H

armony was founded in 1804 by German Lutheran Separatists seeking religious freedom. The Harmonists, who believed Christ’s return was imminent, adopted celibacy to remain spiritually pure, but this also ensured the group’s eventual demise. After two hundred years, the society lives on through the historic architecture, landmarks, cemeteries, and events that celebrate the town’s heritage. This charming town retains the old world architectural character of an old German village and includes more than 50 buildings, nine of which are owned by the nonprofit historical society and preservation group, Historic Harmony. Another belief of the Harmonists can be seen in their cemetery located just outside of town—you won’t find any grave markers for the approximately 100

society members buried there. If you go for a visit, try your luck opening the cemetery’s one-ton stone gate that revolves evenly on its center. Every year, thousands of visitors attend events like the WeihnachtsMarkt (German Christmas Market) and the Silvester New Year’s Eve Celebration, where you can ring in the New Year on German time at 6 PM in remembrance of the founder’s heritage.
