MENT Ljubljana 3 - 5 Feb, Kino Šiška Centre for Urban Culture, other venues
MENT Ljubljana, a three-day music festival accompanied by its namesake conference of representatives of the European music industry, will bring together fifty promising indie rock bands and electronic music artists active in the region between the Balkans and the Baltic, and beyond. The festival’s nine stages will host more than 50 performers from more than twenty different countries. The conference accompanying the festival will attract over 200 music professionals.

Water 24 Jun 2015 - 8 May 2016, City Museum of Ljubljana Through four main themes and various timelines, the exhibition presents the importance of water. It is essential for our survival, the mobility of humans, goods, ideas and knowledge, our mythologies and beliefs, art and language. The exhibition is also discussing water cycles in nature, their meaning and ecology. The first three themes build their stories through museum artefacts among which a larger wooden boat, presented to the public for the very first time, deserves a special mention. Other artefacts also include a rich glass collection, famous artworks by Slovenian artists and a selection of the most important artefacts from the collection of the Potočnik family, originating from the riverbed of the Ljubljanica. Plečnik Collection The new permanent exhibition at the Plečnik House in Trnovo presents the most important projects of the late architect. Plečnik’s creativity comes to life through the plans, models and photographs of his creations such as the Zacherl House in Vienna, Prague Castle, the National and University Library in Ljubljana, the Ljubljana Central Market, Žale Cemetery, the Church of St. Michael at the Ljubljana Marshes and numerous other masterpieces. Several plans of Plečnik’s never realized visions are also on display. The Cathedral of Freedom, the master’s vision of the Slovenian parliament, is especially worthy of our attention. The designer and architect Saša J. Mächtig is considered to be one of the most important figures in Slovenian industrial design. His best known work is the K67 kiosk, a multi-purpose modular unit that became a familiar feature of cities and towns across Slovenia and a number of other central European cities in the second half of the 20th century. The exhibition Saša J. Mächtig: Systems, Structures, Strategies offers a retrospective overview of Mächtig’s major design achievements, which include, among others, the Žaba (Frog) litter bins, the Ekos recycling containers, wall-mounted acoustic phone booths, and a number of other street furniture elements. Open: 9:00 - 18:00 daily Bogoslav Kalaš: The Painting Machine 7 Dec 2015 - 20 Mar 2016, Museum of Modern Art The artist Bogoslav Kalaš has developed a unique painting technique named aerography or air brush painting. The exhibition The Painting Machine provides a comprehensive overview of his work to date. The paintings on display are based on Kalaš’s ‘family album photographs’ (nudes, landscapes, portraits, still lifes), which the artist has enlarged and transferred to canvas by means of his painting machine. Using this technique, he has managed to combine the conventions of traditional painting with the requirements of modernity, hyper-modernity, and contemporaneity and offered an opportunity for a reconsideration of the role of painting in the 20th century. The Celts from the Emerald Mountains
Showcasing the archaeological heritage of the ‘Celtic Highlanders’ within a broader historical and geographical context, this exhibition takes you back to the last centuries BC, on a journey through the mountainous pre-Alpine and Alpine regions of Veneto, Carnia, and Friuli in Italy, the Austrian Carinthia, and the Soča river basin and the region of Kras in Slovenia. The Celts settled at the most prominent strategic points in the area to gain control over the river valleys below. They established burial grounds and made offerings of weapons and horse equipment to natural forces and war deities. They began to coin money, traded and fought with the Romans, and developed a completely new and unique style of decorating jewellery, clothing, weapons, horse equipment, and crockery. Slovenian History Ljubljana Castle Slovenian History, Ljubljana Castle’s permanent exhibition, shows the dynamic history of Slovenia and Ljubljana. Slovenian territory, lying at the junction of natural routes between the Alps, the Adriatic Sea and the Pannonian Plain, has been the point of convergence of different peoples and cultures since prehistory. The exhibition covers the Slovenian history from the earliest traces of human presence (200,000 BC) to the landmark events following Slovenia’s independence in 1991 and presents the societies of the different periods, the state formations, the political, social and economic circumstances, migrations, transport, culture, architecture and the everyday life. The Puppet Museum’s permanent exhibition, set up by the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre, introduces
Prešeren Day, Slovenian Cultural Holiday 8 Feb The Slovenian Cultural Holiday will be marked by an official state ceremony including the presentation of Prešeren Prizes, the country’s most prestigious cultural awards, and many other cultural events held over a period of a few days before 8 February. On Prešeren Day, there will be free admission to Ljubljana’s museums and galleries, several concerts, theatre performances and film screenings, and a number of other events.

nian art over the last decade. It covers a wide range of different art forms and involves the collaboration of many art professionals and experts. Creating their works, artists react critically to the numerous contradictions of the ideological and cultural discourses around them. The new generation of Slovenian artists has replaced nostalgia with melancholy, the banality of the everyday with an elevated pathos, and realistic expectations with overblown ambitions. What the exhibition seeks to emphasise particularly, is the plurality of pedagogical practices and the hybridity of the current art production ranging from an individual item to a spatial installation, the inclusion of performativity and the relation between the exhibited, the exhibitor and the visitor, in which the latter two both participate actively. The exhibition has been designed as a hybrid spatial installation of the past, present and future, combining the traditional gallery setting with spatial installations and sites intended for live performances of creative/educational activities. The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra is one of the best ensembles performing Baroque music. Its repertoire also includes works by the masters of the Classical era, Romanticism, and the present day. The recordings made by the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, founded in 1987 and led by the violinist Petra Müllejans since 1997, set new standards and spark interesting debates time and time again due to the orchestra’s often controversial renditions (such as that of Bach’s Mass in B minor). The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra’s upcoming Ljubljana concert will be an opportunity to enjoy music by Johann S. Bach and those of his contemporaries whom he appreciated to the point that he copied their scores and wrote arrangements of their music. The Imperial Russian Ballet Company, founded in 1994 by the Bolshoi Theatre’s soloists Gediminas Taranda and Igor Moiseyev, will perform the best-known ballet of all time, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece Swan Lake. The Imperial Russian Ballet Company brings together 40 premium Russian ballet artists, whose Ljubljana performance will be part of the company’s current world tour, which began in Australia and will continue until the autumn of 2017, by which time it will have included all the continents except Africa. Swan Lake, a fairy-tale ballet about Prince Siegfried, the beautiful Princess Odette, the demonic Odille, and the evil wizard Rotbarth set to music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, seems to be best when performed by an ensemble of world-class Russian ballet dancers - and the ensemble of the Imperial Russian Ballet Company, whose members have been educated at Russia’s topthree ballet schools, unquestionably ranks as one of them.

The world famous South African director Brett Bailey set his version of Verdi’s operatic reworking of Shakespeare’s play Macbeth in an African setting. The story about the power-hungry Macbeth and his even more powerhungry wife is set in the Great Lakes region of Central Africa, the scene of ruthless fighting between different clans for control over Africa’s rich diamond mines. Excellent South African singers, who are also great actors, move Verdi’s Macbeth in the heart of black Africa in a deeply moving way. The Dragon carnival traditionally held in Ljubljana consists of a large Shrovetide carnival parade through the city's streets and a programme of entertainment held in the centrally located Kongresni trg square. The carnival parade includes, among other things, a number of typical Slovenian carnival figures rooted in pagan tradition, such as 'kurent', 'laufar', 'morostar', and several others. The tradition of celebrating Shrovetide with masks and carnival processions dates back to ancient pagan times. Slovenian carnival figures are very colourful and Slovenian Shrovetide traditions, reflecting the distinctive local features of the rural environments of the past, unique in many ways.
