could create headlines praising them and mocking the men. Or, if both sides win, there could be another open-top tour of London. Either way, the women’s game will go from strength to strength.

Freewheelin’… and three-wheelin’! Pete Cattle’s Pirate Trike Hire is a must for people with a free-spirit – or those who simply love open-road adventure…

P

ete Cattle has always been a big motorbike fan. “I’ve loved them ever since I was 17 years of age,” he says. “I’ve always ridden them and I’ll take a bike over a car every time. The buzz and the freedom you feel on a motorbike is wonderful. It gets under your skin pretty quickly.” A year ago, however, Pete decided to start a unique new business, hiring out not a motorbike, but a motortrike, to frustrated would-be bikers. This is a three-wheeled German-made FX5 trike with a four-cylinder Boxer engine and multipoint injection system that can reach 100mph (although remember to stick to the speed limit). The FX5 looks incredible – and it’s also brand new to the UK; so if you hire one for the day, you’ll be one of a kind on the road. You don’t have to be an experienced “hardened” biker to use Pirate Trike Hire’s trikes, either. “They’re a doddle to drive,” explains Pete. “If

you have an ordinary car licence, then you can drive a trike, no problem. I’ll take people out for a spin and explain and demonstrate the trike to then. They drive it back… and then they’re off. It’s just like driving a car. The FX5 is as solid as a rock.”

But as you’re positioned low down on the vehicle – and in the open air – it feels thrilling and exhilarating, and similar to the experience of riding a bike. “With the added bonus,” says Pete, “of not having to lean and put your feet down, because the trike has three wheels.” This is seriously good customised-looking fun – and because there’s a plush seat in the back, there’s room for passengers, too. Pirate Trike Hire is based in Bishop Burton, East Yorkshire, and a range of hire options are available, as are gift vouchers allowing you to purchase a ride for your friends and family. A glance at Pete’s website reveals that his customers have a variety of reasons for wanting to hire the FX5 trike. “It was a surprise present from my wife for my 50th Birthday,” says one. “What a day! I never stopped grinning - it was fantastic.” “It’s a lot of fun to drive,” says another. “I

The FX5 looks incredible – and it’s also brand new to the UK would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys the open road.” “A lot of people who want to hire the FX5 trike never passed their motorbike test,” says Pete. “So this is a great way to experience the freedom you feel on a motorbike. It’s a novel thing to ride – and, as a business, a novel thing to do!” www.piratetrikehire.co.uk 07939 406322 pukka June/July 09 63

SUMMER FUN! Summer’s just around the corner (fingers crossed!) and that means one thing – we’ll all want to get our hands on a sporty cabriolet and enjoy all the benefits that open top driving has to offer

W

hat’s better than feeling the sun on your face and the wind in your hair? Well, as Top Gearsavvy girls know, it’s all about what wheels you enjoy the great outdoors in. Any cabriolet worth its salt has to look great with the roof off as well and on. It’s got to come in a range of colours, including white because it goes with everything. And it must turn heads for all the right reasons. There are lots of convertibles out there but, ever since Princess Di took to the road in her classic Audi 80, this famous brand has developed a range of open top stunners which promise love at first sight... AUDI TT ROADSTER The ultimate in sporty glamour, the TT Roadster makes you feel special from the moment you turn on the engine. As solid as its coupe twin, it holds the road and there’s a model for every budget from the turbocharged 2.0 litre up to the top-of-the-range 3.2 litre, four wheel drive V6. You’ll love the sporty engine purr when the roof’s down and if you struggle with gearboxes, the six-speed S Tronic direct-shift acts just like an automatic. The interior is as

sumptuous as you’d expect with faux-suede and leather seats and a flat-bottomed sports steering wheel. A cabrio made for two makes the TT Roadster perfect for girlie shopping trips (there’s ample boot space for all your bags) and romantic weekend getaways. Reliable and safe with front and side airbags and electronic stability control, every TT Roadster also comes with an immobiliser, alloy wheels, climate control and remote central locking. The roof drops in a matter of seconds and your hair will stay in one place thanks to the electric wind-blocker. Quite simply, the TT Roadster looks and drives like a dream. Once you’ve got behind the wheel, you won’t want to leave. What the TT Roadster says about you: Top-to-toe driving glamour. You know what you want and you know just how to get it. All your friends will want to be your co-driver in this sportiest of numbers! AUDI A3 CABRIOLET

MAY (CELEBRATIONS)

Bright blessings for those of you born in May! Make those travel arrangements you have been trying to plan, maybe with someone close. If finalising old situations that have been awaiting closure, use diplomacy. Feelings run high - you may be pleasantly surprised… and even receive the ultimate compliment.

JUNE (PAST TIMES) What could have felt like a long trek should be coming to a halt. But looking back and reflecting on things from the past won’t help you move forward. As you approach a new time of insight, enjoy the journey ahead with confidence. Good planning will help you shine, and contacts from old friends may bring surprising news, invitations and memories.

JULY (REJUVENATION) This could be a demanding family time, which requires insight and understanding. If celebrations are on the cards you should enjoy the time ahead. Mixed emotions should be running high, so choose your words wisely! This is a tiring time with some obstacles to overcome, but nothing you can’t handle with your nurturing skills. A new hair colour or style will get the attention you desire.

AUGUST (CHARITY) This is a de-cluttering time, so you could be offered opportunities to lead projects or tasks that require good organisational skills, especially around work. Use your intuition and you should have all the guidance you need to succeed. Don’t forget to send to a worthy cause those items you no longer require when sorting out clutter. Moving home will be a beneficial exercise.

SEPTEMBER (ENERGY) This seems like a good time for recuperating and relaxing. If you’re single, new relationships could be just around the corner; if you’re attached there’s nothing like “time out” to revitalise and rejuvenate those low energies. Look out for those ‘take a break’ offers that could be just the tonic to tempt you into action. Expect family news!

OCTOBER (LOVE) A romantic time. If you’re single, you’ll be spinning around after flowers and proposals. If you’re attached, take time out for each other. Anniversaries and celebrations are looming – but, whatever is on the cards, you could indulge in some retail therapy to find that essential outfit. Don’t forget that essential manicure, either...

NOVEMBER (ACHIEVEMENTS) This could be a time that you or those in your close circle finally finish projects, exams and/or study. Whatever the end result try to have some fun and celebrate all that hard work and effort. Look out for important documents in the post. For luck, wear blue to help with communication during meetings or interviews.

DECEMBER (CHANGES) Time to look at the real ‘you’ and bring about the changes you have been waiting for. You may feel the desire to move forward onto your true path. Look within to seek your innermost desires and replenish your energies. Take time out for some holistic therapy to help you feel your best.

JANUARY (REVAMP) They say a change is as good as a rest. You’ll find yourself indulging in new colours and, if you are tempted to revamp your home, you may surprise yourself by getting rid of possessions you have held onto for too long. Relationships can particularly benefit when there is a chance meeting for the unattached.

FEBRUARY (FRESH IDEAS) Using fresh ideas moves you on from old to new. You have plenty to express, but your own inspiration and imagination is required if you are going to impress. This is your time to show others what you can achieve, and opportunities can surprise you.

MARCH (TIMING) If you feel the need to speak out on issues that need closure, you’d better choose the right moment. This could be a demanding time for those who are important in your life; even so, you may be pleasantly surprised how things turn out in the end if you approach things diplomatically. If you work alone, use your charm to bring the results you desire in career matters.

APRIL (HARMONY) You are feeling peaceful following a low period in your life - a good time for clarifying objectives and making clear decisions. Regarding family and home life, be flexible. If you feel the need to rekindle your energies, chill out with an holistic spa therapy. Journeys to peaceful locations could refresh your thoughts and lift your spirits.

I

t’s not fair, really. India de Beaufort isn’t just disconcertingly delicious-looking (just ask any straight male of your acquaintance) - she is also a thoroughly nice, down-to-earth and distinctly un-starry person. When Pukka hooks up with the 21-year-old actress, singer-songwriter and model for a chat down a transatlantic phoneline (she’s in LA, and we’re in – ay up! – York) we tell her that a certain seven-yearold girl we know is a big fan. She has, after all, watched India many times on the BBC’s reinvented Basil Brush Show. “Ooh!” says India. “Is she there? Put her on the phone!” So we do, much to our seven-year-old’s squeally delight. Squeals turns to shrieks however, when, a week later, a signed photo of India turns up in the post for her. What a good egg. India, then, deserves all the success that is undoubtedly coming her way. She started her career on the Basil Brush Show, aged just 15; then she landed a role in the Simon Pegg comedy, Run, Fat Boy, Run, directed by Friends star, David Schwimmer. “David was really kind and worked with me on the script,” she says. “He was like a mentor to

me. Singing had always been a big thing for me, but he said: ‘I know you want to be a musician… but take acting seriously. Go off and learn your trade.’ He believed in me – and that literally changed my life.” India joined Schwimmer’s management, and things snowballed. She is now the face of make-up line Me By {Me}zhgan, designed by one of Hollywood’s most sought-after make-up artists, Mezhgan Hussainy, Head of the Make-Up Department for American Idol. India is also starring in a new US-UK series called Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire, a comedy which co-stars Matt ‘Little Britain’ Lucas and Sean Maguire (from EastEnders and the spoof movie Meet the Spartans). What’s more, she and it are receiving rave reviews... Q: So India - let’s talk Krod Mandoon. You play a feisty Pagan princess, who is part Xena: Warrior Princess and part… er… nymphomaniac…

A: Yes! It’s great to play a character who kicks ass and wears a cool leather costume. I play Aneka, who is icy and powerful and I can really get my teeth into the role. I’ve got an older brother and I’ve always been a guy’s girl. Being

on set with all the lads just kicking around and having a laugh was really good fun. Q: What’s in your CD player at the moment?

A: A mix-tape that a friend made for me. It’s got a band called Gregory and the Hawk on it, plus Fight from Above and a singer called Erin Bode… and my brother’s band is on there, too. He’s called Tom Beaufort Lloyd, and his band is called The Frantic. I’m going to be singing on their next single. Q: What’s the last film you went to see?

A: Can it be the one I saw on the plane over to LA? I saw Twilight, about the girl who falls in love with a vampire, which I loved. I even got emotional at one point, which is a bit embarrassing on a plane… Q: What’s your favourite TV show?

A: Lark Rise to Candleford. I could watch it all day. It makes me feel cosy. It’s full of history and it has Dawn French and Julia Sawalha in it. It’s what the BBC does best. I love it. Q: Your favourite food?

A: Easy. Cooked English breakfast, with all the trimmings… Q: Have you ever Googled your own name?

A: Yes! Or at least I did when I first appeared in the Basil Brush Show... but I learned the hard way that it’s not such a good idea. My family are avid Googlers, so I ask them to tell me the good stuff. Who wants to know the bad stuff? There’s also some scary stuff, too… Q: What does your mum think of your sex symbol status?

A: She’s the most supportive mother in the world. When I first got all the Krod Mandoon scripts through I realised there was a sex scene in it, which I didn’t know about when I

stions... got the role. It turned out to be nothing, but I remember sitting with my mum having a chat about possible nude scenes – because I’m not an actress who gets ‘em out at the drop of a hat... and certainly not for a comedy! My mum was the one who said: ‘Take the job.’ But she can’t watch me kissing Sean. Or Matt Lucas, come to that. Aneka has a little, um, ‘exchange’ with him, too. Q: Your favourite actor and actress?

A: Robert Downey Jr. There’s something crazy and unpredictable about him. And for an actress, I’m going to say Meryl Streep. I can watch films of hers and not be crazy about the movie… but, wow, she’s good every single time. Incredible. It’s an acting masterclass. Q: Who’s your greatest inspiration?

A: I really don’t want to be corny and say ‘my mum’ – but I have no choice. She became a single parent not long after I was born and raised me and my brother while holding down jobs. There is nothing she can’t do and nothing fazes her. She’s incredibly intelligent and she was dancer – and a fabulous one, too. She’s a sexy, great woman and I count my blessings for her. Q: How do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

A: I would hope to be married and be having at least one baby. My game plan is to work my ass off for the next 10 years… and then work my ass off at having at family. Having said that, I have no intention of getting a ring on my finger any time soon. I’m not even interested in having a boyfriend right now! I never know where I’m going to be and – I’ve done this before – you end up not enjoying your job as much as you should if you’re missing someone. But, hey, never say never… • Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire starts on BBC2, on 11 June, 9pm. pukka June/July 09 69
