AA BRIEF HISTORY

Settled in 1809, Madison achieved 19th century prominence with the arrival of the steamboat and brisk river trade. Times were lively, the community prospered, beautiful buildings and homes were constructed, and society blossomed. The arrival of the railroad and the decline of the steamboat era stemmed the boom and Madison slipped into a century of slumber. What appeared to be Madison’s misfortune was to become Madison’s legacy. Recognized as “The prettiest small town in the Midwest” by Ladies Home Journal and “Best Preserved Town in the Midwest” by the Chicago Tribune, Madison boasts the largest historic district in Indiana and the largest contiguous National Historic Landmark District in the US. There are over 133 blocks on the National Register of Historic Places and 3 National Historic Landmarks. They include the Lanier Mansion, Shrewsbury-Windle House, and the Eleutherian College.

Charles Kuralt called Madison, We hope you agree.

MADISON’S ART &

Madison has long been a tourism destination known for its natural and built beauty, boasting over 200 years of historic architecture; tree lined streetscapes, a lively commercial district, walkable neighborhoods, colorful gardens, and assortment of artistic offerings, and events. It is an inspirational place. It is the combination of the old and new that makes the Madison Arts and Cultural District unique. Beautifully preserved, historic in nature, but interestingly progressive and contemporary, it has the fresh vibe of residents who are choosing to live ‘off the grid’ in a rural yet, urban setting. The natural and built environment invites those from all over and inspires the artist to tell the story with their art, their words, and images that are unique to this lovely little city. Come see why we are ONE OF only TEN Indiana Arts & Cultural Districts in the state. From public parks, museums, galleries and studios, public art, wineries, breweries and confectionaries; businesses with art exhibits; to many more assets in our National Historic Landmark District.
