Vista Chamber President & CEO Rachel Beld

Have you ever heard of

NetWeaving is a golden rule form of networking which focuses on helping others first, or at least treating others needs and goals as equally important as our own. The golden rule "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" implies that what comes around goes around. The goal of NetWeaving is to help others but it can also increase the chances that you will benefit in the long run. It's a win-win strategy for connecting with others. Think of the concept that if we all help others, eventually we are helped, too. The Vista Chamber of Commerce is focused on a NetWeaving approach to business connections and I have seen this approach benefit many of our Chamber members and our organization as a whole. When everyone is working to help others, we are all lifted, and no one slips through the cracks. This concept and word NetWeaving was created by Bob Littell, Chief Netweaver, but he is quick to point out that many people have been NetWeaving their whole lives without having a word to describe it. I heard the term in 2019 after joining the Vista Chamber of Commerce as CEO and become fascinated by the concept, also feeling like there was a word for what I was naturally inclined to do. I have always been someone eager to introduce two friends who might have something in common or to tell a friend about an amazing resource that can help with a problem they have. When I joined the Chamber and expanded my network of resources, I was so excited to connect my various circles with each other.

Recently, I hosted a Lunch & Learn on the topic of NetWeaving and was thrilled to see a packed room of participants eager to learn more about the concept and ways to be an effective NetWeaver. The concept of NetWeaving really resonates with people. NetWeaving builds trust which leads to developing meaningful relationships. When trust is established and a relationship forms, people feel invested and safe to make referrals or connections.

There are two main ways to function as a NetWeaver. You may be skilled in one area but the best NetWeavers eventually become adept at both methods. The first method is to be a strategic matchmaker or connector. These are folks that understand the win-win relationships between two or more people. Another way to NetWeave is to serve as a strategic resource provider. These types of netweavers help others find solutions to their needs and problems and also may help them take advantage of their ideas or opportunities.

The next time you are having a conversation with someone, start with someone you know well, take the chance to ask them questions to better understand their needs or goals – these could relate to business, personal or family. Think about who you might know or a possible helpful resource and connect your friend to this person or resource. You’ll be surprised how fulfilling this can be and how this simple act builds trust and a reciprocal experience. I encourage you to think about the concept of NetWeaving and how it could positively impact your life. I have found this way of connection to be incredibly rewarding. And, if you want to learn more, keep your eye on vistachamber.org as we plan additional workshops, meet ups, and events with NetWeaving as a core focus.

Cheers,

Rachel

When Nick and Christina Lumsden decided to open a brewery in November of 2019, their dream was far more than just to brew great beers. Since golfing was always a big part of their lives, they aspired to combine the passion for the game along with their love for craft beer and dogs into one business. Today, Dogleg Brewing Company celebrates all three in real harmony. Christina said, “It’s a perfect day when there is golf, beer, and dogs involved.” Of course, the name Dogleg represents a term in golf—a dogleg hole is one that bends resembling a dog’s hind leg. Dogleg Brewing is all about community, friendship, and bringing people together. As Christina explained, “Golf brings people together. Golf is huge and beer is huge in San Diego! Golfers tend to like to drink on the course, but don’t want to have anything too heavy.” Therefore, their beers are brewed on the lighter side with a clean, classic taste. Besides the traditional styles, Dogleg’s specialty is brewing beers that pay tribute to the UK since Scotland is the birthplace of golf. Scottish and English style ales are among the twenty beers on tap, all brewed in-house. Have you ever played golf inside a brewery? Now you can! In addition to delicious craft beers, Dogleg offers a hands-on game experience. Their golf simulator with many different courses, as well as a putting green, provides fun for all skill levels. If you are in the mood to relax and feel the California breeze, enjoy their outdoor patio. Food trucks and occasional live music complete this dog friendly, laid-back atmosphere. Furthermore, Dogleg is an excellent and affordable venue to hold employee appreciation parties, team building and other weekday lunch-time corporate events. In the spirit of supporting the love for the game, the brewery has partnered with different golf courses in the county to hold monthly tournaments. They take place on the fourth Sunday of each month. Anyone is welcome to sign up and join the Dogleg team. Christina said, “It’s nothing too competitive. It’s about having fun!” Also, on the fourth Friday of each month, prior to the tournaments, Dogleg holds a meet & mingle for people with a like-minded interest in golf. It is a fun way to bring golfers of all experience levels together to enjoy beer and meet new friends to play golf with. As North County residents, Nick and Christina are happy to be a part of Vista. Since their first days of becoming entrepreneurs, they have always valued playing a positive role in the community. Providing career opportunities and hiring more employees as they grow has been one of the joys of their journey. In the past, the company has donated beer and raffle prizes to charity golf tournaments and participated in the Vista Strawberry Festival. They enjoy collaborating with neighboring breweries to organize events that feature other local businesses and enhance the beer tasting experience for their customers. November 2022 will be a busy month for Dogleg Brewing as they celebrate their 3-year anniversary. Starting with a ribbon cutting ceremony on November 10th, the festivities will continue on Friday, November 11th and Saturday, November 12th with live music, golf simulator contests, a food truck, and of course, new beer on tap! For more information, visit their website www.doglegbrewingco.com or drop by their tasting room at 1347 Keystone Way #A in Vista.
