You can follow marked paths around the reservation area or enjoy the island and birds by boat. Some of Norway’s famous fjords are situated in this area, with the UNESCO World Heritage listed Geirangerfjord as the top attraction, and Tafjord as the secret gem. Along the fjords you
will spot mountain farms high up on the mountain sides, in places you wouldn’t believe people and livestock could survive. Explore the saga island of Giske, the birthplace of the Viking chieftain Rollo. He invaded and founded Normandy in 911 and thus became the ancestor of William the Conqueror, sire to the English Royal Family. The island had a unique position during the Viking age and was the seat of one of Norway’s most powerful noble families. The marble Giske Church, dating back to the 1150, was once the influential Giske family chapel. On Godøy island, you will find the picturesque fishing village Alnes facing the Atlantic Ocean. Take a coffee break at Alnes Lighthouse & Visitor Centre. Enjoy temporary art in the centre and the permanent exhibition of the local and nationally renowned artist Ørnulf Opdahl in the old lighthouse. Returning to Ålesund, stop at the view point on Mount Aksla and enjoy the stunning panoramic view from Fjellstua.
Ålesund was destroyed by a devastating fire on the 23rd of January 1904. The reconstruction was designed by 50 Norwegian architects, strongly inspired by an international influence of Art Nouveau and National Romanticism. Between 1904–1907 more than 400 houses were rebuilt. During those years, the town has achieved a unique place in Norwegian architectural history. Its international significance is confirmed through participation in a European network of Art Nouveau including among others Glasgow, Vienna, Riga and Barcelona. Explore the underwater world on this interactive tour to Atlanterhavsparken, one of the largest aquariums in Northern Europe. Enjoy the show in the large ocean tank and see the diver hand-feeding the fish. Pick up a lobster, a starfish, a sea cucumber or other sea creatures in the activity room and try out your luck fishing crabs on a line! The penguins and otters live in outdoor pools and are happy to have company on the other side of the fence. Geirangerfjord is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Norway. The fjord is surrounded by steep mountains, majestic waterfalls and old deserted farms clinging on to small ledges half way up the mountain sides. Experience the scenic Eagles’ Road towering over the small village of Geiranger, populated by 260 inhabitants in wintertime and visited by half a million tourists during the summer season. A ferry trip will give you close-up views of the famous waterfalls and farmhouses – the best possible way to experience the Geirangerfjord.
In the beautiful setting of wild mountains, roaring waterfalls and peaceful nature, you can understand how the myths of trolls originated! At 2.500 feet above sea level, surrounded by dramatically shaped mountain peaks, you can enjoy a stunning view before descending Trollstigen which winds its way down in 11 narrow hairpin bends, clinging to the mountain side. You will pass the dramatic Stigefossen waterfall, with a drop of 585 feet. The Troll Wall (Trollveggen) is Europe’s highest vertical mountain wall, 1000 metres high, with some of the world’s most difficult climbing routes.
A full day excursion with bus, train, lunch and exciting stops on the way – welcome to the land of the trolls! Bus from Ålesund to Bjorli with coffee and photo stop at Trollveggen (the Troll’s Wall) at Åndalsnes. Trollveggen is an impressive row of looming mountain peaks surrounding a spectacular valley. The famous railway trip with train from Bjorli to Åndalsnes is a unique opportunity to experience scenic areas of Norway. Just above the fascinating fishing village Alnes and facing the ocean lies the mountain of Godøy. On a hiking trip to Godøyfjellet mountain, you will have a refreshing experience of Norwegian nature and the outdoors. From Alnes lighthouse and visitor centre, you hike up to the fishing lake Alnesvatnet and along the fairly flat edge of the mountain, where your reward is a beautiful view of the ocean and surrounding islands. After the descent back to Alnes, you can breathe out and enjoy a cup of coffee and cake before heading back to Ålesund town centre.
Hike to the peak of Sukkertoppen (Sugar Loaf Mountain) on Hessa Island to admire the spectacular views. Try your fishing luck on board a small local fishing boat! The fishing excursion will take you on an enjoyable ride out to the waters around Ålesund, to some of your skipper’s favourite spots. The catch can include fish like cod, haddock, pollack and saithe. The coastline, containing islands and fjords, provides shelter in most weather conditions. Fishing on the outskirts of town offers not only good waters, but also beautiful scenery. While fishing, you will have some of Norway’s most dramatic landscapes as a backdrop.
Your sea kayaking experience starts next to the ferry pier to Langevåg and the cruise harbour of Ålesund. After the instruction you will be paddling along the town centre, skerries and islands. TOUR DESCRIPTION A short coach ride from the town centre takes you approx. 4 km to the starting point of the hike, on the island of Hessa. The climb starts above the local school and takes you through various narrow pathways along the ridge of mount Sukkertoppen. You will reach the mountain peak in approximately one hour. Coffee and snacks at the vantage point before you make your descent down the mountain. The participants carry their own snack. The guide will bring along a first aid kit for your safety. When the hike is over, you will return to the pier by coach. TOUR DESCRIPTION The fishing trips are operated with the skipper as your local fishing guide. Each fishing vessel takes small groups out to the fishing grounds to the nearby islands and fjords surrounding Ålesund. A close look at the walls, ceilings and floors will still reveal physical reminders of the 165-year-old industrial history.
Enjoy a scenic tour by boat to the Arctic Museum “Aarvak” in Brandal. Norways largest polar museum was opened in 1981 and holds a fascinating collection of arctic animals and birds, hunting equipment and nearly 2.000 photographs. Outside the museum and located in a separate boat house is the protected sealing vessel “Aarvak”, the oldest of its kind. The museum is also a fairy-tale of true heroes of the polar seas – men fighting against the forces of nature and homesickness. Many of them never returned. Sealing became an industry of great value for the whole nation. On the ground floor of the Arctic museum, you will find a shop with a large selection of polar books, souvenirs and gifts, some of them made of sealskin.
The picturesque and tiny fishing village of Ona is situated right out in the open ocean. Some years ago, all houses on Ona were inhabited and the island contained an area for delivery and storage of fish. Today, the farms and fish storage are no longer active and many people have left the island, which now has approximately 15 inhabitants. The quaint houses are still looked well after and you can sense the hustle and bustle of years gone by – especially during summer, when the houses are full of life and activity. Only a short walk from the quay lies the farm Steffågarden, a typical example of the combination farms on the islands.
The bird sanctuary Runde has one of the largest nesting cliffs in Norway. More than half a million birds of about 230 different species are present at Runde every year. The active bird life starts in March and ebbs out gradually throughout the months of July/ August. This myriad of winged life can be observed either from marked paths around the reservation or from a boat at sea. Due to a rough coastline, many ship-wrecks have occurred off Runde island in centuries past. One of them, the Dutch ship “Akerendam”, sank in 1725 with a cargo of gold and silver coins. You can admire these coins yourself in the exhibition at Runde Miljøsenter (Environment & Research Centre).

Start climbing the 418 steps to Fjellstua on Mount Aksla. Stop at “Byrampen” selfie spot half way up the steps, before continuing to the top. Enjoy the spectacular view of the town centre beneath your feet from the terrace at Fjellstua. From this point the town looks like a “Lilliput town”, or like many people say, a Lego town! The surrounding area of fjords and islands look like a map alive. From the view point, you can enjoy a hike on the mountain looking for the special wooden fairy tale figures hiding in the bushes around the pathways. Amongst them are “nisser”, pixies and bears. Small lakes that used to be drinking water reservoirs for the town are located between the pathways. Have a snack at Fjellstua on return, before descending the steps and heading back to the pier. Explore the underwater world on this interactive tour to Atlanterhavsparken, one of the largest aquariums in Northern Europe. Enjoy the show in the large ocean tank and see the diver hand-feeding the fish. Pick up a lobster, a starfish, a sea cucumber or other sea creatures in the activity room and try out your luck fishing crabs on a line! The penguins and otters live in outdoor pools and are happy to have company on the other side of the fence. Knut the seal, and the rest of his family lives happily in the large Seal Bay facing the Atlantic Ocean. At the end of the visit, we head out to the surrounding outdoor area of Tueneset. Children can challenge themselves in this historic playground area. A natural park full of small pathways with bunkers and remains from the second World War dotted around the place. They are watching you – and we don’t mean the CCTV cameras. You know the feeling; you turn around and there is someone staring at you… In Ålesund it’s like that all the time, everywhere you go. The little creatures on the facades of the town’s buildings are watching you. We call them the Yoogons. It started like this: The town was rebuilt after a great fire in 1904, and these small glowing creatures, the Yoogons, were blamed for the fire. As a punishment they were cemented into the facades of the new houses during the reconstruction of the town. 100 years later, they were given the opportunity to come out, just for one night, to prove their innocence. This guided walk, a mixture of facts & fiction, is an excellent and entertaining way to arouse children’s interest in architecture!

Molo Brew is a microbrewery, situated at the cruise pier Stornespiren in Ålesund. They develop hand crafted beer and offer a wide selection of homemade brews. Food and various other drinks are also on the menu and a shuffleboard is ready for the guests. Their location is at the cruise pier, only two steps away for cruise passengers.
A guided tour through the town of Ålesund with a visit to the Art Nouveau Centre, the KUBE Art Museum, JACU coffee brewery and KHÅK art gallery. The Art Nouveau Centre Jugendstilsenteret is located in the old Swan Pharmacy from 1907 and is both a museum and a national centre of Art Nouveau. A guided tour through Aalesund with a historical review of the time when Chieftain Rollo, son of the local Earl Ragnvald, lived in the region of Sunnmøre. The tour guides will be dressed in authentic Viking outfits, and will tell stories as told in local folklore and the Icelandic writer Snorri Sturluson’s book “Heimskringla”. The tour is by foot, with frequent pauses where you will be presented with stories from the Viking’s everyday life, their legal system, religion and Rollo’s journey from being the outlaw son of the local Earl to become the ancestor of all European Royalty.

Concerts with music based on Norwegian folk songs and folk music, inspired by Norwegian landscape and sceneries. The concerts can easily be added on to any of the regular excursions. Performed by pianist Jan Hovden and violinist Ove Kvangarsnes among others. The concerts are held in the more than 100 years old concert hall “Avholdshjemmet”, located a short walk from the cruise port. The building was erected in 1906 and is a mix of New Gothic and Art Nouveau style. The hall used to be the main concert hall in Ålesund until 30-40 years ago. Today, it is having a “renaissance” as a frequently used concert arena as well as a location for other events. The musicians will be present music influenced by Norwegian folk music and folk songs as well as Norwegian sceneries. The music is mainly composed by Edvard Grieg, Ole Bull and Johan Halvorsen. All inspired by “Norwegian moods” like Edvard Grieg. You may listen to famous pieces like Grieg’s Solveig’s Song, Anitra’s Dance (both from Peer Gynt Music). Piano pieces like “To the Spring” and dozens of other lyrical pieces as well as piano based on tunes played on the folk instrument/violin and many small pearls based on folk songs.

Are you up for a challenge? Try canyoning, an amazing nature experience in a spectacular environment! Follow an exciting and challenging course through the canyon, including rappelling, tight ropes, cliff jumping, bouldering, zip lining and swimming. The activities take place in Gudbrands Canyon, approximately 15 km from downtown Valldal, in the direction of Trollstigen. The canyon is truly breath-taking, and the water runs between vertical granite walls.

SCUBA DIVING Ålesund has a lot to offer scuba diving enthusiasts. Well- established scuba diving scene with operators offering customised diving experiences. All necessary equipment is available. GOLF Ålesund Golf Club’s home course Solnør Gaard Golfbane lies in stunning surroundings about 30 km from Ålesund, approx. 30 minutes by car/bus from the port/town centre. The course has 18-holes, varying between park and woodland. HISTORICAL VIKING PLAYS Several historical plays staged in different parts of Sunnmøre tell the story of the Vikings and their singular history of the raiding and pillaging they did a thousand years ago.
NORWEGIAN FOLKLORE SHOW Ålesund Spelemannslag, a group of active folk dancers and musicians, are amongst the best folklore groups in the country. Dressed in national costumes they are also quite a spectacular sight. Special shows can be arranged. Their performance can either be incorporated in a guided tour (Sunnmøre Open Air Museum is a good location, so is the Fjellstua viewpoint) or in a special evening arrangement. The folklore group can also arrange a show aboard the cruise ship if desired. ARTS & CRAFTS TOUR Explore the arts & crafts of local artists. Visit Ingrid’s Glassverksted, an exciting glassworks studio, and see how the products are created. The artist will give you a demonstration of how the colourful glassware are shaped. Make a visit to Gallery Cylindra in Sykkylven and enjoy an exhibition of sculptural furniture designed by the well-known Norwegian designer, Peter Opsvik.
