Pukka’s Catch-up

S

SALLY OLIVER

ince Joining Emmerdale in 2007, Lexi Nicholls has become a household name because of her fiery nature and troublesome ways. Sally Oliver who plays Lexi, has had some of the best soap storylines come her way and has really made Lexi one of the most likable editions to Emmerdale. These days, Lexi seems to have calmed her rebellious streak under the influence of Carl King her rather estranged husband-to-be. In the style of all soap weddings, you just know there are going to be plenty of fireworks when this couple come to unite and because the Pukka girls are very impatient, we got hold of Sally to give us the run down on the expected nuptials. I suppose the main thing that I’m excited to hear about is the wedding of Lexi and Carl (Which is an hour long special), how do you feel about the story?

Its been really enjoyable to film and its quite a different story from usual as its not really linear and new things

are added with plenty of twists and turns. Its been great to get all dressed up too and be a bride again. What is the dress like that you will be wearing?

The dress is lovely very simple and fitted. Its off-white and made out of quite a silky matetrial with a v-neck and splashes of black on the neck. Because obviously Lexi is on a tight budget with her losing all her money, she employs Gennie to copy a design and make the dress for her and although it starts off going wrong, it is perfect on the day. Everyone helps out for the wedding and its all a big village effort. At the moment the relationship with Carl is very strained will we see any explosions?

There will be early warning signs of things to come and Lexi is unsure of what will happen. In the morning she is excited to be getting married but also apprehensive so its mixed emotions. Her and Carl got engaged under unusual circumstances and throughout the wedding planning Carl hasn’t been encouraging rather telling her to do it alone. I think she is worried that he won’t go through with it. What do you think will happen to Lexi if the wedding doesn’t go the way she wishes? Can you see her staying on in Emmerdale?

She will be devastated as Carl is her life and because of that, she may consider leaving Emmerdale but Lexi is a fighter and she will collect herself and get on top of things if it does go wrong. Since you joined Emmerdale in 2007, your stories just keep getting bigger and bigger, how do you feel that Lexi has evolved?

Lexi can be mean and ruthless and she gets what she wants but that was because she had never been in love and things had been messy with finding out that her sister was her mum etc. Through Carl we can see her softer side and even though Carl is not the perfect one to be in love with, in her mind he his, we can see her nicer side coming through.

4 April 09 pukka

Do you also see yourself evolving along with the character?

You have keep learning new things and each time you get a new script you read it through justifying why your character would do that. You roll with it and adapt and always have to keep working. Lexi is known as a trouble-maker, do you see any part of yourself reected in her? Perhaps a bit of rebellion?

No, we are completely different! Although sometimes I imagine what she would do in situations and it is a great excuse to say outrageous things to people that you know Lexi would say! So briey, what can we expect from the episode on the 31st March?

Expect high emotion and drama and a lot of unexpected twists and turns to the story and also a lot of excitement!

ROXANNE PALLETT

A

fter three years in Emmerdale playing the gorgeous Jo Sudgen, Roxanne has graced our screens with her effortless lifts and twirls on the hit show Dancing On Ice. The 26 year old beauty talks to Pukka on the trials and tribulations of skating and how much fun she has had over these past months. You have had a really busy few months being on Dancing On Ice, how was that experience?

It was incredible. I remember watching it last year with my mum and thought that it can’t be as hard as it looks! I was wrong! But its been the most fun ever and such a whirlwind adventure. I’m not an athletic girl so its really taken me out of my comfort zone and its so far removed from anything I’ve done before. Now that your unfortunately out of the competition, Who do you want to win?

Its really hard because everyone is your friend and you know how hard it is because you’ve been there and done the regime and I don’t have any favourites. I think the person who deserves to win would be Donal because he has tried the hardest, he was in the skateoff in week one and he has fallen twice this week. He has climbed the highest mountain regarding effort and progress. But Jessica is also a really close friend of mine

and we’ve shared the high and lows together and she is not that confident surprisingly, behind closed doors she is really vulnerable so I’m supporting her too. Oh and I can’t forget Ray Quinn, I would pay to see him! What was the training regime like?

I left Emmerdale on Friday in November and went straight into training on the Monday. The others had been training from October so I had to catch up. Its been solid from November to December training three hours a day and then there was the Christmas break and after that we were training four hours a day including weekends because Saturday is the busiest being six hours of rehearsing and camera checks. Has your body changed because of it?

I haven’t lost weight but my wobbly bits are much firmer and just generally more toned but I’m still eating like a machine and demolishing tins of biscuits. I remember Adele Silva trying to talk me into it and she kept saying that it was a crash-course into a healthy body and after the first week I phoned her to tell her I hated her because it was more like boot camp! You had some fabulous outfits and the Pussycat dolls was quite a raunchy song, was it easy for you to be a bit of a temptress?

I love the Pussycat Dolls and pop acts like the

Sugababes and Girls Aloud and so I was really excited to hear I was going to be dancing to that song but then I saw the chair and I thought “I can’t do this”, I kept falling off it and it kept falling over and it wasn’t sexy at all! You seemed to have a few moments with the judges, what was the story there?

I’m quite a feisty character and really all their comments are like water of a ducks back. I’m glad that they picked on me because I can hold my own, I think it worried Melinda Messenger a bit. I’ve got such thick-skin from acting so nothing really bothers me. I treated it like Panto and gave the audience a good laugh. They want to be entertained and you need the conflict and drama. What about the tour coming up, are you excited?

I’m back in training tomorrow! I have had five days since leaving the show to build up my life again because for the past three months I have had no social life as I‘ve just been too knackered. I’ve not been to the supermarket, gone shopping or even sat down with a cup of tea and a newspaper. I’ve been trying to catch up with friends and now I have the tour which is in two weeks. So your going to have to do more training?

Yes, I’ve got to learn the Bolero, we all do because the audience have a touch keypad and so every night they will choose someone to perform it but they’ll probably always choose Todd to do it! After the tour you’ll probably be glad just to rest, what are your next plans?

Image: Voodooks Photos

After three years of Emmerdale and Dancing On Ice, I’ll need some rest and a week in the sun at least. But I want to go back into acting after this towards the end of the year, as this was a challenge for myself and acting is still something that I want to do. pukka April 09 13

HERON LAKES Seeing really is believing... Heron Lakes Luxury Lodge Park is the culmination of eight years of detailed research and planning, which has resulted in the realisation of the vision the Bird family have strived to achieve.

W

orking on the basic principles of nature and a like minded community co-existing to the benefit of the environment they are moving forward in leaps and bounds to achieve this goal. Working in conjunction with both DEFRA and Hull Wildlife Trust, they have carefully created the lakes and surrounding areas to fully promote the correct habitat and encourage diversity. As a result, wildlife abounds, including deer, hares, swans, ducks, sandmartins and of course herons. The lakes themselves are a coarse and fly fisherman’s dream. In addition, with advice from the Forestry Commission in excess of 40,000 trees of all varieties have been planted. Seeing really is believing so why not come and savour a little piece of the Lake District in the heart of East Yorkshire. 16 April 09 pukka

“The idea came at a great time for me, because I was learning to embrace my pale skin” Says Nicola, who has finally accepted that pale is not only interesting but beautiful too. Her range of make-up, Dainty Doll, is especially designed for fair-skinned girls who find buying make-up that looks natural a challenge. To help her succeed, she collaborated with make-up brand Jelly Pong Pong to release tones to flatter and praise pale skin.

HER RANGE CONSISTS OF: BLUSH & CONTOUR |In lovely shades of Blossom, which adds a apricot glow, and Bloom which gives pink tint to the face.

FOUNDATION In shades of Porcelain, Ivory and White, these super smooth skin soufflés are so soft and creamy and are specially formulated for combination skin.

Crabtree & Evelyn Introduces

INDIA HICKS ISLAND NIGHT

A Moonlit Tropical Garden. An Enchanted World Of Possibility

C

rabtree & Evelyn introduces India Hicks Island Night , the brand new fragrance destined to send you on a journey through paradise. Inspired by India Hicks’ life in the Caribbean, Island Night captures all that is sensual and beautiful about the islands and the scent leaves you enraptured with the idea of golden beaches at dusk and shimmering stars in a indigo sky. To create India Hicks Island Night, India worked closely with Crabtree & Evelyn, from fragrance and formulation to packaging and design. Her inspiration was from her surroundings; full moon evenings, the scent of night-blooming flowers and anemone shells. The result completely is breathtaking, a delicate balance of orchids, night-blooming flowers, orange blossom, green island palms and a woody musk accord that takes you to her tropical garden and an enchanted world of possibility. “I’ve always loved the feel of the island at night: the light of the moon as it casts its spell, the midnight blue of a sea that seems to go on forever and the sound of the waves sighing on the sand. Perhaps it’s a reminder of holidays spent on an island or the years of memories created here. Either way, to me, it is paradise. “When dusk falls over the island, something beautiful unfolds. Many flowers hide themselves for the evening, but others just begin to bloom, sending their fragrance, like a love letter,

whispered through the air.” INDIA HICKS The Island Night collection has been awarded the Royal Warrant by HRH Prince of Wales. India’s collection also includes Eau de Toilette, Evening Fragrance Compact with Enhancer, Creamy Body Wash, Milky Bath, Rich Body Cream, Smooth Body Lotion, Scented Candle and Fragrance Diffuser. All of which are free of parabens, mineral oil, sodium lauryl and laureth sulfate, propylene glycol, and colorants.

TO WIN A BEAUTIFUL BOTTLE OF Crabtree & Evelyn’s exotic new perfume please answer this simple question. What is the name of the delicate new fragrance from Crabtree & Evelyn? Miss Leeds

2009

AGENT MODELS will be choreographing the catwalk for the finale and providing the lucky winner with model representation. Other prizes for the winner include £1000 hair extensions from Great Lengths, £200 of make-up from Debenhams and gym membership and other goodies from The Village Hotel. The event is being hosted by Broadminded Events. Just like the heats, there will be a panel of judges at the final who’s task is to whittle down the 24 contestants to just five. The five finalists will then have to perform their special ‘talent’ and the finalist who makes the best impression overall will be crowned Miss Leeds 2009. Each of the 24 contestants will need to impress the judges with their personality, intelligence and kind nature. We as the judges are looking for the winner to be a hard worker who is dedicated and worthy of the miss Leeds title. The models will also be judged on their creativity in the ‘ecowear’ section of the show. Each model will have to create and wear their own outfit and present this to the audience and judges at the finale. The judges include Jacqueline Greenaway from Agent Models, Miss England 2008 (Laura Coleman), and Nicole Snape from Appeal PR. The public can vote for their favourite contestants by phone or text and the contestant with the most votes will automatically go through to the final five to perform their ‘talent’ in front of the judges. The final is being hosted by Real Radio’s Dixie from the breakfast show and will take place on the evening of Wednesday 8th April 2009 at the Carriage Works Theatre inside the Electric Press in Leeds. Drinks and canapes will be served from 6:30pm in the courtyard of the electric press before the grand finale commences at 7:30pm in the theatre. Tickets cost £20 each and include a free drink, canapes and access to the final of Miss Leeds 2009 where all 24 contestants will battle it out to win the crown and go on with the chance to become Miss England later in the year. This ticket also entitles the bearer to exclusive access to the after show party in the courtyard of the electric press once the show has finished. To reserve tickets please email info@broadmindedevents.co.uk. Please note; Winning the public vote will not guarantee winning the overall competition.

NEW FORD FIESTA CROWNED WHAT CAR? CAR OF THE YEAR 2009 The new Ford Fiesta has been declared as “the perfect car for now” by leading car magazine What Car?, as it names the Fiesta 1.25i Zetec the What Car? Car of the Year 2009.

T

he What Car? judges praised the new Fiesta inside and out, stating that no other supermini got close to its ‘look at me’ factor. The delicate curves and sharp edges made it the epitome of the stylish modern supermini. They

also commended the “zingy 1.25-litre engine, nimble handling and strong grip to make it a ‘brilliant winner’…”. Steve Fowler, What Car? editor, commented: “The Fiesta is the most complete small car we’ve ever tested – it’s practical enough to be

used as a family car, fun enough to be used as a sports car and stylish enough to make the right impression. It’s also affordable to buy, cheap to run and kind to the planet.” Regional director, John Leeman, at Ford main dealer Polar Ford, said: “This is tremendous news – the new Fiesta is already the UK’s best-selling car in the closing months of last year, and this ultimate endorsement by What Car? will drive the new Fiesta to even greater success this year.” Adding, Mr Leeman said: “Despite the economic gloom and the tough trading conditions, our sales have actually grown by 3% over the last year whereas the UK wide industry figures saw an 11.3% drop. We have seen a significant number of customers down-sizing their cars to smaller, modern and more economical models and Ford has a very strong line-up of cars here. Certainly, with low interest rates and great deals, it’s never been a better time to buy.” Adding to the success of Fiesta, the Ford Mondeo won Best Family Car and Best Estate for 2009. • For further details contact Polar Ford at: Jockey Lane, York.
