£20 a month could train 60 children about their rights and equip them to tell other children too.

In Kampala, Viva has connected local churches and Christian organisations to work together to run, among many other things: Creative Learning Centres, family mentoring, Savings and Loans Associations, child protection committees, and opportunities for children to advocate for their rights at a city-wide level.

£15 a month could enable one child to be mentored, improving their confidence and self-esteem.

The Centre’s catch-up education helped Mirembe transition back into secondary school, and recently complete her final year exams. Mentors also placed Mirembe in a Creative Learning Centre, set up by CRANE and Viva, supported by UK Aid.

Mirembe’s horizons expanded through being supported by CRANE, a network made up of these many different organisations. The network offers a rich variety of expertise and opportunities for children like Mirembe, thanks to consistent training and support from Viva.

CRANE’s Savings and Loans Association enabled the family to buy a fridge to sustain and scale-up a business selling soft drinks.

Mirembe has joined many other girls spreading awareness of the issues children face in her city. As a result of being empowered to speak out on the difficulties that affect her life, she now has bigger dreams of becoming a child rights’ lawyer.

In 2018, Mirembe’s horizons began to expand. Community mentors introduced her family to CRANE – Viva’s partner network of churches and Christian organisations who combine their strengths to bring children hope for a brighter future.

As refugees from D R Congo, Mirembe’s family settled in Kampala, Uganda but found life hard. They couldn’t earn a sustainable income or afford to send Mirembe to school. She stayed home, supporting her family.

Unfold Mirembe’s story and see how her horizons have expanded

With such a strong Christian response to the needs of children at work in this city, the network has, over time, made some incredible changes to the way children are treated at a city-wide level.

CRANE is often the first point of call for reporting abuse cases and has established child-friendly spaces throughout the legal system. It also holds a seat in many government meetings, and has been at the centre of changing policies and procedures for the benefit of children across Uganda long into the future. Viva exists to enable networks around the world to have this city-wide, culture-shifting influence through connecting and equipping churches and organisations to respond effectively to children.

SAM UK

DANIELLA COSTA RICA

Daniella’s life derailed as she reached her teenage years. Family life was hard and she hung out with friends who were not good company. However, youth leaders at Daniella’s local church – a member of Viva’s partner network in her city – saw her potential when others did not. She has received training through a bakery course, offered as part of the network’s Preparation for Adult Life programme. These life skills will be crucial for Daniella in the future.

Pray that Daniella would continue to increase her confidence.

EDUARDO PARAGUAY

Eduardo became a victim of bullying from a young age and it continued into his teens. He felt unable to talk to his parents about it. Eduardo wasn’t the only one to face this at his school in Nemby. The school’s director joined Red Viva Paraguay’s violence prevention project and 2,000 students participated in bullying prevention courses. One of these was Eduardo who became a youth leader. With his friends, he is now instrumental in leading a Good Treatment Campaign to spread the message of stopping abuse to children beyond the school gates into the local community.

Pray for boldness for Eduardo as he speaks out.

Thirteen year old Sam was reserved, feeling unchallenged, and lacking in confidence. Viva’s Doorsteps network in Oxford started working with Sam through the outdoors Stick Club, and the Find Your Fire mentoring programme. They have watched him grow into a young leader. Sam’s confidence has blossomed and he makes strong leadership decisions that positively impact younger students around him. His mother appreciates the opportunities the network has given him.

Pray that Sam would continue growing as a young leader.

RUFARO ZIMBABWE Rufaro has faced stigma and abuse his whole life because of physical disability. He was invited by Viva Network Zimbabwe to become a Youth Ambassador where he and 17 other teenagers with disabilities have been trained to support peers in a number of areas, most significantly in the area of understanding sexual reproductive health. He now speaks with confidence, and his church was so impacted by the change in Rufaro that they took part in the network’s Transform Disability training. Rufaro now leads the church’s praise and worship, and his pastor says “God is using Rufaro for his glory!”

Pray that Rufaro will continue to be an inspiration for other young people.

A £60 gift could help a network train five child advocates to lead a Good Treatment Campaign in their city.

THANK YOU!

ALISHA NEPAL Alisha’s family lives in a particularly poor community in Nuwakot. With her father away, her mother struggled to pay school expenses, such as uniform and stationery, and Alisha started missing more days of school, leaving her vulnerable to trafficking. However, by attending a Child Learning Centre, set up by Viva’s partner network CarNet Nepal, Alisha has received practical support, extra tuition and learned about how to stay safe. She is regularly back in school – and thriving! Her mother receives home visits to understand how best to support Alisha.

Pray that Alisha will fulfil her great potential.
