CRESCENT CITY N

amed for the crescent-shaped stretch of sandy beach south of the city, Crescent City is home to the Redwood National and State Parks. The amazing giants, the coast redwoods, are the tallest trees on earth and border Crescent City. With the Pacific Ocean to the west, the giant redwoods to the south and east and the lovely Smith River valley to the north, Crescent City is an outdoor paradise. As a coastal town, Crescent City attractions are primarily related to the ocean. Near the harbor sits the first of two lighthouses. Battery Point Lighthouse celebrates its 165th anniversary in 2021. It is operated by the Del Norte County Historical Society as a museum and is accessible by foot during low tide. Battery Point Lighthouse continues to be a navigational aid to mariners. The Saint George Reef Lighthouse sits six miles offshore up the coast. The Saint George Reef Lighthouse Preservation Society offers helicopter flights to the lighthouse for tours seasonally, weather permitting. The city also has a large world-class harbor filled with commercial fishing vessels. Visitors can walk the harbor, purchase fresh tuna and Dungeness crab off the local boats, experience the cuisine of several restaurants with ocean views, browse through art galleries and enjoy the whimsical behavior of local harbor seals and sea lions. Fishing enthusiasts can reserve charter boats for an ocean fishing experience, whale watching, or even get married on the open sea. Elk Valley Rancheria tribal members call Crescent City their home. Named after the beautiful Roosevelt elk herds that inhabit

their lands, the Elk Valley Rancheria Is located just a quarter-mile outside the park boundaries of the Redwoods National and State Park west entrance. Even closer to the park boundary is their Elk Valley Casino with its Full House Restaurant and Bar. Crescent City is home to the North Coast Marine Mammal Center, which takes care of sick, orphaned and injured marine mammals so they can be released back into the wild. You can often view these beautiful creatures from outside their fencing and visit the gift shop. Located at 424 Howe Drive. • • • • • • • •

KLAMATH T

he beautiful town of Klamath is the first community you come to in Del Norte County as you travel north on Highway 101. Nestled in the giant redwoods, Klamath sits on the mouth of the mighty Klamath River and is located within the Yurok Reservation. Since time immemorial, the Yurok Tribe has called the banks of the Klamath river home. The Yuroks thrived off these lands, the Klamath River being their lifeline. Culturally, Yuroks are known as strong medicine people, great fishermen, basket weavers, canoe carvers, storytellers and singers. Early settlements on the south end of the county depended upon the river waters for transportation and commerce. Today, the town is known for its diverse recreational activities. It is in the center of the Redwood National and State Parks and provides services and lodging in cabins, motels, bed-and-breakfast inns and hundreds of campsites in an area 7 miles long.

Two new attractions to the area are the Yurok Redwood Canoe Tours on the Klamath River and the Redwood Canopy Trail at Trees of Mystery. Combine these with the Klamath Jet Boats, Tour Thru Tree and the amazing Klamath Overlook, and Klamath becomes one of the most popular areas of Del Norte County. • • • • • • •

SMITH RIVER T

he beautiful Smith River valley stretches from north of Crescent City to the Oregon border. In the heart of the Tolowa DeeNi’ Nation ancestorial home, Smith River offers incredible vistas of green pastures, Roosevelt Elk herds and beautiful coastal beaches. Today, the Tolowa Dee-Ni Nation consists of over 500 acres of tribal-owned land with 1,600 tribal members. They offer a refreshing stop for travelers at one of their many properties, including Lucky 7 Casino, House of Howonquet Restaurant, Howonquet Lodge and Lucky 7 Fuel Mart. For the perfect spot for a picnic or an amazing view of the Smith River meeting the Pacific Ocean, turn west on the mouth of the Smith River Road and park in the pullout. You will never be disappointed, regardless of the time of day or time of the year,

as you watch the river water merge with the ocean waves. Sea lions, harbor seals, pelicans and other birds bob in and over the water. Smith River is known as the Easter Lily Capital of the World. The “White Gold Rush,” as the Smith River lily industry has been called, has grown to the point where four farms between the Smith River and the Oregon border account for 90% of the world’s Easter Lily production. Smith River invites you to enjoy its cafes, bed-and-breakfasts, hotels, RV parks and campgrounds. • • • •

FORT DICK N

estled between Crescent City and Smith River is the tiny community of Fort Dick. Locals enjoy one of the best Thai restaurants in the area, Sea West, and the popular Ft. Dick Market. Outdoor adventure possibilities include Crescent Trail Rides horseback riding, Lake Earl Wildlife Area and the northern portion of Tolowa Dunes State Park. At the end of Kellogg Beach Road is the access point to Kellogg Beach, which stretches all the way from Crescent City to Smith River. With acres of rich river bottom soil and pasture lands, Fort Dick is home to Ocean Air Farms, a 15-acre farm offering organic veggies and produce. Their products can be found at their farm stand on Moorehead Road and at local farmers’ markets. Another favorite is Alexandre Dairy, run by the Alexandre family, a regenerative organic dairy farm with an array of regenerative organic products,

including milk, cream, yogurt and pastured organic eggs. You can often spot from the road their hens enjoying the sunshine and fresh air. You can find their products in Whole Foods and other major grocery stores. For a bit of magic on your wedding day, Woodhaven Lower Lake Ranch is the perfect spot for creating unforgettable wedding memories. A beautiful 153acre lakefront and creekside ranch complete with white fences, lily pond, redwood groves, orchards, and to top it off, an elegant barn with honeymoon quarters. Located on US Hwy 199, Hiouchi borders the banks of the unbelievably beautiful turquoise waters of the Smith River. Numerous swimming holes and access points to the river are available where folks can enjoy swimming, kayaking, rafting, hiking and of course, world-class fishing. Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park offers one of the most popular river hot spots in Hiouchi with its day-use river beach, barbecue areas and prime camping in the redwoods. During the summer months, a walking bridge spans the Smith River to take visitors across to Stout Grove, with even more trails and wonders to explore. A motel, café, redwood gifts, local market with deli and other businesses are available in town.

A full-service RV park, Redwood Meadows, offers RV travelers a beautiful spot to pull in and stay awhile; further up the canyon are Smith River National Recreation Area campgrounds. • • • • • • •

GASQUET

T

he little village of Gasquet may be tiny in size, but it’s gigantic in adventure! Perched along the Smith River on U.S. Highway 199, Gasquet is in the Smith River National Recreation Area and has a warmer climate than the coastal communities in Del Norte County. The area is well known for its outdoor adventures, including the annual Gasquet Raft Races and the new kid on the block, BoatSmith Whitewater Festival. Each July, quirky and fun-loving river goers congregate in rustic Gasquet for a day of spectacular, watery fun as they paddle down the pristine Smith River in the Gasquet Raft Races. Spectators are entertained by the decorated rafts and the outfits of the competitors. This community event is for all ages and features delicious and succulent deep pit barbecue, beer tasting and craft vendors. BoatSmith Whitewater Festival is the new outdoor adventure event taking place over President’s Day weekend. Time of year and water flows make it unpredictable, but it is sure to catch on and become a timeless event due to its amazing location. Gasquet has a rich history. It was named after Horace Gasquet, who immigrated to Crescent City in 1855. In 1857, he purchased 320 acres of land at the north and middle forks of the Smith River and set up the village of Gasquet, with a hotel, bar, store, barn, blacksmith shop and winery. • • • • •

Pebble Beach

OCEAN BEACHES D

el Norte County is well known for its fabulous stretch of pristine coastline. Sandy beaches perfect for beachcombing, tidepools for exploring and bluffs that are perfect for whale watching. In Crescent City, there are three surfing beaches right off the road with varying levels of difficulty. And don’t forget about the exciting surf fishing! You’ll find our locals out catching their dinner when the fish are running and in season. Three spots popular among the surfing, paddleboard and kayak community: South Beach – located right next to Highway 101, this beach is perfect for beginner surfing and standup paddleboards. South Beach’s sandy bottom makes it a good spot for body surfing. The further south you go down the beach, the more difficult it becomes. South Beach is also perfect for kite flying and walking since it stretches to Crescent Beach, at the Redwood National and State Parks border. Pebble Beach – located on Pebble Beach Drive, this beach is geared more for intermediate surfing. Pullouts and stairs make for easy access. As its name suggests, Pebble Beach is filled with ocean-rolled pebbles and agates for the rockhound in all of us. The beautiful Castle Rock Wildlife Refuge with its seal lion and elephant seal rookery can be viewed from pullouts and is popular with kayakers during calm seas, although no landing on the Rock is allowed. Garth’s Beach – located at the northern edge of Pebble Beach Drive, this beach is for the advanced surfer as this spot can be dangerous during certain tides and months. Access is available from the bluffs along Point Saint George Road. 16  Discover Del Norte

Other popular beaches include Klamath Beach, Enderts Beach, Kellogg Beach and Pelican Bay Beach, each with its own unique personality. Always be sure to check the tide tables and weather conditions before interacting with the mighty Pacific Ocean; never turn your back to the sea and keep children and pets nearby. RIVERS

T

he region is home to two nationally significant wild rivers, the Smith and the Klamath. Combined, they encompass nearly one thousand stream miles in the National Wild and Scenic River System. These Wild and Scenic designations preserve natural, cultural and recreational values in a free-flowing condition for the enjoyment of present and future generations, making these watersheds an unparalleled destination for river-oriented recreation. Both rivers are known for their salmon, steelhead and many other fish species. See below for fishing seasons, and please contact local outfitters for guiding assistance. The Smith River’s crystal clear water is a magnet for swimmers in the summer and fishing and river runners year-round. 141 miles of the South Fork Smith and its tributaries have been designated as Heritage and Wild Trout Waters, officially recognizing the uniqueness of the fishery and watershed, which support selfsustaining populations of coastal cutthroat trout and coastal rainbow trout. If it’s solitude, rugged beauty, pristine streams and coastal cutthroat trout you’re looking for, the upper South Fork of the Smith River may be your destination. Most of the mid and upper Smith watershed is within the Smith River National Recreation Area, which offers campgrounds and miles of trails and backcountry roads for hikers, mountain bikers and campers. Highway 101 passes near the mouth of the Klamath – the second-largest and the fourth-longest river in California. Here, the forces of nature are on display: tides and river currents are constantly moving and mixing. Sea mammals, including whales and sea lions, can be seen feeding. Visitor amenities include the Historic Requa Inn, RV Parks, jet boat tours of the river and the Yurok Country Visitor Center. This is also an access point for the Coastal Trail, which offers amazing views of the ocean, and in some seasons, vast colonies of nesting seabirds as it winds through coastal forests of Sitka spruce and redwoods.

alk among giants - Crescent City is the home to the Redwood National and State Parks. As the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in California, the Redwood National and State Parks protect 45% of California’s remaining old-growth redwoods. Dozens of trails are available for exploring these majestic giant redwoods, ranging from easy to challenging. Redwood National and State Parks The park is home to some of the world’s tallest trees, old-growth coast redwoods. They can live for 2,000 years and grow over 300 feet tall. Immense and ageless redwoods soar to unimaginable heights. John Steinbeck called them “Ambassadors from another time.” The old-growth redwood groves of Redwood National and State Parks are so ancient, that to explore them is to explore the same forests that have existed here for millennia. Ocean World

A Crescent City jewel for three generations since 1964, Ocean World, formerly Under Sea Gardens, was located in the Crescent City harbor small boat basin. It was a barge that was built as an aquarium in Seattle and then floated down to Crescent City. Visitors would descend below deck and view sea life through underwater observation windows. In 1985, the barge was moved to dry land and now consists of sea-life environments housed in tanks containing over half a million gallons of water and an abundance of sea life, including sharks, seals, sea lions and rays. Visitors can enjoy a hands-on experience with interactive tide pools, shark petting, as well as a high-flying sea lion presentation of behaviors; truly something for the whole family!

Trees of Mystery

Trees of Mystery is California’s premier nature attraction on the North Coast! Celebrating 75 years, they have been educating, entertaining and introducing visitors from the world over to this awe-inspiring natural treasure, the California redwoods. Walk among some of the oldest living things on the planet, let the

SkyTrail gondola glide you through the forest canopy, walk through the treetops on the New Redwood Canopy Trail, feel the history at the End of the Trail Museum and visit the gift shop for a free sample of fudge.

Tsunami Walking Tour destroyed after being pushed off their foundations or damaged by rising waters, resulting in most of the Downtown being rebuilt. But many relics and improvements from the 1964 Tsunami remain ready for you to discover on this short historical tsunami walking tour through Downtown

It started with a 9.2 magnitude earthquake in Alaska that sent tsunami waves surging towards Crescent City. In less than five hours, during the early morning hours of March 28th, 1964, three smaller waves pushed into storefronts and businesses causing little damage and a sense of calm in the people trying to clean up. Then the big wave, cresting at nearly 21 feet, slammed into the Downtown, killing eleven people and devastating 29 city blocks.

Walk southeast on the paved path to the newly built Elk Creek foot bridge. This is where the worst loss of life happened when five people drowned while receding tsunami waters pulled their boat under the highway trapping them.

FILMING MOVIES IN DEL NORTE T

he Redwood Coast of Northern California has been a prime location for feature films, television shows and commercials for nearly a century. Our area has attracted big movie titles such as Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, Jurassic Park: The Lost World, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial and Netflix’s Bird Box. In 2014, the Humboldt-Del Norte Film Commission launched their extremely popular Map of the Movies, a self-guided tour of filming locations originally distributed as paper maps. When demand exceeded the ability to print enough maps, the Commission decided to develop a mobile app for iOS and Android to make it even easier to take the tour and see why these movies were filmed in our beautiful scenery. The new app allows users to access navigation to filming location markers, see posters, view trailers and access IMDB information for each of the featured films, all on their mobile device. New features and content are always being added. Download the app, take the tour and see where the Empire was fought, dinosaurs roamed free and an alien phoned home with your friends and family. CRAFT BEER IN DEL NORTE SeaQuake Brewing Company opened its doors in July 2016. Inspired by their love of craft beer and the beautiful local scenery, the proprietors set out to see what they could brew on a half-barrel system during family barbecues on a ranch north of town. They decided to share their beer and transformed the old brewery building on Front Street into a family-style brewery. In September 2018, they expanded and launched “SeaBucha” to share their passion for healthful kombucha. When you walk in the front doors, the large bar and friendly environment welcome you. Handcrafted metal artwork from a local artist adorns the walls, and a large fireplace warms you from the cold. Patio seating is available to enjoy a beautiful Crescent City summer day. Their menu ranges from pub-style appetizers and brick-oven pizzas to burgers and specialty fresh fish dishes. At SeaQuake, they start each day believing that the best craft beer has yet to be made and pride themselves on using high-quality ingredients to work toward the best. OUR SISTER CITY: RIKUZENTAKATA, JAPAN THE STORY OF KAMOME

F

rom a tsunami to sisterhood, one little boat’s journey across the Pacific created an unforgettable bond between Crescent City, California — home of the California redwoods — and Rikuzentakata, Japan. In April 2013, a mysterious boat, encrusted with barnacles, washed ashore in Crescent City. The words Takata High School (in Japanese) were on the boat. It was discovered that the high school was in Rikuzentakata, a town all but leveled by a tsunami two years prior. Somehow, this little boat survived tragedy to float across the Pacific before finding its way to Crescent City. For being so far apart, Rikuzentakata and Crescent City have a lot in common. Coastal communities along the Pacific, both have vibrant fishing industries and thousands of towering trees. They have also both endured devastating tsunamis. On March 11, 2011, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake caused the Rikuzentakata tsunami, taking the lives of nearly 2,000 people, including 22 Takata High School students. In 1964, a 9.2-magnitude earthquake from Alaska sent a 21-foot wave crashing over Crescent City’s downtown. More than 280 buildings and homes were destroyed, and 11 lives were lost. Students at Del Norte County High School were drawn to the story of the boat and wanted to help. They began cleaning the boat and discovered the boat’s name: Kamome, which means seagull in Japanese. Others made national and international phone calls to see if they could return the boat to the students of Takata High School. Del Norte County students and staff and Commander Bill Steven worked tirelessly to return the boat. In September 2013, Kamome boarded a ship for Japan and found its way back to Takata High School. This exchange formed a bond between Rikuzentakata and Crescent City. Takata and Del Norte County High Schools became Sister Schools in 2014, and students from each school have traveled to visit the other. These two unlikely places have

NBC SPORTS and the SUMMER OLYMPICS While working with Japan to coordinate the Summer Olympic coverage, NBC Sports learned of the Kamome Story and the Little Boat of Hope. built a strong connection that is strengthened by every visit and cultural exchange. And it is all because of one little boat’s voyage across a vast ocean. Officials from both communities continued to build the relationship, resulting in the mutual signing of a Sister City Agreement. The story continues to develop as relationships grow and strengthen. The California State Senate and California State Assembly formally recognized the Sister City relationship in January 2019. THE CHAMBER SERVES ITS MEMBERS AND THE COMMUNITY IN GOOD TIMES AND BAD By Marc Sheforgen

I

t’s very likely that never in their history has the Crescent City/Del Norte Chamber of Commerce played a more important role for member businesses than throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The Chamber is the community’s central hub for business resources and information. And this past year has produced an inordinate amount of questions, confusion and need for information for member businesses. As challenged as she and her team may have been, Chamber Executive Director Cindy Vosburg said that their passion for the job has only been enhanced by the recent challenges. After all, she said, during a pandemic is precisely when a business community needs their Chamber. Vosburg said they’re honored for the opportunity to make a meaningful impact. “I believe that it’s each of our responsibilities to find joy in each and every day,” Vosburg said. “And our joy consisted of helping our members navigate the strange new world that we all found ourselves in.” Cancellations and closures spread throughout the community during the height of the pandemic, which meant incredible stress for numerous employers. “Every time our businesses have to close and reopen, it takes a huge effort on their part to make that pivot,” Vosburg said. “Having to furlough employees and then bring them back, for one thing, it’s a real challenge for them.”

Vosburg said that the Chamber teamed with officials from the city, county, Small Business Development Center, Smart Workforce Center, Yurok Economic Development Corporation and a private business to form the Economic Resiliency Task Force. The group meets weekly to strategize on the best ways to help the local community. “By reaching out to our members and having one-on-one conversations, we were able to figure out how to help them develop game plans to overcome the hardships they were facing in their businesses.” The Chamber and Task Force have provided many resources throughout COVID-19, including information about worker’s compensation rules, PPP loan information, information on signage and paperwork required to reopen, small business grant information, applications for no-interest local business loans and aggressive advocating for area businesses to political representatives in both Sacramento and Washington, D.C. Vosburg, who started at the Chamber just nine months before COVID hit the community, said the Chamber team and other community members want to do whatever it takes to help local businesses succeed regardless of the challenges. “My personal cell phone is on the Chamber recording,” Vosburg said. “I’m happy to talk to people any time of day. You just never know what kind of opportunity there is to help someone whenever that phone rings.” You can reach Cindy Vosburg at (541) 251-0591 or (707) 464-3174.

AGRICULTURE & AGRITOURISM R

umiano Cheese Co. is California’s oldest family-owned cheese company, dedicated to the manufacture and distribution of the highest quality cheese.

Brothers Richard, Fred and John Rumiano emigrated to the United States from Italy at the turn of the 20th century. In 1919, the brothers pooled their resources and purchased a small dairy in Willows, CA. Within a few years, the dairy had grown and the Rumiano brothers started to experiment with butter and cheese production. By the mid-1930s, the enterprise had developed into the largest cheese company in California with eight factories. In 1980, brothers and third-generation family members Baird and John Rumiano, president and vice president respectively, shifted their emphasis to food-service distribution. Some of the company’s current major clients include U.S. Foodservice and Sysco. The Rumiano brothers were known for their high-quality products and their development of Dry Jack cheese. Rumiano’s cheese production occurs in Crescent City, located roughly 10 miles from the Oregon border in northern California. The company receives its milk supply from independent, third and fourth-generation dairy farmers from nearby Humboldt and Del Norte counties. Rumiano assembles and distributes over 300 styles of cheese – from French Brie to Wisconsin Sharp cheddar. The success that Rumiano Cheese Company has acquired over nearly 100 years can be credited to two important factors: a talented and hard-working staff and high-quality milk. The company employs roughly 150 workers for both facilities, most of which have been with Rumiano Cheese Company for over 20 years.

“It all comes down to good people, good ingredients and good products,” Baird Rumiano said. Alexander Family Farm “Here on the Alexandre Family Farm, our regenerative farm practices are setting a new standard in organic, pastureraised dairy farming. We are looking beyond organic and biodynamic certification and we’re raising crossbreed A2/A2 cattle to craft the healthiest, best-tasting milk possible,” Stephanie Alexandre said. On the Northern California Coast, 10 miles south of the Oregon border, the Alexandre Family milks organic grazing cows and raises pastured laying hens. Both fourth-generation dairy farmers, Blake and Stephanie Alexandre raised their kids with the values of hard work and a responsibility to do the right thing at every turn. “We work together as a family, and we focus on the health of our entire ecosystem. It starts with the soil; this is where we cultivate a complex nutrient cycle that takes root in our year-round green grasses and comes full circle on your table in the form of delicious, nutrient-dense organic milk and eggs,” Stephanie said. “We take pride in caring for every aspect of our farm, from the complexities of managing an expansive 4,300-acre farmland to assuring that each individual egg is nest-laid and hand-gathered. We are devoted to farming our way because we believe that the earth’s most delicious, healthiest foods are created when farmers work in harmony with nature. We are more than farmers; we are caretakers with a commitment to stewardship that reaches beyond our farm gate.”

HISTORY OUR HISTORY

NATIVE AMERICAN TRIBES Two tribes of Native Americans lived in Del Norte County before the arrival of white settlers, the Yurok Tribe to the south on the Klamath River and the Tolowa Tribe to the north on the Smith River plains. Both tribes still flourish today and are a rich part of the county’s culture.

Co. built in 1871 it produced 45,000-50,000 feet of lumber per day. The company assisted in supporting growing Del Norte as well as San Francisco. In the 1870’s the railroad was introduced to bring the logs to market. In the 1920’s the Caterpillar tractor and the logging truck displaced the railroad as the most efficient method of logging.

THE TSUNAMI OF ‘64 It came on March 28, 1964, caused by a violent earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale that struck Anchorage, Alaska. The tidal surge that followed destroyed 150 businesses and homes and killed 11 people. The devastation of the tsunami, while not forgotten, resulted in a new local slogan for Crescent City: “Come Back Town U.S.A.!”.

THE TOWNS The first road to penetrate the county was the Crescent City Plank Road to the Illinois River in Oregon. This road was completed in May 1858 and traversed much of the Smith River Canyon. The towns of Klamath and Crescent City were born from the hunger of the gold fields to the east. Treacherous bar and river conditions soon proved too hazardous for Klamath, but Crescent City flourished as a destination for ships from San Francisco. As more people arrived and the gold fields played out, agriculture and timber became primary industries. To the north, the town of Smith River (Four Corners) was established as an agricultural community providing commodities for Crescent City. Soon, timber and fishing became mainstays of the coastal towns. To the east, the hamlet of Gasquet served as a ferry crossing and wayside for travelers to and from points east and west.

TIMBER

Del Norte County’s lumber industry was important to not only its residents but also to the state of California. The timber industry once represented the backbone of the economy in Del Norte County. In 1853 the first mill was established in Crescent City. Oxen originally moved the logs to the mill. The largest mill in the county was that of Hobbs, Pomeroy and 42  32

HISTORY

LIGHTHOUSES Battery Point Lighthouse

The Battery Point Lighthouse is an active lighthouse that acts as a private aid to navigation. Its oil lamps were first lit on December 10, 1856. Lighthouse keepers still tend the light and reside there. A tour of the lighthouse gives the opportunity to look back in time as you visit the personal lighthouse keeper’s quarters and the artifacts left behind since the 1850’s. Tours also include a climb up the spiral staircase to the tower. Many keepers and their families have tended the light in the 160 year history. Also known as the Crescent City Light Station, the lighthouse was operated by the U.S. Lighthouse Service until 1936 when the

St. George Reef Lighthouse

The spectacular St. George Reef Lighthouse sits six miles off our coast. It was constructed in response to the sinking of the steamship Brother Jonathan in July 1865. It took almost 10 years to construct the lighthouse that warns mariners of the treacherous Dragon Rocks. This lighthouse sits on a large rock and reaches a height of 134 feet above the Pacific. The lighthouse lens was placed in the tower in 1892. The light warned mariners for over 80 years. It was abandoned in 1986 by the U.S. Coast Guard and was replaced by an automatic buoy in 1975. The 18 foot, 5,000 pound lens

U.S. Coast Guard took over the operations. The U.S. Coast Guard maintained the light until it was automated in 1953, but the Coast Guard continued to maintain of the Fourth Order Drum lens until 1965 when it was decommissioned. The light is currently a private aid to navigation cared for by the Del Norte County Historical Society. Although tour hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., please remember that the Battery Point Lighthouse sits on a tidal island and is only accessible during low tide. All tours are scheduled as tide permits. Please use care and caution when crossing from the mainland to the island at all times. was dismantled by volunteers and Coast Guard members then reassembled in the Del Norte County Historical Society Museum Bolan Room in 1982. The lighthouse is visible from shore on a clear day. Treacherous seas made docking at the lighthouse a very hazardous duty indeed. The lighthouse is only accessible by helicopter tours hosted by the St. George Reef Preservation Society. The 2019 tours are tentatively scheduled for March 17 and in again April. Participants must meet requirements in order to fly in small a helicopter. Check out the PSGLPS web site or call (707) 442-7873 to reserve a tour. Cost is $300.00 per person.

Commercial Crab fishing is one of the most important economic drivers for Crescent City and Del Norte County. The commercial Dungeness crab fishery is one of the oldest fisheries in California. The fishery began in California around the same time as the Gold Rush in the mid-1800’s. It is also one of the most valuable fisheries in our state. In the 2014 season in California, over 30 million pounds of Dungeness crab were landed with a wholesale value of over $80 million dollars. About 80 percent of the annual catch occurs in the first two months of the seven and a half month season. Female and small male crabs are prohibited from commercial sale and the fishery is closed during the time when females are carrying fertilized eggs. The state is divided into Northern and Southern Areas by the Department of Fish and Wildlife. For the past seventy years the Northern Area has consistently landed millions of pounds more crab per season than the Southern Area. In most years, 50 percent or more of Northern Area landings occur in Crescent City.

SHIPPING In the 1800’s Shipping was a profitable industry of Del Norte County. The location of Crescent City Harbor was a convenient stop for ships traveling from San Francisco to all points north. The Hobbs Wall Company in Crescent city began carrying passengers on steamers such as Elizabeth, Pomeroy, and Del Norte. In fact, reportedly the company held the largest payroll accounts in the country at the time. The Humboldt Times reported, “Crescent City is a rather lively town. Almost every branch of trade is represented; Crescent City will be the most important city north of San Francisco.” In July 1865 the Brother Jonathan Steamer was lost just off our coast after leaving the harbor. The steam driven paddle wheeler went down just north of Crescent City. The steamer was carrying passengers and allegedly a substantial amount of gold. The wreck of the Brother Jonathan still remains as one of the worst shipping disasters on the Pacific coast as over 200 souls were lost.

Did You Know?

• St. George Reef Lighthouse is the most expensive lighthouse ever built in America. • In 1996, the lantern room was removed from St. George Reef Lighthouse as part of the restoration efforts going on at the time. It was lifted off the lighthouse by a helicopter and dropped accidentally onto the beach. The dome was so badly damaged that it had to be replaced with a new custom built one. 2021 | Destination Guide and Business Directory  33 43
