I

f ever a person has served as an agent of change, it’s been James H. Meredith. He proved that one person can make a difference for the betterment of society.

While he entered the spotlight in 1962 as a result of his integration of the University of Mississippi, Meredith has continued to work throughout his adult life for the unquestioned freedom of all citizens to vote without fear of retaliation, as well as ensuring that people of all races have the freedom to attend Ole Miss or any other traditionally all-white university.

Born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, on June 25, 1933, Meredith’s enrollment at Ole Miss in 1962 was a response to the inaugural address of President John F. Kennedy. His goal was to put pressure on the Kennedy administration to enforce the civil rights of African Americans. At the time of his enrollment, Meredith had served nine years in the United States Air Force, and he had completed two years at Jackson State University, where he was an excellent student.

The act was a pivotal moment in the history of civil rights in the United States, and it didn’t come without controversy. Meredith’s enrollment resulted in a riot on campus. His life was threatened, and 31,000 federal troops were brought to the campus to take control.

Despite persistent harassment and isolation for the two semesters he spent at Ole Miss, Meredith graduated from the university on August 18, 1963, with a degree in political science. He continued his studies with a focus on political science at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria before returning to the United States to attend law school at Columbia University. He attended through a scholarship and earned a law degree in 1968.

During that time, Meredith remained politically active, organizing the “March Against Fear” in 1966. The 220-mile march from Memphis to Jackson was marred by violence on the second day, when Meredith was shot and wounded. He recovered from his wounds and rejoined the

march before it reached Mississippi’s capital city on June 26. By that time, the crowds had swelled to 15,000 marchers. More than 4,000 Black Mississippians were registered to vote along the way.

On the fortieth anniversary of his integration of Ole Miss, Meredith told a reporter from the Associated Press, “Nothing could be more insulting to me than the concept of civil rights.

It means perpetual second-class citizenship for me and my kind.”

Over the years, Meredith has written several books on society and politics, as well as his 1966 memoir, Three Years in Mississippi.

Meredith has received numerous honors in his lifetime, including having a half-mile street through the heart of downtown Jackson (formerly Griffith Street) named after him following a unanimous vote of the Jackson City Council.

He is married to Dr. Judy Alsobrooks Meredith. They have a blended family with five children and eleven grandchildren.

As a girl living in New Orleans, Margaret Walker heard the stories of her great-grandmother, Margaret Duggans Ware Brown, who lived through slavery and the country’s reconstruction after the Civil War. Walker wrote her most famous work, and her only novel, Jubilee, published in 1966.

The book, which took thirty years to write, is based on her greatgrandmother’s life. The semi-fictional story of Vyry Brown follows a mixedrace slave whose master did not acknowledge her as his daughter.

The book chronicles Vyry’s life from her birth on a plantation in Georgia to adulthood, from slavery through the Civil War and to freedom during Reconstruction.

INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM OF MUSLIM CULTURES – CELEBRATING 25 YEARS IN 2026 In December 2000, a group of Muslims in Jackson identified the need to develop a museum dedicated to educating the public about Islamic history and culture.

Today, America’s first Muslim museum, the International Museum of Muslim Cultures, invites visitors into a world of rich history, diverse traditions, and inspiring artistic expression. Amazing treasures await, from intricate calligraphy to vibrant textiles and ceramics. Each artifact tells a story of cultural innovation and diversity that spans both continents and centuries. From ancient writings to contemporary paintings, visitors are invited to embark on an enlightening journey of artistic discovery and appreciation.

“MISSISSIPPI MADE” – A YEARLONG EXHIBIT IN 2026 AT TWO MISSISSIPPI MUSEUMS The Mississippi History Museum and Mississippi Civil Rights Museum provide a two-for-one history and culture experience in Two Mississippi Museums. Exploring the heart of the state’s complex past helps forge new pathways to a bright future for the state. The two museums are interwoven narratives, tied together through an immersive historical journey through time. Throughout 2026, the “Mississippi Made” exhibit will highlight the state’s accomplishments as well as the creative and innovative qualities of its citizens.

Neel-Schaffer, the bridge represents Jackson’s commitment to accessible infrastructure. By November 2026, walkers and cyclists will have safe, elevated passage across one of the state’s busiest intersections, connecting both sides of the district.

Meanwhile, the Museum Trail continues expanding Jackson’s pedestrian infrastructure network.

The Capitol Green Connector will link downtown destinations including the Old Capitol Museum, Two Mississippi Museums, and the GM&O Depot.

THE MISSISSIPPI SPORTS HALL OF FAME & MUSEUM – CELEBRATING 30 YEARS IN 2026 The Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, dating back to 1961, has inducted over 300 athletes, and there are over 200 on the nomination list for future consideration. The Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, an idea hatched by a group of Jackson businessmen over a lunch of red beans and rice, opened to the public on July 4, 1996.

Celebrating Mississippi’s rich history of producing world-class athletes and teams, the museum is open to the public Monday through Saturday.

It’s also a popular place for field trips and special events.

JACKSON PLANETARIUM – REOPENING IN 2026 AFTER $20 MILLION FACELIFT MUSEUM TRAIL LAKELAND BRIDGE AND CAPITOL CONNECTOR – OPENING IN 2026 Four exceptional museums for visitors of all ages anchor the LeFleur Museum District near the intersection of I-55 and Lakeland Drive. The Museum Trail, a multi-use trail and greenway, connects people to these institutions, green spaces, public art, and more.

A major milestone arrives in February 2026 when construction begins on a $7 million pedestrian bridge spanning Lakeland Drive at LeFleur’s Bluff. Designed by WBA Architecture and engineered by

When the Russell C. Davis Planetarium in Jackson opened in 1979, it was one of the largest planetariums in the South. It will reopen in late spring 2026 as the McNair–Davis Planetarium, with state-of-the-art upgrades so all may enjoy the wonders of space exploration. “The new planetarium will provide a much more refined experience,” says Chris Myers, a partner with CDFL and lead architect on the project. “Visitors will enter through a new three-story atrium lobby, and on the third floor, they will be surrounded by educational and interactive exhibits.”

CHRISTINA MCFIELD Artist & Founder of The WoodGrain Studio

W

ith a million-watt smile, Christina McField loves telling her story, which includes helping others tell theirs. A multidisciplinary artist, curator, and consultant, she operates in two realms: art practitioner and cultural producer.

“Growing up, I always knew I wanted to take a creative path, but I wasn’t sure what that looked like. I didn’t grow up going to museums, but throughout my journey, my parents encouraged me, igniting a fire that led me where I am today.”

As the owner of The WoodGrain Studio, LLC, Christina has based her business model on her parents’ hair salon, where she spent much of her time while growing up. “It was more than a place to have your hair done. It was a welcoming space where people gathered and shared with each other.”

She now cultivates spaces where art and culture thrive, driving both personal and collective growth within the creative community.

Christina never attended formal art classes or summer art programs.

“I WANTED TO CREATE WITH MY HANDS. TAKING A SCULPTURE CLASS AT MSU WAS A TURNING POINT FOR ME: IT AWAKENED ALL MY SENSES AND BROUGHT ME BACK TO THE TEXTURES AND MEMORIES OF MY CHILDHOOD.”

Instead, she hung out at the hair salon where she created drawings that she sold to clients. “I learned business by observing my parents, and by being strategic with selling my art.” Her father planted a seed when he told her that she was very talented and that she should become an architect.

Christina initially majored in architecture at Mississippi State, but when she interned as a graphic designer at Mississippi Free Press, Christina realized that her art needed to be more tactile. “I wanted to create with my hands. Taking a sculpture class at MSU was a turning point for me: It awakened all my senses and brought me back to the textures and memories of my childhood.”

She earned a bachelor of fine arts in sculpture from MSU and a master’s in art administration and policy from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

She worked at the Mississippi Museum of Art, where she directed the Museum After Hours program for four years. “I wanted to let people of color know they were welcome in that space. I used my position to curate

and develop activities to celebrate Black folks and what we have accomplished.” As the Community Impact Artist in Residence at Sipp Culture from 2021–2022, she expanded her artistic practice and gained a deeper understanding of how her art and cultural work could shape and strengthen her community.

Today, she runs The WoodGrain Studio, a space for collaboration, resources, and creativity rooted in community cultivation while supporting the arts and cultural ecosystem of the state.

Giving back to the community is important for Christina. “Art has the power to shift people’s lives,” says Christina. “If we have the tools in our communities, we can do great things. As an art consultant, I advise artists on how to effectively present and market their work while helping clients bring their creative visions to life.”

eno Lee is the fourth-generation owner of the iconic Big Apple Inn, while Simms Powell is a 15-year-old aspiring chef, gardener, forager, fisher, and naturalist. They are on two ends of the culinary spectrum, yet they speak the same language. Seeing them together, you’d think they had known each other forever. Both have an appreciation for a variety of foods, and they discovered another commonality with their shared Filipino heritage.

Geno’s great-grandfather started the Big Apple Inn after arriving in Jackson from Mexico City in the 1930s, naming it after his favorite dance. There was an influx of Mexican labor to the area post slavery, but Juan “Big John” Mora wasn’t built to pick cotton. Instead, he started selling his mother’s handrolled tamales in downtown Jackson before opening his restaurant in 1939.

While Geno had no intention of getting into the restaurant business, his family ties are strong, so when his uncle, who managed the restaurant, became ill, Geno left his job as a stockbroker to join his dad, who had left his position as a school principal, to manage Big Apple Inn. Their only desire was to keep the 50-year-old restaurant going.

Fast forward, and Geno is the longtime face of Big Apple Inn. “I can’t retire,” he laughs. “I have daughters!

Plus, I love what I do too much.

My grandfather rolled tamales until he was 90.” The restaurant still serves those famous tamales, along with “smokes and ears,” slider sandwiches made with either boiled and sliced pig ears or chopped Mississippi-made sausage. Both are served with slaw and mustard sauce. As though it’s frozen in time, Big Apple Inn may be a bit worn inside, but that’s how folks like it.

The regulars believe it’s perfect.

Simms Powell (@tinychefsimms) is fascinated with the Big Apple Inn. His inquisitive nature and curiosity about food led him to

try the pig ear sandwiches. “They were a delicious and unforgettable experience,” he says.

Simms has been cooking since the age of four, and he’s never shied away from unfamiliar ingredients. As a child, he wanted to touch all the produce in the supermarket. That has never changed.

A student at Murrah High School in Jackson, Simms says he aspires to keep cooking. “I want to continue exploring new cuisines. My dream is to open a small, seasonal restaurant using locally sourced ingredients.”

For now, he is exploring catering. “I love cooking for friends and family.”

Simms has cooked alongside local chefs Hunter Evans and Damien Cavicchi, and for celebrities including Ralph Macchio and Devon Sawa.

Geno says he is excited to see young people like Simms have a passion for the culinary arts. “It brings such excitement to me to watch Simms trying and cooking new foods.”

A

n American poet and novelist, Margaret Walker began life in 1915 in Birmingham, Alabama, spent her childhood in New Orleans, and finished college at Northwestern University in Chicago. She furthered her education in Iowa, earning a master’s degree in creative writing, and in 1965, returned to earn her Ph.D. But love brought her to Jackson, Mississippi, in 1949, where she chose to live for the next 49 years. It was almost a decade after she wrote her thesis, and seven years after For My People was published in 1942.

“She married Firnist Alexander, a disabled World War II veteran, in 1943, and the couple had four children,” says Dr. Robert Luckett, a history professor at Jackson State University and the director of the Margaret Walker Center on the JSU campus. “Margaret was the breadwinner for the family, so she settled down and went to work, teaching at Jackson State.”

Walker was a professor at Jackson State from 1949 to 1979. She founded the Institute for the Study of History, Life, and Culture of Black People

(now the Margaret Walker Center) in 1968. After Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis in April that year, Margaret hosted one of the first MLK birthday celebrations in January 1969. There has been a celebration each January at Jackson State ever since.

“For sixty years, Margaret kept a diary,” says Luckett. “There are 13,000 handwritten pages, including her entries about how she moved to Jackson by herself—a radical decision in those times. She originally had a one-year contract to teach at Jackson State.” Her papers are now stored at the Center. “After Maya Angelou, Margaret Walker’s papers comprise one of the largest manuscript collections by a Black female writer.”

The Margaret Walker Center still operates as a Black history research center and archive. “We have paperbased collections, fine art, artifacts, and a large oral history repository that dates back to the early 1970s on a variety of subjects ranging from midwifery to the civil rights and Black Arts movements.”

The staff also operates the COFO Civil Rights Education Center at JSU. “Freedom Summer was organized here,” says Luckett. “It was the state headquarters of COFO, the Council of Federated Organizations, from 1963 to 1965.”

Margaret Walker’s poetry collection, For My People, received the top prize in the Yale Series of Younger Poets competition. In 2026, Walker’s only novel, Jubilee, will mark its sixtieth year in print. The story centers on a slave family during the Civil War. Walker based the story on her greatgrandmother’s journey from slavery to freedom.

She recorded three albums of her poetry on Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, and has been inducted into the Alabama Writers Hall of Fame and the Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Experience Hall of Fame. She has been honored with a historical marker on the Mississippi Writers Trail, which stands in front of Ayer Hall on the Jackson State campus, where the Margaret Walker Center is located.

DAMIEN & MARY SANDERS CAVICCHI Restaurateurs at Hal & Mal’s and Campbell’s Bakery

P

erhaps it was the chance meeting while taking a walk in their neighborhood, but it seems like Damien and Mary Sanders Cavicchi were destined to own two iconic businesses in Jackson.

The couple wanted to do a restaurant project together. “We looked at different locations, but when we ran into Malcolm White while on a walk in our neighborhood, the conversation about us buying Hal & Mal’s started,” says Mary Sanders. “I had never worked on the food operations side of a restaurant, but Hal & Mal’s seemed like a good fit for us.”

Damien, a native of New Orleans, had extensive experience in the restaurant and food service worlds. His career path led him to the independent restaurant scene in Asheville, North Carolina, when that city was coming into its own. He also dipped his toes into the corporate world as chef at the historic Biltmore Estate.

Growing up in Brandon, Mississippi, Mary Sanders had a creative streak.

where she designed theatre sets.

She took the leap from theatre set design to interior design, and that led her to design work in luxury hotels in Washington, D.C., for seven years before going into the furniture manufacturing sales arena. She returned to Jackson and designed Babalu, a restaurant formerly located in the Fondren district of Jackson. That led to more restaurant design work.

Before the deal on Hal & Mal’s was complete, another long-time business came up for sale. “We got a call from Mitchell Moore that he was selling Campbell’s Bakery,” says Damien.

“We always liked old things, and the bakery was appealing to us.” Louis and Jessie Campbell opened the bakery in 1962, and the Cavicchis bought it in August 2022. The appearance of the pink building on North State Street hasn’t changed much over the years, but the cakes, pies, pastries, and treats have been elevated to a new level.

Not much has changed with the interior of Hal & Mal’s since the Cavicchis took over the restaurant in November 2022. “We have connected with the history of Hal & Mal’s, keeping it intact and true to what it was,” says Damien. “As time passes we look forward to how we can evolve, while remaining respectful of what has always been here.”

Some of the staples have remained, although Damien has expanded the menu with new and exciting offerings that appeal to both locals as well as tourists.

There are many different spaces in Hal & Mal’s, and the Cavicchis have successfully established multiple events throughout the week, from live

music to karaoke to trivia and more.

“When the building is fully activated, it has amazing energy,” says Mary Sanders, who has also put her mark on the restaurant with the addition of The Walk-In, in what was once a brew pub with an outdoor courtyard.

The space had been used for special events, but there was no real design.

Now it has a lush tropical garden theme that is dark and intimate, like sitting in a friend’s cool living room in the middle of New Orleans. The tikiinspired menu of small plates pairs perfectly with the bar’s creatively crafted cocktails.

There’s more on the horizon. The city’s Museum Trail, a multi-use trail and greenway, is planned to run right behind Hal & Mal’s, so that area will soon be developed so that folks riding the trail can stop in for a drink or a bite.

RAPHAEL SEMMES Raphael Semmes has been on the Jackson music scene for decades. He’s a bass player, a band leader, and a jazz aficionado who keeps Jacksonians entertained with his cool stylings. You can see him every Tuesday night at Hal and Mal’s, where he heads up the weekly jazz night along with his band. “It’s important to showcase jazz music this way,” he says.

“In Mississippi, the blues are the beginning and end in music, and of course, we have a strong history in rock ’n’ roll and country, but don’t sleep on jazz. Some seminal jazz artists were born in Mississippi, including multi-Grammy winner Cassandra Wilson, who was on the cover of TIME magazine as the ‘voice of jazz.’”

Raphael also works with Downtown Jackson Partners to put music downtown. “We’ve had a lot of musicians play downtown Jackson, with more to come.”

Raphel loves to walk around Hal & Mal’s while on a break to see where folks are from. “There are plenty of locals, but it’s not unusual to see people from other parts of the country or from around the world. People have learned they can hear great music in Jackson.”

school and working as a child actor in college productions at Tougaloo. He attended Jackson State, where he majored in communications studies. “I wanted to be a newscaster.” He took a job as a DJ at WKXI after college, and he got to know a lot of the musicians around town. “I got into a band called the Age of Aquarius, and I was hooked.” Other bands followed, including Natural High.

“That was the highest profile band I was in. We had a lot of regional hits.”

Always a percussionist and vocalist, Adib plays bongos and congas with the Vamps and other local groups. “I am so proud of the music we have here in Jackson, and the musicians who represent us around the world. In Jackson, musicians are nurtured and embraced by one another. I would not want to be anywhere else.”

SHARRON KYLES ADIB SABIR The son of an educator, Adib Sabir grew up between Tougaloo College and Jackson State University.

“My father was the president of Tougaloo at one time.” Adib was involved in the arts from an early age, performing in operettas at

It’s as if she were meant to sing with them. “I didn’t get the information on auditions, and when I was singing in my husband’s church’s choir, David Curry and Jerry Smith

played for the choir’s anniversary.

“Afterwards, I told them I was sad that I missed the auditions, and they told me to show up for practice, because I could sing!” So without auditioning, Sharron became a member of the inaugural choir.

That fateful day opened up a world of experiences for the Jackson native. “I have traveled to Japan, Spain, Alaska, and the Bahamas with the choir. We have had some amazing experiences together, including singing in the historic Apollo Theatre in New York.”

Sharron loves that the founder, Frank Williams, always stressed that the reason they were singing was not for the choir, but to glorify God. “I appreciate God allowing me to be in the choir. It’s been a wonderful experience.”

“B

e the change you want to see in the world” is a quote often attributed to Mahatma Gandhi. It’s the very thing Stephen Brown is doing at Briarwood Arts Center in Jackson.

In 2017, Stephen bought his home a stone’s throw from the building which once housed an abortion clinic, and he was troubled by the steady decline the neighborhood experienced through the following years. Dilapidated office buildings, unhoused encampments, and illegal dumping began to plague what was once a thriving northeast Jackson neighborhood. The gas station next door was abandoned by its owners, resulting in frequent break-ins,

squatting, and even fires. “I saw trash throughout the parking lot and kids crawling over broken glass to get the snacks that were left behind.”

This was the scene that greeted Stephen every day as he pulled into his neighborhood.

During a morning walk in the spring of 2022, Stephen saw a For Lease sign on the building. Out of curiosity, he called the number on the sign to inquire about the property and scheduled a walk-through. The interior of the 3,500-square-foot facility was riddled with cobwebs, insulation, fallen ceiling tiles, and rust. Yet, as he meandered through the debris, his imagination began to wander, and a vision for a vibrant community space began to take shape.

Stephen adapted the cost-free model from his non-profit experience with Get2College, a statewide college planning agency. The youngest of a family of educators, Stephen drew on his childhood experiences, passion

for teaching, and background as a musician to curate programming for people in the neighborhood and surrounding areas.

An art studio was added to the space, along with a music production lab, a room dedicated to crafts, and a free library. There is a youth mentorship program, ballet and Tae Kwon Do classes, free recycling, clothing donations, and a community area called the “Ubuntu Room,” which translates to “I am because we are.”

The center hosts various activities, including spoken word poetry, quilting, standup comedy, and the popular YAHT Club (You Ain’t Heard This), where Stephen curates obscure music for people to listen to. “It’s a good thing when people can expand beyond what they know to discover something new.”

As Briarwood Arts Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, 99% of the programming is free. “Since we opened in September 2022, we’ve had over 13,300 visitors from over 100 unique ZIP codes,” says Stephen.

“We are a primarily volunteerled organization, so the people working the front desk, setting up and breaking down after events, and facilitating the workshops are teaching artists who are sacrificing their time to serve our community.”

Now the formerly dilapidated building is a place of creativity and enrichment, thanks to the vision and dedication of Stephen Brown. His next venture is to create a similar community hub in the form of a coffee and ice cream shop in South Jackson.

MUSEUM TRAIL Downtown to LeFleur Museum District | themuseumtrail.com Open daily from dawn to dusk, the Museum Trail spans three miles through Jackson as Mississippi’s premier multi-use greenway and one of the state’s most ambitious Rails to Trails projects. The trail connects the Two Mississippi Museums to the Belhaven neighborhood to LeFleur’s Bluff State Park, providing access to the Mississippi Children’s Museum and the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science. Along the route, visitors discover three connected parks, safe pedestrian infrastructure, and Mississippi’s longest mural: ”A Journey Through Jackson,” a stunning 478-foot artwork by local artist Gavin Bird.

As Jackson’s first rail trail, the Museum Trail transforms former railway corridors into vibrant public space, creating opportunities for recreation, wellness, and community connection.

The trail welcomes both visitors and locals to explore the city’s museums, parks, and cultural attractions at their own pace, whether seeking outdoor exercise, family activities, or a leisurely afternoon discovering Jackson’s stories and landmarks through connected greenspace and pathways.

The Capitol Green Connector expansion, breaking ground in 2025, will extend the trail into downtown Jackson, linking additional cultural destinations including the Old Capitol Museum, the historic GM&O Depot, and Hal & Mal’s. Future phases will continue to the Mississippi Museum of Art in the Arts District and the Margaret Walker Center at Jackson State University, ultimately connecting all of Jackson’s premier cultural institutions.

The Museum Trail represents an ongoing investment in Jackson’s pedestrian infrastructure, community health, and downtown revitalization, offering free access for walkers, runners, and cyclists of all ages and abilities.

This vital legacy continues through the center, reopened by JSU in 2011 to thoughtfully preserve and share this crucial chapter in American history.

EUDORA WELTY HOUSE & GARDEN Belhaven | eudoraweltyhouse.com Born in 1909, Eudora Welty achieved international acclaim as one of America’s greatest authors. Her beautifully preserved Jackson home, designated as a National Historic Landmark, represents one of the nation’s finest examples of a literary residence, complemented by a meticulously reconstructed garden reflecting the 1925-1945 era.

INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM OF MUSLIM CULTURES Downtown | muslimmuseum.org America’s one-of-a-kind institution dedicated to Islamic history and cultural education, highlighting Muslim contributions to global civilization and showcasing the rich diversity within Muslim communities worldwide. Visitors can explore two compelling permanent exhibitions: The Legacy of Timbuktu, revealing Africa’s profound literary heritage, and Islamic Moorish Spain: Its Legacy to Europe and the West, honoring Muslim innovations and achievements across multiple disciplines in medieval Spain. The museum is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2026.

It also hosts community events that serve as a cornerstone for neighborhood engagement and education.

Adjacent Livingston Park features an 18-hole disc golf course with concrete tees and varied terrain that accommodates both beginners and experienced players.

THE OLD CAPITOL MUSEUM Downtown | mdah.ms.gov/explore-mississippi/old-capitol-museum This stunning example of Greek Revival architecture and a National Historic Landmark served as Mississippi’s capitol from 1839 to 1903, hosting significant events including the passage of the Ordinance of Secession.
