Head Coach Bill Nicholson

Head Coach

Bill Nicholson SUNY New Paltz ‘95 l 12th Season l

he 2013-14 season will mark Bill Nicholson's 12th as head coach of the VMI swimming and diving programs. Last season was marked by an improved women's program, as led by increased numbers, the Keydets won two duals for the first time since the program's inception. Two-sport star Justina Dunne broke multiple school records to lead the squad, while Heather Magill reset her own VMI records in the diving events as well. On the men's side, the Keydets earned victories over Howard and McDaniel. Under Nicholson's headship, VMI swimming and diving has seen growth in multiple areas. The women's program was introduced in 2005-06 and appeared in its first conference championship that year, before beating Florida A&M the following season to mark the first time it had bested a foe at a conference meet. The men's team, meanwhile, has set 25 freshman and/or varsity marks in Nicholson's 11 years on Post, including Dallas Disbro breaking a nearly 30-year old 3-meter diving record during the 2011-12 season. In his time at the Institute, Nicholson has seen his Keydets claim 12 individual/team relay conference championships, including seven at the 2006 NEC Championships when the team won the first of back to back NEC titles. Also in 2006, Nicholson saw saw Brenden Geoghagen claim Most Outstanding Diver honors, after the senior claimed both the one-meter and three-meter events. His team's work in the pool, however, only tells half the story. For six consecutive semesters, his men's team received recognition as part of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America National Honor Roll. Teams must post a cumulative 2.80 GPA to qualify for the honor. In addition to his team's academic excellence, Nicholson coached Tom Petykowski '05, who was VMI's valedictorian and an AllConference diver in 2005 and was named First Team Academic All-American by ESPN The Magazine. Petykowski was one of 15 honorees nationwide that were chosen to the At-Large team that consisted of NCAA Division I playing members in gymnastics, golf, rifle, tennis, ice hockey, volleyball, fencing, lacrosse, swimming & diving, skiing and wrestling. He still stands as one of six Keydets to ever earn National First Team honors, and is the first to do so in a sport other than football or basketball. Nicholson (38) took over the VMI swimming and diving program on August 5, 2002. Previously, he spent the 2001-02 season coaching the USS Condors Swim Club in Pleasantville, N.Y., where he coached both the boys and girls programs. Nicholson spent the previous three years (1998-2001) as the men's and women's head swimming coach at Plattsburgh (N.Y.) State University. In his time at Plattsburgh, his teams broke 15 school records. The programs featured just 12 athletes when Nicholson took over, a number that grew to 35 by the time he departed. He improved the Cardinals men's team's performance at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) from a ninth place finish (16 points) in his first season to a sixth place finish (330 points) in his final season. From 1995 to 1998, Nicholson served as the assistant coach for his alma mater, SUNY New Paltz. He worked with the breast and individual medley swimmers primarily during his stint. He helped three swimmers qualify for the Division III NCAA Championships and the men's team's finished in the top four of the SUNYAC each year. As a collegiate swimmer, Nicholson qualified for the Division III NCAA Championships three times and captured eight school records. He won the SUNYAC title in the 400 medley relay in his junior year and was named the team's most valuable swimmer as a senior. In addition, Nicholson won the Coaches Award for Hardest Worker three years and won the team's Scholar-Athlete Award each of the four seasons he competed. Nicholson graduated from SUNY New Paltz in 1995. A native of Horseheads, N.Y., Nicholson swam four years at Horseheads High School and graduated in 1991. He and his wife, Emma, reside in Lexington with their daughter, Emily and son, Ben.

Assistant Coach Anna Phelps

Assistant Coach

Anna Phelps Scripps College ‘97 l 1st Season with Swimming Program l

he first women's water polo coach in VMI history, Anna Phelps arrived at the Institute on May 5, 2010 after a stint at Lincoln High School in Portland, Ore. At Lincoln, she served as head women's water polo coach and assistant men's water polo coach. Phelps became the assistant swimming and diving coach in 2013. The first women's water polo coach in VMI history, Anna Phelps arrived at the Institute on May 5, 2010 after a stint at Lincoln High School in Portland, Ore. At Lincoln, she served as head women's water polo coach and assistant men's water polo coach. Phelps, a graduate of the NCAA Women Coaches Academy, where she was given the leadership award in a peer vote, officially assumed her duties at VMI early in the summer of 2010 and used the academic term to build the program and recruit several of the top players in the country in preparation for the inaugural season of competition in the spring of 2012. While at Lincoln, Phelps turned a winless program around in just three seasons and guided her squad to a first place finish in the Metro League last year while compiling a 59-27-2 record over the three-year period. Phelps was named 2009 Metro League Coach of the Year and has developed several academic and All-America candidates at Lincoln while three of her athletes earned athletic scholarship offers. Phelps has also devoted her energies to developing and implementing a week-long off-site training site in Central Oregon for her squad. Phelps guided all fundraising, recruiting, and team administration of the Lincoln program and built the roster from seven athletes her first year to over 25 student-athletes currently. In the program’s first season, the Keydets wasted no time collecting their first win, knocking off Salem International University 22-6 in the historic moment. That win was the first of two for VMI in the program’s first year, helping VMI remain undefeated at home along with a 20-10 win on Senior Day over Salem International. So far in her young intercollegiate career, Phelps has already landed one all-conference honoree in Molly Andoe, who was named second team All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Andoe was the second leading scorer in 2012, tallying 61 markers behind Mackenzie Perkins’ 64. There was no sophomore slump for the program in 2013 as the team went on to win a program record 12 games. Not only did the team win a record number of games, but they beat a school from California for the first time in program history, Occidental (3/9). For the first time in program history, VMI hosted the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's weekend, bringing every team in the league to Lexington. The Keydets collected their first-ever MAAC win that weekend, besting St. Francis Brooklyn 10-9 at Clark King Pool. During the second season, the team set the record for most goals (275), most goals per game (8.59), while also shoring up the defense and allowing 20 fewer opponent goals in 2013. VMI's potent offense was paced by Celine Lazzaro, who put away a singleseason record 93 goals in her first season of action for VMI. A predominantly west coast sport, Phelps has melded players from both coasts on the team, combining four Californians and one Oregonian with five east coasters and one player from Ohio on the team’s first roster. In addition to her duties at VMI, Phelps also works with the Cadet National Team, part of the feeder system for the Olympic Team, gauged for 9th and 10th grade students, and prior to the 2013-14 season, became an assistant with the VMI swimming and diving program. In just three years, Phelps graduated in 1997 from Scripps College in Claremont, Calif. where she was a water polo academic and athletic All-America honoree from 1995-1997 and two-time Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 1995 and 1996. Prior to her collegiate career, Phelps was a high school All-American (1993-94) at Newberg High School in Newberg, Ore. and junior national team member from 1991 through 1993. In the fall of 2011, Phelps was inducted to the Scripps College Athletic Hall of Fame following her outstanding career with the Athenas. She became the first women’s water polo player inducted into that particular Hall of Honor. Phelps began her collegiate coaching career at Claremont (Ca.) Colleges in 1998, where she led her squad to a SCIAC second place finish while directing the program's recruiting, training and administrative efforts. Phelps also served as men's and women's water polo coach of the Iron Mountain Water Polo Club in Lake Oswego, Ore. in 1996. While building the Keydet women's water polo program, Phelps will start coaching the "Born 1996 Girl's ODP Zone Team" for the Northeast Region. The team is part of the Olympic Development Program that helps identify and train potential future talent who are then filtered into the Junior and Senior National Teams. She and her husband, assistant coach Jeff Phelps, welcomed their first child into the world, Sterling Hewitt Phelps, on April 2011. The couple resides in Lexington.

eff Phelps is entering his third season as assistant coach for the VMI water polo squad, teaming up with his wife, Anna. Prior to the 2013-14 season, he also became an assistant with the swimming and diving program. He arrives on Post boasting impressive credentials both in the pool, and outside the pool. Phelps started his water polo career playing for the nationally recognized Chehalem Water Polo Club under Coach Jim McMaster. He was selected as a member of the National Youth team and later spent time with the National Junior team. His collegiate water polo career began in 1991 at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, Calif., where his team was undefeated in league play for the two years he attended. He earned all-league selections during both seasons and was honored as Scholar Athlete of the Year twice. After transferring to Claremont McKenna College to finish his degree in economics, Phelps was part of the historic “100-0” team at CMC, where the men capped a run of undefeated league play which began in the mid-eighties, tallying over 100 consecutive league victories during that time period. While at CMC, Phelps earned SCIAC all-league honors and was voted to the WWPA all-tournament team in both the 1994 and 1995 seasons. His coaching career at Claremont McKenna College began in 1996 by assisting Mike Sutton with the CMC Men’s team and acted as Head Coach of the Junior Varsity team during the 1997 season. Phelps also was given the opportunity to assist the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s program in 1997 as well. Upon relocating to Portland, Ore., in 2002 Phelps began building the Lincoln High School water polo team with his wife and VMI head coach, Anna. Together they worked for eight years, developing the fledgling club into a respected and successful program that has spawned numerous All-America selections as well as current and future collegiate and national team candidates. In the last three years Phelps has been recognized by his peers with two Men’s Coach of the Year awards and one Women’s Coach of the Year award. Phelps was asked to start a water polo program for the Central Oregon community of Bend during the summer of 2010 which continues to thrive under the direction of Coach Doug Watt to this day. Additionally, he will continue to participate in the Olympic Development Program as a coach, and will continue to lead the Cadet Zone team from the Northeast in 2012. He and his wife and the team’s head coach, Anna, welcomed their first child into the world, Sterling Hewitt Phelps, in April of 2011r.

The

CCSA Information Four NCAA conferences announced the formation of the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA), a Division I men’s and women’s swimming and diving Conference encompassing 13 members from four regional Conferences in the MidAtlantic and Southeast regions, on July 10, 2007. The CCSA was established through the cooperative efforts of the coaches, administrators and commissioners of the Atlantic Sun Conference, the Big South Conference, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the Southern Conference. Other schools from other conferences - Incarnate Word, NJIT and UMBC - were added in 2013-14.

“The Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association creates a regional conference championship opportunity for all the swimming and diving programs in the four participating conferences,” said Atlantic Sun Commissioner Ted Gumbart, Executive Director of the CCSA upon its foundation. “The process of building this new conference has been an extremely cooperative effort among all of the coaches and administrators, and we look forward to our inaugural championship meet this coming year. The main focus in establishing the CCSA has been the student-athletes, and we are excited that the swimmers and divers in each of our leagues now have a conference home and honors for which to compete.” The CCSA has 16 total members – 14 women’s swimming and diving teams and nine men’s swimming and diving programs. The members of the CCSA in women’s swimming are Campbell (Big South), College of Charleston (SoCon), Davidson (SoCon), Florida Gulf Coast (A-Sun), Gardner-Webb (Big South), Georgia Southern (SoCon), Howard (MEAC), Liberty (Big South), North Carolina A&T (MEAC), North Florida (A-Sun), Radford (Big South), UNC Asheville (Big South), VMI (Big South) and 2013-14 addition Incarnate Word (non-D1). The nine schools that comprise the CCSA men’s swimming members are College of Charleston, Davidson, Florida A&M, Gardner-Webb, Howard, Incarnate Word, NJIT, UMBC and VMI. The CCSA hosted its inaugural Conference Championship on Feb. 21-23, 2008. “The Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association membership includes many excellent programs from the Southeast and Middle Atlantic, and will create a demanding and challenging meet for all of those involved,” said VMI swimming and diving coach Bill Nicholson upon the league’s founding. “This is a step up for our program here at VMI and we are looking forward to getting up on the blocks and racing against the higher level of competition the CCSA will present us.”
