It doesn’t matter if you’re an avid biker or just ready for a casual ride, the trails around Medora provide a wide range of terrain and scenery. Outdoor enthusiasts with a passion for offroad cycling won’t want to miss these trails.
MAAH DAAH HEY TRAIL
This is one of the crown jewels of Medora. The Maah Daah Hey Trail stretches over 140 miles, so it’s got plenty of options. Snaking through the signature Badlands of western North Dakota, it offers diverse terrain. Here, you can cycle through rolling prairies, tackle tough climbing sections or witness breathtaking views. Make it a multiday adventure or take a leisurely ride through one small segment.
BUFFALO GAP TRAIL
Looking for a shorter, more accessible ride? The Buffalo Gap Trail offers a 35-mile loop with only moderate difficulty. It runs parallel to the Maah Daah Hey Trail, so you’ll get some of the same views with less technical terrain. Perfect for a single day of riding. And don’t forget to snap a selfie in front of the Little Missouri River. You might even spot some elk, pronghorn or a mule deer.
SOUTH UNIT SCENIC LOOP
The South Unit Scenic Loop is a great way to see Theodore Roosevelt National Park and enjoy a leisurely ride at the same time. Take the whole family on this 36-mile loop that winds through the park, offering unforgettable views of the Badlands and local wildlife, with plenty of scenic photo opportunities. Though it’s not a traditional trail, it’s a great way to dip your toes in before trying something bigger.

VISITING THEODORE ROOSEVELT NATIONAL
PARK is on many people’s bucket list. And for good reason. It offers scenic vistas of the Badlands, abundant wildlife, and it’s part of our American history of the outdoors. Here are some tips:
EARLY RISERS SEE CRITTERS
Bison, wild horses, elk and prairie dogs are just a few of the animals you might see during your visit. With a handful of exceptions, they are most active in the early mornings and late evenings. Taking a cruise on the Scenic Loop in the South Unit is a great way to spot them. And don’t forget the binoculars!
CHOOSE YOUR HIKES WISELY
With nearly 100 miles of trail across the park, there’s a lot to choose from. There are easy options like the Painted Canyon Nature Trail or more challenging routes like the Petrified Forest Loop. Do a little research beforehand to find one that fits your group’s skill level. For the best views, head up Buck Hill, the highest point in the park.
BE READY FOR SUN
Summers are a popular time to visit, and the weather is usually hot and dry. Prepare by bringing a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water. Sturdy shoes are also a good idea since the trails are rocky.
DON’T FORGET THE NORTH UNIT
Sure, the South Unit of the park is the most popular due to its accessibility. But the North Unit also has its own wonders. If you’ve got time, head up for the unique geological formations at Cannonball Concretions.
MAKE IT A CAMPOUT
Planning to stay overnight in the park? Campgrounds like Cottonwood in the South Unit or Juniper in the North Unit are peaceful places to pitch a tent. Remember to arrive early. Most campsites are first come, first served. Select campsites at Cottonwood can be reserved.

Saddle up, ladies and gents. This is the legendary tale of the rootin’-tootin’ Wild West show that has been delighting visitors to Medora, North Dakota, for nearly six decades.
Every summer, the Medora Musical kicks off the summer season in our little cowboy town by offering visitors amazing tunes and a bit of our Western flair.
The action onstage pays tribute to Theodore Roosevelt, president, naturalist, explorer and famed Rough Rider who once roamed these very Badlands. His pioneering spirit takes the spotlight. But don’t worry, there’s a whole lot more than just history in this amazing show. Expect dance numbers, dazzling lights, unforgettable performers and a live band.
Established by North Dakota businessman Harold Schafer back in 1965, the musical
quickly became a beloved area tradition. Over the decades, we’ve hosted everyone from trick riders to gunslingers on the cast. Yet the spirit of the show has always remained the same – Western charm, patriotism and, of course, a healthy dose of humor. Why, you’ll be grinning like a mule eating oats.

Legend says that Old Pete was a gold prospector who struck it rich. He buried his treasure in the canyon but died shortly after. He’s said to patrol the cliffs at night.
