The lake is popular with anglers searching for giant Kamloops, a freshwater species of lake trout that can weigh in at 10 pounds. Early August is the perfect time to visit. You can take in performances at the Festival at Sandpoint, an eclectic musical event, or taste Idaho’s signature fruit, the huckleberry, at the annual Huckleberry Festival. Stroll down to the farmer’s market or art walks that occur all summer long.

High in the Selkirk Range, Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort offers 92 named runs on 2,900 skiable, powder-plowable acres in winter. Back in town, Sandpoint Winter Carnival in mid-February is yet another antidote for cabin fever. The event features indoor and outdoor activities ranging from energetic skiing, snowboarding, skijoring and snowshoeing to more relaxing bonfires, movies and culinary events.

Silverwood

A short distance north of Coeur d’Alene is the northwest’s largest playground for children of all ages, Silverwood Theme Park. Thrill to more than 65 rides, shows and attractions, then splash about at Boulder Beach Water Park. In October, Silverwood turns into Scarywood, open weekends for chilling Halloween fun. During the winter, snow blankets the area in prime powder for winter recreation. There are three resorts within a reasonable drive—Schweitzer Mountain, Silver Mountain and Lookout Pass—for your ski and snowboard pleasure.

A river runs through Post Falls and makes a mighty roar. Just four miles east of the Washington-Idaho border is the charming city of Post Falls, set on the Spokane River. In 1871, Frederick Post secured a treaty with the local Coeur d’Alene Tribe and built a sawmill here. The purchase was memorialized with a pictograph carved into a granite cliff in Treaty Rock Park. Post Falls is the departure point for river cruises from Templin’s Resort Marina. Nearby, the popular Q’Emlin Riverside Park invites you to swim, picnic or launch your boat. Post Falls is just a short drive from Coeur d’Alene and offers travelers comfortable lodging, restaurants and services along the Spokane River.
