FIRST RAF ENG TECH (WEAPONS) TO TRAIN UKRAINIAN FORCES

Cpl Kev Smith of Armament Engineering Flight was the first RAF Eng Tech (W) to deploy to Wathgill Camp, Yorkshire, tasked at short notice and building a functional Armoury from scratch upon arrival.
Using his vast trade knowledge, Cpl Smith organised the required space, implementing a vital maintenance area, allowing for quick rectification tasks to be carried out. Concurrent activities were possible thanks to his training of three ORs under his command in the aspects of running an RAF Armoury. Cpl Smith also took command and trained two REME Class 1 Armourers on best practise repair techniques on the L85A2 and L85A3 platforms when they arrived.

Cpl Smith had the opportunity to become familiarised on the AK47 weapon platform during his 4-month deployment, something which very few RAF Armourers have done. Cpl Smith’s greatest accomplishment was being given the time to train Ukrainian personnel on quick, efficient and necessary methods of cleaning their weapons so that they could fully function when needed.
Cpl Smith said: “It was an honour being able to assist the RAF Regiment with their tailored programme for our partner forces. Seeing the Ukrainians so enthusiastic about training and getting ready to go back to their country to defend and protect their families and homes was an incredible feeling I will probably never experience again.”
