UPPER SCHOOL OFFERINGS GRADES 9-12 These courses are designed for students who will be entering 9-12th grades.

US01 Creative Writing Workshop with Ms. Mortensen July 5-8, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon Explore the art of writing and create your own fictional pieces. Experiment with different writing styles through creative exercises to discover your options as a writer. This workshop involves “field trips” to find appropriate fodder for writing. The remainder of the time is spent drafting and reviewing each others’ work to create a portfolio. Join this popular summer course taught by Ms. Mortensen, a member of the school’s English department. Cost $225 US02 Pre-Chemistry with Mr. Sappenfield August 8-12, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Rising 11th graders work to master the essential concepts and skills necessary to have a very successful year in Chemistry. What drives matter to react, what it becomes when it reacts, and how to predict this are some of the topics explored. In addition, students master methods for success with quantitative problemsolving. Past students have appreciated this opportunity to get a head start on this challenging course. Cost $150

US03 Ceramics with Ms. Eppinger July 18-22, 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. In this week-long workshop, students learn basic hand-building techniques and become acquainted with the potter’s wheel. All pieces are glazed and fired in the VMS kiln and are ready to share with friends and family at the end of the session. This class is open to all levels and abilities and is a great opportunity to become comfortable with one of the world’s oldest art forms. Cost $105 SAT/ACT Prep This specialized seminar focuses on improving test-taking strategies and academic skills. Instruction is individualized to meet each student’s unique needs and maximize his/her potential. Students take practice tests and receive progress reports. The Verbal Preparation SAT seminar runs three hours daily for two days, and the Math Preparation SAT/ACT seminar runs five days for two hours. This extended math prep session is for both the SAT and ACT.

US04 Verbal Preparation SAT/ACT August 16-18, 1:00-3:00 p.m. Focus is on vocabulary, science, critical reading, and essay writing. US05 Math Preparation SAT/ACT August 15-19, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon Focus is on fundamental and academic skills in Algebra, Math Reasoning, and Geometry.

Instructor: Robert Rosenthal, Psy.D. – ACT/SAT preparation specialist from Denver, CO. Dr. Rosenthal has a wide range of experience working with students from independent schools, as well as an understanding of various learning styles. Cost: Verbal Preparation SAT/ACT Seminar $325; Math Preparation SAT/ACT (advanced Algebra/Trigonometry) $625. Course books are included in the fee.

MIDDLE SCHOOL OFFERINGS GRADES 6-8 These courses are designed for children who will be entering 6-8th grades.

MS01 Middle School Writing Workshop with Ms. Wilson July 11-15, 9 a.m. – 12:00 noon This workshop offers students the opportunity to focus on improving their writing, reading, and study skills. The goal of the course is to prepare students to read complex text and develop more sophisticated writing styles. During this one-week intensive workshop, participants learn strategies to bolster them for further success. Cost $225

MS02 Mysteries with Mrs. Schlossinger June 27-July 1, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon Who dunnit, and why? Students, working in cooperative groups, are given a variety of mysteries to solve using deductive reasoning and logical thinking skills. These full-participation activities develop leadership skills, improve critical-thinking, and build group rapport. Cost $225 MS03 Courts and Trials with Mrs. Schlossinger June 13-17, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon Guilty or innocent? You decide! In this course, students learn about this country’s legal system through situational, role-playing activities. The course leads to a mock trial involving all participants. Cost $170 MS04 Gods and Goddesses with Mr. Dubé July 11-15, 12:30-1:30 p.m. Travel through time and space to climb Mt. Olympus. Students study Greek mythology, learn about the Olympian gods and goddesses, and explore the connections these ancient stories have with modern society through movies, literature, and other media. Cost $85

LOWER SCHOOL OFFERINGS GRADES PRE-KINDERGARTEN-FIVE These courses are designed for children who will be entering pre-K - fifth grades.

Enrichment Courses Grades Preschool – Kindergarten LS01 “DO Touch” with Ms. Baker July 11-15, 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. “DO Touch” is a hands-on experience for four to five year olds. Students use a variety of interesting materials, such as Play-doh, gel boards, sand trays, and Wikki Sticks to help strengthen their hand and arm muscles. This is an engaging and inviting way to help develop fine motor skills. Cost $85 LS02 “CONSTRUCT” with Ms. Baker July 11-15, 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. It’s building time! This class is meant to encourage the natural curiosity of young children ages four to five to develop use of higher level thinking. It incorporates manipulatives, such as marble mazes, gear toys, and Legos. Students use prediction skills, learn about cause-effect relationships, and evaluate outcomes. By creating, testing, and evaluating through concrete learning experiences, children explore scientific principles in their world. Cost $85

Enrichment Courses for Kindergarten – Grade One LS03 Manipulative Math with Ms. Baker July 25-29, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. Manipulative Math uses manipulatives to encourage problem-solving skills and an appreciation of math. The workshop offers exciting enrichment activities to kindergarten and first grade students. Cost $85 LS04 Sensory Fun with Ms. Baker July 25-29, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Dip into fun! Students explore various textures through “hands-on” activities using materials like Play Doh, Model Magic, goop, and mud. This class is for those who love to get their hands dirty! Cost $85

Enrichment Courses for Grades One – Two LS05 Science Experiments with Ms. Wilson June 27-July 1, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. Spend a week with Ms. Wilson exploring everyday and not-so-common items found around the house to see what goes fizz, pop, and maybe even BOOM! This class uses the Scientific Method to help students conduct research and experiments. A hands-on approach is used under Ms. Wilson’s guidance in order for children to make connections and discoveries. All materials and a science journal are provided. Cost $85

Enrichment Courses for Grades Two – Four LS07 Cool Chemistry with Mr. Sappenfield July 5-8, 12:30 – 3:30 p.m. Explore simple science experiments using common household ingredients with Mr. Sappenfield from the VMS science department. Incorporating the Scientific Method, this one-week class encourages young minds to make discoveries, create hypotheses, draw conclusions, and log their observations. Cost $225

Enrichment Courses for Grades Three – Six LS08 Become an Author with Ms. Wilson (Gr. 3-5) June 27-July 1, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon “Publish” your own literary work complete with illustrations, cover, and title page. This course is designed to lead each student through the writing process from generating ideas to drafting, and from proofreading to editing. Opportunities for independent, creative expression are integrated with age-appropriate instruction on writing mechanics, grammar, and style. Students have fun and take pride in sharing their work with each other, family, and friends. Cost $170 LS09 Wild Math with Ms. Wilson (Gr. 3-5) July 25-29, 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. Sharpen your math skills while you play! This course encourages students to play games and create projects that are designed to improve math skills in interactive and engaging ways. Cost $170 LS10 Read, Write, Discuss with Ms. Wilson (Gr. 3-5) July 18-22, 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. During this week, students read different texts and write in the author’s style. The combination of reading and writing focuses on enriching the child’s knowledge of language, word choice, and voice. Students also work on reading fluency and higher level comprehension skills. Authors studied include Roald Dahl, Andrew Clement, and Beverly Cleary. Cost $170 LS11/LS12 Messing with Microbes with Mr. Sappenfield (Gr. 3-6) June 28-July 1, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. (LS11); July 25-28, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon (LS12) Young scientists have the opportunity to experiment with microscopic life forms. Bacteria, yeast, and other fungi are specimens in original experiments designed, conducted, and analyzed by students. Imagination, innovation, and logical scientific thinking are developed through exciting and genuine lab experiences – this is real science! Cost $180

LS13 Beginning/Intermediate Chess with Mr. Dubé (Gr. 3-6) July 11-15, 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. This workshop is designed for children who want to learn the game of chess, as well as players who are beyond the beginning stage and now wish to learn the more intricate artistry of the game. It is intended for those who have never moved a chess piece, as well as those who want to move beyond the basics. Taught by the director of middle and upper school, students receive both group and individual attention to improve opening, mid-game, and endgame skills. While a short tournament is held during the final days of the class, emphasis is placed on personal improvement. Cost $85 LS14 “Fun”damentals of Public Speaking with Mrs. Schlossinger (Grades 4-6) June 20-24, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon Learn the fundamentals of public speaking while having fun. In this class, the students learn the correct method of writing a two to three minute speech that they present to family and friends. Along the way, they also play games that teach projection, hook the audience’s attention, and improve listening skills. Cost $170

SUMMER ART PROGRAM OFFERINGS These courses are designed for children who will be entering grades K-8.

Enrichment Courses for Grades Three – Eight July 5-8 LS20 Mask Making with Ms. Eppinger (Gr. 3-5) July 5-8, 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 noon In this class, students experiment with how to design their own masks while looking at historical examples. Each student creates a mask using multiple materials for decoration. Cost $85 MS20 Printmaking with Ms. Eppinger (Gr. 6-8) July 5-8, 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. In this week-long workshop, students explore the many methods of creating monoprints. They select from the multiple methods and materials available to create their prints. Student then have the opportunity to create several prints to take home and share with friends and family. Cost $105

Enrichment Courses for Kindergarten – Grade Five July 11-15 LS21 Art and Books with Ms. Eppinger (Gr. K-2) July 11-15, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. This course explores several different children’s books. Students use these stories to create art inspired by literature. They use materials such as paints, fibers, paper, crayons, etc. to design their art projects. Cost $85 LS22 Making Masters with Ms. Eppinger (Gr. K-2) July 11-15, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. This week-long class will focus on the art of “Master Artists.” Student use a wide variety of materials to create their own works of art inspired by artists such as Monet and Van Gogh. Projects include painting, pastels, and some sculptural work. Cost $85 -9-


LS23 Crazy Clay with Ms. Eppinger (Gr. K-2) July 11-15, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon In this class, students learn hand-building techniques using clay. They explore multiple ways to manipulate clay with their hands and various other everyday objects around them. Cost $85 LS24 Visual Storytelling with Ms. Eppinger (Gr. 3-5) July 11-15, 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. This workshop focuses on the art of puppetry. Students use multiple materials and techniques to create their own puppets. The final class is spent sharing stories by performing them with the puppets. Cost $85

Enrichment Courses for Kindergarten – Grade two July 18-22 LS25 Art and Music with Ms. Eppinger (Gr. K-2) July 18-22, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. This course explores the deep connection between art and music. Students learn about expression through body movement and dance, creating original works of art in response to different genres of music. Cost $85 LS26 Visual Storytelling/Puppetry with Ms. Eppinger (Gr. K-2) July 18-22, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. This course focuses on the art of puppetry. Students use multiple materials and techniques to create their own puppets. The final class is spent sharing stories by performing them with the puppets. Cost $85 LS27 Making Art That’s Green with Ms. Eppinger (Gr. K-2) July 18-22, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon Students explore three-dimensional design using only recycled materials. Found art and assemblage sculptures are part of modern art, and students learn how artists use everyday items in their work. The class also transforms common recyclables into imaginative and innovative works of art. Cost $85

CAMPS Mr. Garvey’s Sports Camps Grades 3-5 and 6-8 SC01/SC02 Basketball Camp: June 13-16 Mr. Garvey’s basketball camp focuses on mastering the fundamentals of the game: ball handling, dribbling, passing, shooting technique, and team drills. The camp runs 9-11 a.m. for 3-5 grade (SC01) for $75/player and 12-3 p.m. for 6-12 grade (SC02) for $100/player. Minimum participants for each camp is 10. SC03/SC04 Volleyball Camp: August 8-11 Volleyball camp focuses on mastering the fundamentals of the game: passing, setting, hitting, serving, and team drills. The camp runs 9-11 a.m. for 3-5 grades (SC03) for $75/player and 12-3 p.m. for 6-8 grades (SC04) for $100/player. Minimum participants for each camp is 10. Sweetwater Science and Math Camp Grades 3-5 and 4-7 The Sweetwater Science and Math Camp is available to children entering grades 3-5 and 4-7, and utilizes the Vail Mountain School Sweetwater property to build essential science and math skills. The three-day camps cover two diverse ecosystems found at Sweetwater—the Stream/Riparian zone and the Piñon-Juniper forest. The curriculum focuses on experiential learning, exploration, scientific data collection, and age-appropriate mathematical applications. Additional recreation is interspersed within academics. Students are picked up by a VMS teacher at the Edwards or Eagle rest areas, and transported to the Sweetwater property by 9:30 a.m. There are two morning academic sessions with an activity and snack break in between. After lunch, there is an additional academic session with a snack and activity break. Daily sessions at Sweetwater conclude at 3:30 p.m., and students are shuttled back to Edwards or Eagle for pick-up.

Cost for each three-day camp is $200 and includes transportation to and from the Edwards or Eagle rest areas. Registration is due by May 31st and is determined on a first-come, first-served basis. The maximum number for each camp is 13; the maximum student teacher ratio is 7:1; and the minimum enrollment is 8 students/session.

Strength & Conditioning Program Grades 9-12 sc09

June 20-August 11 (Mondays–Thursdays), 8:30 – 11:00 a.m. 9th-12th grade athletes receive training on energy system development, power system development, flexibility and mobility, resistance, elastic and explosive agility development, and sport specific training in soccer and/or volleyball at Vail Mountain School. Steadman Hawkins Clinic provides an athletic trainer during all scheduled conditioning sessions. Cost: $199.00 (checks made out to Vail Mountain School). Sign-up deadline is May 17, 2011. VMS SUMMER SKILLS CLINIC These services are designed for children who will be entering grades K-8.

SS01 Clinic for Academic Skill Development (K-8) Vail Mountain School is pleased to offer an on-site clinic for academic skill development. Enjoy the convenience of summer tutoring and specialized academic support for your K-8 child on our school campus. Sessions can be scheduled in a variety of ways, including 1:1 support or small group (3 children maximum) instruction in math, reading, and writing. Appointments are available between 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. daily, Monday through Friday, from June 6 – July 29, 2011. Cost: $80/hour session 1:1 $60/hour small group instruction (2-3 children) Payment is due at each scheduled visit. Checks should be made payable to Vail Mountain School. Clinic Supervisor: Sherri Steeves, M.S. CCC-SLP Sherri is the director of learning resources at Vail Mountain School. With twenty-seven years of experience as an educational specialist, Sherri is trained in Orton-Gillingham, Lindamood-Bell techniques for specialized multisensory instruction in reading, spelling, and math. Instructors: Two faculty members from Vail Mountain School are trained under the direction of Sherri Steeves to provide individualized instruction to students attending the clinic. Evaluation: Each child receives an initial evaluation to determine his/her current skill level used in developing a personalized intervention plan for academic support during the summer. Review of the student’s most recent school evaluation is conducted. In cases where children have already undergone recent evaluations, this information is included in planning instruction. Reports: At the conclusion of each student’s participation in the Clinic for Academic Skill Development, parents receive a description of the work completed and report of progress/recommendations. TUTORING ST01 Intensive Tutoring Sessions with Spanish Department Faculty Hourly appointments are available for Spanish curriculum support for new students entering Vail Mountain School or returning students seeking additional instruction. Sessions are offered mid-June to mid-August on campus under the direction of Sr. Gordon, member of the VMS Spanish department. Cost is $50 per hour. Call the receptionist at 476-3850 to schedule.
