In a show of support to further education, IOT has launched a three-year collaboration with ABDO College. The move was celebrated with the recent opening of the IOT Dispensing Suite, ready for the new term. IOT will collaborate with the college – together with Caledonian Optical, Optimum RX Lens Specialists and Norville – to help drive knowledge, learning and innovation within the ophthalmic lenses industry. Training materials will cover different optical concepts and processes.

Dr Robert Cubbidge, principal of ABDO College, said: “It was with great pleasure that we welcomed IOT and their partners to ABDO College. The high quality teaching materials they have provided will ensure that our students are able to understand the latest technological advances being made in the ophthalmic lens industry, and how they can benefit patients.”

General Optical Council

The General Optical Council (GOC) has published two new guides relating to its CPD scheme – ‘CPD record review: a guide for registrants’, and ‘Guide to audit of providers of CPD’ – to help explain what’s involved. The guides contain: an introduction to the record review/provider audit process, including why and when it takes place and how registrants/providers will know if they’ve been selected; and an outline of the process, including what will be looked at, potential outcomes, and next steps following receiving these outcomes. Now available in the UK and Ireland with a full 2,300 parameters, new Dailies Total1 for Astigmatism is the first and only daily disposable toric contact lens to feature Alcon’s water gradient material. The lens material features a gradual increase in water content, approaching 100 per cent water at the surface – so all that touches the eye is a cushion of moisture, said the company.

The lens integrates Alcon’s the SmarTears Technology, which features the release of an ingredient found naturally in tears that helps to stabilise the lipid layer of the tear film.

These technologies are now combined with Alcon’s proven Precision Balance 8|4 lens design: the proven design used in both the Precison1 and Air Optix plus HydraGlyde toric contact lenses.
