Carpeting
The school invested in a new carpet over the summer. Some think “it’s fresh and new,” while others think “it’s ugly.” Theatre teacher Ms. Rudy brought up an interesting point, saying, “It’s probably not the best time, while teachers are getting cut, to spend money on carpet,” she said. “But it’s fresh and new.” Due to the new carpeting, a no-water policy is being enforced. Water in the classroom has been prohibited in order to avoid any unnecessary spills. “It’s dumb that we can’t have water,” senior Olivia Miller said. “It doesn’t stain the carpet.”
Tardy Tables
Another change in the school is the the tardy tables being moved from the cross halls to being in the actual rooms. Students aren’t effected as much as teachers, but the response is generally positive. “I love it,” Ms. Rudy said. “It’s better than having precious time taken out of our one conference period.” This change has been a good thing, for teachers especially. It gives them the responsibility of assigning d-halls for tardies without the inconvenience. “It’s been really nice not having to remember where you’re supposed to be,” science teacher Mr. McGarity said.

One Conference Period
Teachers are generally upset about this new change. The response most faculty have had to the loss of one conference period has been negative. The change seems to have effected how the teachers feel during the day, which in turn affects the way they teach. “We all care about the kids,” Mr. McGarity assured. “I’m more tired during the day I don’t have a break.” We have a new assistant principal this year. Mrs. Burkhalter was welcomed with open arms into her new position as one of the six APs at Bowie. From teaching the Web Mastering class, Mrs. Burkhalter has been moving on up through the ranks of the teaching community. “It’s been a smooth transition,” Mrs. Burkhalter said. “I have a lot of support from the principal and the other

District approves dual credit course fee Dual credit is a course at Bowie that challenges students academically and prepares them for college. Students would often consider whether or not to take AP or dual credit based on fees and testing. A difference between dual credit and AP courses was the cost. As of May 16, 2011, the Board of Trustees approved a change in district policy requiring that students who choose to take a dual credit class pay a $50 semester fee per course, allowing fee waivers for those applicable. Dual credit was a preferred choice for many students because all students had to do was pass the dual credit class with at least a 70 to get college credit. However, now AISD is charging $50 per course per semester. Dual credit English, a two semester course, would cost $100. Economics and Government, each a one semester course,

Some students might be discouraged by the new costs for dual credit. “TCC credits, despite popular belief, are transferable to any public school, and most private colleges,” Director of dual credit Southeast Campus, Michael Cinatl said. Although dual credit now has a fee, the number of students enrolled remains the same. During the spring semester last year, when dual credit was free, 168 students from Bowie High School were enrolled. This fall semester we have exactly 168 students from Bowie enrolled in dual credit classes. Despite the courses having a fee, students seem to still think it is important. “It was a disappointment but it’s understandable. It’s a college course. It’s still a lot cheaper than what we would have to pay if we were actually going to college,” Senior Heidi Fischer said.

You earn, they learn New anti-truancy program comes to AISD by: Claudia Catanzaro-Solis News Editor The bell rings. You’re walking down the hallway when you hear a student from your history class say that they’re going to ditch. Time to call Crime Stoppers. Arlington ISD, along with the Arlington Police Department, has partnered with Crime Stoppers to form a new antitruancy program called “You earn, they learn. Stop truancy.” “The Arlington Police Department was already teamed up with Crime Stoppers,” Campus Truancy Officer Derrick Talton said. “Now they involved truancy in it”. Anyone who notifies Crime Stoppers about an AISD student who is skipping class can earn a $20 reward. If the student is truant, the reward is $40. Texas law defines truancy as missing three days of school in four weeks or ten days of school in a six month period. Asking people to report truant students is not new, but the reward is. “I think the program is a good idea but I think it’s going to be hard to follow through on paper,” English teacher Shalon Griggs said. “I think logistically it still has problems.” You do not have to be an adult to report a truant student. Students may report their peers if they know they are skipping or truant. “If a friend is not doing what
they’re supposed to then I would turn them in,” Sophomore Lindsey Boyle said. Crime Stoppers is available by telephone at 817-468TIPS(8477) from 7am to midnight, or via text message. AISD hopes the program will help all the schools in the district with truancy. “It should improve truancy now that more people are involved and there’s a reward,” Officer Talton said.

Tha Carter IV by: Zana Gray Photographer It seems as though everyone has been looking forward to Lil Wayne’s new album, “Tha Carter IV,” to drop for months now. Luckily, for the major Lil Wayne or Young Money fans, the album was released after the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday at midnight (8/27/11). Since the release, there has been major buzz about it. There has been a range of opinions on the album. For example, some people agreed to it being too mainstream and others concluded that it’s probably the best album of our time. Right after the multigenre artist, published his 8th studio album, “I Am Not a Human Being,” he was sentenced to jail in New York City on March 8, 2010, for having a “loaded” gun on his tour bus in 2007. The album was soon released on October 12, 2010, leading to his release out of prison on Nov. 4, 2011. After Lil Wayne announced the upcoming release of the Carter IV to officially hit the stores on May 16, 2011, he decided to push the album release date to August 27, 2011. Lil Wayne explained that he did not want to follow an album he held in high regard so quickly with another, and decided to release two solo albums: the largely rock-themed Rebirth (2010) and I Am Not a Human Being (2010). Therefore, he planned for the Carter IV to be the best of the best. Word on the street, The Carter III, Lil Wayne’s previous album (2009), has said to be “realer” and more understandable than the Carter IV. The album includes two of the main hit songs, “How to Love” and “She Will” featuring Drake. The eighth season of The Office kicked off on Thursday, September 22nd. This was the first season without the Regional Manager of Dunder Mifflin Scranton, Steve Carell as Michael Scott. James Spader (Boston Legal) joined the cast for the much anticipated new season. He, however, didn’t stay in Scranton long. His character, Robert California, quickly moved up the food chain and became the new CEO of Sabre-Dunder Mifflin. What will happen in season 8? Will there be a season 9? Even if the future of The Office isn’t certain, it is a highly recommended show. The Office is on Thursdays at 8 o’clock on NBC. If you want to go back and watch the early days of The Office, many critics say seasons 2 and 3 were the best.
Survivor The 23rd season of Survivor sprung into action Wednesday, September 14th. It all started 11 years ago in the summer of 2000. It was the biggest show of the summer and has been a hit show ever since. Jeff Probst became the famous Survivor host and paved the way for all reality show hosts to come. He coined the phrases “The tribe has spoken” and “I’ll go tally the votes.” He became what we know today as the typical host. Almost every show since has copied something from Probst. Even with the success for Survivor the last 11 years, there have been a few changes to shake
up the game. The most recent change began last season and has carried over to the newest season. It is something called Redemption Island. The idea is that when a castaway is voted off the island, they are not permanently out of the game. They go straight to Redemption Island where they spend several nights alone. Once another castaway is voted off, the two battle for a spot on Redemption Island. At some point during the game, the person on Redemption Island will have their shot to get back into the game. This could be a huge benefit to the two contestants who are returning to play their third season of Survivor. Oscar “Ozzy” Lusth dominated challenges in his previous seasons (Cook Islands and Micronesia). He could swim like a fish, climb like a monkey, and do everything but play the Survivor mind games after being blindsided twice. Can he do better his third go around? Also returning was Benjamin Wade, better known as Coach in his previous two seasons
(Tocantins and Heroes v. Villains). He was the eccentric “Dragon Slayer” that couldn’t play the social game. Can he improve his game and win the million dollars? Coach and Ozzy join 16 strangers in Samoa. A country singer from Nashville, TennesseeWhitney Duncan, a local from Grand Prairie, Texas- Stacey Powell, even a student at Harvard Law and many other interesting characters are on the show. Who can outwit, outlast, and outplay to win the million dollars? Tune in Wednesdays at 7 o’clock on CBS.

Football team makes ESPN appearance by: Brittany Brinegar Sports Editor Lights flooded the field. Fans rapidly filled the stands. Cameras started to roll. The players patiently waited in the locker room, each anxious for their shot. The sound of the band signaled their release. The players charged the field, each one touching the anvil before stepping on the field. The cheerleaders cheered as the team ran through the giant helmet. The football team was ready to take on its biggest rival. On Saturday, September

Your seniors are the ones that are supposed to lead you, there’s a bunch but those guys are really doing a great job.” The football team runs a spread offense to move the ball around more, but is traditionally a running team. Coach Perry hopes for everything to come together this season.

24th, the football team faced off against one of its biggest rivals, Martin High School. It was one of the fiercest games of the year, and making it even more important was the fact it was a nationally televised game on ESPN. The game was tied at ten going into halftime. Unfortunately, starting quarterback Kolby Listenbee was hurt early in the second quarter and did not return to the game. The back-up quarterback, Keaton Perry came into the game and was injured in the second half. The Vols were without a quarterback for the rest of the game and were forced to run in a wildcat formation with two of its running-backs. The final score of the game was 39-22 in favor of Martin. “We’ve been on television three times already in the six years I’ve been here,” head football coach Kenny Perry said. “So that’s quite an accomplishment for kids. Just to get to play on TV that many times is obviously an honor. Anytime you can play on TV, you have to show what your program and school’s about.” Being televised not only showcases the football program but other programs as well. “It’s a chance to showcase your band, your drill team, your student body, Belles, cheerleaders, football program, and your fans,” Perry said. Last season ended with a record of 7-4 and, Coach Perry was looking for a way to improve for this season. “We’ve tried to play more complete games,” Perry said. “We were an undisciplined team with turnovers and penalties, and I think that really hurt us, just all around. We weren’t executing the way we needed to execute. So I think the big thing is that we played with more discipline this year.” There are 49 seniors on the varsity team playing their final year of high school football. “We have a lot of good kids obviously, some that are already committed to colleges- Kolby Listenbee, Russell Hansbrough, Jesse Rogers, Demonte Hood, Jaquirous Jackson,” Perry said.
“We need to make a run,” Perry said. “I think we have the kids and the character of the kids. You have to have some luck and some things help you, but I think we’ve got the kids to make that State Championship run.”
Riots not worth it by: Raven Haynes Copy Editor On the night of August 4th, 2011, police tailed Mark Duggan in a minicab, and in the act of arresting him, two shots rang out. Duggan lay dead, and his gun, unfired. The other bullet embedded itself in the police-radio of the the cop that shot Duggan. Yet, for all the witnesses present, it could not be said whether or not Duggan actually opened fire, and the bullet recovered from the radio was agreed upon to be police issue ammunition. The fatal shooting of 29-yearold Mark Duggan was the springboard for the rioting, theft and arson that ruled North London and other cities in England from August 6th to 9th. A temporarily peaceful march from Broadwater Farm to Tottenham Police Station began around 5:30 p.m. on August 6th, as the relatives, neighbors, and friends of Duggan called for answers and a high-ranking official to provide those answers. Nearly three hours later, two police cars were set on fire, and the anarchy spread similarly. Buildings and cars burned, rioters attacked. Meanwhile, the springboard for the outbreak of violence in Philadelphia, PA seemed to be little more than mob mentality. The incidences were random and ranged from teens attacking pedestrians on June 25th and July 30th, to widespread looting and violence from August 5th to 13th. These “flash mobs” brought down the wrath of the Mayor Michael Nutter and caused much of Philadelphia’s youth to be under a curfew. It cannot be said whether or not the riots in London were the inspiration for the impulsive, violent mobs in Philadelphia, but the results of both are clear. Roughly 3,000 people connected with the London riots have been arrested, and 5 people remain dead. On a smaller scale, over 50 people have been arrested in Philly. In each case, mostly young people heard about the riots and jumped straight on the bandwagon. A lot of the problems that come with making decisions as a high school student are related to feeling like because you’re in a large group, your actions are trivial and you can do what you please. For this mentality, though, the rioters have suffered. Regardless of how these kids ended up stealing or who was the one who started beating up that guy, the punishments and judgments in court rained down hard.

But sometimes rumors are circulated that either make students apprehensive of joining or keep them from joining altogether. These myths are what clubs like GSA and Drama Club loathe. So to disprove those rumors, well-known and stereotyped clubs around the school were asked the facts.

It was the first day of my senior year in high school. I was walking in the hall and I saw one of my friends wearing some sort of African tribal shirt that looked dated. Then I saw another one of my friends who had on a pair of candy cane Jordan14’s that came out in 1999. Those are definitely retro. What’s up with retro styles coming back? People are wearing retro boots, sweaters, ripped pants, shoes, hats, and jackets. Even though it seems to be a new trend, it’s still retro because of the style. Some celebrities, like rappers, are influencing people to wear retro clothing. These include Kanye West, Tyler the Creator, Wale, Drake, Chi Mcbride, Ludacris, Wiz Khalifa, Big Sean, Kid Cudi and many more. Another big thing that’s coming back is the denim button up shirt. It seems as though khaki jeans, trucker jackets and bleached jeans are coming back. What I’m starting to see more of on artists are these “snapbacks.” These are considered retro because they’ve been around for a while. I wear hats by a company called “Mitchell & Ness” that has been around since 1904. That’s 107 years that this company has been manufacturing hats. I think the retro comeback is a great thing. I like older shoes, clothes, and glasses. The retro comeback has made a big impact on the clothing industry. It’s influencing people to stop buying newer looking things, and start wearing their clothes that they’ve had for years. Clothing manufacturers are even starting to make retro clothes because that’s what the people want. Even if this trend dies out, I’ll still dress retro.

Ever since the movie Titanic came out, people have been intrigued by cruise lines; when you go on one, even around the Caribbean in the hot sun, you still feel a nagging sense of fear that you’ll be hit by an ice burg. That is why it’s the crew’s job to distract you and make your stay aboard as fun and memorable as they can. Whether you’re on the Ecstasy, Fantasy, or even the Conquest, the golden glass elevators will still look like polished crystal, the walls will still be made up of painted mosaics or marble, and the ceiling will still be made of glass so you can see the sky while lights shine from every surface in an arch of rainbows.
