For many, Madison is a throwback to a different era. Restaurant owners still hang an open flag and sweep their front stoop every morning while kids play on the playground down the street. Store owners greet you with a smile and a Hoosier hello when you walk in. American flags flap in the summer breeze as the marching band leads the parade down Main Street. And Christmas lights twinkle as kids and kids at heart excitedly peek in storefronts.

And yet, despite all of the history in our 133 blocks of National Historic Landmark District, Madison isn’t a place where you go to just stare at the past. Guest houses and hotels feature modern renovations and amenities. Galleries and public art feature a variety of styles and mediums. Can you imagine yourself here?

A BRIEF HISTORY

Since its settlement in 1809, Madison has always had a particular charm: from the stunning architecture to the gorgeous natural scenery, our river town is imbued with rich history that leaves visitors awestruck. Madison was well recognized in the mid1800s with its convenient location along the Ohio River that made it an ideal trading destination in the era of the steamboat. Times were lively, the community prospered, beautiful buildings and homes were constructed, and society blossomed. However, after the arrival of the railroad, Madison’s booming growth was suddenly brought to a halt and the town fell into a century of slumber. What appeared to be Madison’s misfortune became its legacy: today, Madison boasts the largest historic district in Indiana and the largest contiguous National Historic Landmark District in the U.S. With over 133 blocks of breathtaking architecture on the National Register of Historic Places and 3 National Historic Landmarks, it’s clear why Madison has been recognized as a genuine face of Historic Preservation.

Our Experience Guide will help you plan your trip and explore Madison’s beautifully preserved architecture and rich history. The cultural scene today is as vibrant as it was a century ago, and we’re sure you’ll make memories that will last a lifetime. Enjoy
