Völkl Snowboards are unique because of the innovative capabilities of the development department and the in-house race laboratory, who research, test and experiment with the latest high-tech materials. This passion for perfection is what a rider feels in each and every turn and jump. If our sophisticated technology is the roots of Völkl Snowboards, our team riders are its nurturing soil. It is they who scrutinize our boards to the full, in the most extreme conditions.

YOU CAN FEEL IT! As long as snow falls we will live what we preach: the creation and en hancement of high tech products that make snowboarding an unrivaled experience. Völkl built their first snowboards in 1987. Since then, we’ve been perfecting them and we’re proud of the unique developments and features we have introduced. Völkl Premium Carbon, the legendary Horror-Shock Absorber, genius Powder Channel and the one and only Grip Lacquer Topsheet are just a few of the special creations from Völkl Snowboards. For the 2014/15 season we are once again able to implement our team riders’ wishes and dreams and are proud to present new shapes, features and boards within the line. They include a new Freestyle and Freeride Hybrid Shape, Tapered and Blunt Nose Geometries, an Ultimate Vibration Object and much more, all of which have allowed us to update existing boards and make new models such as the GeniX, Steaze, Disturbia, Untrac and Alright shine.

Excellent products with unbeatable riding qualities – for 90 years this has always been and will always be the ethos behind the Völkl brand.

Welcome to

POWDERLAND While mother hulda visited the Northern Alps only occasionally last winter, she definitely had a blast in East Tyrol, a small part of Austria close to the Italian border: head-high snow walls, chest-deep powder, deeply covered spots – it was a truly exceptional season. Of course our riders didn‘t want to

Peter Walchhofer When we started our trip to East Tyrol in Innsbruck in February it was dumping so heavily that we had to put on snow chains half way. The avalanche danger in the resorts was extremely high so we decided to stay in Lienz for a few days shooting some street spots. However, this turned out to be more difficult than expected as most of the rails were buried underneath deep snow. Nevertheless, we scored great shots during our four-day trip and then headed towards the resort of Defreggental where we were rewarded with endless pillow lines, tree runs and drops! The entire footage of this incredible trip can be seen in the new Sane! movie (sanesnow.com) and the Vรถlkl Team Edit...

Michi Schatz After we had checked out some street spots in Lienz on the first day, we agreed on a double kinked rail next to the main street, but first we had to dig it out for two hours! Simon took some heavy slams during the session but finally got a sick frontside boardslide. The next day we discovered an abandoned furniture store and did a rail to drop from the first floor; that was really cool! At some point the police showed up but they only told us to be careful and not get hurt.

12

Simon Pircher On my way to Lienz I was completely stunned by Mother Nature‘s two sides: Before entering the tunnel everything was green and when exiting it you were driving along two meter high snow walls! The session at the double kinked rail in Lienz was the most memorable, as we all took some heavy beatings but also bagged amazing shots. When the only street leading into the Defreggental finally reopened, after being buried under an avalanche, we could continue our trip and ride some pow. It was still too dangerous to explore the backcountry, so we mainly stayed in the forest. Unfortunately, Michi crashed against a tree on our second powder day breaking one of his ribs and ending our epic trip earlier than planned.

Chris KrÜll There is probably no other area I have been shooting more often in last season than East Tyrol. I drove there eleven times and experienced some incredible days: the Defreggental has so many good spots and shooting possibilities. There is something for everyone, no matter if you’re looking for road gaps, pillow lines, kicker spots or big lines. Together with Stani I scored one of the best days: we found a small area with so many possibilities that we stayed there the entire day. I think each of us was able to shoot three different spots; it felt like on a huge playground!

14

Michi Stanschitz The terrain and its facilities in East Tyrol are just amazing! We had a bit of everything, kicker spots, corners, gaps and bonks ... For these photos we found the spots right next to the road. „Spots2go“

Surf, Snow & Siesta There are only a few places on the planet where you can shred waves and powder on the same day. Cantabria in the North of Spain is one of them; embedded between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pyrenees it takes less than one hour to switch from surfing to snowboarding! That‘s what the Völkl riders Simon Pircher and Chris ‚CK‘ Kröll did last March when they participated in the Obsession-A2 Fussion Surf & Snow Contest.

Here, the riders competed in a perfectly shaped banked slalom, while enjoying spring-like temperatures, bluebird sky and fiesta vibes.

„I love going snowboarding in Spain“, explained CK. „The scene is really small but very passionate, and the Spanish Pyrenees can definitely keep up with the Alps.“ After Sara from the Spanish Völkl distribution picked them up from the airport in Bilbao, they drove straight to the sea. „Fortunately the waves weren‘t as big as two weeks before when beach houses were washed away“, Simon said after their first surf session. However, the two Austrians didn‘t have a lot of time to get used to the water

In total, we drove 1300 kilometers and ate 100.000 calories each – a pretty productive trip, right?“

SHAPE PHILOSOPHY With a variety of Rocker, Camber and Hybrid Shapes, we have more board types to choose from than ever before. A choice of board is determined by preferred terrain as well as personal riding style and taste.

23

Camber TAIL

CAMBER

NOSE

Camber Boards, with classic tension, are concave between the two contact points of nose and tail. With direct power transmission and maximized edge pressure they are best suited for precise, aggressive riding styles and high velocity riding; as well as the big kicker line, icy pipes and high speed runs in the backcountry. Hence shapes with a lot of camber require proper riding technique as well as experience. However, in a more mellow version, camber shapes can also be great for beginners as they teach flawless technique and skills.

Rocker TAIL

ROCKER

FLAT

ROCKER

NOSE

All Völkl Rocker Boards with “negative camber” are flat between the bindings, while from the inserts out towards the nose and tail the board is convex, which provides amazing float in powder. In general, rockers shapes are more forgiving, making them perfect for tricks on rails and jibs in the park. Völkl has also added a bit more width to the nose and tail, combined with a smaller radius, offering incredible hold when a board is on an edge, comparable to camber shapes. The result is a playful board with perfect edge grip when needed. This distinguishes Völkl Rocker Shapes from all others on the market.

Hybrid TAIL ROCKER

CAMBER

ROCKER NOSE

This universal shape combines classic Camber tension between the bindings with a mellow rocker in the nose and tail. This offers playful riding qualities while maintaining excellent edge hold, making hybrid shapes not only great for the backcountry but also for the park. A shorter board is definitely a benefit in both cases! Völkl has two different hybrid variations on offer: a Freestyle and a Freeride Hybrid Shape, with sidecuts and nose geometries perfectly matched to their designated terrains.

FREESTYLE Hybrid TAIL ROCKER

CAMBER

ROCKER NOSE

Playful park riding works best on short boards, so the team asked our R+D Laboratory for a short board with the edge hold and stability of a much longer one! They also wanted a board that facilitated fast rotations but minimized unwanted reverts and didn’t catch an edge in washed out landings. It also had to be as stable and smooth as a longer board with according edge hold when charging icy in-runs. It was no easy task but our R+D Department worked out an unique sidecut, pushing the widest parts of the board towards the nose and tail. This extends the effective edge, allowing riders to opt for shorter boards without sacrificing edge hold or sta bility. It also ensures a safe feeling on hard obstacles in the park as well as perfect grip when pushing in icy pipes. >>> Xbreed / GeniX / Disturbia

Hybrid Shapes To combine the playful riding characteristics of rocker boards with the stability and response of camber boards, the Völkl R+D Department developed two different Hybrid Shapes for freestylers and freeriders.

25

FREERIDE Hybrid TAIL ROCKER

CAMBER

ROCKER NOSE

The only thing that matters in powder is float! Tired of struggling with 180 cm pow sticks, the team asked for a freeride board with maximum float but that was still playful and dynamic in the backcountry. This was the inspiration for the Völkl R+D Department to conceive the Playful Freeride Sidecut (Alright). This dynamic freeride shape, with its shortened effective edge is super responsive. To accomplish this, the widest points of nose and tail are pushed inwards, while the camber between the bindings is en hanced. This adds grip as soon as pressure is put on the edges. The Rocker in nose and tail also lets you drift effortlessly in steep couloirs and icy terrain, without uncontrolled sliding. At the same time the rocker underneath the tips prevents the board from digging into bombed out powder, especially if a rider’s weight is thrown over the front when landing. >>> Alright / Untrac

Pro Camber Shape Extremely strong camber. Best for advanced riders. Maximum edge-hold, but easy to control. Direct response with massive POP.

Pro Camber Shape with nose rocker Best for advanced riders and all Speed Junkies! The shorter edge of the concave nose increases turning qualities, while maintaining smoothness and direct response, allowing speed checks in the deepest faces.

SHOCK ABSORBER

HIGH TECH is given a high profile at Vรถlkl and

so the legendary Horror-Shock Absorber is refined every year, to make our boards as stable as possible.

31

HORROR-SHOCK ABSORBER The team’s signature boards, the Squad Prime and Squad Rocker are equipped with an espe cially durable and stable armour wood, which can support the weight of a small car. These H-shaped inlays are milled into the wood core around the inserts, protecting the board from cracks and breaks in the hardest of landings. And an extra portion of POP is added too...

>>> Squad Prime / Squad Rocker

SHOCK ABSORBERThe Shock Absorber, a relief on the core, also counters impacts. The hardwood used is of an especially high density and sucks up the stresses and strains imposed by the bindings’ edges. As an additional side effect, the inlay also provides additional POP. >>> Xbreed / GeniX / Steaze / Dimension / Spade / Savvy / Alright / Untrac / Squad Jr.

SQUAD PRIME THE FREESTYLE FLAGSHIP The Squad Prime is our freestyle team’s secret weapon! With its symmetric shape and flex switch riding is just as smooth and balanced as riding regular, while the extended effective edge guarantees perfect grip and control in all situations. It is especially handy for fast inruns and the hard walls of a pipe. Even with massive airtime and icy landings this stick stays super stable, as the integrated Horror-Shock Absorber could bare the weight of a small car.

LENGTH 156W

HORROR-SHOCK ABSORBER Continually improved, the HSA is made of especially durable armor wood inlays, that are milled into the core around the binding area. This allows the H-shaped inlays to absorb impacts of hard landings, making the boards strong enough to endure the weight of a small car, without losing any POP.

XBREED SUPERIOR SYMBIOSIS OF ALL ROCKER & CAMBER BENEFITS! To make sure you get the best out of all possible terrain, the Xbreed combines smoothness and liveliness in a one-of-akind Freestyle Hybrid Shape. With the response of camber and the looseness of rocker it rides playfully in slush and aggressive in icy pipes. High-speed runs over the big kicker line feel just as relaxed as first tracks in deep champagne powder. The fast Sintered Base also provides extra speed, while the Shock Absorber sucks up hard landings.

FREESTYLE HYBRID SHAPE For some riders a Hybrid Shape is the perfect symbiosis between both “shape worlds”. With light camber between the bindings, this shape is true and precise to ride, while the rocker in the nose and tail still make it more playful and floaty in powder than classic boards. THE NEXT

GENERATION

Each year, at the end of the winter season, a recurring story unfolds in Ischgl, with groms as far as the eyes can see and racoon faces wherever you look and everywhere a babble of German, Spanish, Japanese and Finish echoes through the streets of the Austrian mountain village. Welcome to the Vรถlkl World Rookie Finals! The crowds have been as big for the event than this year: After a long season with ten events on five continents more than 110 promising snowboarders from 24 nations travelled to Ischgl at the beginning of April to battle it out for the World (Rookie) Title. For the first time ever in the history of the World Rookie Tour the crown went to Japan, with our 17-year-old team rider Keita Inamura reigning victorious!

ROOKIES ON THE ROAD In March, a motley crew of Vรถlkl rookies set out for Switzerland. Slovenia and During their one-week trip the young bloods from Germany, France, Italy, Norway were not only facing thrilling team battles and countless park excessive raclette feasts.

sessions but also

50 The group‘s first stop was Thyon, just around the corner from Verbier, as the resort was hosting a very special slopestyle event. The ‚Gangs of Tyon‘ contest invites ski and snowboard crews from all over Europe to compete against each other in head-to-head battles. The team showing the better performance on the challenging kicker and jib set up was then allowed to advance into the next round. For the 9th edition of the contest more than 50 riders signed up, with Völkl sending two crews into the battlefield. From the kickoff the level of riding was very high with the tricks becoming more and more difficult with each round. Among the four best teams to make it into the finals was the Völkl Snowboards crew with Tit State (SLO), Jan Kralj (SLO), Marius Bakken (NOR) and Florent Vorger (FRA) and after a close

battle with the local Centralpark crew they ended up in second place! The second Völkl team missed the finals by a hair‘s breadth, taking fifth place. However, the next day their disappointment was a distant memory when they bagged a lot of trophies and Swiss Francs in the ‚Tricks for Cash‘ sessions! „I liked the ‚No Spin To Win‘ contest the most because you had to show original grabs and tweaks“, recalled Völkl rider Hannes Zösmayr who took home the award for ‚The Most Stylish Rider‘ while his team mate from Italy, Antonio Contessi, was awarded ‚The Smoothest Rider‘ of the session.

52 After a successful weekend the team headed for Laax, where a product shooting and visit to the Freestyle Academy were scheduled. „Laax simply has one of the best parks in Europe“, a stoked Antonio Contessi stated after the first session. The large selection of different obstacles and a perfectly shaped superpipe made it easy for the riders to go big during the two days of their stay. 15-year-old Loris Framarin from Italy also enjoyed the trip to Laax: „It was a great experience to shoot with the boards from next season and to meet and shred with the other Völkl team riders.“

LAAX At the end of the week another highlight was waiting for the rookies: together with photographer Patrick Steiner they visited the Freestyle Academy where they had a good romp on the trampolines and foam pits. „The possibilities here are incredible“, said Antonio. „There are countless trampolines, workout stations and synthetic carpet ramps for snowboarding and skiing where you land in a super safe foam pit; we could try new tricks without having to worry about crashing. It‘s a pity that there are no more of these facilities in Europe!“ After a busy week of contests and shooting the Völkl rookies returned to their respective home countries with good memories and some money shots in their bags. For Jan Kralj from Slovenia it was one of the best trips of the season: „The week was so much fun because we worked together as a close team and got so much done!“ Looking at the many trophies and shots there is no doubt about that...

DIMENSION BIG FOOT OF THE BOARDS Big guys living it large shouldn’t be punished for their boot size! Therefore Völkl caters for them with an extra wide board that fits sizes over US 11, making toe drag a thing of the past. The Easy Rocker shape provides the Dimension with a super smooth but playful board feeling, no matter if its in the park, pow or slopes. Despite the wide waist it’s far from sluggish, in fact it‘s just as lively as a regular board.

VÖLKL PREMIUM CARBON WEAVE Especially produced for Völkl these extremely light Premium Car bon fibers in the lower layer make the board particularly strong and lively. The carbon fibers’ tensile strength allows for very short response times and the length-wise integrated fiberglass strips enhance the board’s torsional stiffness and add more POP.

WIDE SHAPES When buying snowboard boots, neglecting your shoe size can result in an uncomfortable season. Too small of feet on a wide board mean that not enough pressure can be put on the edges – the board gets dull in its reaction and hard to turn. When wearing big boots on a narrow board, toes and heel overlap and lead to edge catching slams on icy slopes or even a bruised heel after jumps! A brief instruction to avoid this: With a boot size of 9 (MP* 26) or smaller, we recommend a narrow board below 260 mm. Boot size 10 (MP* 28) is falling into the “gray zone” – depending on the length of the shoe sole, the stance and the range of riding, it might be already advisable to ride a wide board. Those who are wearing boots bigger than size 11 (MP* 28) should buy an extra wide shape as it will offer the best board performance and direct power transmission. Don‘t worry: Wide doesn‘t mean sluggish! The brandnew Dimension, with 280 mm waist Völkl‘s widest board, shows agile performance and direct power transmission from the first run.

EXTRA WIDE means boards that are about 270 mm wide – ideal for riders with big feet. Thanks to their subtle shapes, these boards offer great response and riding despite their width. SPADE ALL-MOUNTAIN ALL-ROUNDER WITH STYLE If you don’t want to be constrained in where you ride then the Spade is the perfect board for you. The directional sidecut makes detours into the backcountry just as comfy as visits to the park. If a trick isn’t completely stomped, the forgiving shape prevents nasty edge catching and the Shock Absorber can easily suck up bigger drops too. Rocker and a little set back allow the Spade to float on powder, even when flat and on the slopes it stays smooth and stable even at high speeds.

EASY ROCKER SHAPE This board is flat between the bindings too and only sports a minimal rocker shape, making the board low-key on the slope, with its full potential unfolding in the backcountry and the park. This makes these boards super easy to handle while extremely lively and forgiving. At the end of March, a kind of fairy tale took place in Livigno, Italy: for four days some of the best female freeskiers and snowboarders gathered in a castle made of snow shredding, partying and laughing together from sunrise to sunset.

Elena KÜnz Winner 2014 The format of the Nine Queens is great because a lot of us girls are used to the contest circuit and don’t get the chance to shoot footage too often; especially on a unique feature like the castle that has so much to give visually. For me it was definitely a very fresh, new experience.

When I got an email with the subject ‘Nine Queens Invitation’ last October I first thought this must be a joke. But it was real! I was so much looking forward to this event and it turned out to be the best week of the whole season.

Alex Papis I had already seen pictures from the previous years and knew that it was something really special to be one of the four invited photographers and to document the event. Furthermore the Völkl riders Elena Könz and Birgit Rofner were invited too and I was absolutely sure that they would kill it. They didn‘t disappoint.

SAVVY PLAYFUL FREESTYLEALL-MOUNTAIN BOARD With its fast, sintered base, the Savvy flies over flat cat tracks and is able to clear any table. With the longer effective edge of the Blunt Nose Geometry, it possesses a lot more grip and stability, while feeling a lot shorter. And with the Twin-Tip Freestyle Rocker, made for jibs and butters, this board is also the right choice for exploring new obstacles in the backcountry.

SINTERED BASE The production process of Sintered Bases forms pores that readily absorb wax. This makes the Sintered Base very soft, yet excep tionally damage-resistant and ensures excellent gliding properties when waxed regularly.

DISTURBIA A NEW DIMENSION IN ALL-MOUNTAIN FREESTYLE Ridden with a low, centered stance much like a skateboard, the Disturbia guarantees amazing board feeling in all terrains. In powder the nose rocker keeps it afloat and eliminates cramp in the back leg, while the playful flex makes jibs and tricks a walk in the park. Also a longer effective edge allows for long carves and sharp turns in the backcountry. Look forward to a completely new board feel!

TRIAXIAL FIBERGLASS WEAVE IN UPPER AND LOWER BEAM This special weave consists of fibers that are positioned at a 45° angle (+45°/-45°) in addition to a longitudinal direction. Depending on the density of the woven fibers, torsion and flex are enhanced without increasing the core’s thickness. This reduces weight and en hances responsiveness as well as edge grip.

Girls keen on learning the right technique from the beginning will have a lot of fun with the Melody, and will carry on doing so as they progress with it.

HIGH-GLOSS LACQUERED TOPSHEET The application of a clear varnish coating on a board’s topsheet makes it even more durable and slick and prevents snow from sticking to the board. The Alright is a very playful board and offers great floatation that almost makes it impossible to get stuck with the nose while riding powder. The shape is very unique and almost resembles a snowboard from the 80’s. Whether in powder, the backcountry or on the slope, the Alright can be ridden in all conditions!

Stani

We found some really cool spots and the Alright was definitely the right board for this photo shoot. Thanks to the new sidecut with its shortened effective edge the board rides as playfully as a park board, while the tapered nose provides amazing float in powder. I love doing powder lines, pillow runs, cliff drops and butter tricks with it!

Ueli

You need to ride the Alright a little bit more centered, like a twin-tip board. Thanks to the long nose with Freeride Rocker it easily glides and almost hovers above the surface. Since our trip to Chamonix I never leave the house without the Alright when looking for fun powder runs in the resort or in the backcountry!

BIG MOUNTAINS, BIG FUN Why look elsewhere when all the good stuff is in your backyard? Vรถlkl rider Joe Lax shows us his home turf, British Colombia, at its best: stunningly steep and full of snow.

78 I am drawn to ride steep lines because I like the challenge, not just from a riding perspective but also from a timing perspective. A lot of things need to happen for certain lines to become rideable: it takes proper weather, stable snow and a deep enough snowpack to cover the rocks and glacial holes. The snow also needs to fall with a certain amount of density in order for it to stick to terrain this steep. If a line is speaking to me, and it is difficult to get in, I often will rappel in over cliffs and cornices, to get at the line I want to ride. It is another variable, and it is fun to overcome challenges to line up these memorable moments. When the conditions come together I push myself to seize these moments because timing is everything in the big mountains and you never know when you’ll get another chance. One of my favorite areas to ride is the Coast Mountains, about an hour north of my home, in Pemberton, BC, which reach up to 2800 meters. My friends and I are normally using snowmobiles to go up old logging roads. We push as far as we can go by sled and then either splitboard or hike to get into the lines. The mountains aren’t always easy to get to, and often the weather doesn’t cooperate. It is always an adventure! The high country in the Coast Mountains is heavily glaciated and there are many crevasses to navigate on the way up and on the way down. It was especially dangerous this year as the winter started late and the snowpack was lower than normal, but this actually made it easier to get onto some of the bigger lines because in most seasons large cornices typically close them out.

I have looked at this steep spine line for many years, but it always looked too hard to get onto safely because of a large and very dangerous overhanging cornice. This year, with a bit lower snowpack, I could get right to the edge. I looked in and the line was so steep that it appeared as if it dropped off into a large cliff towards the glacier 700 meters below. It blindly rolled over from the top and I had to trust that the snow had stuck to the rocks and that I was in the right place. The crux of the spine was almost 80 degrees, which is the steepest line I have ever ridden.

80

and There are many unique ice formations on the Pemberton Ice Cap. I stopped other but years the over times hundred a probably cliff glacier looked at this ice terrain has always distracted me. When I finally hiked up amongst the huge and pillars, to get to the top of the cliff, I felt tiny. I worked my way to the edge like sent a waterfall of snow off the cliff before I aired off this glacial beauty. It felt I was riding onto a large breaking wave. It was a pretty rad moment.

Freeride BACKCOUNTRY & POWDER - DIRECTIONAL SIDECUT / MORE SETBACK - SPECIAL CONSTRUCTION & FLEX CONCEPT - ULTRA-LIGHT / COMPLETE CARBON LAYER - MASSIVE FLOATATION

From fresh tracks far from civilization to runs under the lift, there’s no better feeling than chucking roosters in fresh snow. But freeriding is a lot more than just slashing powder. To match personal riding style with terrain, we have three variations of freeride shapes in the Völkl quiver. The core value of all freeride boards is to be lightweight, which we achieve with a complete lower layer of Völkl Premium Carbon in the core, which also adds outstanding response. This is handy on the slopes and in fast tree runs and narrow chutes, where turns have to be precise.

For “Big Mountain & Deep Powder” the SELECTA is the perfect choice of board. The wide nose and extreme Pin-Tail Shape offer tremendous float, while the unique Powder Channel provides the ultimate surf feeling, even on flatter faces. And on powder free days, the Selecta delivers fast edge-to-edge performance to ensure fun on the slopes. The new ALRIGHT occupies the “Playful Freeride” category. In combination with the hybrid shape the Tapered Nose Geometry provides the shortest effective edge possible for extremely playful riding and excellent float. It is the board of choice for anyone taking their freestyle tricks to the backcountry! The COAL XT is a great fit for anyone into the domain of “Progressive Freeride”. A firmer flex delivers high speed control, maximum edge hold and direct riding dynamics, while the Nose Rocker and the new nose elevation add extra float. >>> Selecta / Alright / Coal XT

The Alright rides as playfully and rotates as easily as a short park stick but with its special nose shape it also ploughs through powder like the biggest big mountain boards. Tapered Nose Geometry The right nose shape is just as crucial for riding and board characteristics as any other component in a board. Hence we developed a completely new shape for Winter 2014/15, especially tailored to the Playful Freeride Hybrid Shape.

The square, tapered form not only provides perfect float but also playfully handles changing snow conditions off piste. With the Tapered Nose the Alright can cut through hard crusts and won’t get stuck even in difficult terrain. The angular segments divert pressure away from the edges, so the nose won’t dig into the snow even in blown out or broken crust. This special geometry also pushes the widest parts of the board toward the middle, shortening the effective edge by at least 30 cm. This gives a 167 model a similar edge length as a 140! You won’t believe the riding pleasure that the Playful Freeride Hybrid Shape with Tapered Nose delivers. >>> Alright

INTO THE WILD

There’s no place on earth as beautiful yet simultaneously so hostile as the remote area at the tip of South America, Patagonia. In the blink of an eye the weather can change, with only minutes between bluebird and whiteout. However, those patient enough to wait for this hot-tempered diva to calm down will be rewarded with the finest powder, virgin lines and steep couloirs. Our team rider Martin ‚Seili‘ Seiler is one such man.

The locals call this line ‚Zebra‘, due to the many white couloirs and black rock spines. From our refuge El-Frey it took us two hours to hike with splitboards, cross a ridge and climb to reach the dropins of the couloirs. The rough weather in Patagonia didn‘t make it easy; twice we had to turn back at the drop-in and climb back down after strong wind and fog replaced the morning sunshine. But the day this picture was shot everything worked out perfectly and we ripped the narrow Zebra couloirs. The fickle conditions made the riding here a very special experience.

90

guy from ‚Into the Wild‘ would die on his first day “Thein Patagonia“ say the locals. This area of the Andes, between Chile and Argentina, is the epitome of wild as I found out during my splitboard trip last summer – with temperatures dropping as low as -30, howling winds and heavy snowfalls. However, when the wind died and the clouds disappeared revealing sparkling, fresh powder Patagonia unfolded its untouched beauty and wilderness. It was exactly these moments that made the long trip to the Southern hemisphere so worthwhile.

In Bariloche we discovered a Swiss colony, founded in the 19th century by immigrants from Switzerland. In the picture, above my head, you can see the emblem of my home canton, Wallis. I didn‘t try the cheese fondue or other Swiss dishes as I fear these guys have been away from home too long, but there’s nothing more delicious in Argentina than ‚Asados‘ (a special kind of BBQ) of fresh local meat.

On this day we enjoyed fresh powder and spray after spray in front of a stunning backdrop, until strong winds pushed in the clouds in the afternoon; we surrendered and went flyfishing on the lake in the background. This was Patagonia at it’s best! If I learnt one thing here, it was that when it comes to weather conditions you have to be flexible.

Short hike just before enjoying the aforementioned turns.

92

Our filmer Grego Campi, in his self-made snow cave, which protected him from the howling winds while he waited for us to get to the start of our line.

Home Sweet Home: our refuge El–Frey (2500 meters above sea level) that provided us with countless faces and lines, set on fire by the evening sun, as in this picture.

PATAGONIEN Season: July until October (with the best conditions from mid-August until mid-September) Resorts: Caviahue (1650-2958 meters), Cerro Chapelco (1250-1600 meters), Cerro Bayo (1050-1752 meters), Cerro Catedral (1030-2000 meters), Perito Moreno (1467-2220 meters), La Hoya (1350-2050 meters)

The crew (Thomas Orol, Yago Najda, filmer and photographer Grego Campi, Martin Seiler) checking a line from the El-Frey refuge. In the background on the left-hand side you can see the Cerro Catedral.

How to get there: There are daily flights from Buenos Aires to Bariloche, 20 kilometers from Cerro Catedral. From here you can reach all other resorts easily with a rental car or bus. Currency: Argentine peso (€1 = around 11 ARS) Prices: Food and transport are pretty cheap; a night in a hostel costs around €10, a ski ticket around €36.

SPLITBOARDING TOURING, BACKCOUNTRY & POWDER - DIRECTIONAL SIDECUT / GREATER SETBACK - ULTRA-LIGHT / COMPLETE CARBON LAYER - MAXIMUM FLOATATION & PERFECT EDGE GRIP - EASY HANDLING

Splitboarding is a lot more than just a breathtaking hike followed by untracked runs. It is a total immersion into the beauty of nature, far from noise, and tourist trails. Every tour is an intense experience and the descent an unforgettable adventure. As mountain folks say: “THE SPIRITS RISE IN THE ENDLESS VASTNESS OF THE MOUNTAINS”. And to ensure that you can rise to the occasion to, Völkl has developed the Untrac Splitboard, which is power efficient, easy and straightforward to handle. Cold hands are a thing of the past with the unique VÖLKL SKIN PIN SYSTEM, as it eliminates unnecessary fumbling. Simply hook the integrated pin into the eyelet in the nose and fix it with a 90° twist, while the other end is fixed to the hook in the tail with a rubber fastener. The skins for the UNTRAC Splitboard feature a special VACUUM-BASE TECHNOLOGY, which sticks to the base even in extremely cold temperatures. After hiking simply stick them together, without having to use a separating foil, and stow them fuss-free in your backpack.

The Untrac also comes with the pre-mounted VOILÉ SPLIT KIT, with dual climbing aids. This enables you to change from snowboard to splitboard, as well as swap the bindings, in just a few steps and while keeping gloves on! At the same time the new FREERIDE HYBRID SHAPE with camber between the bindings offers perfect hold on hard pack on the run down, as well as on the hike up. For especially icy traverses the teeth of the crampons on the FASTEC SPLITEC ALU Bindings offer extra grip. Thanks to the integrated Slider Track they are easily mountable on the way up, while strapped in and with gloves on: simply lift the heel, insert the crampons from behind and secure them with a click. After use they can be dismounted just as easily by pulling a little lever, without getting out of the bindings. >>> Untrac / Fastec Splitec Alu

NEED FOR SPEED Omar Visitin SBX Worldcup Winner 2014

Omar Visintin from South Tyrol, Italy, loves speed and not only on the boardercross course. After the 24-yearold won his first World Cup, at the beginning of last season, he kept winning contests and at the end of the winter was awarded the crystal ball for the SBX World Cup title. This was the highlight of what has been an extremely successful career for Omar, which began when he was only twelve years old, participating in his first snowboard contest. „From that moment I knew that I wanted to become a snowboard pro one day“, says Omar, who also won the World Junior Championships in 2009. „This season has definitely been the most important for me as besides participating at the Olympic Games and winning the World Cup title I also became Italian Champion“, he explains. And the board that is always on his side in competitions is the Coal Race.

COAL RACE RIDERS READY – ATTENTION – GO! The Völkl Race Lab designed this machine of a board for one purpose: reaching the fastest speed possible! It was originally developed for professional racing, but can now happily accompany all speed junkies on their personal races on the hills. With special vibration absorbers created for World Cup missions, it rides smoothly and offers full control. A combination of an ultra lightweight construc tion with carbon belt and VRL split base provides the Coal with super fast acceleration. Something team riders Omar Visintin and Mateusz Ligocki have proved with several BX World Cup victories.

VÖLKL RACE LAB SPLITBASE This exceptional base combination was created using the bestknown materials but is the secret to the fastest and best to prepare bases on the market. UVO – ULTIMATE VIBRATION OBJECT +++ Benefits +++ - Increased agility - Increased smoothness and enhanced control - Reduced effort

In 2014/15 Völkl has applied racing technology’s Ultimate Vibration Object for the first time, making the Coal Race as smooth and stable as possible. This special, three dimensional UVO vibration damper is built into the nose, where it moves freely and effectively, countering all bumps and blows with its own mass. On the one hand this increases stability, while on the other it enhances acceleration as well as edge hold, as the contact between the edge and the ground is maintained for longer. On top of this it also makes the board more agile, so requiring less input at high speed. Despite the comparatively small mass and dimension of the UVO, the dampening is superb. >>> Coal Race

CHECK YOURSELF BEFORE YOU WRECK YOURSELF! Big mountain lines, huge kicker jumps and crazy rail tricks are a matter of course in snowboard magazines and videos, suggesting the pros find their job a walk in the park. However, what you don‘t get to see are the moments when the riders decide against a certain spot or a trick, as even the best skills are sometimes not enough. When snow conditions, weather or an individual’s mental or physical state is disputable, pros should have the courage to say no. In the end, nobody wants to spend a winter on crutches instead of on a snowboard, right?

Even if pros, with years of experience, know exactly what they are doing, prepare their body with regular exercises and try difficult tricks on the trampoline or in the foam pit until perfection, a degree of risk always remains. This is especially true when pushing the limits of the sport. Last season, Aline Bock, Michael ‚Stani‘ Stanschitz and Chris Kröll did their job as usual but were unfortunately forced to end their winter in the hospital.

110

Aline Bock It happened at the beginning of January, in Chamonix. Stani, Ueli Kestenholz and I had found a spot where several cliff drops led into a nice landing. The powder that we had thoroughly checked with our probes before seemed deep and perfect. After each of us had jumped several times, I wanted to give it a last try. I did a perfect Method, but when I landed I hit a „shark“ that was buried ten centimeters underneath the snow, half a meter next to my last landing, which was as soft as a pillow. There was a bang, a shock went through my leg and smashed the head of my tibia into several pieces. I had the feeling that I did nothing wrong; I was probably just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now I‘m facing eight months of rehabilitation with mobilization, coordination, cardio and strength training. I will fight to come back physically and

to do this gap over a river, which had a pretty sketchy in-run. As the sun was starting to disappear behind the hill I had to hurry. As I reached the take off I knew I was too slow but it was too late to stop. Somehow I made it to the other side of the gap but landed too short, slipped off the landing, and fell eight meters into a riverbed. Snowboarding is an extreme sport and no matter how careful you are, a certain risk always remains. However, you can try to minimize that risk. We should have called it a day and come back the next morning. The building of the spot had taken more time than we had planned and the spring snow had become so wet and slow in the afternoon that I couldn‘t get enough speed. My conclusion: despite careful planning and evaluation you should never rush anything!

Chris Kröll The day in Livigno somehow felt strange from the beginning. It was a very big kicker; you had to jump 28 meters before reaching the landing! First we watched the skiers who were shooting before us. Each of them was jumping way too far and we weren‘t sure how much speed we would need. When it was finally our turn around 3.30 in the afternoon Seppe Smith jumped first and went huge. 30 minutes later still none of our team had followed him and finally I pushed myself and dropped in on Seppe‘s line. However, I wanted to do one more speed check to not jump as far as he did. At the take off I was preparing for a backside 3 to check out the kicker but after half the rotation I saw the landing in front of me and knew I was too short and about to crash on the table. It crossed my mind that I had to aim for a controlled crash in order to not break both my legs and arms and seconds later it had already happened. Surprisingly, I didn‘t injure my ligaments or knees due to my controlled crash and „only“ dislocated my heel breaking two metatarsal bones. In extreme sports you can never completely eliminate the risk but I owe it to my gut instinct that I only suffered two major injuries in 13 years of professional snowboarding. Never lose respect for a spot, even if it looks easy; it can easily go down the drain.

BINDINGS 115

Simply engage the highback lever, close the Auto-Release Buckles and off you go. For fine-tuning on the mountain, the Fastec Prime Alu, Fastec Choice Alu and Fastec Utopia feature extra Micro Pump Buckles. Like classic strap bindings, they offer additional support before a big drop or kicker.

Once adjusted to fit boots and personal riding style, the straps fit snugly for the rest of the season.

You can also slightly unfasten the straps and add a bit more freedom for relaxed pow surfing. After a run the Auto-Release System automatically widens the ankle strap once the highback is opened; this is especially handy for pushing on long cat tracks, allowing for super quick strapping in and unstrapping.

FROM KIRGISTAN WITH LOVE In March 2014 the charity Cappuccino Club embarked on a 6000km trip, from Innsbruck to Kirgistan, to visit partners and film a documentary about this developing country, on the border to China. As well as their camera equipment the crew took their snowboards...

132

Sitting together drinking cups of cappuccino in 2008, a handful of snowboarders from Innsbruck came up with the idea of founding a snowboard club with a difference: its aim to help people living in poorer countries. Since its was started the Cappuccino Club has organized several charity projects collecting money for different social activities. In 2011 a snowboard calendar brought in more than €17.000, of which 100% went into micro projects in Kirgistan. Völkl Snowboards has supported the calendar from the beginning and was happy to hear that the club was planning to film a documentary and visit their partners last winter. Alois, one of the founders of the Cappuccino Club, has been working for a charity organization in Kirgistan for the last two years and was accompanying the small group from Innsbruck on its trip, which led them from the capital Bishkek to the snowy mountains that cover almost 94% of the country. The first stop was Suusamyr, a pass 3300 meter above sea level, surrounded by a sparse and surreal landscape of snow. „Snow scientists would have been stoked to see this natural spectacle“, filmer Niki Waltl recalls. „The strong wind was literally shooting fresh snow continuously through the whole valley, blowing it off the ridges and creating surreal patterns in the landscape.“ Despite the difficult snow conditions the group got out their splitboards and scored untracked powder fields and a unique panoramic view over endless mountain ranges.

134

After a week of fun shreds in the resort of TooAshu, and a few kicker sessions with the locals, they had to return to civilization as they had scheduled interviews and meetings with local charity organizations. On their way back into town they were passing a field where locals were competing in a polo tournament and could hardly believe what they saw: instead of a ball the two equestrian teams were trying to knock a headless goat into the opposing goal! Different strokes for different folks... But there were not only cultural differences between the visitors and visited. In the city of Karakol, in the Eastern part of the country, poverty was omnipresent. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union there had been little progress. “This city has its very own charm though“, says Cappuccino Club‘s Hannes Fritzer. „Surrounded by giant mountains and crisscrossed by large streets you feel a certain kind of Soviet nostalgia. It‘s almost like Cuba, with its beautiful old buildings but totally fucked up. Everywhere is in need of money there.“ Despite its poverty and sparse landscape Kirgistan is a stunningly beautiful country, with extremely lovely and hospitable people. After two incredible weeks in this different world it was time to leave: „It will definitely take some time to handle all these impressions. Tomorrow we fly back to our First World that we will now view with different eyes. Traveling educates; that‘s what we have learnt from this trip“, said Hannes Fritzer before their return to Innsbruck, where the Cappuccino Club is already working on their next project, a Charity Banked Slalom...

At ISPO 2014, Völkl Snowboards was awarded for their continued efforts in the field of ecological production processes. GreenRoomVoice, a Swiss company that developed

an independent ranking system evaluating the ecological performance of outdoor and

— 9

boardsports brands gave Völkl an overall score of good. The so-called ECOrating helps consumers to identify responsible products and enables them to make an educated choice: „Coming from conventional production methods, Völkl has turned their business and product design practices in a more sustainable direction“, GreenRoomVoice cofounder Cira Riedel explains. „Hardware and apparel from Völkl have been monitored by GreenRoomVoice ECOrating for several seasons and show continuous improvements. Considering all aspects of ECO Design, Völkl has invested into process and material improvements to continuously optimize the best balance between technical performance and ecological costs.“ We are as pleased as chips with our score but won‘t rest on our laurels and continue to question and improve our production processes.

CSR - Corporate Social Responsibility As winter sports enthusiasts, we’re more dependent on the preservation of our global eco system than ever before. To retain the white gold in our mountains, it’s not enough to make a couple of products “eco friendly”. Genuine ecologic production requires sustainability in the whole of the company, from production to sales. Völkl has taken this to heart a long time ago and has continuously evolved their efforts in all areas manufacturing, up to the employees in organization, development and distribution.

“Environmental awareness” includes a lot more than augmenting the range with some prime examples for “eco friendliness”. This starts with production and manufacturing, where pollution and output of toxins as well as use of other noxious substances are steadily reduced. As far as possible, harming materials such as plastics and solvents are replaced by recycled products or organic alternatives. And with their social commitment towards humanity, it comes full circle. All Völkl employes have various options to improve their work-life-balance through the Völkl Moves program and a number of charity projects are supported by the company and the team as well. Hence the products created aren’t only progressive and innovative, but at the same time socially viable, conscious and future-proof.

DEAD END

What should you do when there’s no snow in the valley at the end of the season and most of the resort is already closed? It‘s pretty simple, rent a camper, head for the snowy mountain passes and start exploring the backcountry with a splitboard or build a kicker next to the street! That‘s what Völkl riders Simon Pircher, Peter Walchhofer and Marc Großgasteiger did at the end of last season. Together with photographer Alex Papis and filmer Balint they spent ten days in a very small space but with a lot of creative freedom.

their journey into Switzerland and stopped at Julier Pass. Exploring the backcountry with their splitboards, the riders soon found a nice natural quarter and had a fun session, which resulted in great shots. Another day, another mountain pass: on their way to the 2300 meter high Bernina Pass, which connects Switzerland with Italy, the crew found numerous creative features but in the end went for a „rainbow tree“ and a corner with an extremely icy landing that wasn‘t easy to ride. „Our plan was to drive around the mountain passes

Simon Pircher „We hit a different spot almost every day, which sometimes also involved a bit of hiking. After a few days the inside of our camper didn‘t smell too nice. I think everyone would agree if I say that our visit to the hot springs in Meran was a good idea. Overall it was an incredibly cool and productive trip and the perfect way to end the season!“

Marc Grossgasteiger „The trip with the camper was definitely something different. You are so flexible and independent. Living with five people in a small room for ten days was something you need to get used to. You have to adapt to the group and also show respect to the others. But we quickly got along and had a lot of fun together.“

150

Alex Papis „The session with BBQ, beers and backflips was definitely the funniest! The sun was shining, the kicker was easy to build and the boys were doing backflips and tweaks over the grill. This is how we had imagined the trip from the beginning!“

Peter Walchhofer „Our first stop was the Passo Tonale in Italy. After we found a spot for the next day we spent a nice evening in front of the campfire drinking beers. Unfortunately we didn‘t know our camper too well and had to spent the night without heating.“
