The Breakdown Tennessee plays its first road contest of the season on Saturday in Baton Rouge against the LSU Tigers. Saturday’s game is the 31st meeting in the series, which Tennessee leads 20-7-3. The game kicks off at 2:30 p.m. Central (3:30 Eastern) and will be televised on CBS.

The Series  This week’s game is the second in SEC play for the Vols this year as well as the first trip to Baton Rouge for UT since a 30-27 overtime win on Sept. 26, 2005...the win also marked the first Monday night road game in Tennessee history, as the game was rescheduled because of Hurricane Katrina.  Tennessee owns a 20-7-3 edge in the all-time series, including a 8-3-2 record in Baton Rouge and an 11-2-1 mark in Knoxville...The Vols own the longest winning

streak in the series with 10 in a row over LSU from 1934-59.  LSU is the third Top 10 opponent the Vols have faced in 2010 (Oregon, Florida).  The last meeting overall between the two schools was in the 2007 SEC Championship Game, when eventual national champion LSU defeated the Vols 21-14 in Atlanta.

For Starters: OT, 1st Quarters and Returns Last Week: 32-29 win over UAB (2 OT)

 The Vols evened their record to 2-2 with a 32-29 win over UAB in double overtime...the win was the 16th consecutive over a Conference USA school for Tennessee since 1997 (Southern Miss, 44-20, Nov. 8).  The win snapped a two-game losing streak for UT and also improved the Vols to 5-0 all-time in overtime games at Neyland Stadium...Tennessee is now 9-2 alltime in OT games...the double-overtime game represented the longest game for UT since a four-OT win at Kentucky on Nov. 24, 2007.

 Fifteen true freshmen have seen action for the Vols

this season, which ranks third in the country.  That youth is especially seen on the offensive line, where Ja’Wuan James has started all four game and James Stone started against UAB.

First and Foremost

 Tennessee has been strong in the 1st half this season, outscoring opponents 59-27 before the half in their first four games...in contrast, opponents have outscored the Vols 81-53 after halftime.  UT has scored first in all four games this season, including scores on the first possession in three of the first four games (FG’s against UT Martin, Oregon, TD vs. UAB)...The Vols have also held their opponent scoreless on the first drive in each game.

Tennessee Media Policies The following is a list of media policies for the 2010 Tennessee football season. Members of the media are expected to adhere to these policies, as they are put in place to allow student-athletes adequate time to devote to their school work and their team commitments. It should be noted that true freshmen will not be available for interviews.

Interviews with Derek Dooley and the assistant coaches should be coordinated through Associate AD Jimmy Stanton. All player interview requests should be made through Associate SID John Painter or Graduate Assistant Andrew Lentz at least 24 hours in advance.

The Neyland-Thompson Sports Center is for studentathletes and Tennessee Athletics staff and members of the media should not be in the facility (outside of scheduled practices) unless by appointment through the office of media relations. All post-practice interviews will take place on Haslam Field, or in the case of an indoor practice, insde the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center.

A working space for media is available in Stokely Athletics Center adjacent to the media relations office.

Coach and Player Interview Opportunities

 Game Day All Tennessee post-game press conferences will be held in the Stokely Family Media Center, located in the northwest corner of Neyland Stadium near Gate 25. The press conference will begin with head coach Derek Dooley 10-15 minutes after each home game. Coach Dooley will be followed by selected players. A member of the Tennessee Media Relations staff will escort all media down to the media center when there are five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.  Sundays Game highlights from the previous day’s contest are available from the Derek Dooley show from 9-10 a.m. A system test will be made at 8:45 a.m. and there is no programming on open dates. Please credit IMG College/Vol Network for video use.

Head coach Derek Dooley will be available each Sunday evening for a teleconference beginning at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the previous game. Interested media should dial (212) 812-4494. The access code is 89348710 and Associate SID John Painter will moderate the call.

Coaching Notes

Head Coach Derek Dooley The Dooley Era Begins

Derek Dooley may own a rival’s pedigree, but to Tennessee fans he felt just like one of their own when the Vols introduced him as the school’s 22nd head coach in January.

Dooley, 42, came to UT after three seasons as head coach at Louisiana Tech, where he also served as athletics director since March 2008. He was the only athletics director serving as head football coach on the FBS level.

Dooley is the youngest son of Georgia legend Vince Dooley, who coached the Bulldogs for 25 seasons and claimed six league crowns and the 1980 national title.

Dooley never accepted the predetermined path to success. He played his college football at Virginia, turning down scholarship offers elsewhere to walk on and later earn his own scholarship from Cavaliers head coach George Welsh.

Then after a successful start to the legal profession, Dooley switched gears and returned to his love of football. Four short years later, he latched onto the staff of Nick Saban at LSU and moved into the fast lane of the SEC. After five successful seasons that included the 2003 national title, Dooley moved with Saban to the NFL’s Miami Dolphins.

Dooley was named to his first head coaching position by Louisiana Tech in December 2006, and immediately began laying the foundation for future success. Included in his 17-20 overall record was an 8-5 mark in 2008 highlighted by the school’s first postseason victory in 30 years at the Independence Bowl. Tech finished second in the WAC that season and played in a bowl game for only the third time since joining the major college ranks in 1989.

The Louisiana Sports Writers’ Association named him 2008 Coach of the Year.

Head Coaching Debuts

Derek Dooley is Tennessee’s 22nd head coach and on Sept. 4 became the 18th to win his first game as Vols skipper. Overall, Tennessee head coaches are 18-4 all-time in their first games. Gen. Robert R. Neyland coached the Vols during three separate tenures and thus had two additional “first” games. He won all three contests, improving the total number to 20-4.

Coaching Prowess

Head coach Derek Dooley’s staff at Tennessee has a proven track record-eight of his assistants have coaching experience in one of the BCS conferences, five have coached in the NFL and three have experienced the formiddable SEC. Baggett, Chaney, Hiestand, Smith and Wylie spent a combined 24 years coaching in the NFL with eight different teams-- the Baltimore Ravens, Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, Houston Oilers, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets and St. Louis Rams.

UT’s assistant coaching staff has a combined 66 years of coaching experience in all six BCS automatic qualifying conferences. The Vols’ assistant coaches have coached in the bowl games that now comprise the BCS a total of 10 times and boast coaching experience in 59 total bowl games-- including the Super Bowl.

Noting the Staff Chaney, Thompson Return

Offensive coordinator Jim Chaney and linebackers coach Lance Thompson are in their second years in Knoxville. Both joined Tennessee’s staff in 2009 and were retained by first-year head coach Derek Dooley.

Chaney, arrived on The Hill after three seasons in the NFL with the St. Louis Rams. He was most notably the mastermind of a stellar Purdue offense from 19972005, during which time the Boilermakers ranked inside the top 10 nationally in total offense six times.

Super Bowl XLIV winning quarterback Drew Brees played for Chaney during his tenure in West Lafeyette, and the pair led Purdue to the Big Ten Championship and a Rose Bowl berth in 2000.

Thompson came to Rocky Top via Tuscaloosa, where he served on Nick Saban’s staff from 200708. His coaching resume is overflowing--Thompson has been a member of two national championships staffs, has a pair of SEC titles, two ACC championships and a Conference USA divisonal winner.

Smith Comes Home

Rounding out Derek Dooley’s staff was former Tennessee standout Chuck Smith. The Los Angeles native coaches the Vols’ defensive line.

Best known for his work with some of the biggest names in pro football, Smith spent last season with the New York Jets No. 1 ranked pass defense. Over the past five seasons, Smith has coached and mentored nearly 60 NFL players, including Albert Haynesworth, Robert Ayers and Shaun Ellis-- all three former Vols. He also worked with Michael Johnson, Osi Umenyiora, Derek Morgan and Bart Scott.

During his career in the NFL, Smith recorded 58.5 sacks in nine seasons and served as a captain during the Atlanta Falcons’ lone Super Bowl appearance after the 1998 season. He was later selected the “Best Defensive Lineman in Team History,” by Falcons’ fans.

On The Hill, Smith started at right end for two seasons. He helped the Big Orange to a win in the 1990 Sugar Bowl and earned All-SEC honors in 1991.

Wilcox on a Rising Star

According to a recent Sports Illustrated article, Tennessee defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox is one of college football’s best assistant coaches. The article, compiled by Andy Staples and Stewart Mandel, predicts Wilcox’s career is on the rise, citing the 49-4 record Boise State amassed during his four year tenure with the Broncos.

The General The Proverbial, Perpetual Yardstick

One of the greatest coaches in the history of the game of football, Gen. Robert Reese Neyland is still, and will most likely always be, the yardstick by which all Tennessee football coaches are measured. For 21 years, he led the Big Orange to win after win and championship after championship. His 173 wins, seven conference titles and four national championships set the bar at one of the nation’s finest football institutions.

According to UT legend Gus Manning, no one summed up Neyland and his coaching ability better than Wallace Wade: “He could take his and beat yours or take yours and beat his.” -- Wallace Wade, Alabama and Duke head coach and Neyland rival.

1. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win.

Team Notes vs. LSU Where Youth is Served

 Twelve true freshman played in the Vols’ opening game against UT Martin, including Ju’Wuan James starting on the offensive line.  11 other true freshmen played vs. UT Martin: Tyler Bray, Brent Brewer, Channing Fugate, Zach Fulton, Justin Hunter, Corey Miller, Rajion Neal, John Propst, Da’Rick Rogers, Jacques Smith and James Stone.  Miller made his first career start at defensive end against Oregon while Michael Palardy saw his first action...playing for the first time versus Florida were Raiques Crump and Dontavis Sapp.  James has started all four games on the offensive line, while Stone started at left guard vs. UAB.  Through three weeks of the season, the Vols rank tied for third in most true freshmen on the field:  Freshman Playing in NCAA Div.  Simms to Moore (and More): QB Matt Simms threw for 245 yards and three TD...Denarius Moore was on the receiving end on two of those scoring plays, while Zach Rogers’ 72-yard TD reception in the 1st quarter was the longest play for the Vols since LaMarcus Coker’s 87-yard TD run at Vanderbilt on Sept. 30, 2006...the Simms-to-Rogers strike was also the longest pass play for the Vols since an 84-yard TD pass from Erik Ainge to Robert Meacham at Memphis in 2006.  Tying the Record: CB Prentiss Waggner returned an interception for a touchdown in the 2nd quarter, marking his 2nd INT return for a TD in 2010...this ties the school record accomplished seven times by six players, most recently by Eric Berry in 2008.

Injury Update

Nine Vols with Diplomas Ranks Third

 Nine Vols are suiting up this season as graduates of Tennessee. Chad Cunningham, Daniel Lincoln, Cody Pope, Nick Reveiz, Jarrod Shaw, Luke Stocker, Victor Thomas, LaMarcus Thompson and Tyler Wolf all earned their college degrees before the 2010 football season.  With nine active graduates slated for action this season, Tennessee is third in the nation behind Boston College (14) and Auburn (11). Kansas State, Virginia Tech and UCF are tied with eight.

Watch Lists

 Luke Stocker is on the watch list for the John Mackey Award, given annually to the nation’s best tight end. Chris Walker is one of 36 candidates for the Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award... among many other awards, Eric Berry won the Jim Thorpe Award last season and was a finalist for both the Bronko Nagurski and Lott Trophy awards. He was also a consensus All-America for a second time.

 The Vols were without nine starters at one point during Saturday’s game vs. UAB...RB Tauren Poole (thigh) was limited to six carries, and two starters on defense, CB Art Evans (knee) and LB Herman Lathers (ankle) did not play.  Two starters on the offensive line: LG JerQuari Schofield (foot) and C Cody Pope (stinger) did not play against UAB...Pope also missed the game vs.

Florida.  WR Gerald Jones is questionable to return at LSU this weekend after missing the last three games after suffering a hand injury vs. UT Martin.

 This season, the Tennessee game day tradition of the Vol Walk celebrates its 20th anniversary, as then-head coach Johnny Majors started the official Saturday march to Neyland Stadium prior to the Alabama game on Oct. 20, 1990.  In 1989, the team walked unofficially to the games from Bill Gibbs Dormitory. That phenomenon caught on with fans...however, the first publicized and announced Vol Walk did not take place until the Alabama game in 1990.  The start of the Vol Walk moved this year to the corner of Volunteer Boulevard and Lake Loudoun Boulevard to allow fans in the C-8 parking area to welcome the team...the team members will then gather at Circle Park, where they will pay homage to the Torchbearer and the spirit of service to others that it represents...following the team’s visit to the Volunteer Statue, the team will proceed down Peyton Manning Pass, and then left onto Phillip Fulmer Way.  The Vol Walk begins 2 hours and 15 minutes before each home Tennessee football game.

 Since coming to Knoxville, Vols head coach Derek Dooley created the Vol For Life program, a comprehensive player enhancement program to develop to person outside of football.  Former Vols defensive back Andre Lott is the Vol for Life/Character Education Coordinator and works with UT’s football student-athletes to further their personal growth through the newly created program that centers on four areas: character education, life skills, character development and spiritual growth.

A New Decade

 Tennessee has enjoyed its share of success to open every 10-year period, being named national champions in 1940 and 1950. Team Notes vs. LSU The UT/LSU Breakdown Continued

 LSU has won three of four in the series dating back to the 2001 SEC Championship Game and four of six since a 38-31 OT win for the Tigers in 2000...Tennessee and LSU met in both the 2001 and 2007 SEC Championship Games, and in a seven-year span from 2001-07, the league title game featured either the Vols or Tigers in five of those seven years (UT 2001-04-07; LSU 2001-03-05-07).  Tennessee ranks third in all-time SEC title game appearances with five, and LSU ranks fourth with four.  The Vols have won three of the last four meetings in Baton Rouge since 1989.  Saturday marks the first game vs. an SEC West team this season...Tennessee has lost four consecutive games vs. SEC West foes since 10/25/08 at Alabama...UT has also lost four in a row on the road vs. the SEC West...the last win for UT vs. a Western opponent was on 10/18/08 vs. Mississippi State (34-3), and the last road win at an SEC West school was on 10/13/07, also vs. the MSU Bulldogs, a 33-21 win in Starkville...since the 21-point comeback win at LSU on 9/26/05 (W, 30-27), UT is 2-6 on the road vs. SEC West teams.

• Tennessee begins its 2010 road slate Saturday afternoon at LSU...For just the ninth time in Tennessee football history and just the third since 1978, the Vols opened their season with four consecutive home games, including games against UT-Martin (Sept. 4, W 50-0), Oregon (Sept. 11, L, 48-13), Florida (Sept. 18, L, 31-17) and UAB (Sept, 25, W, 32-29, 2OT)...Tennessee holds a 27-11 (.711) record in those games. In two years (1915 & 1977), the Vols defended their home field for a UT-record five games before hitting the road.

• Tennessee is 31-23 on the road since 2001, including a 9-5 mark in away October games.

 Tennessee vs. LSU: Last 5 Games Dec. 1, 2007 - LSU 21, UT 14 (SEC Championship)

 LSU defeated Tennessee for the SEC Championship in Atlanta 2114...the Tigers turned a pair of fourth-quarter interceptions into the go-ahead touchdown and a clinching defensive stop...early in the 4th quarter, Jonathan Zenon intercepted Vols QB Erik Ainge and returned it 18 yards for a score...Tennessee drove into the LSU red zone late in the game, but Darry Beckwith intercepted Ainge to end the lastchance drive...eight of the 12 UT drives lasted six plays or fewer, and while the Vols defense allowed 464 yards, only 13 points were scored by the TIgers offense...Ainge finished 20-of-40 for 249 yards, two TD’s and two INT’s, while the Vols managed only 99 yards on the ground.

Nov. 4, 2006 - LSU 28, UT 24 (Knoxville)

 After Tennessee took a three-point lead midway through the 4th quarter, LSU and QB JaMarcus Russell answered, as the Tigers’ QB connected with WR Early Doucet on a 4-yard TD pass with nine seconds left at Neyland Stadium...the Tennessee loss clinched the SEC East for Florida, and Jonathan Crompton relieved Erik Ainge (ankle) midway through the second quarter and finished 11-for-24 for 183 yards, including two TDs and one INT.

Sept. 26, 2005 - UT 30, LSU 27 (OT) (Baton Rouge)

 Feeding off of an emotional month in which hurricanes Katrina and Rita ravaged the Bayou and forced this game to be played on a Monday, LSU exploded to a 21-0 halftime lead thanks to three Vols turnovers...Tennessee’s resilience was lead by former LSU QB Rick Clausen, who captained the second-half comeback by rallying the Vols to a 24-24 tie in regulation, including a 17-point fourth quarter.... in overtime, LSU’s Colt David kicked a 31-year field goal before Gerald Riggs Jr. took over...Riggs caught a 10-yard pass, rushed for 14 yards, and gave Tennessee the win with a 1-yard touchdown plunge.

Dec. 8, 2001 - LSU 31, UT 20 (SEC Championship Game)

 One week after the Vols defeated Florida 34-32 in Gainesville to enter the national title picture (a game rescheduled because of the events of Sept. 11), the Vols allowed 21 fourth-quarter points and LSU claimed the SEC title 31-20...

QB Matt Mauck came off the bench for an injured Rohan Davey and scored on touchdown runs of 4 and 13 yards -- the first two rushing TD’s of his career...the win gave the Tigers their first SEC title game win (in their first appearance) and dropped the Vols to 2-1 in the league title games...Tennessee was held to 52 yards rushing in the loss.

Sept. 29, 2001 - UT 26, LSU 18 (Knoxville)

 The Kelley Washington show was featured in Knoxville, as the former quarterback turned professional baseball player turned Vols receiver caught 11 passes for a record 256 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown pass from Casey Clausen in the third quarter...LSU led 7-6 at the half, but the Vols countered with 20 secondhalf points and took a 26-7 lead...LSU rallied in the last 11 minutes, but a last-ditch pass into the end zone fell incomplete, giving the Vols their 11th win in their last 12 vs. LSU at Neyland Stadium.

Connections...  UT head coach Derek Dooley served in several different capacities at LSU from 2000-04 in a fiveyear stint that included a national championship in 2003. From 2000-02, Dooley served as LSU’s recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach before mentoring the running backs and special teams units in 2003. In 2004, he was named assistant head coach.  Defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator Terry Joseph and linebackers coach Lance Thompson also coached at LSU. Joseph spent the 2006 season as a graduate assistant under defensive coordinator and current Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini. Thompson spent the 2002-03 seasons at LSU serving as the assistant head coach in charge of recruiting and tight ends.  LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis spent 14 seasons as the defensive coordinator at Tennessee, including the Vols' national championship run in 1998. The Vols won two SEC Championships during Chavis' tenure and ranked as one of the SEC's top defenses nearly every year.  Tennessee has five players from Louisiana, which is tied for the fifth most from any state. Two of those five hail from Baton Rouge -- sophomore linebacker Herman Lathers (Scotlandville H.S.) and sophomore offensive tackle Dallas Thomas (Scotlandville H.S.). All five are starters: Lathers, sophomore defensive back Janzen Jackson (Lake Charles/Barbe H.S.), senior offensive guard Jarrod Shaw (Lafayette/Northside H.S.), Thomas and sophomore defensive back Prentiss Waggner (Clinton/Clinton H.S.).  LSU senior punter Josh Jasper and freshman linebacker Justin Maclin attended the same high school as Tennessee senior defensive tackle Minor Bowens at Ridgeway in Memphis. LSU’s only other Tennessean is sophomore offensive tackle Alex Hurst from Bartlett.  UT sophomore linebacker Nigel MitchellThornton and LSU senior linebacker Kelvin Sheppard both attended Stephenson H.S. in Stone Mountain, Ga. Inside the Numbers (Offense)

 Tennessee’s opponents have yet to lose a coin toss this season (4-for-4 starting games and once in overtime), but that’s been a lucky break for the Vols.

UT has scored on three of its four game-opening possessions, including Saturday’s TD march against UAB. The two other tallies were field goals, as was the opening period of overtime.  The Vols have outscored their opponents 36-10 in the opening period. That’s 32 percent of the team’s scoring in the first 15 minutes, thanks in part to 47 percent of the rushing yards (276 of 585) and 37 percent of the total offense (527 of 1,445).  The average starting position this season has been the 28.3-yard line. The Vols own the following offensive rankings in the SEC: 8th in scoring, 7th total offense, 10th rushing and 7th passing.  Tennessee’s third-down converstion rate stands at 19.0 percent (11-of-58). Only San Jose State at 16.3 percent (8-of-49) is lower in major college football.

But the Vols did rally from an 0-of-10 start Saturday to convert two of their last five third downs tries.  The Vols posted a season-high rushing total of 332 yards in the season opener vs. UT Martin and a seasonlow 29 yards on the ground vs. Florida.  Through four games, the Vols already have 22 plays of 20+ yards, which is ahead of the team’s pace from each of the last three seasons. Here is the breakdown:

TD at Memphis earlier that same year.  Simms also found Denarius Moore for a 25-yard touchdown that ended Saturday’s contest. The play came on UT’s first snap of the second overtime.  Tyler Bray (Fr., Kingsburg, Calif.) is the reserve QB. He has played in one game, finishing 3-of-6 for 24 yards vs. UT Martin. Two of his three completions were to TE Luke Stocker.

Running Backs

 Tennessee rushed for 332 yards in the season opener vs. UT Martin, the highest total for the team on the ground since a 380-yard effort in the season opener vs.

Western Kentucky in 2009.  Tauren Poole (Jr., Toccoa, Ga.) missed most of Saturday’s game against UAB with a thigh injury. He leads the Vols with 318 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 56 carries, but had just six attempts for 23 yards against the Blazers. Poole still ranks eighth among SEC rushing leaders at 79.5 yards per game (5.7 per carry).  Poole opened the season with 110 rushing yards and two TDs against UT Martin, and then added 162 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries against Oregon.  Poole rushed for 111 yards in the first quarter vs. Oregon, and his 140 first-half rushing yards ranked as the 7th-most by a Vols running back in the first half all-time.

Poole is in his first season as the UT starter.  David Oku (So., Midwest City, Okla.) has gained 142 yards on 26 carries (5.5 per carry). Oku led the Vols with 24 yards rushing vs. Florida and 33 vs. UAB. His season-high total of 77 yards on six carries came vs. UT Martin and including a 44-yard TD scamper.  Fullback Kevin Cooper (Sr., Chattanooga) is entering his third season as the starter at that positon.

Cooper has started 23 games over the last three seasons. He caught two passes in each of this year’s first three games (6 for 39 yards in 2010).  Rajion Neal (Fr., Tyrone, Ga.) rushed nine times for 79 yards in his debut vs. UT Martin. In 2010, Neal has 101 yards on 15 carries, an average of 6.7.

Stock(er) Market Rising (Tight Ends)

 Senior tight end Luke Stocker (Berea, Ky.) has improved his numbers each season since he began his playing career at UT began in 2007. He finished strong in 2009 and increased his final totals from his sophomore season by 16 receptions, 250 yards, and five touchdowns.  After posting just three receptions through the first two games of 2010, Stocker has nine receptions for 97 yards over his last two contests.

 Mychal Rivera (Soph., Valencia, Calif.) provides depth at the tight end position, having caught three passes in the early going for 13 yards. He also handled a kickoff in the opener against UT Martin.

Quarterbacks

Rebuilt Line (Offensive Line)

 Matt Simms (Jr., Franklin Lakes, N.J./El Camino [Calif.] CC) ranks fifth in the SEC in passing yards per game at 209.0. He is coming off a career-high three-TD performance against UAB that included 245 passing yards against no interceptions. His season-high of 259 yards passing came vs. Florida.  Included in Saturday’s double-overtime effort was a 72-yard TD strike to Zach Rogers -- longest play at Tennessee since LaMarcus Coker ran 89 yards for a score at Vanderbilt in 2006, and longest pass play since Erik Ainge hit Robert Meachem for an 84-yard

 Tennessee’s linemen had made a combined three career starts heading into the 2010 season. Center Cody Pope (Jr., Julian, Calif.), offensive tackles Dallas Thomas (So., Baton Rouge, La.) and Ju’Wuan James (Fr., Suwanee, Ga.) and offensive guard JerQuari Schofield (Fr., Aiken, SC) all made their starting lineup debut in the 2010 opener. Jarrod Shaw was the only starting offensive lineman with prior experience (3 starts in 2009).  Injuries have been an issue, as Pope was unable to play against either Florida or UAB. Sophomore juco

transfer Darin Gooch (So., Reno, Nev./Butte Col.) made his first career starts at center.  Schofield left the Florida game with a foot injury and did not play against UAB. With Schofield out, true freshman James Stone (Fr., Nashville) made his first collegiate start against the Blazers. And another true freshman, Zach Fulton (Fr., Homewood, Ill.) has seen reserve playing time in three of the four games.  The Vols allowed a combined three sacks in their first two games but have allowed 11 in the last two.

Receivers

 Senior Denarius Moore (Sr., Tatum, Tex.) leads the team with 14 receptions, 220 yards, and four receiving TDs (five overall). Moore is coming off his second career 2-TD game (Memphis 2009). He is the active UT leader in career touchdowns with 14 (13 receiving, 1 rushing).  Moore also is tied for the 2010 SEC lead with four receiving TDs, joining Kentucky’s Chris Matthews.  Although he has been sidelined with a hand injury the last two games, Gerald Jones (Sr., Oklahoma City, Okla.) is approaching the top 10 in two main receiving categories in the UT record books:  Career Receptions - Tennessee 8.  In place of the injured senior Jones, sophomore Zach Rogers (Nashville) started the last three games.

Rogers leads the team with an 18.3-yard receiving average, is second on the squad with 183 receiving yards and third in catches with 10. His 72-yard catch and run of a Matt Simms pass resulted in a Vols touchdown Saturday against UAB. It was Tennessee’s longest play since LaMarcus Coker ran 89 yards for a score at Vanderbilt in 2006, and longest pass play since Erik Ainge hit Robert Meachem for an 84-yard TD at Memphis earlier that same year.  True freshman Da’Rick Rogers (Calhoun, Ga.) has also seen playing time, catching a pair of passes Saturday for 16 yards. Rogers has three catches this season for 25 yards. He also rushed for 21 yards on his first career carry (vs. Oregon).  Four UT receivers posted at least 40 receiving yards against Florida, led by 60 yards from freshman Justin Hunter (Fr., Virginia Beach, Va.) on three receptions.

Hunter’s first career reception was for 31 yards vs.

Oregon and set up a Tennessee touchdown.  Hunter first career score came in that game against the Gators, a 35-yard strike from Matt Simms.  Hunter also had a busy summer on the track, a sport in which he has found national success. In June, he won the long jump at the USA Junior National Championships with a leap of 25 feet, 10.75 inches.  Hunter later represented the U.S. at the IAFF World Junior Track & Field Championships, where he finished sixth.

Notes on Defense Defense Notes

 The UT defense has held opponents scoreless on their opening drives in 1st half...Florida kicked a field goal on the Gators’ first possession in the 2nd half, but the Vols have held opponents scoreless in the opening drive after halftime in the three other contests this season (7 of 8 total first possessions in 1st or 2nd half without an opponent score).  The Vols have scored two defensive TD’s this season, both on interception returns by Prentiss Waggner... this equals the team total for the entire 2009 season (INT returns by Wes Brown and Chris Walker).  Ten freshmen have seen time on defense for Tennessee through four games: Eric Gordon, Brent Brewer, Jerod Askew, John Propst, Jacques Smith, Corey Miller, Joseph Ayres, Dontavis Sapp, Raiques Crump and Arthur Jeffery.  The Vols have forced six turnovers in four games.  Opponents were 7x7 inside the red zone in the first three games (5 TD, 2 FG)...vs. UAB, the Vols limited the Blazers to three scores in five red-zone trips.

Defensive Line

 Senior defensive end Chris Walker (Memphis) has started all four games this season and has 16 career starts, including the last nine consecutive...Walker has 22 tackles (one for loss) this season and led the team with 6.0 sacks in 2010.  Gerald Williams (Sr., Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.) made his third career start and first in 2010 vs. UAB...Williams had five tackles vs. the Blazers and is tied for the team lead with 3.5 tackles for loss...he leads the team with 2.0 sacks and also has 16 tackles in four games... junior and USC transfer Malik Jackson (Northridge, Calif.) has started of three of four games and has nine tackles.  Montori Hughes (Soph., Murfreesboro) has started all four games at defensive tackle and leads UT with four quarterback hurries...he has also recorded 11 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss (tied for team-high total),a four-yard sack, and has broken up two pass attempts...

Victor Thomas (Sr., Olive Branch, Miss.) has started three of four games at defensive tackle.  Freshman Corey Miller (Wellford, S.C.) started on the defensive line vs. Oregon and recorded tacklefor-loss vs. UAB...other freshman seeing time on the defensive line this season include Joseph Ayres (Knoxville) and Jacques Smith (Ooltewah)...Smith recorded two quarterback hurries vs. UAB and has seven tackles, including two for loss.  Others who have played for the Vols this season on the D-line include Willie Bohannon (So., Mobile, Ala.), Stephen Fowlkes (Soph., College Park, Ga.), and Rae Sykes (Jr., Alcoa)...Sykes recorded two tackles, half of a tackle-for-loss, and a quarterback hurry in the win over UAB.

Linebackers

 Nick Reveiz (Sr., Farragut) led the team with 14 tackles with UAB, becoming the first player to record 10-plus tackles in three consecutive games since Jerod Mayo recorded 10 tackles in each of the last four games in 2007.  The former walk-on turned scholarship player has become one of the Vols’ most productive players, as Reveiz had led Tennessee in tackles in three consecutive games since the Oregon contest, and the 14-tackle effort vs. UAB tied his career-high total, set the week before vs. Florida... his 39 tackles lead the Vols this year...Reveiz missed the last nine games of 2009 after suffering a season-ending knee injury vs. Ohio.  LaMarcus Thompson (Sr., Lithonia, Ga.) has started all four games this season...Thompson recorded a career-high eight tackles vs. UAB and has 19 this season, including 3.5 for loss (tied for team high)... he has 16 career starts for the Vols.  Herman Lathers (Soph., Baton Rouge, La.) recorded

13 tackles in the first three games (all starts), but missed the UAB game with an ankle injury...the 2009 All-Freshman SEC performer recorded a season-high seven tackles vs. Florida...Savion Frazier (Sr., Woodbridge, Va.) started at outside linebacker vs. UAB and recorded seven tackles, including three for loss, a season-high in TFL’s for any UT players this season...

Carolina.  Austin Johnson (Jr., Hickory, NC) has enjoyed a productive season since converting back to defense following two seasons at fullback...Johnson recorded a career-best nine tackles vs. UAB and has 19 in 2010...he has also posted an interception and fumble recovery... his two takeaways are tied with Prentiss Waggner for the team high...his interception vs. UT Martin happened in his first career game on defense.  Daryl Vereen (Jr., Charlotte, NC) has played in all four games, recording seven tackles and two quarterback hurries...others seeing time at linebacker this season include Greg King (Soph., Memphis), Nigel Mitchell-Thornton (Soph., Stone Mountain, Ga.) and Shane Reveiz (Jr., Farragut), as well as true freshmen Raiques Crump (Birmingham, Ala.) and John Propst (Hoover, Ala.).

Secondary

 Prentiss Waggner (Soph., Clinton, La.) leads the team with two interceptions, both of which he has returned for TD’s, tying the school record (accomplished seven times by six players, most recently by Eric Berry in 2008...Waggner scored on a 9-yard return vs. UAB and a 54-yard return vs. UT Martin...he has 23 tackles and is credited with two pass breakups this season, which is his first full year as a starter at safety.  Janzen Jackson (Soph., Lake Charles, La.) starts at the other safety position...Jackson recorded a career-high nine tackles vs. Florida and has broken up two passes in 2010...despite his sophomore status, Jackson’s 13 career starts ranks fourth on the current Vols’ defense, trailing only Chris Walker (16), LaMarcus Thompson and Art Evans (both 15), as he started nine games as a freshman in 2009.  Converted receiver Marsalis Teague (Soph., Paris) has started three games at cornerback and broke up three passes vs. UAB, including a critical play in overtime in the corner of the end zone...Teague has 16 tackles in four games and his five pass breakups lead the Vols...Teague started five games at receiver for UT in 2009.  Art Evans (Jr., Lakeland, Fla.) started the first three games at cornerback but missed the UAB game with a knee injury...Evans started 12 games in 2009 for the Vols and has 15 career starts...freshman Eric Gordon (Nashville) started vs. UAB and also started at cornerback vs. UT Martin...Gordon has 11 tackles in four games and has broken up one pass.  Brent Brewer (Fr., Tyrone, Ga.) has played primarily on special teams...Brewer is not your typical freshman...he signed a professional baseball contract in 2006 with the Milwaukee Brewers out of Sandy Creek High School in Georgia, turning his back on a football career at Florida State...the second-round draft pick spent five years as a shortstop in the Brewers’ organization.  Others seeing time in the secondary in 2010 include senior Tyler Wolf (Cookeville), who recorded five tackles vs. UT Martin at two vs. UAB, Anthony Anderson (Jr., Knoxville), and true freshman Dontavis Sapp (Valdosta, Ga.).

Cunningham Climbing Charts

 Chad Cunningham (Sr., Dawsonville, Ga.) had his best outing of 2010 in the Vols battle with Florida. In that contest, Cunningham averaged a season-best 44.4 yards on five punts...he punted a season-high nine times (379 yards, 42.1 avg.) vs. UAB and tied his season long with a 54-yard punt (equaled vs. Oregon).  His nine punts vs. UAB were one shy of his careerhigh total (10 vs. Auburn in 2008)...Cunningham has six punts inside the 20-yard line season and halfway to his career-high total of 12, accomplished in 2009.  Cunningham’s career average of 41.8 yards per punt ranks seventh on the Tennessee career list.

SEC Instant Replay 2010 The Coaches’ Challenge

The head coach may challenge the ruling of any reviewable play. He retains a challenge if his initial challenge is successful and thus results in a reversal by the replay official. The head coach will then have a single challenge that he may use anytime during the game if his team has not used all its timeouts. Thus a team may have a total of two challenges in the game, but only if the first results in a reversal of the on-field ruling.

The Source

All reviewable video comes direct from either the television network broadcasting the game or other TV production facilities that meet established conference standards. The SEC has used instant replay since 2005.

The Process

Each SEC football stadium has a secured replay booth equipped with the HD Instant Replay system provided by XOS Digital. Three individuals work in the booth for the duration of the game: 1. Replay Official, 2. Communicator, 3. Technician. The Replay Official and the Communicator are selected and assigned by the Conference Office.

A live HD video feed is sent directly to the replay booth from the TV truck. The Technician watches the feed on an input monitor while recording it into the XOS Digital Replay System. The Technician also marks the beginning of each play while the Communicator marks all incoming replays.

Each play and subsequent replay then appears on a touch screen in front of the Replay Technician. As the Technician and the Communicator mark the incoming video, each view will appear as a small picture on the computer touch screen. At any time, the Replay Technician can touch the thumbnail and immediately send that play or replay to the Replay Official.

With the Communicator’s assistance, the Replay Official can quickly jump between replays while playing back the video. All replay video navigation is done via a jog shuttle remote controlled by the Replay Official. All video is viewed on an HD monitor that sits in front of the Replay Official. The touch screen is only used to select the replays and to log specific play data in the event a call is overturned.

While all plays are reviewed between the whistle and the beginning of the next play, the Replay Official can stop play on the field by using a pager system. Five onfield officials wear pagers. If play is stopped the Referee announces on the stadium PA microphone that play has been stopped so the previous play can be reviewed.

The Referee then proceeds to the sideline headset, which provides direct communication to the Replay Official in the booth. Once the play has been reviewed, the Replay Official notifies the Referee, who then announces the decision on the stadium PA system.

The Best Just Got Better

The Home of the Vols just got a makeover, transforming one of college football’s meccas into an aesthetic masterpiece. The concrete walls that used to hold up the west side of Neyland Stadium were replaced with brick. Below the press box, six new panels display some of the finest to ever don the Orange and White-- Al Wilson, Gen. Robert R. Neyland, Reggie White, Peyton Manning, Johnny Majors and Doug Atkins.

Most noticeable from the outside are the approximately 700,000 bricks laid since December that totally transformed the look of the stadium’s north and west sides. Standing in the middle of that transformation is the majestic Gate 21 plaza area.

“Gate 21 is the focal point of the stadium,” said David Elliott, assistant athletics director for event management. “It’s our marquee entrance. Gate 21 typically has brought in 30,000 to 35,000 people on a game-bygame basis. It is a stunning, stunning entrance.”

Six lofty archways dominate the entrance, which doubles during the work week as a key campus transportation hub. No doubt the traffic on game days is just as hectic.

Adjacent to the Gate 21 plaza is another change, the new amphitheater at the corner of Phillip Fulmer Way and Andy Holt Avenue. The Vol Network’s Kickoff Call-In Show takes place there, sporting spiffy new digs after spending years on a make-shift platform in front of a worn down hillside.

Just inside Gate 21, the Tennessee Official Team Shop is open for business six days a week under management of the UT Bookstore. Four other souvenir locations are located throughout the stadium, including one in an exclusive new seating area.

Tennessee Terrace

The Tennessee Terrace now occupies the west upper deck, with 1,800 individual chair-back seats and a climate-controlled concourse featuring new restroom and concession areas. All of the stadium’s high-end concessions are available to Tennessee Terrace patrons, and those individuals also have the added bonus of sitting on the home sideline after the Vols switched back to the west for the first time since 1992.

Plans call for stadium renovations to take a break over the next two years and resume in December 2012. That should allow for a more normal maintenance schedule, including structural painting projects on the stadium’s exterior that are first in line for

Design work throughout the entire Master Plan renovations has been by McCarty Holsaple McCarty Architects/Ross Bryan Associates. Contractor for this portion of the project was Blaine Construction.

Unveiling of the Neyland Statue

Perhaps the most anticipated improvement to the Home of the Vols will not be unveiled until the Nov. 13 homecoming date with Mississippi. As Vols young and old return to The Hill to see the Big Orange take on the Rebels, they will see a twice-life-size statue of the stadium’s namesake, Gen. Robert R. Neyland.

The statue will meet its permanent resting place between gates 16 and 17.

Sideline Change for 2010 Season

When Tennessee kicked off the 2010 season on Sept. 4 against UT Martin, the Vols did so on a new sideline. The Vols called the west sideline home until 1994, when the SEC began prohibiting student seating directly behind a visiting team bench.

In order to meet SEC guidelines, the athletics department approached the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs in December to discuss making modest adjustments to student seating assignments. UT Athletics in conjunction with Student Affairs and SGA chose to add additional lower level student seating in sections J and K to offset the seat adjustments needed in section D to give students a more cohesive student section.

When at Neyland Stadium...

The Vols return home Oct. 23 to play current No. 1-ranked Alabama. Tennessee looks to even the alltime series record in Knoxville, which the Crimson Tide lead 21-20-1. UT has won five of the last seven games played at Neyland Stadium.

KNOXVILLE - The 10th-ranked Florida Gators beat the Tennessee Volunteers 31-17 on Saturday for their sixth consecutive win in the 40-game series between the Southeastern Conference rivals.

It’s the first time Florida has won three consecutive in Knoxville after having chances to do so in 1990, 1998 and 2004.

Tennessee (1-2, 0-1) tied the game at 10 with a 49-yard touchdown pass from Matt Simms to Denarius Moore with 8:59 in the third quarter. Simms completed 19 of 31 for two touchdowns and a pair of turnovers.

Florida appeared stopped on the next drive until Meyer called for a fake punt on fourthand-6. Omarius Hines ran 36 yards to keep the drive alive, and John Brantley eventually connected with Frankie Hammond on a 7-yard touchdown pass.

The Vols seemed on the verge of a meltdown when Simms appeared to be sacked in the end zone for a safety, but an official review ruled him down on the 1. Tennessee punted but scored on the next possession with a 35-yard touchdown pass from Simms to Justin Hunter on fourthand-6 to cut Florida’s lead to 24-17 with a 11:24 left.

Tennessee scored first for the first time against Florida since 2001 when Daniel Lincoln kicked a late first-quarter, 49-yard field goal, tying his career high.

KNOXVILLE - Matt Simms threw a 25-yard touchdown to Denarius Moore on Tennessee’s first play of double-overtime as the Volunteers beat Alabama-Birmingham 32-29 on Saturday.

The Volunteers (2-2) had held a 23-7 lead at halftime. But the Blazers (1-3) staged their second major comeback in two weeks as David Isabelle found Frantrell Forrest on a 27-yard touchdown strike and ran for 6 yards for another score and Bryan Ellis hit Jeffery Anderson on two 2-point conversions.

Ellis hit Pat Shed on a 14-yard pass to pick up a first down in the second overtime but his 7-yard pass to Patrick Hearn came up 4 yards short of the end zone, and Zahn scored on a 21-yard field goal to put UAB up 29-26 before the Vols’ final touchdown.

Simms opened the scoring with a 13-yard pass to Moore at the 10:59 mark of the first quarter. UAB responded to tie the game at 7 with a 52-yard touchdown pass from Bryan Ellis to Mike Jones with 2:34 in the first quarter, but Simms answered with a 72-yard touchdown to Zach Rogers on the next play.

With 1:55 before halftime, Prentiss Wagner picked off Bryan Ellis on the next play and returned it 9 yards for a touchdown.
