New E-Heath Focus Group Optical Suppliers Association

The rise of software as a medical device, and accountability for the profession when utilising new diagnostic technologies, is to be addressed by the Optical Suppliers Association’s (OSA) new E-Health Focus Group. The group is expecting to draw members from across the optical supply chain, including contact lens and dry eye treatment providers – as well as those in the surgical field supplying ophthalmologists.

Leading the new group is Karl Jeebaun, CEO of Advanced Ophthalmic Systems. He said: “We need to form a collective view as to where the industry is going and the role software can play in supporting the profession. There are many issues to be addressed and we need to ensure the right trajectory for adoption.” Find out more at www.osa-uk.co.uk

ABDO

Professional bodies and organisations from across the optical community are speaking up in support of the Association of British Dispensing Opticians’ (ABDO) second SEE Summit on the Environment – from 7-8.30pm on 3 October. This online evening event is open to all and will bring together progress within the sector on social, ethical and environmental (SEE) issues. Jayne Abel, chair of the Optical Suppliers Association’s Sustainability Committee, said: “Our work in the past year has brought positivity and optimism, and it is inspiring to see cooperation across the entire optical community to learn about sustainable practice and embrace rigorous standards of social and environmental performance.

“From significant reductions in packaging and single-use plastic to carbon-reducing strategies in manufacture and freight and eco-material innovation in product development, there have never been more

Alcon

Alcon and the World Council of Optometry (WCO) have partnered to form a global, evidence-based dry eye disease education initiative to improve optometrists’ understanding of dry eye aetiology and prevalence, diagnosis and practical management.

The initiative will feature the collected insights of several world-renowned opinion leaders, and a simplification of the latest research covering different aspects of dry eye disease. Each will include related, easy-to-implement educational materials.

“The impact of dry eye on quality of life is comparable to other disabling conditions, and even mild to moderate dry eye can reduce quality of life,” said Carla Mack, global head, professional affairs for Alcon. “We’re excited to help more optometrists access the latest data and world-class faculty so that more patients who suffer from dry eye disease find treatment and relief.” www.worldcouncilofoptometry.info
