Enjoy approximately 1.75 miles of walking brick paths along the DuPage River in downtown. Built by the residents of Naperville to commemorate the city’s 150th birthday in 1981, the Riverwalk follows the DuPage River through Naperville and features covered bridges, gazebos, and playgrounds. The Riverwalk is one of the Midwest’s most beautifully maintained park grounds and has won state and national awards. You will find monuments with the names of Naperville’s old farm families as well as the distinctive shepherd’s-crook light poles, sculptures and flowers along the paths that have become a symbol of Naperville’s link to its historic past. Located adjacent to the Riverwalk is a former quarry called Centennial Beach, which was dedicated as the community’s swimming pool in 1931. Today, Naperville families still enjoy the large award winning six-acres of fence-enclosed area, including four-acres of grass and trees. The Beach was named one of the 150 Great Places in Illinois by the American Institute of Architects in 2007. Centennial Beach is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day and offers a NCAA/USS-approved diving complex, sand beach, sand volleyball area, playground equipment for kids and concession stands. Daily and season passes available. The Quarry is a unique facility for fishing, fun and relaxation, located next to Centennial Beach. Colorful paddleboats can be rented at the Paddleboat Quarry. Weather permitting; the Paddleboat Quarry is open all non-school days spring through fall. Paddleboats can be rented for 20-minute or 40-minute rides. An admission fee is charged. A popular sledding area, Rotary Hill is the site of many special events held on the Riverwalk. Rotary Hill is located north of Aurora Avenue (across from Naperville Central High School) and west of Eagle Street (near the Municipal Center). At the base of Rotary Hill, the Millennium Carillon celebrates the arrival of the third millennium. Rising 158 feet above the Riverwalk, the concert quality carillon is one of only a few instruments this large in the world. Seventy-two bronze bells resonate at the top of the tower with the largest weighing six tons. It is one of only four carillons world wide spanning a full six octaves. Music selections are played automatically on the bells at 11AM, 4PM and 7PM daily. During the summer, residents and visitors are invited to attend weekly hour-long recitals on Tuesday evenings at 7PM. The summer recital series brings artists from around the world to perform. During the fall, winter and spring, there are weekly 30 minute recitals on Saturdays at 12Noon and Sundays at 3PM. Tours of the tower run from May though November. It’s easy to discover the past when you visit with our costumed villagers during our summer season, April–October, as they tell the story of how Midwestern towns like Naperville changed from frontier outposts to bustling turn-of-the-century communities. Be sure to join in the fun at our special events including the memorable Civil War Days in May and the eerie All Hallows Eve: A 19th Century Halloween in October. Throughout our 12-acre grounds, there are activities for all ages, including galleries and exhibits, the History Connection interactive play area, the Conestoga wagon and fort, and 30 historic structures, including a oneroom schoolhouse, a working print shop and the elegant Martin Mitchell Mansion, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During the winter season, November–March, the galleries are open in the Pre-Emption House Visitor Center and an audio tour is included with admission.
