Pisces Swimming Club

Celebrating 30 years of swimming for the disabled Plymouth Pisces Swimming Club for All Disabilities provides a weekly swimming session at Plymouth Life Centre where the Club uses the facilities, but in a private club environment. Plymouth Pisces Swimming Club is run by volunteers, all of whom are members of the Club. It hires the diving pool (which is curtained off for us) at the Life Centre for a two hour session when the pool floor is raised to a depth of 1.3 metres, which is ideal for both swimming and walking. The Club also has exclusive use of a cordoned-off area of the changing village, which is not accessible to other Life Centre users. During our sessions we have use of a poolside lift for wheelchairs, a poolside hoist, shower wheelchairs, and 45 degree stairs for easier access into the water. We also have flotation aids for use by Plymouth Pisces members. To cover the cost of the hire of the pool we charge a weekly entrance fee of £2.50 per adult, £2 per child (6-16 years old), 5-and-under – no charge. Additionally there is an annual Club membership fee of £5 per person, or a family fee of £15.00.

In 2017 Plymouth Pisces celebrates its 30th birthday. During its thirty years members have been able to learn to swim, build their confidence in water, and enjoy meeting people. Swimming has also helped with exercising and rehabilitation to improved mobility/full fitness. Our members cover the whole spectrum of disability, and come in all shapes and sizes and ages. We have a small, competitive team who have been successful at swimming galas in the South West and nationally. We are proud of the medals and trophies they have won. At our Sunday sessions (11.15 – 13.15 hrs) we give our members the opportunity to meet, to exercise, to share experiences, to help each other, and to have fun.

Us Girls Can!

Editor’s Letter

Many of you will be aware of the national TV and billboard advertising campaign promoting the This Girl Can campaign. Launched by Sport England to encourage women of all ages to become more active, the campaign has special interest in Plymouth.

That’s because one of the women featured in the campaign is Plymouth’s own Debbie Grosch-Squance, who has overcome the horror of having her lower right leg amputated, to become an inspiration for all of us. You can read all about Debbie’s courage and determination to overcome the odds and keep on running in the centre pages of this issue. We have lots of stories about the This Girl Can campaign in this issue and how it is being actively promoted in Plymouth, both by Everyone Active and Plymouth City Council. We also have coverage of another campaign which was launched in recent weeks. Called Active 10, the new initiative from Public Health England aims to encourage all of us to take up brisk walking. Just 10 minutes each day - hence the Active 10 campaign - can make a huge difference to our health and wellbeing. We have details of the Active 10 campaign in Plymouth and how the app which has been designed to support the initiative can help all of us to get involved. Elsewhere we have a preview of Britain’s Ocean City Half Marathon which takes place on April 23 and also details of charity walks and rides coming up in the city - including the Race for Life in June. My blog this issue is all about yoga and how it has made such a difference in my life. Hope you like it - and the rest of the latest issue Vicki

Everyone Active

Sport England have found that, when asked, seven million women between the ages of 14 and 40 years would like to participate in more physical activity and three million women are not currently taking part in any sport or physical activity at all.

Confidence, balance and stability, making friends and reducing social isolation, body positivity and enjoyment are all key reasons as to why people take part, and we feel that physical activity truly can have a positive effect on your life which is why we are backing the This Girl Can Campaign.

get active; by using sport ambassadors who depicted pictures of real people taking part in a range of activities. Here at Everyone Active, we recognise the difficulties and barriers some women feel which prevent them from taking part in physical activity and are on board in promoting positive female role models and activities to help overcome these barriers. We are working closely with the Plymouth City Council Sports Development Unit to ensure the message gets out that sport and physical activity is for all.

Some of the barriers identified include getting sweaty, reminiscent of school, Sport England first launched the don’t know anyone or they don’t feel fit Campaign last year, as a way to celebrate enough. active women up and down the country who were doing their thing no matter how We recognise that sport and physical well they did it, how they look or even activity is not all about winning, beating how red their face got. part at the Plymouth Life Centre are particularly aimed at women and we have identified some of these key sessions below.

• Fit-Nastics - using a range of gymnastics skills to improve your overall fitness and flexibility, our gymnastics coach takes this friendly class to help you achieve your own fitness goals and all levels are welcome. The idea is to keep fit and have fun while tumbling on the air track, bouncing over boxes, rolling on mats, and balancing on a beam. Gymnastics is great for coordination, core stability, flexibility and toning.

and challenging for all, the light hearted session concentrates on fitness rather than being able to do a somersault and is fantastic fun.

• Back to Netball – ideal for those who enjoyed the sport at school, but haven’t really played since and want to get back into it. A supportive environment of likeminded ladies who all want to have fun and rediscover Netball. If you really enjoy the session, our coach can even help find a team for you in the Plymouth Netball League.

• Buggy Fit – Meeting at the Life Centre, a female fitness instructor will lead you and your buggy on a walk/run around central park with stops for stretches and exercise. (We will do the class in the sports hall if the weather is bad). We then head back to the Café at the Life Centre for a complimentary cup of tea or coffee.

• Parent & Toddler studio cycling – another chance to bring your babies with you (in their car seat) whilst you get in shape, this is a “spinning” class to which you can bring your baby. The gentle whirring of the bikes and softer music is an ideal setting to send the little ones to sleep whilst the instructor will encourage you to work your best on the bike. Again with everyone having their baby it’s no problem if you need to step off the bike to feed or comfort your baby during the session.

• Mummycise - take part in exercise with your baby. An exercise class where everyone has a baby with them. Babies can play on a mat at your feet or you can even use their weight as resistance during the class. With everyone having their baby with them you needn’t worry if you need to step out for a minute to change, • Bounce-fit – In the morning what better feed or comfort your little one. Enjoy a way to start the day than a fun trampoline complimentary tea or coffee in our café fitness based session? Perfect for a giggle afterwards. Promoting a healthy lifestyle and improved wellbeing...

• Prenatal Aqua Fit – Does exactly as it says on the tin. A water based exercise class for those ladies who are expecting. The Swimming Pool is the ideal venue to stay active while pregnant, the water provides both resistance and support.

• Volleyball – Open to all abilities including beginners or those who just want to try something new. Volleyball is a fun and friendly sport, and our coach will get you playing whatever your ability and experience. All of these classes have a high female attendance and are very social. Some also include a free drink after, so even if you don’t have anyone to go with it is the ideal situation to make a friend and try something new together, after all everyone is in the same boat. This Girl Can showcases that you don’t need to be super fit or stereotypically sporty to enjoy physical activities. All you need is a bit of will power and enthusiasm and the rest will follow. We hope to see you soon! VivaCity | Apr/May 2017

heart disease and type 2 diabetes. How does the app measure Active 10s? Active 10s are measured using sensors in your phone. The app measures when you’ve got up to a certain speed (about 3 miles an hour) and when you keep that going for 10 minutes. We know that you might have to stop at traffic lights, or that the kids might slow you down, so we’ve allowed for this. You can slow down for up to 2 minutes of any 10 minute period and this will still count as an Active 10. How can I tell that I’m walking briskly? To be walking briskly, you should feel like you’re starting to be slightly out of breath. The easiest

of steps taken or distance walked, it’s the combination of the intensity of the exercise and how long you’re doing it for that leads to the health benefits. That’s why we’re focusing on encouraging people to go for at least one brisk 10 minute walk a day.

Foot Golf

It’s taking Plymouth and many other cities by storm. It’s a mixture of two of the world’s most popular sports - football and golf - and people of all ages and abilities can play it.

Footgolf is great for youngsters

We’re talking footgolf! The game is played in a similar way to golf, with the exception that players kick a football, rather than striking a golf ball with a club. Compared to golf, footgolf is quicker to play, is more accessible and does not require expensive equipment. It’s played on a golf course using a size 5 football. The object of the game is to get the ball into the hole using only your feet in the fewest number of shots possible. Footgolf is a very ‘addictive’ sport and the beauty of the game lies in being able to strategically combine power and precision every time you play footgolf. And, of course, it is open to everyone. Its origins are uncertain, and there is some suggestion that a version of footgolf was briefly popular in the USA in the late 20s and 30s. Swiss players have been practising a variation of the game since the late 80s and Scandinavian countries started playing the game under different names and rules in the 1990s. Footgolf courses are shorter than traditional golf courses because footballs travel less distance than golf balls. Two footgolf courses have opened in Plymouth in the last year - and both are proving hugely popular with people of all ages. There’s a nine hole course at the Plymouth Golf Centre in Haye Road Elburton which opened in in September last year. It measures just over 650 yards and combines both long and short holes. A spokesman for the course said that

footgolf appealed to young and old alike, as well as families. “We have had players ranging in age from four or five to 80 plus,” he said. “The response since we opened has been fantastic. It’s particularly popular with families and other groups.” The cost is just £5 for adults and £3.50 for under 14s and there are special rates for groups and families.

The course covers nearly 1,000 yards and takes between an hour and two hours to complete. Ian Marshall, one of three golf professionals who run the council-owned golf course, said: “Footgolf has really taken off. We have loads of families taking part, dads and lads, student groups, junior football teams and disability groups as well.”

The course is open all week from 9am to dusk and free ball hire is included. For more information call Plymouth Footgolf on 0800 6899552 or visit www. plymouthgolfcentre.co.uk and follow the links to footgolf. People can also play footgolf in the heart of the city, following the opening of a footgolf course at Central Park in April last year. There’s an 18 hole course which circles the popular pitch and putt course and the cost is just £5 for all 18 holes for under 18s and £7 for adults, which includes all equipment hire.

Disc golf - or frisbee golf as it is better known - was also introduced at Central Park last year. The nine hole course is suitable for beginners to experienced players and free introductory tips and tuition is available. The course is open from 8am to dusk. This Girl Can in Plymouth

Plymouth says This Girl Can You might have recently noticed adverts for the This Girl Can Campaign. Launched by Sport England in 2015 its aims are to get ‘women and girls, moving regardless of shape, size and ability’ across the UK and has already successfully inspired 2.8 million women across the country to be more physically active. Sport England recently stated that a total of 7.2 million women and girls are engaged in regular physical activity in the UK - an alltime high - and it is hoped that number will rise further with the campaign focusing on issues that still prevent many from making the step to a healthier lifestyle.

RockFit that have been involved with ‘This Girl Can’ noted that they have had new women join thanks to the inspiring messages of the campaign.

As Sport England and National Lottery launch the campaign for its second year in 2017, Plymouth City Council’s Sports Development Unit and Active Devon are working with a range of local sports providers to support the campaign and encourage women and girls into being active by delivering a range of free taster sessions and affordable fitness activities across the city.

One of the thirteen women featured in the national This Girl Can campaign is Plymouth local Debbie Grosch-Squance from St Judes. Debbie’s story is an inspiring one, after having her leg amputated in 2006 she was able to return to running by learning to use a prosthetic leg.

Mental Health

Anxiety is fast becoming a buzz word being heard more often than ever. With one in five Britons suffering from some form of anxiety, it’s no surprise that panic attacks and the physical symptoms that go along with them are becoming so common in this anxious age. Your heart is pounding in your chest, you can feel your stomach swirl with nausea, the tips of your fingers tingle, your breathing becomes shallow and rushed, and you can feel a thumping behind your forehead. These are all common signs and symptoms of a panic attack. However, not all panic attacks are the same, and can include feelings such as a sense of unreality, the inability to communicate, slurred speech and sensitivity to light and sounds to name a few.

handling panic attacks that can be just as beneficial, if not more so. Here are a few of my top tips for dealing with the panic. They’re simple, free and can be used anywhere.

Breathing

I know, I know, I can hear the collective groan from here, but breathing techniques work. When your body goes into panic mode, what’s really happening is a version of fight or flight. By breaking your breathing pattern, you can reset your body out of the stress response. My favourite technique is as follows:1. Breathe in through your nose for 6 seconds. 2. Hold that breath for 2 seconds. 3. Breathe out for 4 seconds.

I remember my first panic attacks coming in the form of crippling nausea in my early teens. I remember thinking how something must be wrong with me since my stomach was constantly in knots and I spent many an exhausted night sat next to a toilet bowl, willing to throw up since I thought that was the only way to make myself feel better. It wasn’t until over 10 years later that I realised all those episodes were from anxiety. I still get the nausea to this day. If I’m going to panic about something, my stomach is always the first to react. Now though, I know myself and my body far better, and I no longer fret about the butterflies in my stomach. They’re just panicking with me.

And that’s it! Controlling your breathing is a valuable tool for dealing with panic attacks, since you can be breathing unhealthily without even realising.

There is limited medication in regards to treating anxiety, with beta blockers and antidepressants being the first port of call with your GP. However, I believe these should be approached as a last resort, since there are many ways you can be active in your approach to

1. Find and describe to yourself (you can do this out loud or in your head) five things you can see right now. 2. Find and describe four things you can feel with your sense of touch. 3. Describe three sounds you can hear, or if it’s too quiet, describe three of

Grounding

A great technique for ‘coming back to reality’ from a panic attack is grounding yourself. This allows someone to bring themselves into the present, and puts the focus on the here and now, regaining mental focus and overcoming overwhelming feelings. There are many ways you can do this, but the one I prefer to use is the Five Senses approach. In the throes of a panic attack, try and bring yourself back with the following method:-

Promoting a healthy lifestyle and improved wellbeing...

your favourite sounds. 4. Describe two things you can smell around you, or describe your favourite smells 5. Describe one thing you can taste right now, or if you could, would like to taste right now. This technique brings you back to the physical world around you and can be a healthy distraction to the feelings of fear and anxiety that are gripping you.

Talking

Talking about your feelings when you’re in the eye of a panic attack storm can seem impossible, but it can be one of the best techniques to help you deal with your anxiety in the long run. By talking about your attacks, you can begin to understand the reasons behind them and start to tackle them in the long term. Anxiety held in has more power, so call someone, or message someone if you’re non-verbal, but definitely do reach out. If you don’t feel that you can talk to a friend or member of your family, Mind.org have a great helpline with a team of support ready for your call. Call 0300 123 3393 or even text them at 86463.

Lifestyle

Lastly, but by no means least, your lifestyle choices can make a huge impact on your anxiety and panic attacks. Exercising regularly can be a great way to expel any pent up energy, but also releases endorphins that will contribute to a happier, healthier headspace. Eating healthily and regularly, keeping hydrated and making sure you’re getting enough sleep all contribute positively to dealing with fear and overall making you a happier and healthier person. But remember, you are safe from harm, a panic attack can’t hurt you. The pain is temporary and the feelings will pass. I know that you are going to be okay.

Fusing Fashion and Fitness A 21-year-old Plymouth student is using her final degree project to develop a campaign and workshops to encourage teenage girls to eat healthier foods and improve their fitness. Chloe Hodgkinson, a third year BA Fashion, Media and Marketing student at Plymouth College of Art is not only passionate about health and fitness, but is also a personal trainer, nutrition coach and an active blogger on all issues relating to women, sport and fashion. After gaining her qualifications in the fitness industry and starting her degree it didn’t take long for her to decide to combine both passions – fashion and fitness. Her final major project is entitled Active Tilly and embraces the two industries. Chloe said: “The fitness industry is swamped and the female market in it growing like crazy too, but where I strongly feel we lack - research backs this up too - is our support and encouragement for young girls in secondary school. “PE wasn’t the most exciting subject for me at school; I was never taught about nutrition and food and exercise was on the bottom on my list. I was never empowered, educated or inspired. “Active Tilly is a campaign with workshops to empower, educate and inspire young girls through health and fitness. Health and fitness doesn’t have to be boring and the power of educating ourselves on food can help us achieve the most amazing things. I’ll be going throughout schools giving workshops on nutrition and health and following up with a workout all

together - primarily for young girls aged between 10 and 16 years old.” Chloe's advice for self conscious ladies and girls who want to get fit is: Make small changes every day. She added: “Don’t go in all guns blazing. My biggest advice is do one thing you didn’t do yesterday (or last week). You don’t need to start smashing the gym five days a week and only living off chicken and broccoli.

Don’t go in all guns blazing - make small changes everyday “Analyse your day and workout what you can do tomorrow to make it that little bit better and if you’re unsure on what’s good and what’s bad, grab yourself a professional to help you. One thing I’ve found over the years is we often are so self conscious about fitness and health because we are so unsure on what to expect. “We don’t always know what we should do and why we should do things and that’s scary - being with a coach, personal trainer or whoever takes away that uncertainty. We can give you not only the education but the tools, tips and confidence you may need to help you make huge life changes a little bit easier.

Promoting a healthy lifestyle and improved wellbeing...

“When it comes to being self conscious in a gym environment, the advice I was given when I started in the gym was ‘oh by the way Chloe, no one cares what you’re doing’. I looked around and actually noticed they were right, no one was staring at me and watching what I was doing which for so long I assumed they were.” Chloe said that being a personal trainer is amazing. “All I want to do is to be able to improve people’s lives through health and fitness and to say my job enables me to do that is amazing. My goals haven’t stopped as a personal trainer, I absolutely love it but I feel we can only do a certain amount to help people - I’m not sure how yet, but I want to be able to help more people even more.” Chloe, who has lived in Devon for 11 years, said that although the local fitness industry facilities and activities may not compare with London 'you can’t knock the 24 hour gyms here!' “Another mission of mine is to make the fitness and health industry down here even bigger, I love working with local brands in the industry like Crew Cat Clothing and I now run a bootcamp at Plymouth College of Art on Thursday’s 5pm-6pm which is only £2, making it affordable for students.” For more information visit www.chlohodgkinson.co.uk Youtube, Instagram, Facebook @chlohodgkinson Twitter & snapchat @chloehodgkinson Come say hey! of Ivybridge Medical Practice, part of the Beacon Medical Group

The ‘This Girl Can’ campaign is a project developed by Sport England, funded by the National lottery, and is designed to encourage women to re-engage with sporting activities and embrace the challenge of sport, no matter what their skill level or ability. This is a really interesting campaign and comes on the back of some sober statistics around the low numbers of women engaging in sporting activities, and the dropping number of young women participating in sport. We should all by now be aware of the health benefits of exercise, both physical and mental, and the important impact that keeping fit and active has on our general wellbeing. It often comes as a surprise therefore, when national statistics reveal that fewer school aged girls are engaging in sport now than ever before, and that this risks a lifelong negative relationship with sport and exercise, or that it is “not for them”.

Sport is for everyone and it is accessible to all. This campaign is designed to encourage women to pick up sport again and ignore their pre conceptions, ignore the fact they may not be elite, and simply engage at a level that suits them, with confidence that any involvement in sport and exercise is a positive thing. As the saying goes, there is no ‘perfect time’ to start anything, the important thing is just to start. Public Health England is driving towards a similar objective with their ‘Active 10’ message. This is a programme designed to encourage people to partake in just 10 minutes of exercise a day. The programme is developed along the lines of popular fitness trackers and wearable fitness devices and allows users to download an app which monitors how much activity is undertaken in a day, for how long, and demonstrates the potential impact of that exercise.

These campaigns are targeting those for whom regular exercise is not a part of their current lifestyles. Getting fit and active young people to do even more exercise is not where the biggest impact can be made on our nation’s health, these individuals need little motivation nor encouragement to engage in exercise and already know the benefits it provides. The key to improving the nation’s health is in encouraging those who feel that they are too unfit to exercise, that exercise is not for them as they hated it at school, those who are worried that people will judge them and that they do not have the skills to participate in sport. Sport and exercise should be inclusive, positive, rewarding and healthful and with these campaigns it is hoped that those who have yet to muster the courage to engage with a sport of their choice, may feel encouraged enough to do so and reap the benefits. Now ‘drop and give me ten’!

The billboard she features It’s estimated that a quarter of women say on delivers in the inimitable, attention they worry about what other people think grabbing This Girl Can style, saying: ‘Take about them when they exercise. me as I am or watch me as I go.’ This Girl Can, commissioned by Sport England and funded by National Lottery players, say that whilst they’ve inspired 2.8m women to get their kit on since the campaign launched in 2015, there’s still a lot more to do. They know: • 75 per cent of women say they would like to be more active but 26 per cent of local women say they worry about what other people think about them when they exercise

Debbie found fitness in her 30s and has been hooked ever since. She found a passion for running a couple of years before losing her leg, and pushes through discomfort to run a couple of times per week, feeling all the fitter for pounding the pavement. As being active is part of Debbie’s lifestyle, she also attends the gym once a week with her personal trainer as well as swimming once a fortnight. Not one to keep still for too long, Debbie also has fun on her trike.

• This ‘fear of judgment’ stops women being active, this can be around appearance (how they look whilst exercising), ability (whether they are good or fit enough) and priorities (how they spend their time)

Debbie said; “I know it is cliché, but I do believe that nothing is impossible. You don’t know that you can do something until you give it a try. It’s so important not to give up easily, feel confident and stay resilient.”

• One in five women in the South do less than Jennie Price added: “We’re tackling some 30 minutes moderate exercise per week new issues this time around that reflect the things women can feel judged about, Jennie Price, chief executive of Sport like being active in pregnancy or just after England said: “We’re proud that This Girl you’ve had a baby, coming back to exercise Can has inspired millions of women since after a break, and being active as you get we launched but this is just the start. St Jude’s mum Debbie Grosch-Squance, who is an early years practitioner, started exercising in her early 30s and within a few years she started running on a regular bias. She took part in her first Plymouth Half Marathon 11 years ago at the age of 40 and she continued to increase her fitness regime. Then in 2006 Debbie became critically ill with a chest infection and then contracted necrotizing fasciitis, a rare but serious bacterial infection that affects the tissue beneath the skin, and surrounding muscles and organs. She survived the life threatening condition, but unfortunately, it led to Debbie’s leg being amputated above the knee. Debbie had to learn to walk again, a process that took more than a year to complete. She now has a prosethic leg and runs and swims regularly. In recognition of the care she received at Derriford’s Intensive Care Unit Debbie ran the Plymouth 10k to raise funds for the Spring Intensive Care Charity ‘as they saved my life in 2006.’ “I have no recollection of my time in ICU but I do know that I am alive because of the treatment I received on the unit. “Although I was treated physically, my family were supported emotionally by the staff during what must have been a highly stressful and worrying time for them as my life hung in the balance. Pat, one of the nurses, was especially great at keeping my daughters’, who were just 12 and 15 at the time, spirits up during their visits. “This is the first fundraising event that I have taken part in to raise funds for the unit, but I would definitely consider doing something else in the future.” Peter Branfield, critical care team leader, said: “Speaking personally, as an ICU nurse, Debbie’s case is one that I can really recall, even 10 years later. It is really life and work affirming to meet someone who was so ill and had such a life changing event but is so positive and has recovered so well. “I would like to thank Debbie for fundraising for our unit. The money raised really will make a difference to us.”

Let’s Get Sugar Smart

city’s half marathon Leo: ‘I’m doing this to prove to everyone that when you work hard you can achieve anything’

This year’s Britain’s Ocean City Half Marathon will be the first Half Marathon for 34 year old Leo Haynes. Approaching the age of 34, Leo weighed almost 18 stone. Unhappy and unmotivated, feeling trapped in his daily routines, Leo decided enough was enough and made the decision to change his life for the better. Leo, from Plymouth, said “Someone said to me when I mentioned about wanting to run that “you’re not really built for it”. That comment set me out on a mission to prove them wrong.” As a result of becoming more active, changing his approach to food and his mental mind set, Leo has managed to successfully lose almost 6 stone in weight in just 8 months! When asked why he entered the Britain’s Ocean City Half Marathon Leo said: “Completing a half marathon started as something that was beyond the realms of possibility. But so was

running down the road to the shop, or running a 5K, or losing weight, or rediscovering myself. I am doing this to prove to everyone and most importantly to my old self that when you work hard and put your mind to something you can achieve anything.” Leo is running the Britain’s Ocean City Half Marathon on behalf of CHICKS. “I’m inspired by the work that CHICKS do for disadvantaged children, so I wanted to raise money for them” said Leo. CHICKS is a national children’s charity providing free respite breaks to disadvantaged children from all over the UK. They believe every child has the right to make positive childhood memories. A CHICKS break inspires new confidence and gives children the chance to have fun, enjoy new experiences and relax. More than anything, it gives them the chance to just be children.

open up and talk about what is happening.”

Lisa Hayman will be taking on the half marathon in a bid to raise £1,000 for the children’s playroom at Turnchapel. The money raised will upgrade the room in an effort to help the pre-bereavement support on offer for children.

The importance of pre-bereavement care with children has been highlighted recently with an increasing number of young children visiting St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth’s specialist unit as Lisa explains, “In our day to day work we deal with children who are struggling to talk about their grief. We have noticed that playing with the children encourages them to open up more and allows them to come to terms with what is happening.”

“I wanted to be able to see what the money will actually go towards,” Lisa explains, “so I decided I will put it towards toys for the playroom, so the children can sit and play in a relaxed environment, which hopefully will put them at ease and increase their willingness to

Lisa hopes that if she manages to reach her target we will be able to get some fun and exciting educational toys for the playroom which will hopefully make the children more comfortable and encourage them to open up more about any worries they may have.

Vicki’s Blog

When I first joined the gym about 18 months ago, I started yoga. After having two children, I’d had problems with my pelvis and back. My posture wasn’t great and I was still so tired. All parents will know of the sleepless nights for at least the first 5 years of their child’s lives, and mine were no different. I hadn’t been active for a few years, so I wanted to get into exercise slowly, so yoga was my new best friend.

Why

I met my new instructor at the start of the lesson and told her I was new to her class and that I’d done a bit of yoga before. It was a much different class to the others and I really felt I’d done a workout and been challenged. Fast forward 18 months and I’ve been with this instructor ever since.

VivaCity | Apr/May 2017

I’m much more bendy; Yoga improves your flexibility. You may start your first class thinking you are the most inflexible person there, but keep with it. Stretching and holding postures and twisting are super helpful for your every day life. Getting stronger; with a lot of downward dog just as one example, my shoulder strength is improving. Yoga focuses on using your own body weight.

There are around 21 different types of yoga, so my advice to you if you wanted to give yoga a try, would be to try different types of yoga and different instructors until you find the one you prefer. I started off with one instructor who was great, but then she left to have a baby. The one that replaced her wasn’t for me, so I decided to try another.

34

Yoga helps me relax and focus; I don’t have much stress in my life these days and it’s yoga that helps.

My posture is much better; yoga teaches you how to hold your body, so I think more about my posture and how I hold myself (most of the time)! Find out more

Yoga?

Yoga can help in so many other ways, including deeper sleeping, it boosts your immune system, releases tension in your limbs, increases self-esteem, eases pain and so much more. I’m up for trying new things, so when my yoga instructor asked if I wanted to join in on her three hour Saturday morning yoga workshop I said yes straight away. With two young boys and a husband at home, three hours away from them was strange. First of all, I had to get over the feeling that I’d left a limb at home (that’s what normally happens when I leave my boys, ‘something’s missing’). We homeschool our boys and have our own business, this means that most of my time is at home. Yoga helps me focus my brain and body on something much different and for just me!

Eleonora Shishmanova’s yoga workshop was at a church hall local to my house, bonus! I was a bit worried about how I’d get through 3 hours of it. I go to her classes at my local gym and she really makes you work. If I did that for three hours, I’d probably be in bed for days afterwards. She leaves us in a position like downward dog for so long, I’d think she’s forgotten about us and gone to get a coffee. But really, she’s telling us exactly how to hold the posture, how to breathe right, which muscles to use, which to loosen etc. The workshop included breath control and different breathing techniques (called Pranayama). I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this at all, but I quickly learned to embrace it and to relax into it. We tried out different holding postures using these breathing techniques. The body relaxes

into a position better when you connect with your breathing. I learnt so much more in that three hours about breathing, meditating, relaxing into poses, listening to my body and understanding that if you don’t hold your body the correct way, then you’ll never get into that posture in the first place. There are lots of yoga instructors, classes, phone apps, online classes on YouTube and workshops all over the world. While it would benefit you to do yoga from your TV/phone/tablet, you can’t really get better than a hands on instructor like Eleonora, who comes round and tells you how to make your yoga routine better and therefore more beneficial. Do give yoga a go and let me know what you think. Namaste! VivaCity | Apr/May 2017

Stunning sportive charity cycle event to hit the heights for St Luke’s

Cyclists with a sense of adventure are being urged to sign up for the south-west’s most scenic night time charity ride on Saturday June 10, run this year for the benefit of St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth. The Moonlit Cycle, organised by Independent financial advice company Tom French & Associates, offers a 50km or 100km course along South East Cornwall’s iconic coast full of stunning vistas and challenging climbs along the dramatic coastline. Anyone over the age of 16 with a bike, a set of lights and the adventurous spirit to head out into the unknown is welcome to sign up for the event, says long-time St Luke’s supporters Tom French & Associates. Setting off and finishing at Torpoint Community College, the short route caters for cyclists of all abilities and bikes, with plenty of support around the course and a midway feed station at Seaton with hot food and drink. The longer course is for the more experienced cyclist, with a tough 1664m of hills ahead of them.

Now in its fourth year, the event has gone from strength to strength, raising more than £50,000 for St Luke’s. Nicola Keen, Corporate Fundraiser for St Luke’s said, “We’re so grateful to the team at Tom French & Associates for taking on the event for us again this year. We are always working to go as far as we can with the public’s donations so having someone agree to take the strain for our benefit is absolutely amazing – what heroes!” Charlotte Malcom, Head of Marketing at Tom French & Associates added,

“We have enjoyed a long relationship with St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth and we were very pleased to be able to assist in the creation of the unique Moonlit Cycle event back in 2014. The

work undertaken by St Luke’s is very important and fundraising is crucial to this. We’re very much looking forward to running the event this year and building on its success to date.” Registration for the Moonlit Cycle 2017 is now open with tickets costing £25 for adults and £20 for 1617 year olds. Sign up before 14 February to receive the early bird rate of £20 for adults and £15 for 16-17 year olds. Entry includes complimentary water and refreshments along the way, a downloadable route map and access to a range of fundraising resources as well as a medal for all finishers. All money raised by participants will go to St Luke’s. To book online visit: www.moonlitcycle.co.uk

Sentinel

Are you putting up with an unsightly or embarrassing lump or bump on your skin? Are you unable to get it taken off under the NHS? Do you still want it removed? A new service has just opened its doors that has all the answers that you need. The treatment and removal of conditions such as moles, cysts, lipomas (fatty lumps), skin tags and warts are no longer carried out under the NHS unless they pose a significant risk to a patient’s health. A further problem is that GP practices are under huge pressure and many do not have the time, resources or skills to do the work. But people still want them removed! The Sentinel minor surgery and skincare service will see patients either though a self-referral or by referral from their GP. It’s a fee paying service based next door to Derriford hospital. The main benefits of this new service are:

• It has local GPs with specialist skills in minor surgery • It’s a minor operation so you’ll be awake throughout and pain-free • Refer yourself to the service or via your GP • ‘See and treat’ service – your consultation and the procedure is done in one 30 minute appointment • The prices for most procedures are half of what other providers charge • Just a 2 week wait for treatment • The service is clean and safe and offered from a modern, state of the art facility • Your GP is informed of the procedure The good news for the NHS is that the income made will go back into GP surgeries - so it’s a private service that passes all the benefits back to the NHS. There is a dedicated website with a short DVD clip that explains how the service works: www.sentinelhealthcare.co.uk/private-services

As a special introductory offer, readers of VivaCity can claim 10% off the price of all procedures. Just mention “VivaCity discount” when you book via the dedicated Helpline on 0333 332 2105
