EFFECTIVE LIGHTING: CRUCIAL FOR SAFETY Many school districts are upgrading their buses with strobe beacons to increase visibility of the bus, but what about upgrading the path that children walk to get on and off the school bus? Over 100 fatalities each year are related to school bus transportation. Children are most at risk of an injury while stepping on or exiting the bus and crossing the street in front of the bus, especially on dark mornings in rural areas. With improved lighting, on-coming traffic can quickly spot pedestrians and children can see the stairs and the curb as they load and unload the bus each day.
