Experience‌ Medieval Spon Street A

real treasure in Coventry City Centre, this historic street provides a picturesque setting of medieval buildings and cobbled pathways. Medieval Spon Street is home to numerous shops and businesses occupying a range of renovated medieval buildings. Visitors can experience a unique selection of high quality and niche shops including hair and beauty salons, elegant boutiques and wonderful restaurants. Fascinating History Medieval Spon Street dates back to the 12th century when it was predominantly occupied by dyers. The fabrics produced were so famous for holding their colour that the saying true as Coventry blue

entered common usage. Coventry city walls The Coventry city wall was built in the 14th century, and a gate was constructed on Spon Street. One of 12 gates, it was known as Bablake Gate, but was renamed Spon Gate in recognition of the settlement known as Spon, which had formed outside the gate. The walls, and Spon Gate, were demolished in the late 18th century and at around the same time, Spon Street saw a shift in the industries based in the area. The street was known as a hub for watchmaking throughout the Edwardian era - a reputation that continued well into the 20th century, when bicycle and motorcycle manufacturers established factories in the area. Spon Street experienced significant change during the Second World War. After one of the worst nights of bombing seen in the UK on November 14 1940, most of Coventry city centre was flattened, however many of Medieval Spon Street’s ancient timber buildings emerged from the FEEL ALIVE WINTER 2012

Blitz intact. During the post-war redevelopment of the city centre, many medieval timber buildings were relocated to the street from elsewhere in the city in an attempt to preserve them. When the Ring Road was built in the 1960s, the street ceased to function as the main thoroughfare out of Coventry. 21st Century Street Spon Street was designated a Conservation Area by Coventry City Council in 1969. Twenty-first century Medieval Spon Street is home to a wide selection of salons, boutiques, restaurants, public houses and a museum operating either from original or relocated medieval buildings.

Blitz Family Day Sat 17 November 10am to 4pm Experience life during World War II at this very special event commemorating the anniversary of the Coventry Blitz. On Saturday 17 November, three of Coventry’s most iconic sites will be turning back the clock, to offer a variety of family activities aimed at giving children a glimpse into the past, to see what their lives might have been like during the 1940s. With different activities at Coventry Transport Museum, Coventry Cathedral and The Herbert, you can spend the whole day enjoying make do and mend, wartime cooking, code breaking and first aid, collecting stamps for each activity you complete - or simply drop in and have a go at one or two. Visit either www.transport-museum.com, www.theherbert.org, or www.coventrycathedral.org.uk for the full programme of activities.

Crackers Sat 8 - Sat 22 Dec Leonard’s life is a complete and utterly weird pantomime. Trapped behind the checkout at Myrrh’s Bazaar, a cut-price Christmas shop, he longs to escape, find true love and live his dreams. But his boss, the astonishingly evil entrepreneur Archibald Myrrh, has other abominable plans… As ever, the B2 Xmas Show has been created especially for grown-ups so it’s perfect for office parties or anyone who wants to enjoy a Christmas night out away from the kids. And as it only lasts around an hour, it leaves you plenty of time to complete your evening with a few celebratory drinks at the bar.

The Hairy Bikers - Larger Than Live Tour Thurs 14 & Fri 15 March 2013 10am to 5pm “It’s now been over two years since we did our last stage tour, a complete sell-out and one of the best times of our lives. It’s for those reasons that we can’t wait to do it all over again; only this time it’s going to be bigger, bolder, funnier, and packed with more food and laughs than ever before. We like to do things a little differently to most, which is why we’re not just giving you a show, we’re giving you a real night out. There will be some cooking and a chance for some of our lucky audience members to enjoy a slap up meal on stage courtesy of the (Hairy) chefs.”

ScooterMania Fri 26 October 2012 to 3 March 2013 10am to 5pm This Autumn and Winter, be transported to the 1950s and 60s, as Coventry Transport Museum presents a delightful new exhibition of British scooters from these two fascinating decades. Whilst many people are familiar with the Italian scooters favoured by the Mod generation, this new exhibition showcases over 40 scooters made right here in Britain - and there are quite a few weird and wonderful surprises in store. Of course the scooters themselves are the stars of the show, but they are complemented by eye-catching displays of advertising, fashion and furnishings from the 50s and 60s, to create an experience that is both nostalgic and surprising, and is bound to get you talking! His Dark Materials: new art by Adie Blundell Sat 24 November - Sun 17 March 2013 “His Dark Materials” is the first solo exhibition by Coventry-based artist Adie Blundell. Blundell’s work is composed of new and found materials - sculptures are formed from plaster, latex, salt and iron, incorporating keys, locks, light switches and medical equipment. Inspired by alchemy, folklore, poetry and obsessive Victorian collecting, the works reflect the multiple obsessions which dominate Blundell’s life. HIS DARK MATERIALS raises questions about the very nature of human existence and our precarious position within the natural world. Admission is FREE. www.theherbert.org - 024 7683 2386

Campers Christmas Vans vs Vespas! 18 November 2012 On the evening of Coventry’s Christmas Light Switch On last year, Millennium Place in front of Coventry Transport Museum was filled with a festive light display with a difference, as the Campers Christmas event saw an array of ‘blinged’ camper vans lighting up the square to create a fabulous spectacle. This year, Campers Christmas returns for 2012 even bigger and better, as we invite scooter owners to join in, in a ‘Vans vs. Vespas Bling-Off’! During the afternoon of Sunday 18 November, camper vans and scooters (they don’t have to be Vespas - any scooter is welcome) will begin to assemble in Millennium Place, and a range of festive entertainment will be on offer, as the vehicle owners cover their vans and scooters in Christmas lights and decorations. www.transport-museum.com - 024 7623 4270

PURE FITNESS

If you’re looking to lose those extra pounds gained over Christmas, Chris Woodhall, assistant manager and personal trainer at Coventry’s Pure Gym gives us his top tips to achieving the best results!

1

hris, I’m thinking of shaping up and getting C fit, where should I start? Firstly, join a gym or an organisation that offers the type of activity and support you like, you may just decide to jog outdoors, that’s fine, everything counts. Get yourself into regular training; commitment to regular training is one of the biggest obstacles we face with such busy, manic lives. Build a base level of fitness, and then look to tweak your training to achieve the most effective results possible.

2

Should I check with my doctor before I begin my new exercise regime? I would always recommend seeking a medical professional’s advice when starting an exercise programme for peace of mind and for your safety, especially if you haven’t taken part in physical activity for a while. Just take your time, go steady and let your body adjust to your new training demands. Here at Pure Gym we do Health Checks; these are a great way to check your current condition and can potentially highlight any issues.

3

re there any restrictions to getting fit? Could A I be too old or too young? You are never too old, too young, too unfit or too busy. Exercise should always be an important part of your life. There are so many benefits that come with regular exercise; it contributes to many positive areas of your life, both physiological and psychological. Weight management, mobility, increased energy levels and self-esteem are just some.

4 5

ow is a personal trainer able to help me boost my H efforts in losing weight? It is my belief that personal training is an education in maximising results and making the most of the time you spend training. It’s true there are more effective training techniques than others. Fitting these into your client’s capabilities will help achieve quicker, realistic results.

re there any quick and simple exercises I’m able A to do at home which can help? There are a large amount of effective exercises you can do at home without the need for expensive equipment. Exercises such as press ups, squats, lunges, pull ups or sit ups, can all be done in the comfort of your home. Because these are multi joint exercises which work big muscle groups, working these will use large amounts of energy.

46

FEEL ALIVE WINTER 2012

6

ow does my diet affect my bid for a healthier lifestyle? H Firstly, I try and refrain from using the word “diet” as it denotes short term restriction with short term gains, often sacrificing long term sustainability; I believe in healthy, nutritional eating. Most would be shocked to hear that nutrition accounts for approximately 80% of your results. It is a massive contribution to a healthy new YOU. Eating good, nutritious food will help the body function more effectively in your day to day life and help fuel your workout to be more effective.

7

re there any top dietary tips you can recommend to boost A my new regime? Reduce and cut down on high energy, low nutrient value food such as bread, pasta and rice and replace these with more nutritious value foods such as salads and vegetables. Avoid processed foods which contain a high amount of chemicals. Avoid or limit coffee and tea, try two cups of Green tea or drink water and avoid fizzy sugary snacks. Drink your recommended water intake and stay hydrated, roughly 2-2.5 litres a day. This promotes weight loss, removes toxins from the body and allows your body to function better. Dehydration is sometimes mistaken for hunger, causing us to consume unnecessary energy (measured in calories) which we don’t need. Don’t just cut everything ‘bad’ out, as you will just crash and burn; reduce bad foods in small simple steps as your training progresses with time.

8

I feel a little apprehensive about venturing into the gym; can I take part in any exercise classes with others who may be feeling the same? Exercise classes are a great way to build confidence, learn new training techniques and meet likeminded people. We offer over 40 classes at Pure Gym and each is suitable for different levels of fitness and abilities. Classes are great for building self-confidence and/or meeting new friends.

9

hat are the benefits of keeping up my routine throughout W the year? If you train regularly, it has been shown that people take much more pride and care in themselves physical and mentally. Training regularly throughout the year will encourage discipline, focus and commitment. A more important note is that unfortunately most western diseases that are now prevalent in today’s society are linked to life style, nutrition and exercise. Training throughout the year will help control and reduce the chances of succumbing to these particular ailments.

Can you recommend any simple ideas to help me maintain my new exercise programme? Plan and commit to your training; diary management is so important, create and schedule time in your diary for a week or months’ worth of training. Why not book your exercise classes online in advance, so you’re mentally committed to attend? Setting realistic and objective goals will help you stay motivated, especially ones that can be measured or justified provide more motivation.
