the end of the road
Homer has long been described as “Where the Land Ends and the Sea Begins,” “The Cosmic Hamlet by the Sea,” and “The End of the Road.” Connected to the road system in the 1950s, it is the farthest you can drive westerly on a continuous roadway in North America. Homer is situated in one of the most uniquely beautiful places on earth, offering spectacular views of Kachemak Bay, the Kenai Mountains, and several volcanic peaks across Cook Inlet (p. 30). Glaciers such as Grewingk, Portlock, Doroshin, and Wosnesenski (often referred to as 'The Woz') are visible or accessible from Homer.
Long before the establishment of Homer, this area served as a sacred ground for Indigenous peoples, who meticulously cared for its stunning natural landscapes and resources, acting as stewards of the land. The bay, known for its breathtaking beauty, has been a cherished homeland for various Indigenous groups, such as the Dena’ina, Sugpiaq, Yup’ik, Aleut, Alutiiq, and Kachemak peoples, spanning countless generations. This unique location, where the rugged wilderness meets the sea, has made Homer a geographical landmark and a crossroads of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and adventure.
As you plan your trip to Homer, consider this legacy of environmental stewardship. We ask that you treat the land in a way that ensures future generations can enjoy it.

KACHEMAK BAY STATE PARK & STATE WILDERNESS PARK
Kachemak Bay State Park, Alaska’s first state park and the only designated wilderness park, encompasses nearly 400,000 acres of mountains, glaciers, forests, beaches, and rivers. Locals and visitors love backpacking, berry picking, beachcombing, bird watching, camping, canoeing, glacier traversing, hiking, kayaking, paddle boarding, photography, packrafting, rock climbing, skiing, snowshoeing, and wildlife viewing all in this phenomenal wonderland.
GULL ISLAND
A favorite must-see spot on your way to explore across the bay. This is the largest bird rookery in the Bay and the nesting grounds for 8 species of seabirds, located about 4 miles from the Homer Spit. Some of the more prolific species here are black-legged kittiwakes, pelagic cormorants, and puffins. A remote-controlled camera is operated from the public galleries of the Pratt Museum in Homer. Visit the museum to control the webcam and explore Gull Island or take a tour of the island.
HALIBUT COVE LAGOON
The quaint lagoon is home to many residents and harbor porpoises, seals, and sea otters. This is a tidal lagoon, and the tides are extreme. Although the waters are placid, the channel feeding the lagoon can be very turbulent when the tide rages in and out. The ranger station at the head of the lagoon offers a public dock and public-use cabins. People love to take the Danny J Ferry over and walk the boardwalks, stop to pet horses, visit art galleries, and end the evening with fine dining.
TUTKA BAY
Tutka Bay is the longest bay, surrounded by high, steep mountains, giving a real sense of remote Alaska. Trails lead to the top of Grace Ridge and up to Tutka Lake. This scenic bay is a great place for more experienced kayakers to explore. You can also rent one of three yurts, with one at the trailhead to Grace Ridge, to create a perfect itinerary.
CHINA POOT BAY
This cornucopia of sea life offers one of the most dramatic changes in scenery caused by Kachemak Bay's 28.5’ tidal range. Tide pools are filled with sea stars, mussels, urchins, and sea anemones. A trailhead at the head of the bay leads you to the Coalition Trail and Halibut Cove Lagoon Trail.
BEAR COVE
This secluded cove at the head of Kachemak Bay is accessible only by boat. It offers a unique opportunity for visitors to experience the tranquility of Alaska's untouched wilderness and observe marine life, including sea otters, seals, and sometimes whales. Renowned for its excellent fishing opportunities, Bear Cove is a paradise for anglers seeking halibut and salmon amidst breathtaking landscapes. Yes, it’s common to see bears around Bear Cove, primarily black bears.

Eldred Passage has magnificent views and wildlife—access to Sadie Knob, Grace Ridge, and Tutka Lake Trails. It is also a scenic waterway renowned for its serene beauty and abundant wildlife, including eagles, black oystercatchers, loons, sea otters, and occasionally whales. This tranquil passage offers kayakers and boaters an unparalleled experience of Alaska's pristine wilderness, with stunning views of rugged coastlines and forested hills.
PETERSON BAY
It is an ecological wonder known for its rich marine life and diverse bird species, including bald eagles, puffins, and several oyster farms. This serene bay is a haven for nature enthusiasts and kayakers, offering peaceful exploration through its clear waters and an intricate system of tide pools and estuaries. Additionally, it's a prime location for educational trips, as it houses the Peterson Bay Field Station of the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies, which provides visitors with insights into the area's local ecology and conservation efforts.
SADIE COVE
Wildlife is the draw in this fjord-like bay with steep mountainsides featuring pristine beaches, and lush forests with mountain goats, seals, and numerous bird species. Sadie Peak is the highest point. Sadie Cove is very deep with little tidal current. Check your weather. The “Sadie Eighties” occasionally blow in the summer, creating severe wind gusts.
WHERE TO STAY
If you plan to visit Kachemak Bay State Park and wonder where to stay, you have several options. Twenty-one campsites are available throughout the park, which do not require any reservation. Additionally, there are six public-use cabins that you can reserve up to 7 months in advance. If you prefer a more glamping experience, rent one of the eight private yurts available at Alaskan Yurt Rentals. However, it's recommended to book early to secure your preferred option. There are also various lodging and all-inclusive options that you can explore. For more information, visit HomerAlaska.org or check p. 83.

The 3.2-mile trail to the glacier is as accessible as it is scenic, making it a perfect adventure for hikers of all levels. The hike to the glacier can take 1.5 to 2 hours, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the view, have a picnic, or just relax by the lake.
If you journey across the bay via water taxi, you will disembark at Glacier Spit, beginning with a gentle uphill from the beach. The trail meanders through dense Sitka spruce and cottonwood forests, leading to Grewingk Glacier Lake, dramatically framed by snowcapped mountains and Grewingk Glacier Lake dotted with blue icebergs. Some adventurers take a dip, others packraft it, and many wait to skate on it during the winter!

Let's talk volcanoes because they're not just pointy hills around Homer –they're living, breathing giants. The easiest way to identify the volcanoes is DAIRS . Starting from the South is Douglas, then Augustine, Iliamna, Redoubt, and Spurr.
The Cook Inlet, “Tikahtnu” in the Tanaina native language or Cungaacig in the native Sugpiaq language, formed about 65 million years ago. Along with the Kenai Peninsula and surrounding mountains, Cook Inlet is a result of geological uplift from the Pacific Plate's subduction. This region, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, is known for active volcanoes like Augustine and Mount Redoubt and is prone to significant earthquakes, like the 1964 “Good Friday” earthquake that put much of the Homer Spit underwater. The Cook Inlet has one of the world's largest tidal ranges, leading to challenging navigation due to strong currents and tides. The Alaska Current moderates the Inlet's climate, making it milder than other parts of Alaska.

30 VOLCANOES AROUND HERE
MT. AUGUSTINE
MOUNT DOUGLAS
When there is clear visibility, you can spot the silhouette of Mount Douglas, a 7,005-foot sentinel guarding the western horizon. The summit gets to be 72° with a highly acidic crater lake about 525 feet wide. No eruptions have been recorded, but it has a fresh lava flow with no ice buildup, meaning it is a sleeping giant. Look for it on the left on your way to Katmai National Park for bear viewing.
MOUNT AUGUSTINE
Photographed on the left, this volcanic island is easy to spot 70 miles from Homer at 4,025 feet high. It stands alone to the right of the Kenai Mountain Range, all the mountains directly across the Homer Spit. After 20 years of no eruptions, there were 13 explosions in 2006, covering Homer in ash. There is now a new summit lava dome and two short, blocky lava flows.
MOUNT ILIAMNA
Next in view is Mount Iliamna, which is 10,013 feet tall, with four peaks draped in snowy peaks and glaciers. There have been no recent eruptions but a few earthquakes.
MOUNT REDOUBT
Towering 11,000 feet, Redoubt recently erupted in 2009 with 19 separate explosions. Plume heights reached heights between 17,000 and 62,000 feet. The ash fall closed the airport in Anchorage as it blanketed Anchorage and Homer!
MOUNT SPURR
Not visible from Homer, Mount Spurr, situated north of Homer, Alaska, is an 11,070-foot volcano, the highest in the Aleutian Arc. Eighty miles west of Anchorage, Alaska, is most visibly seen from areas within or near Anchorage, including parts of the Kenai Peninsula. It can be observed on clear days from higher elevations in Anchorage and surrounding regions.

4. DIAMOND CREEK TRAIL | 4.2 MI (MODERATE)
This 4.2-mile out-and-back trail takes you through tall grass meadows and alder forests before dropping to the Cook Inlet beach. The trail’s upper half primarily switches backs with a crushed-rock surface, with some areas of clay that can be slick if wet. The trail’s last section is quite steep. A walking stick is a good idea. Remember to check the tides if you adventure down the coast; rising tides can trap you against the bluffs. Check trail conditions.
5. EVELINE STATE RECREATION / ALPINE MEADOW TRAIL | 1.4 MI (EASY)
Explore this 1.4-mile loop trail out East End Road in Homer. The trail is surrounded by beautiful grasses, wildflowers, and a partial forest. You also can enjoy a view of two glaciers. The drive out East End is stunning and gives a different perspective of the Homer area.
6. HOMER SPIT TRAIL | 4.3 MI (EASY)

Start at Glacier Spit and take the Grewingk Tram Spur Trail to the tram. The tram may require 2 people to operate, max wt. 500 lbs. Turn left and follow a trail past blue pools of water to Humpy Creek. Practice bear awareness as black bears frequent the mouth of Humpy Creek when the salmon are spawning (July and August).
11. GLACIER LAKE TRAIL | 3.2 MI (EASY)
By far the most popular day hike in Kachemak Bay State Park, this easy trail takes you to Grewingk Glacier Lake—very little elevation gain. Walk in the path of the receding glacier through a boreal forest out to the glacial moraine. Follow Cairns to a lake filled with ancient ice. Enjoy spectacular views. You can see and hear the glacier calving. Hikers most often return via the Saddle Trail.
12. SADDLE TRAIL | 1 MI (MODERATE)
This popular trail, which begins at Halibut Cove and connects with Glacier Lake Trail, offers multiple switchbacks up and over a forested ridge. Many hikers take the Grewingk Glacier Lake Trail, enjoy the lake, and take the Saddle Trail to Halibut Cove for a water taxi pickup at the end of their day.
13. ALPINE RIDGE TRAIL | 2.5 MI (MODERATE TO DIFFICULT)
For awe-inspiring views, head south at the top of Saddle Trail. This popular, quick route to alpine areas follows a ridge through spruce and alder to alpine tundra. Locals call this the “stairway to heaven.” Once you climb above the tree line and are in the alpine, the trail disappears.
14. COALITION TRAIL | 5.5 MI (MODERATE)
Coalition Trail connects China Poot Bay with Halibut Cove Lagoon and China Poot Lake Trail. The trail climbs over a low ridge, opening to scenic views of China Poot Bay. Next, hikers descend to China Poot Bay, where they can get picked up by water taxi or continue south.
15. POOT PEAK TRAIL | 4.6 MI (VERY DIFFICULT)
The steep, slick, unmaintained route climbs rapidly through the spruce first, alders, and loose scree slopes. The Summit Spur (1.1 miles from trailhead) leads to the peak, climbing very steeply for the next 0.2 miles to a rocky bench, or “Lower Summit” (2100’). This is a good stop for those unprepared to summit. CAUTION: Only climbers with rock climbing training should continue beyond this point.
16. WOSNESENSKI RIVER TRAIL | 11.3 MI (SOMEWHAT DIFFICULT)
Beginning from the Poot Peak Trail, this route winds through forests, meadows, and bogs, up and over a low ridge, and into the Wosnesenski River Valley. The Wosnesenski River is a glacial river, braided with gravel flats on either side with sweeping vistas of mountains and glaciers and a spectacular 600’ waterfall.
17. SADIE KNOB TRAIL | 6.3 MI (MODERATE, DIFFICULT IN PLACES)
This trail accesses an alpine ridge between Sadie Cove and Kachemak Bay. The north and south routes connect the north and south ends of Eldred Passage, both joining the ridge route. The trail follows the ridgeline to Sadie Knob where hikers can enjoy superb and expansive 360° views of Kachemak Bay. Watch for mountain goats, black bears, and eagles.
18. GRACE RIDGE TRAIL | 8.2 MI (MODERATE TO DIFFICULT)
This trail begins at Kayak Beach Campsite and follows an old road now dense with alders. Next, hikers climb through old-growth Sitka spruce into stunning alpine. This hike offers dramatic views of Eldred Passage, Sadie Peak, Cook Inlet volcanoes, and more. Depending on the time of year, enjoy fresh blueberries along the way. Watch for mountain goats, black bears, and bald eagles.

KATMAI NATIONAL PARK: A LAND OF GIANTS & WONDERS
Deep in the heart of Alaska lies Katmai National Park, a haven for the world's highest concentration of brown bears. These colossal creatures, also known as Alaska grizzlies, play a vital role in Katmai's ecosystem. Witnessing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat is an experience unlike any other, and Homer, Alaska, is the main gateway to this unforgettable adventure. Homer is the closest major town to Katmai National Park in Alaska. A scenic 45-minute flight is the opening act for your bear-viewing adventure.
DID YOU KNOW:
VOLCANIC BIRTH: Born from volcanic eruptions millions of years ago, Katmai has a landscape shaped by volcanoes, including the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, formed by a massive eruption in 1912.
SALMON SYMPHONY: Hundreds of thousands of salmon return to the rivers of Katmai National Park each summer. This triggers a feeding frenzy for the resident bears and is a highlight for visitors to see these bears catching, eating, and even "dancing" with the fish.
FAT BEAR WEEK: The annual Fat Bear Week in October focuses on the resilience, adaptability, and strength of Katmai’s brown bears. Bears are matched against each other in a tournament-style competition, and online visitors can vote on which bear has packed on the most pounds in preparation for winter hibernation.
A CULTURAL TAPESTRY: For thousands of years, Alaska Natives have called Katmai home. Explore archaeological sites, learn about their rich traditions, and appreciate these communities' deep connection with the land.

DEEP SEA FISHING
If fishing in Alaska is on your bucket list, Homer is the place for you! The pristine waters of Kachemak Bay and Cook Inlet are home to all five species of salmon, halibut, lingcod, rockfish, Pacific cod, kelp greenling, and pollock. Book a half-day, a full-day, or overnight adventure with one of our many professional fishing charters. All you need is a fishing license, layered clothing, and lunch (no bananas!), and you’re set for the trip of a lifetime.
THE FISHING HOLE
(handicapped accessible platform & ramp available)
The Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon (aka The Fishing Hole) is located on the east side of the Homer Spit. What began as an artificial lagoon for barge refitting became a popular fishing spot for locals and visitors alike. The lagoon is stocked with silver salmon (coho) and king salmon (Chinook) for sport fishing. Mid-May to early July anglers enjoy fishing for kings. Silvers have an early run from mid-July to early August, followed by a late run from early August to mid-September. The Lagoon has fish-cleaning tables, restroom facilities, and a small picnic area.
END OF THE HOMER SPIT
At the tip of the Homer Spit, you’ll find all ages fishing for walleye pollock, Pacific cod, starry flounders, Irish lords, sculpins, Dolly Varden trout, silver salmon, king salmon, and even halibut. Surfcasting setups are very popular in this fishing area.
FRESHWATER FISHING
In addition to our saltwater fishing, Homer has incredible freshwater fishing opportunities, including the road-accessible Anchor River, Stariski Creek, Deep Creek, and Ninilchik River. Here, you’ll find king salmon, coho, pink salmon, steelhead trout, Dolly Varden char, and a small run of sockeye and chum.

TYPES OF FISH
HALIBUT
Homer is known as the “Halibut Fishing Capital of the World,” and rightfully so. Anglers from around the globe travel to Homer for world-class halibut fishing in Kachemak Bay and Cook Inlet. If you’re hoping to land some Pacific halibut, the season is February 1 through December 31 annually, and the peak halibut fishing season is between May and early September. Mid-May through Labor Day, you can participate in the Halibut Derby and earn cash prizes for your catch. See more on p. 59.
SALMON
Kachemak Bay is home to all five species of salmon, making it a unique fishing destination. The king (Chinook) salmon, known for its size and strength, is caught year-round in these waters. Coho, sockeye, and pink salmon also thrive here, with their peak catching season running from July through September. Kachemak Bay's diverse ecosystem makes it one of the few places in the world where anglers can potentially catch all five salmon species in a single trip!
LINGCOD & ROCKFISH
The fishing season for lingcod in the area begins on May 15 and extends until the end of November. A size restriction allows the catch of only lingcod that measures 35 inches or longer. When it comes to rockfish, black bass is the most commonly caught variety, though yelloweye and tiger rockfish are also frequently reeled in by anglers.

Fly fishermen do this while swinging streamers or drifting egg patterns. Try spinners, yarn, or plugs to fish with tackle. You can find tons of fishing gear and local tips at Ulmer’s Drug & Hardware.

SALTY DAWG SALOON: HOMER’S HISTORIC GEM
In the heart of Homer, Alaska, the Salty Dawg Saloon stands as more than a saloon; it's a testament to the town's rich history. Built in 1897 as one of the first cabins, this iconic structure, stewarded by the Warren family since the ‘80s, evolved from a humble post office to one of Homer's iconic landmark sites.
The Salty Dawg Saloon's history reflects a tapestry of lives and eras. Initially serving as a railroad station, grocery store, coal mining office, and schoolhouse, it became a post office and store in 1909. It once housed a large family, echoing the close-knit nature of early Alaskan life.
A significant transformation occurred in the 1940s when Chuck Abbott acquired it for Standard Oil Company. The Saloon's current identity was cemented in 1957, aligning with Alaska's approach to statehood. After the 1964 "Good Friday" earthquake, Earl Hillstrand relocated and revamped it on the Spit, adding its distinctive lighthouse tower.
Today, the Salty Dawg Saloon is a cultural hub and melting pot, famous for its eclectic vibe. Fishers, business people, and tourists mix here, sharing stories and the local scene.
Inside, the Saloon is a living museum of maritime history. Its walls and ceilings are adorned with paper money, maritime memorabilia, and relics, each telling personal stories and adding to the Saloon's character.
More than just a stop for a drink, the Salty Dawg Saloon embodies the spirit of Homer, Alaska. It's a place where history is remembered and continuously made; every visit offers a new experience, and every patron can leave a piece of themselves behind. For many, a journey to Homer is incomplete without experiencing the Dawg's unique charm – a true Alaskan treasure where the past and present merge to celebrate community and continuity. drink here

The Homer Council on the Arts is a hub for Kachemak Bay's arts, offering artist and concert promotion, arts education, advocacy, and creative and performance opportunities. They are committed to making the arts accessible to everyone.
First Friday art show openings are a highlight in Homer. On the first Friday of each month, visitors can stroll through various galleries, meet artists, explore new exhibitions, and enjoy refreshments.
From May 18 through 21, the Kachemak Bay Writers' Conference, known for its national acclaim and nearly two decades of history, will feature distinguished keynote speakers, workshops, readings, and panels. Covering fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and the business of writing, this event promises enriching experiences for attendees.

ALASKA WORLD ARTS FESTIVAL

In the summer, you’ll find many live music performances in the area, including the 3-day Salmonfest at the Kenai Peninsula Fairground in Ninilchik, around the bay at the Seldovia Summer Solstice Festival, and in Halibut Cove. Sacred Acre is a new three-day, fully immersive experience with some of the world’s top electronic music artists and stunning laser and digital art stage displays.
BURNING BASKET
Each September, the Homer community observes a 20-year collaborative tradition of weaving a large basket of natural materials to burn on the beach at Mariner Park. Participants are invited to write and place personal messages on and within the basket. At sundown, the basket is lit and burned to ash in an act of remembrance and unburdening. Burning Basket is a special, reflective moment for Homer.

Homer offers a unique blend of qualities rarely found in one location: abundant outdoor activities, a thriving arts and culture scene, and a strong sense of community – all making it an ideal place to raise a family. As an arts and fishing hub, Homer is steeped in maritime and homesteading traditions, with a community deeply committed to environmental stewardship and independence.
Established in March 1964 and named after Homer Pennock, an entrepreneur who arrived in 1896, the city today is a magnet for those seeking authentic experiences rather than the false gold promises of its namesake. Homer's genuine allure lies in its natural beauty and vibrant community life.
At its core, Homer is defined by its caring and engaged community. Residents actively contribute their time and talents, participating in civic, non-profit, and grassroots initiatives. These collective efforts not only support those in need but also foster solutions for communal concerns and drive civic projects, enhancing the overall quality of life in Homer. Maybe one day you'll be a “Homerite” too!
