Punjabi singer and actor Parmish Verma garners international publicity for his wife, Liberal candidate Guneet (Geet) Grewal THE Liberal Party on August 19 tweeted: “Liberals in Mission– Matsqui–Fraser Canyon have nominated Guneet Grewal as our Team Trudeau candidate. Congratulations, Guneet!” Incidentally, Guneet’s name appears as the shortened form “Geet” on the official Liberal website. That announcement would not have received much attention as such but for the fact that Grewal’s husband, famous Punjabi singer and actor Parmish Verma, tweeted from India: “So proud of my better half !!Congratulations, Guneet, on winning the @liberal party nomination! I’m looking forward to you becoming the next Member of Parliament For Mission-Matsqui-Fraser-Canyon in #Canada. I’m with you all the way. You Got this, babe” along with his photo with Grewal. He also put that up on his Instagram account that has a following of more than 6 million. The Indian media as well as the Punjabi media all around the world then picked up the story as it appears that the revelation that he was married broke the hearts of millions of female fans. “Parmish Verma officially introduces his lady love to the netizens!” said The Times of India. With South Asians comprising 20.7 per cent of the population of the riding, that is sure to help Grewal, especially if the race turns out to be a tight one. The Mission—Matsqui— Fraser Canyon was created by the 2012 federal electoral boundaries redistribution and came into effect in 2015. It was created out of the electoral districts of Pitt Meadows—Maple Ridge—Mission, Abbotsford and Chilliwack—Fraser Canyon. In the 2015 federal election,

Guneet (Geet) Grewal and Parmish Verma. Photo: Twitter Liberal candidate Jati Sidhu defeated his main rival, Conservative’s Brad Vis by just over 1,000 votes (16,625 vs 15,587). However, in the 2019 federal election, Vis defeated Sidhu by more than 7,000 votes (19,535 vs 12,299). Grewal’s campaign manager sent The VOICE the following information about her: “As a young woman of colour inspired by youth action and political activism, Geet Grewal is

looking to serve her community. She is fully committed to Justin Trudeau’s call to youth action and running as a first-time political candidate, with much to offer in the way of new ideas, passion, and community spirit. “Geet is the daughter of Indian immigrants, who worked in janitorial services cleaning and in construction to create incredible opportunities for her and her brother. Her family’s work ethic has helped them grow to become leaders in their community,

building and managing many of the developments we see today, including Matsqui’s Summit Centre. “In an effort to build on her parent’s legacy and improve the community that has given her and her family so much, Geet seeks to create more opportunities for future newcomers, middleclass Canadians, young families and professionals. Geet has been a long-time supporter of the Liberal party of Canada, she started volunteering on Liberal campaigns at the age of 13. “Growing our economic future, strengthening the middle class, reducing inequalities, and addressing the climate emergency, requires the hard work and political activism of youth. As a young professional, Geet is bold in her commitment to leading our country towards a sustainable future. “Geet holds a Bachelors in Law from the University of Leicester and a Masters in Law from Queen Mary University of London, United Kingdom. As we move our country forward in the recovery from the pandemic and a climate crisis, Geet will bring renewed leadership to the riding as she works to earn your vote as the Liberal candidate for MissionMatsqui-Fraser Canyon and move Canada forward.” SO who is Parmish Verma? An article in Hindustan Times stated: “Now a well-known face in the Punjabi pop industry, with hits like ‘Gaal ni kaddni’ and ‘Shada’, Parmish Verma, 31, a Patiala-born boy, has risen to the top after a lot of struggle.” According to that report, Verma failed a hotel management course

High speed a contributing factor in collision which killed three teenage hockey players, including Ronin Sharma SURREY RCMP announced on Friday that it has been determined that high speed was a factor in the early morning collision in Fraser Heights on August 21 that claimed the lives of three teenage hockey players. The investigation still ongoing. Ronin Sharma, Caleb Reimer and Parker Magnuson — who were members of the Delta Hockey Academy — were killed when their vehicle crashed into a tree in Surrey last week on Saturday. Sgt. Elenore Sturko said that investigators have determined that the vehicle was travelling at a speed significantly greater than the posted speed limit at the time of the collision. The Integrated Collison Analysis and Reconstructive Service (ICARS) and the Surrey RCMP Criminal Collison Investigation Team (CCIT) are continuing to investigate, working cooperatively with the BC Coroner’s Service. Further information is not expected to be released by Surrey RCMP. “The entire community has been greatly impacted by the loss of these three young men,” said Sturko. Our thoughts remain with their friends and family during this difficult time.” Surrey RCMP announced on August 21 that at 2:47 a.m., they along with Emergency Health Services and Surrey Fire Service responded to report of a single vehicle collision into a tree in the 16000-block of 104 Avenue. It was determined that all three occupants of the vehicle were dead. They were identified as three boys who were 16 and 17 years old. Later, Surrey RCMP said that the families of all the victims had been notified.

dent-athletes as they deal with this unthinkable tragedy. … The Delta School District has organized support services and resources for our student-athletes starting tomorrow. Thank you to everyone in the hockey community for sharing your support for our student-athletes during this difficult time,” The National Hockey League on Sunday issued a tweet: “The NHL sends its love and deepest condolences to the families of junior hockey players Caleb Reimer, Ronin Sharma and Parker Magnuson who tragically passed away in a car accident on Saturday. Rest in peace boys.” Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum said in a statement on Saturday: “Three young lives were taken away in this horrible accident. On behalf of Surrey City Council, we send our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the families. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time. I ask that the privacy of the families be respected as they cope with this tragic and sudden loss.”

Ronin Sharma

“Undoubtedly the community as a whole will be deeply impacted by this heartbreaking loss,” said RCMP Media Relations Officer Cpl. Vanessa Munn. “Support is being offered to the families of the boys and arrangements are being made to offer additional support to the community.” However, the Langley Rivermen Hockey Club last Saturday confirmed that Ronin Sharma, 16, was among the dead. They said in a statement: “The Langley Rivermen have gathered deeply devastating news that Ronin Sharma, a second year player, passed away this morning at the age of 16. We as an entire organization wish the Sharma fam-

Today, we lost a young man who made each and every one of our lives better as well as brighter every day he came to play the game we all love. We have also gathered two other young men lost their lives in the same incident and want to wish their families our most sincere condolences. We will miss you Ronin. May you rest in peace.” The following day, the Delta Hockey Academy said in a statement: “We are heartbroken to share the tragic news of the passing of three Delta Hockey Academy studentathletes early Saturday morning. … Our deepest sympathy goes out to the families of these young stu-

Vancouver Police investigate defacing of Komagata Maru Memorial as possible hate crime VANCOUVER Police are collecting evidence after someone defaced the city’s Komagata Maru Memorial Sunday. Police are treating the troubling incident as a possible hate crime. “Front-line officers and other specially-trained investigators worked throughout the evening yesterday, and will continue to gather evidence in this disturbing crime,” said Sgt. Steve Addison on Monday. “This investigation is a priority, and we are committed to finding out who is responsible and why they did this.” Vancouver Police immediately launched an investigation Sunday, after multiple online and media reports began showing white paint splattered on the memorial, located on the seawall in Coal Harbour. The graffiti, which included multiple white hand-prints, covered the names of people who had been aboard the Komagata Maru when it arrived in Vancouver in 1914, carrying nearly 400 people from India who were denied entry to Canada despite being citizens of the British Empire. “This monument is an important memorial to the people who traveled here seeking a better life and were wrongfully turned away because of racist policies,” added Addison. “It is disheartening that someone could show such disrespect to this important memorial, and we’d like anyone with information to come forward.” Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call 604717-0613. PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau said in a tweet: “The vandalism

and their families. I hope to see those responsible held accountable.” NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh tweeted: “The Komagata Maru represents a painful part of our history. This act of vandalism is wrong and it’s hurtful. This memorial embodies the perseverance and resilience of a community – that will remain long after the paint has been removed.”

of the Komagata Maru Memorial in Vancouver is a despicable act of hate. The memorial is a reminder of a dark chapter of racism in our history. Acts of hate like this have no place in our country and we will continue to fight against it.” B.C. Premier John Horgan tweeted: “I’m deeply upset and angry about this ignorant act. My

thoughts are with people in BC’s Punjabi community. We must understand our past to build a better future, and the names on this memorial deserve respect.” Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole said in a tweet: “It’s absolutely disgraceful that the Komagata Maru Memorial was defaced … This is an insult to those who were on the ship

BACK in December 2013, a visitor from India and his friend who were visiting the memorial monument were threatened by a white man who they said was very confrontational and attempted to engage in a physical altercation. The man then urinated on the memorial and was photographed. A police complaint was made. The man, who was tracked down by Vancouver Police, apologized. Then-Chief Constable Jim Chu told the media that the man appeared to have a “serious mental disorder”. He said the man was “an illicit drug user and would fit into the category studied recently in the Downtown Eastside of a severely addicted mentally ill person.” Why weren’t security cameras installed after that incident? ACCORDING to Wikipedia, the Komagata Maru incident involved a Japanese steamship on which a group of people from British India attempted to immigrate to Canada in April 1914, but most were denied entry and forced to return to Calcutta (present-day Kolkata). There, the Indian Imperial Police attempted to arrest the

group leaders. A riot ensued, and they were fired upon by the police, resulting in the deaths of 20 people. Komagata Maru sailed from British Hong Kong, via Shanghai, China, and Yokohama, Japan, to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on April 4, 1914, carrying 376 passengers from Punjab province in British India. The passengers comprised 337 Sikhs, 27 Muslims and 12 Hindus, all Punjabis and British subjects. Of these 376 passengers, 24 were admitted to Canada, but the other 352 were not allowed to disembark in Canada, and the ship was forced to leave Canadian waters. The ship was escorted by HMCS Rainbow, one of Canada’s first two naval vessels. This was one of several incidents in the early 20th century in which exclusion laws in Canada and the United States were used to exclude immigrants of Asian origin.

B.C. launches proof of vaccination STARTING September 13, proof of vaccination will be required in B.C. for people attending certain social and recreational settings and events. The Province announced on Monday that this important step will continue to increase the vaccination rate across the province and provide confidence to fully vaccinated people that those around them are also fully vaccinated. “Vaccines are our ticket to putting this pandemic behind us,” said Premier John Horgan. “So I call on all eligible unvaccinated British Columbians to roll up their sleeves to stop the spread, and help protect themselves, their loved ones and the people in their community. British Columbia has one of the strongest vaccination rates in Canada with 75% of eligible people now fully vaccinated, but there is still more work to do.” A new order from the Provincial Health Officer will require individuals to provide proof of vaccination to access a broad range of social, recreational, and discretionary events and businesses throughout the province. As of September 13, one dose of vaccine will be required for entry to these settings. By October 24, entry to these settings will require people to be fully vaccinated at least seven days after receiving both doses. To enter certain spaces, including indoor ticketed sporting events, indoor and patio dining in restaurants, fitness centres, casinos and indoor organized events, like conferences and weddings, people aged 12 and older will be required to show their proof of vaccination. “I am grateful to every single person who has taken the time to receive their COVID-19

vaccine,” said Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry. “While our vaccination rate continues to rise, we are still seeing waves of transmission primarily amongst those who are not fully vaccinated. These new measures will help reduce transmission and keep our communities safe and ensure we can continue to keep businesses open and safely enjoy much-needed social events.” A secure weblink will be provided and publicized before September 13, where people will be able to confidentially access their proof of vaccination. Individuals will be able to save a copy of their proof of vaccination to their phone to show it when entering or using designated businesses and events. Individuals who cannot access their proof of vaccination online will be provided with a secure alternative option. “Getting vaccinated keeps everyone in B.C. safe and stops the spread of COVID-19,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “And getting vaccinated is the best choice to protect yourself, the people you love and to ensure

you can continue to participate in these public and private events and settings. Our B.C. vaccine card is an essential interim action until we transition to a federally compli-

ant proof of vaccine.” By getting vaccinated prior to September 13, every British Columbian can continue to access these events and settings.

Speaker Raj Chouhan honoured with ‘Community Icon Award’ by PICS Society RAJ Chouhan, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of BC, was on Tuesday honoured and recognized with a ‘Community Icon Award’ and citation by PICS Society for being the first South Asian to be elected Speaker of any legislative assembly in Canada. Chouhan was also presented with a limited edition special commemorative coin minted in 2019 to celebrate Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s 550th birthday. “As a long-time community leader and role model, Mr. Chouhan has spent over 40 years fighting for the rights of the farmworkers, becoming the founding president of the Canadian Farmworkers Union (CFU). He worked tirelessly alongside PICS Society’s late founder and activist CEO Mr. Charan Gill to advocate for the underprivileged and vulnerable members of our society. Mr. Chouhan was the most deserving and ideal choice for PICS’ first Community Icon Award,” said Satbir Cheema, President and CEO of PICS Society.

Loaded firearm seized in Surrey from three men with ties to gang activity SURREY RCMP’s Gang Enforcement Team (SGET) arrested three men and seized a loaded firearm with help from bystanders. On August 21, the SGET attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the 16800-block of 60 Avenue

after observing the driver of an SUV violating the BC Motor Vehicle Act. The SUV failed to stop, and fled from police at high rate of speed. Additional SGET officers converged on the area. The driver and two passengers aban-

doned the SUV in traffic and began to run away. As officers left their own vehicles and pursued the men on foot, they were assisted by bystanders who provided crucial information on the suspects’ direction of travel. All three suspects were arrested and further investigation led to the seizure of a loaded handgun. All three men were identified by police and have ties to gang activity in the Lower Mainland. The Investigation is ongoing. Charges have not yet been laid; however, a report will be submitted to the BC Prosecution Service, police

said. “Members of our community have made it clear that gang activity is not welcome in Surrey,” said Sarbjit K. Sangha, Media Relations Officer for Surrey RCMP, on Thursday. “We are grateful for the assistance of the bystanders who witnessed this incident. Working together, we can send a strong message that our city is not a safe haven for criminal activity.” Surrey RCMP said that anyone with information about criminal activity in Surrey can help keep the community safe by reporting it to them at 604-599-0502.

At least 90 Afghans and 13 US service members killed, another 140 injured in bomb attack outside Kabul airport (CNN): The US still plans to end its mission in Afghanistan this month, the Pentagon said Friday, as the evacuation of US citizens and allies from the country enters its final desperate stage following a deadly bombing at Kabul’s airport killed at least 100 people. Far fewer people were at the airport Friday, and a source directly familiar with the Kabul airport operations told CNN the remaining focus is to get people with special last-minute access requests to the airport. But the source cautioned that officials were “unsure how many they can get in with so much Taliban coordination required.” At least 90 Afghans and 13 US service members died and another 140 were injured Thursday, an official with Afghanistan’s Ministry of Health said after the suicide bombing at Kabul airport. “We’re still planning on ending this mission at the end of the month,” spokesperson John Kirby said at a Pentagon briefing. “As we get closer and we are getting closer, you’re going see us begin to make those muscle movements to pull out our troops and some of our equipment, as appropriate with any retrograde,” he said, adding they want to “preserve as much capability for as long as we can, both in terms of the security footprint” and ability to evacuate people. The Pentagon clarified there was only one ex-

hope of getting onto one of the flights leaving the country during the final days of the airlift. “I saw bodies and body parts flying in the air like a tornado taking plastic bags ... into the air. I saw bodies, body parts, elderly and injured men, women and children scattered in the blast site,” the man, a former employee of an international development group with a US special immigrant visa, told Reuters news agency.

“It is not possible to see doomsday in this life, but today I saw doomsday, I witnessed it with my own eyes,” he said. Very few people were gathering at Kabul airport on Friday, a journalist working with CNN who took a trip through the city on Friday reported. People are not allowed to go to the main gate of the airport, the journalist said. Almost 500 yards before the main gate, the road is blocked by the Taliban with parked cars, they added. The rest of the city was “calm,” with traffic at lower levels than on previous days. All the main commercial centers were either closed or their business was very slow, the journalist reported. This is unsurprising because Friday marks the start of Afghanistan’s weekend. As well as the 13 US service members who were killed, 18 others were injured in the attack, the Pentagon said. ISIS in Khorasan, known as ISIS-K has claimed responsibility for the attack, but provided no evidence to support the claim. US officials have said the group was likely behind the atrocity. Speaking from the White House, President Joe Biden said evacuation efforts would not be stopped by the attack, and that he had ordered US military commanders to develop plans to strike “ISIS-K assets, leadership and facilities.” “We will not forgive. We will not forget. We will hunt you down and make you pay,” Biden said.

Mask mandate to reduce transmission, protect people in public spaces THE Province mandated on Tuesday that masks must be worn in all indoor public spaces throughout B.C. from Wednesday (August 25) to help slow the transmission of COVID-19 as B.C. prepares for the fall and respiratory illness season, the Province announced on Tuesday. A new order from the Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry will require people 12 and older to wear masks in indoor public settings, regardless of vaccination status. These settings include: * malls, shopping centres, coffee shops and retail and grocery stores; * liquor and drug stores; * airports, city halls, libraries, community and recreation centres; * restaurants, pubs and bars (unless seated); * on public transportation, in a taxi or ride-sharing vehicle; * areas of office buildings where services to the public are provided; * common areas of sport and fitness centres when not engaged in physical activity; * common areas of post-secondary institutions and non-profit organizations; and * inside schools for all K-12 staff, visitors and students in grades 4-12. This temporary order will be reassessed as the B.C. vaccine card requirement is fully implemented in certain social and recreational settings, as was announced on August 23. “As transmission of COVID-19 increases in B.C., primarily among unvaccinated people and in part due to the Delta variant, it’s important to take this extra temporary step to make indoor public spaces safer for everyone,” said Henry. “We need to continue doing the things that protect us, including wearing masks in indoor, public areas, practising hand hygiene regularly, staying away if we are sick and keeping a respectful distance from people. And most important of all, every person should get vaccinated to protect themselves, their loved ones and their community.”

For the purposes of this order, a mask or face covering is defined as a medical or non-medical mask that covers the nose and mouth. Face shields are not a substitute for a mask, as there is an opening below the mouth. “As unvaccinated people continue to get sick and hospitalized with COVID-19, we’re taking another step to ensure we overcome COVID-19 together, and that we move forward together,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “Our pandemic has always been about making good choices with the information we have and making the best choices to keep people safe. Now more than ever, we need to follow the advice and orders of the provincial health officer.” People who cannot wear a mask or who cannot put on or remove a mask without the assistance of others are exempt. A person may not be able to wear a mask for a psychological, behavioural or health condition, or due to a physical, cognitive or mental impairment. Masks may be removed temporarily in indoor public places to identify the individual wearing the mask, to consume food or beverage at a location designated for this purpose, while par-

ticipating in a sport or fitness activity in a sport facility or while receiving a personal or health service that requires the mask to be removed. Masks are not recommended for children under

the age of two, but should be encouraged for children aged two to 12 in public settings. Children older than 12 must wear a mask in a public indoor space, unless they are exempt.

Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole to increase EI benefits for seriously ill workers to 52 CONSERVATIVE Party Leader Erin O’Toole on Friday released his plan to increase EI benefits for seriously ill workers from 26 to 52 weeks. “Canadian workers should know we have their backs if they become seriously ill,” said O’Toole. “But all too often, workers see their EI run out after 26 weeks while battling life-threatening diseases like cancer. Canadian workers and their families deserve better. It is time for the govern-

ment to stand up for workers and their health.” With Canada’s Recovery Plan, Canada’s Conservatives said they will ensure that workers who need to take sick leave receive the support they need to recover and support their families by increasing EI sickness benefits from 26 weeks to 52 weeks for those suffering from a serious illness. “You can’t have a healthy economy without healthy workers. Canada’s Conservatives

have a plan to put workers at the front of the country’s recovery and get the econo-

my back on track,” O’Toole said. “Together, we can secure the future.”

Erin O’Toole introduces plan to address opioid crisis CONSERVATIVE Party Leader Erin O’Toole on Sunday introduced his plan to address the opioid crisis as a national emergency and help Canadians struggling with addiction. Every day, 17 Canadians die from opioidrelated deaths. Since the onset of COVID-19, opioid-related deaths have almost doubled. “Families across this country are mourning lost children, lost parents, lost partners,” said O’Toole. “As Prime Minister, I will treat the opioid epidemic as the urgent health crisis that it is.” To help those struggling with addiction and save lives, Canada’s Recovery Plan will: * Invest $325 million over the next three year to create 1,000 residential drug treatment beds and build 50 recovery community centres across the country. * Enhance the delivery of culturally appropriate addiction treatment and prevention ser-

vices in First Nations communities with high needs. * Provide $1 billion over five years to boost funding for Indigenous mental health and drug treatment programs. * Partner with the provinces to ensure that Naloxone kits are available for free across Canada. * Reorient the Canadian Drugs and Substances Strategy towards ensuring that every person struggling with addiction has the opportunity to recover. “As a country, we must recognize that mental health is health,” O’Toole said. “Only Canada’s Conservatives have a plan to make historic investments in mental health and addiction.” (For a backgrounder, visit our website voiceonline.com)

Jagmeet Singh announces plan to eliminate prescription drug costs WHILE visiting Thunder Bay, Ontario, on Friday, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh announced an NDP government would immediately move forward with a plan to make free prescription medication available to everyone in Canada. His plan would save an average family $550 a year. “Millions of Canadians can’t afford to take the medications they need. They skip doses, cut their pills in half, or even go without medication entirely,” said Singh. “For more than two

decades, the Liberals have promised to bring in pharmacare. It’s a life and death situation, but after six years, Justin Trudeau has refused to take a step toward making his pharmacare promises a reality.” Singh’s plan would expand healthcare to include quality prescription drug coverage for all Canadians, regardless of their job, age, location, health status or income. By negotiating prices with pharmaceutical companies, an NDP government would help make pre-

scription drugs free. This would also save provincial health systems money, help employers save money on employee benefits, and help Canadians stay healthy. Canadians pay the third highest prices for prescription drugs in the world. Trudeau has failed to stand up to big pharmaceutical corporations and fight for regular families, Singh said. “Canada is the only wealthy country in the world that has a universal health care system

without universal prescription insurance coverage,” said Singh. “Justin Trudeau promised to lower drug costs in 2016. Instead of keeping his promise and helping to make life more affordable for people, Trudeau sided with big pharma and helped them jack up their corporate profits.” Singh pledged to begin working with provinces immediately to deliver a universal, singlepayer, public pharmacare program for all Canadians, with a target start date of 2022.

Joined by young people who participated in the 2019 climate march, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh on Monday called out Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau for making a speech at the march two years ago, but making decisions since then that have increased Canada’s emissions and made the climate emergency even worse. Jagmeet Singh commits to cut cell phone and internet bills WHILE visiting Windsor, Ontario, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh on Wednesday released his plan to lower cell phone and internet bills, saving the average family $1,000. While Liberal Party Leader Justin Trudeau has talked a lot, after six years as prime minister, he is still siding with large telecom corporations who are charging Canadians some of the highest fees in the world, said Singh.

Singh committed to work with the CRTC to force telecom giants to reduce the prices on all their plans and cap their fees below the global average. His plan also includes requiring telecommunication corporations to offer unlimited wireless data options at an affordable rate, so no Canadian is hit with a surprise bill. Have your say on B.C.’s paid sick leave program BY AMAN SINGH NDP MLA for Richmond-Queensborough SINCE the beginning of the pandemic, our

number one priority has been the health and safety of people in B.C. That’s why we’re launching a permanent paid sick leave program and looking for your input to

shape it. You can visit this link to take part right now: engage.gov.bc.ca/paidsickleave. One of the most critical lessons we’ve learned is the importance of people staying home whenever they are sick. This is an essential part of slowing the spread of COVID-19. But many workers, especially those in lower-paying jobs, don’t have paid sick days and can’t afford to lose a day’s pay when they are sick. Nobody should have to choose between paying rent and staying home when they are sick. And that’s why our government is taking action to implement permanent paid sick days for all workers in B.C. Earlier this year, we created a temporary COVID-19 paid sick day program for up to three days of leave. This was designed to fill the gaps left by the federal government’s sickness benefit. Starting on January 1, 2022, the BC government will launch a permanent paid sick day program, so that workers in B.C. will be supported when they need to take time

off for illness or injury. We want to make sure this permanent program will meet the needs of people in B.C. So we are asking for your input on what the program should look like. We are inviting workers and employers to take part in the consultation by completing a short online survey. This is your chance to have your say. You can complete the survey by going to engage.gov.bc.ca/paidsickleave. You can complete it in English, Punjabi, Korean, Tagalog, or Traditional or Simplified Chinese, and it only takes a few minutes. No matter what industry you work in, or whether or not you already have paid sick days – we want to hear what you think. All the information collected will be kept anonymous, and we won’t ask for any personal identifying information. We know that women, youth, and People of Colour are more likely to work in lowwage jobs without benefits or paid sick days. Creating a made-in-B.C. paid sick day program for all workers will make our province a fairer and more equitable place to live. The consultation period is open until September 14, so don’t delay. Take the time to fill in the short online survey and let us know what you would like to see in the paid sick leave program. If you’re a worker, tell us how many days should be included and what would make it easier for you to stay home when you’re sick. If you’re a business owner, tell us how it would impact you and your employees. The feedback we collect will help shape the different options we consider for the program. After the survey is completed, we’ll post the proposed models for public comment. I hope you take the time to participate and have your voice heard. Together, we can build a better province for everyone.

Liberals will ask financial institutions to contribute more to help more Canadians afford a home works for everyone. That’s why we’re going to ask our largest financial institutions, who have recovered faster and stronger than many other industries, to pay a little more so we can invest in Canadians and help them find a home of their own.” To help Canadians find a home and rebuild a Canada that works for everyone, a re-elected Liberal government will: * Raise the corporate income tax rate paid by Canada’s largest and most profitable banks and insurance companies by 3 percentage points on

all earnings over $1 billion; and * Establish the Canada Recovery Dividend so these institutions contribute more over the next four years of Canada’s recovery. In total, these measures will generate a minimum of $2.5 billion per year over the next four years, beginning in 2022-23. On Tuesday, Trudeau and the Liberal team had announced their three-point housing plan, “A Home. For Everyone.” For more election announcements by Trudeau over the past week, visit voiceonline.com.

Liberals move forward to finish the fight against COVID-19 and get the job done on vaccines

A re-elected Liberal government will move forward to finish the fight against COVID-19 and get the job done on vaccines, to keep Canadians safe and healthy, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau announced on Friday. He said that when the pandemic began, the Liberal team moved quickly to procure vaccines so Canadians could stay safe and healthy from the virus. Because of their hard work, they secured enough doses so that every eligible Canadian could be vaccinated by July 2021 — two months ahead of schedule. Now, as our kids head back to school and more people go back to work, we need to ensure all eligible Canadians get their vaccines to keep everyone safe and healthy.

“Early on in the pandemic, our government got to work to make sure every Canadian had access to a vaccine. Thanks to this, and the hard work of Canadians, we’re among the top countries in the world for COVID-19 vaccinations,” said Trudeau. “But we can’t stop there. We need to get the job done on vaccines, and ensure all eligible Canadians get their two doses, so we all can be protected from the virus and go back to normal. This has to be our top priority.” To keep moving forward and get the job done on vaccines, a re-elected Liberal government will take several measures.

“We know how excited students and families are about being back in school with extracurricular and sports programs and how important it is for children to be connected to their teachers and friends on a full-time basis,” said Jennifer Whiteside, Minister of Education, on Tuesday. “We also know we can do this safely, even as the pandemic continues to present challenges. B.C. was one of the few jurisdictions in Canada to keep schools open and safe last year thanks to the monumental efforts of everyone in the education system. The precautions we are announcing today allow students to continue learning in school with safeguards in place, so they have every opportunity to achieve their best.” Research by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) last year noted a significant impact on students from remote learning, including interrupted learning, increased child stress, decreased connection, increased loneliness and mental and emotional health effects. Fraser Health Authority showed that after a resumption of in-class learning, schools were not significant sources of COVID-19 transmission. In addition to the continuation of indoor mask requirements for all K-12 staff, visitors and students in grades 4 to 12, changes to the health and safety measures also include the ability for health authorities to introduce additional regional measures specific to individual schools or school districts in instances where community transmission rates are higher. There will be greater opportunities for school sports and extracurricular activities, continued increased ventilation and improvements in schools, and daily cleaning and disinfecting protocols, along with a continued focus on hand hygiene. Students will continue to be required to complete daily health checks and stay home when feeling sick. Rapid response teams will continue to operate throughout B.C., working with health authorities and school districts to provide support and review school communicable disease plans to keep schools safe. “We know last school year was challenging in many different ways for B.C. students, but they persevered and finished the school year strong,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry, Provincial Health Officer. “While we are encouraged to see rising vaccination rates in most parts of the province, we need every eligible British Columbian, including children and youth aged 12 to 19, to receive vaccinations as they begin the new school year.” School districts will continue to ensure all mechanical heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are designed, operated and maintained to their standards and specifications so they continue to work properly. All school HVAC systems will continue to be regularly inspected and, moving forward, provincial funding will continue to be made available to upgrade or replace HVAC systems through routine capital programs. A total of $87.5 million has been used to improve school ventilation in B.C. schools, including $77.5 million through provincial routine capital funding specifically for HVAC system upgrades or replacements in 2020-21 and 2021-22. The projects supported through this funding include full boiler and air-handling system replacements, larger ductwork, updating occupancy sensors and direct digital control units for building automation controlling air-flow rates and portable HEPA filtration units in classrooms. Plus, in the 2020-21 school year, school districts used $10 million in federal pandemic-specific funding to upgrade more than 45,000 ventilation filters in B.C. schools. The updated provincial K-12 communicable disease guidelines were developed in collaboration with the BCCDC, Office of the Provincial Health Officer and K-12 education steering committee, which includes rightsholders and education partners. The public health guidance for child care settings remain in effect. The Province says the best way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is for all British Columbians who are eligible to get vaccinated. Health authorities will target students, teachers and school staff in vaccination campaigns over the coming weeks. “As part of your back-to-school preparations, we encourage youth to walk in now to get vaccinated at one of B.C.’s vaccination clinics, or go to a pop-up or mobile or community vaccine event around the province,” said Dr. Penny Ballem, executive lead of B.C.’s immunization effort. “As students, parents and families prepare and plan for back to school, they can take advantage of the many locations and opportunities to receive a first or second dose. It’s more convenient than ever to get a COVID-19 vaccine.” The return to school is being supported with additional resources. In June, the Ministry of Education announced $43.6 million in COVID-19 relief funding for the 2021-22 school year. This included $25.6 million in new one-time funding to support health and safety measures, First Nations and Métis students, mental health services and independent schools. The remaining $18 million was allocated for school districts to address learning loss due to the pandemic.

decision on elevation was not taken without the Chief Minister’s approval. “We have given the party leadership to Sidhu but not the Congress to him,” Rawat was categorically clear in saying about any move to change the

Chief Minister ahead of the assembly polls slated in early 2022. The four ministers -- Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Charanjit Singh Channi and Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria -- a day earlier said here with the support of at least 20 other Congress legislators their main demand was to ‘replace’ Amarinder Singh. They said they wanted to apprise the high command over the widespread dissidence among the party ranks. They were categorically clear in saying after the closed-door meeting that it was high time for the party to opt for a change of guard. Their main grudge, among others, with the Chief Minister and his aides was unfulfilled poll promises, particularly the delay in action in the 2015 sacrilege and police firing cases.

Punjab polls to be fought under Amarinder’s helm: Rawat

Chandigarh (IANS): Just ahead of meeting four Congress dissident cabinet ministers and three legislators, Punjab affairs in charge and AICC general secretary Harish Rawat on Wednesday clarified that the 2022 Punjab Assembly election would be fought under the leadership of Amarinder Singh amid signs of revolt by the Navjot Singh Sidhu faction. The rebel legislators reached Dehradun in the morning to apprise Rawat about the mood of the public against the Amarinder Singh-led government in the state. They, among 20-odd party legislators, have been demanding replacement of Amarinder Singh as he failed to fulfill the 2017 poll promises. Rawat told the media that Amarinder Singh had welcomed party state President Navjot Singh Sidhu himself, and the

‘Qatar to play important role in Afghanistan crisis and protecting India’s interests’ New Delhi (IANS): Amid the rapidly changing situation in Afghanistan after the Taliban seized power on August 15, experts feel that Qatar can play a vital role in the ongoing crisis and it can also be instrumental in protecting India’s interests in the war-torn nation. The experts also said that the way the US has deferred its planned exit from Afghanistan with an August 31 deadline, the diplomats of Qatar have been active to persuade the Afghan militia to consider the American forces’ plea who wanted to stay there till the evacuation of its last citizen. Former diplomat Gautam Mukhopadhya agrees that Qatar has been playing a vital role in resolving the crisis and they have convinced stakeholders for negotiations. “Qatar is playing an important role in the present crisis in Afghanistan but the results of their efforts are yet to be seen,” he said. West Asia expert and senior journalist Qamar

Agha also said that Qatar has a lot of influence on the Taliban and it also played an important role during the negotiations between the insurgents and Americans, with the then Afghan government without interfering in the internal affairs in the war-ravaged country. “Qatar has also helped the Palestinians, solving their problems with Israel and tried to mediate with the Hamas in the Palestinian territory. So Qatar has played an important role in negotiating Afghan militia for evacuating the Indians and other countries’ citizens who were working in NATO forces in Afghanistan recently,” Agha said. He also said that the Qatari diplomats have achieved a certain level of diplomatic practices which had helped certain issues in the Arab World and in Afghanistan too. “Now, after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, Qatar can really play a very important role. Secondly, India has a very good relation with this

country and can sort out many of our problems, if needed,” he added. Agha also hoped that not only in evacuating the Indians from Afghanistan, Qatar can be helpful in protecting India’s interests too. It can also counter Pakistan if they try to interfere in Afghanistan and contain any nefarious activities against India. “India also has good relations with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the two Gulf nations that can also help us protect our interests in the war-torn country,” he added. However, another foreign affairs expert Sushant Sareen does not hope much from Qatar in resolving the Afghan crisis. “Qatar has been doing this in all hot spots in the world especially in the Middle East and it has outsized its diplomacy by using money with different groups who have issues with the other confronting sections and mediated among them.

It’s true that it has taken the position of that what Saudi Arabia or the UAE used to have, but nothing substantial has come up after its diplomatic intervention,” Sareen observed. “They (Qatar) have a dubious role as they have an US base in their country but they also host a Taliban office. They were also funding the Islamic State ultras despite being on the US side. It has also good relations with the Taliban and had played a very critical role even in Afghanistan; they have a close connection with Pakistan which hugely depends on its gas requirement. So that also gives Qatar a degree of influence in the whole crisis,” he said. “Which of the peace process have resulted positive, not even one?” Sareen said: “Yes, it can influence the Taliban leadership in protecting India’s interest in that country. At least they can persuade them to keep on Indian projects going on.”

Pakistan, India issue diplomatic visas to each other after 28-month gap New Delhi (IANS): Islamabad and New Delhi have issued assignment visas to each other’s diplomats after a gap of around 28 months as both sides are seeking to nomalise ties that have been on ice

since 2019. Pakistan and India have issued a large number of assignment visas to each other’s diplomatic staff in recent weeks, the Express Tribune reported. Both countries have issued vi-

sas on all applications submitted by March 15 this year. Pakistan issued visas to 33 Indian officials, while seven Pakistani diplomats received assignment visas from India. Sources said there was a pos-

sibility of an agreement between Pakistan and India to issue visas on assignment applications by June 15. The two countries are likely to issue more visas to each other’s diplomats after that. All countries issue assignment visas to diplomats and embassy staff from other countries. In January this year, top intelligence officers from the two countries held secret talks in Dubai, reopening a back channel of diplomacy aimed at a modest roadmap to normalising ties over the next several months, the report said. Later in February, the two countries’ militaries announced an unexpected joint ceasefire. The UAE’s envoy to Washington confirmed in April that the Gulf state was mediating between India and Pakistan to help the nuclear-armed rivals reach a “healthy and functional” relationship.

Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba said in a virtual discussion with Stanford University’s Hoover Institution that the UAE had played a role “in bringing Kashmir escalation down and created a ceasefire, hopefully ultimately leading to restoring diplomats and getting the relationship back to a healthy level”. “They might not sort of be-

come best friends but at least we want to get it to a level where it’s functional, where it’s operational, where they are speaking to each other,” he added. In March this year, Chief of Amy Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa called on India and Pakistan to “bury the past” and move towards cooperation.

Referendum of Khalsa panth, says Sukhbir on DSGMC win Chandigarh (IANS): Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal on Wednesday hailed the victory of his party in the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) elections as “a forceful referendum of the Khalsa Panth in favour of the panthic identity and religious commitment of the party”. Addressing the media here, Badal said the Sikh community totally rejected the Congress backed and BJP-sponsored groups, including of Sukhdev Dhindsa and Paramjit Singh Sarna.

Sukhbir Singh Badal (third from right in front row) with victorious SAD members.

“The BJP, via Dhindsa and Manjit Singh G.K., won two out of 46 seats while Congress, via Paramjit Singh Sarna, won 14 out of 46. This is just the beginning of the storm which will sweep aside both the Congress and AAP in Punjab in the 2022 Assembly elections.” “I am deeply grateful to Sikh sangat all over the world for the blessings and support we continue to receive from them. I wish to reiterate my total commitment to promotion of panthic ideals,” he added. Badal thanked the “entire Delhi

SAD team led by Manjinder Singh Sirsa for living up to the expectations of the Sikh sangat and the entire Khalsa Panth throughout the world”. “The tireless zeal with which Sirsa stood by the Sangat, including COVID-19 victims, farmers and Sikh refugees from Afghanistan, has won the hearts of devout Sikh masses,” he said. He announced that Sirsa would be nominated as a member of the DSGMC on behalf of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).

Amarinder wants repatriation of martyr Udham Singh’s pistol from Britain Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has written to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to seek from the Britain government repatriation of the personal effects of legendary martyr Shaheed Udham Singh, including his pistol and personal

diary. Amarinder Singh, in his letter to Jaishankar, appealed to him to take up this matter with the UK government so that the nation is able to express its highest gratitude to the martyr and great patriot while celebrating the 75th anni-

versary of India’s Independence. “You may be aware that it was with this very pistol that he avenged the dastardly act of the erstwhile British Government at Jallianwala Bagh, where hundreds of unarmed and innocent Indians were shot dead under

the charge of the then Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, Michael O’Dwyer,” reads the letter. “It was with this pistol that Shaheed Udham Singh brought Michael O’ Dwyer to justice in the Caxton Hall, London,” wrote the Chief Minister.

Amarinder Singh further said, “It is also known that Shaheed Udham Singh used to keep a diary, as his personal log, which also deserves to be brought back to India, so that the people of the country could derive motivation and inspiration from it.”

Nakodar: The Nakodar police have registered a case against Punjabi singer Gurdas Maan under Section 295A of IPC for “hurting religious sentiments of Sikh community”. Despite offering apology by Gurdas Maan, also chairman of Dera Murad Shah, Nakodar, over a recent controversy involving him, some Sikhs organisations remained adamant and wanted cops to book the Punjabi singer. Hundreds of Sikh activists headed by Satkar Committee first assembled in a gurdwara in Nakodar then proceeded to Jalandhar to block vehicular traffic to raise the demand of registration of a case against Gurdas Maan today. Senior Superintendent of Police (Rural) Naveen Singla said a First Information Report was registered on the

complaint of Satkar Committee member Paramjit Singh. When contacted, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Nakodar Poonam Singh said all required preventive steps are being taken to maintain communal harmony and peace in the Nakodar sub division. Punjabi singer Maan had landed in a controversy as members of the Satkar Committee had lodged a police complaint after his video had gone viral in which he was heard saying that the chief of a dera and Nakodar Sain Laddi Shah was from the descendants of third Sikh guru, Guru Amar Dass. The committee members had demanded that a case be lodged against the singer or else they would hold a demonstration on the issue across the state.

Mercedes - Benz AMG A35 Premium Hot hatchback is a slayer! Review by Veeno Dewan. Coming from the U.K, I was raised on hot hatch back cars, whether three or five doors, they were always such fun and affordable as new cars and even cheaper with a few years on the odometer. I had a Lotus engineered Sunbeam, Renault 5 GTM, Volkswagen Golf GTI, as well as a Ford Cosworth engined XR3! Back in the day there was no such thing as a premium hot hatch, so it was a great surprise to come across the 2021 Mercedes- Benz AMG A35 hatchback. A Canada-only model, with the AMG treatment. Our gloss back tester looked sleep and slippery sitting on 18-inch black wheel rims with a rear spoiler. At the back, the large chrome exhaust tips signals its bad intentions. The A35 comes with the AMG sport tuned suspension, and the optional AMG ride control with 3-stage dampers. Also added are uprated steering and braking systems. At the heart of the matter is a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine with 302 Horsepower producing 295 lb.-ft. of torque mated to an AMG Speedshift DCT 7-speed dual-clutch transmission linked to 4MATIC AWD. In this configuration, the AMG A35 can scoot from 0- to 100 km/h in only 4.7 seconds. The cabin is nearly identical to the Mercedes-Benz A-Class with sleek thin 10.25-inch screens that display driver information and infotainment, the ultra-cool radial turbine vents, and design elements in chrome, satin metal, and seats in Artico leather. The panoramic roof provides a welcome feeling of space inside the vehicle. Behind the chunky AMG steering wheel, the all-digital

Indo-Canadian Voice Main | Saturday, Aug. 28, 2021 info screens stretches across most of the dashboard all the way to the centre console. To liven things up even further, there are is ambient lighting with 64 mood lighting colours available to choose from. The panoramic sunroof, power front seats, dualzone climate control, blind-spot warnings, ambient lighting, and keyless start are all standard. Interior –wise, there is a neat, simple cabin that’s filled with high quality materials. Equipment levels are high with a plethora of convenience and full gadgets. Of note is the is the excellent new MBUX feature with the “Hey, Mercedes” voice activated functionality added to the infotainment system that allows you to do such things as turn on the heated steering wheel, play a certain song, or navigate you to the nearest restaurant should you get the munchies. There are: steering wheel mounted controls and paddle shifters, leather seating surfaces, raised contrast stitching, soft touch plastics, black detailed trim panels, and a premium audio system with 10 speakers including a subwoofer. The A35 also features a small charge pad for your phone just below the centre console ahead of the gear selector. Bluetooth streaming audio, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are all compatible. The rear cabin is roomy with decent enough seat comfort and good rear seat leg room. On the road, the well-engineered chassis and powerful brakes also contribute to the overall performance of the vehicle. The tuned four-cylinder motor with its AMG massaging offers 302 hp and 295 lb-ft from a compact 2.0 litre turbo engine with reduced friction, and high-pressure Direct Injection enabling 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds is part of the magic. There is so much eager acceleration and lots of usable torque. It is a pleasant, carefree car to drive with nimble handling and quick reflexes thanks to solid engineering. The Sport-tuned steering is precise and responsive with a good lock and return to center action. The engine and transmission are thoroughly engineered with AMG technology. The 7- speed automatic Speedshift transmission modes offer partial ignition cutoffs during upshifts and rev-matched down-

shifts for more exciting driving. The different driver settable drive modes offer a range of settings from five different drive modes. The default mode, “Comfort”, allows the driver to enjoy a stable, smooth ride, with no drama acceleration, although the growl from the turbocharger is always a welcome sound effect! Sport” and “Sport+” sharoens up the engine responses and transmission shift point parameters for quicker acceleration, and gear changes awhile disabling the ECO start/stop function to inactive. “Individual” mode allows manual setting programs and a “Slippery” driving program smooths out the A 35’s handling on slippery roads, The 4Matic all-wheel-drive system provided tremendous levels of grip. That AWD system works by default in FWD mode but can transfer 50 percent of the engine torque to the rear wheels when needed. Nothing much to complain about. Overall, there is great performance, features, quality, and value for the price. So much fun to drive and own. Highly recommended. The 2021 AMG A35 4MATIC Priced from $49,800 Plus options $3200.final price: $53,000 More info at www.mercedes-benz.ca

New 2021 Honda Monkey Bike comes to Canada! Markham, ON: Honda Canada confirmed recently that for the first time ever, the venerable and extremely popular Honda Monkey motorcycle will be available in Canada. The pocket-sized Monkey has a six decades old history, a fact that no doubt contributed to the enthusiastic reception that this current iteration enjoys, and Canadians have been asking for. Beginning as a Japanese amusement-park ride, the Monkey has captured the hearts of generations the world over, offering enjoyable, accessible mobility through a likable design, tiny dimensions, and low weight. Today, the desire for an easy-to-handle motorcycle that puts smiles on faces remains alive and well. A master of fun, the 2022 Monkey builds on that passion, while opening the door to the next generation of enthusiasts.

The Monkey is powered by a torquey new engine with a fifth gear, the same powerplant as the new 2022 Grom that was announced last March. When it comes to miniMOTO models, Honda is an industry leader, and there’s no better example of that than the legendary Monkey. Its latest generation honors history and tradition with looks and spirit that are faithful to the Monkey’s earliest concept, but it touts modern features that help it perform well and run reliably—a combination that has proven to be extremely popular with customers around the world. It’s yet another example of Honda producing not only the most diverse lineup of miniMOTO models, but also the most capable. A hit with both the new generation of enthusiasts and nostalgic riders seeking a trip down memory lane (its heritage extends back

to 1961, when the original version was used in a Honda-owned Japanese amusement park called Tama Tech), the Monkey oozes fun and charm in a pintsize package. Now, for the first time, the Monkey is available in Canada and comes with a fifth gear for more comfortable cruising, thanks to a new, modern engine with a wider spread of gear ratios and a 37-tooth final-drive sprocket (previously 34). The changes provide not only peppy acceleration from low speeds but increased top speed as well. The 124cc two-valve, overhead-cam, air-cooled engine has an undersquare design, with a narrower bore and longer stroke. The new Monkey bike will be available from MSRP: $5,299 in 2- Tone: Pearl Nebula Red / Knight Silver Metallic. Availability: September 2021.

Mississauga, ON: Getting to the world’s most remote places just got easier with the restyled 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. Its navigation system features what3words location technology, enabling drivers to input and get directions to any 3 metre square in the world using just three words. And in a world first, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is the first car company to offer what3words offline through its built-in TomTom navigation system. what3words is a very simple way to identify exact locations. Every 3 metre square in the world has been given a unique combination of three random words. For example, ///boom.manuals.trample points you to the head office of Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada, and ///undermines.honestly.douses is an awe-inspiring remote location in the interior of BC. In the true spirit of adventure and innovation, Mitsubishi Motors has teamed up with what3words to introduce the unique location technology to the refreshed Eclipse Cross* in 17 languages, from English and French to Finnish and Thai. what3words gives drivers the ability to navigate to off-the-beaten track

places without an address, and to pinpoint precise locations such as specific entrances and parking spots. what3words’ AutoSuggest technology helps drivers to identify and correct any input mistakes, so they can drive off feeling reassured they’re heading to the correct destination. And in a world first, what3words works offline in the Eclipse Cross. No app, data or cellular connection is required to input or navigate to a what3words address. Chris Sheldrick, CEO and co-founder of what3words, added that “it can be difficult and frustrating putting an address into a navigation system and many of the most amazing places in the world don’t have a street address. Even if you have a building number, address and postal code,

you can still be left driving around trying to work out exactly where the entrance is. Now, when a drivers enter a what3words address, they can be confident that the location is accurate to 3 metres every time, and it’s as simple as typing in status.deep.mountain” what3words is used by businesses all around the world from ride-hailing apps, delivery companies, hotels, sports stadiums and emergency services. National partners include over 40 communication centres across Canada, Ontario Parks, and the Manitoba Forestry. Individuals are also using the free what3words app to navigate the world more easily and to meet friends in places without addresses such as parks and beaches.

Millennials to drive housing demand

Over the next decade (20192029), there will be 861,000 job openings in BC, according to the British Columbia Labour Market Outlook. 69% of these future job openings will be to replace workers leaving the labour force. 598,000 job openings will be due to retiring workers will need to be replaced. 31% of the 10-year total job openings will be new jobs created through economic growth. Employment in BC is expected to at a rate of one per cent annually and will reach almost 2.8 million by 2029.

How will employers find workers? Canada-wide, our country plans to welcome more than 400,000 immigrants this year alone, as well as in subsequent years and many of these professional, technical, and service workers will want to buy homes. Millennial newcomers want to own homes A significant proportion of these newcomers will be millennials, those born 1980-2000,

and soon to overtake Generation X (born 1965-1979) as the province’s largest labour group. A whopping 80 per cent of millennials across Canada want to own a home according to Rented dreams: the truth behind millennial home ownership, a survey from Abacus Data. Just 27 per cent currently own the home where they live, while 73 per cent either rent (40 per cent) or live with their parents (33 per cent). “Millennials’ desire to become homeowners is as strong as previous generations,” said Keith Stewart, Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver economist. “While buying a home has never been an easy feat - millennials face a very different housing market than their parents did decades ago. The general shortage of housing, and consequential high prices, leave younger would-be buyers needing to save multiple times their income to pull together their down payment.” 43% of millennials are looking to buy a home in the next five years. This number comprises an equal number of singles and

those who are in long-term relationships; 33% of millennials are looking to move into a fully detached home; 25% are seeking apartments or condominiums; and 17% are looking for townhomes and 17% are looking for semi-detached homes. Their first choice for a home is three bedrooms and two baths, all for $300,000 or less. The MLS® benchmark price of a home Canada-wide is $679,000. Nearly half of millennial homeowners have incomes over $75,000 and many make over $100,000 a year, significantly higher than non-home owners. This appears to confirm a correlation between higher incomes and home ownership. Top factors for choosing current home, according to a new CMHC survey: 28% said price / affordability; 13% indicated the type of home; 10% said type of neighbourhood; and 10% cited the overall living space of house. COMMON SENSE HEALTH – W. GIFFORD-JONES, MD AND DIANA GIFFORD-JONES

Summer’s last hurrah the most dangerous

ARE you gearing up to have some fun? It’s the stick-in-the-mud who dulls the sense of adventure, suggesting you think twice. But the dullard may be the wise one as the summer closes out with the traditional long weekend. Labour Day Weekend originated in North America in the early 1880s to recognize workers. The holiday marked the establishment of the 40-hour work week, or 8 hours of work daily for 5 days and then two days of rest. Labour unions of the day had it right. They advocated each day should have a balance of 8 hours of work, 8 hours of recreation, and 8 hours of rest – and the 2-day weekend offered a healthy break to refresh. But the extra day of celebration marking the 3-day weekend at the end of summer is a mixed story. For all the fun and games of the last summer hurrah, there is a higher-than-average rate of injury and death. Water is a common theme to many of the saddest tragedies. Drownings occur from boating accidents, misfortune at beaches, and the heart-crushing incidents of negligence involving the family swimming pool. It is an awful statistic that 350 children under the age of 5 drown in pools every year in the U.S. In Canada, with a population only a tenth of the size, a similar number of people drown in the country’s beautiful natural bodies of water each year. Inevitably, in both countries, news following Labour Day Weekend laments these kinds of tragedies. But the greatest risk comes from traffic accidents. From the Friday evening start of the long Labour Day weekend, through the end of the day on Monday, we can expect about 500 people to die on North American roads. More than 54,000 people injured in traffic accidents will require medical assistance. We know why. The trendline in holidayperiod, alcohol-impaired driving fatalities has been gradually moving down from 60% in 1983 to 38% in 2019. But still, too many people are drinking and driving, especially on Labour Day weekend. The advice is clear. Don’t let loved ones drink and drive. Take action if you see anyone who has been drinking or using drugs get behind the wheel. Distracted driving increases the risk of accident by 500%, so leave the phone alone. Put it in the trunk if you struggle to comply. Don’t let inexperienced young drivers transport their friends, who unwittingly can be the most dangerous of all distractions. If driving is a necessity, then slow down. It’s a long weekend; there’s lots of time. High speed is the direct cause of 27% of traffic fatalities in Canada. Above all, wear the seatbelt. The evidence is overwhelming that seatbelts save lives. There are other sources of tragedy when the focus should be on good times with friends and family. Motorcycles, ATVs, jet skis, and even the common bicycle are all associated with fun. But just as the last run down the ski mountain at the end of a winter day claims a higher rate of falls, these activities yield more accidents during the last weekend of the summer. The holiday weekend sees more dog

bites than usual too. Fires are yet another major concern, whether from grills, campfires, or fireworks. When cautions are abandoned, people will be harmed and property damaged. Absent, broken or poorly maintained smoke alarms will mean the difference between preventable deaths and disaster. So take it easy this weekend ahead, and look out for the ones you love.
