STRAIGHT TALK

Kissing on screen is no big deal

There was a time when the sizzling Mallika Sherawat would take the screen by fire with her tempestuous passion and her umpteen kisses. However when the going was not too good, the actress decided to cross over to Hollywood, where she explored several projects, without much success. Now the controversial actress is back in Bollywood flaunting her body and her sex-appeal in her latest film, Dirty Politics. She talks about her journey so far and her aspirations for the future.

I am definitely open to television offers, whether it’s a reality show or a soap opera 6 March 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au

STRAIGHT TALK

I never aimed at being on the list of known directors

From Bollywood to Hollywood and back to Bollywood, how has the journey been? It’s been a great journey from a small town girl Haryana to films and then discovering America, Hollywood and meeting the U.S. President. Now I am back in Bollywood with a vengeance. I would say it has been one of the most adventurous journeys in my career and I have enjoyed every moment of it. Between the characters you played in the Hollywood film, Politics of Love and the Bollywood film, Dirty Politics, which one would you say was a better experience? Politics of Love was a romantic comedy and an American project. Dirty Politics was an Indian film revolving around the dirty and manipulative side of politics. The film portrayed the situations that faced by Bhanwari Devi, (the folksinger who rose from a midwife to power and fame with her association with political figures) and her greed and ambition, which eventually led to her end. The character of Anokhi Devi was shown using her body as a weapon to achieve her goals. Do you feel that women in real life put themselves at stake when they get close to politicians and people take advantage of their vulnerability? It all depends on how women handle things in a particular situation. In the case of this character, it was her poverty and her helplessness that made her go to these lengths. I personally feel that no woman would like to be exploited in such a way but she is compelled to do so in certain situations. Anokhi Devi is a very independent

woman but she uses her body to attain her goals and people think she is corrupt. How difficult was it doing the intimate scenes with a seasoned actor like Om Puri? Did you feel uncomfortable? Om-ji helped me go through the intimate scenes without much awkwardness. He realized that I was initially nervous and told me that all it was part of professionalism. He also gave me examples of how he had done some intense love-making scenes with the legendary Rekha. I blurted out that he was young then and he was old now, over which he laughed aloud. Without his help, I could have never done the scene showing Anokhi Devi climbing the ladder of success with the help of this sex CD. The entire scene was choreographed and it was the most difficult scene in my entire career.

There has been a lot of talk about the abusive language used in the film and the skin show? I don’t understand why such a big issue has been made around my character in the film. I guess it is because of the bias between men and women and the way they are perceived. When men abuse on screen, people cheer and clap but when a woman abuses they make an issue out of it. When a superstar like Aamir Khan is shown nude on screen they say it’s the need of the story. But when actresses expose they seem to be shocked. Isn’t this differentiation?

STRAIGHT TALK

I don’t think a director approaches a heroine just because she has got a hot figure

Do you think that a few bad films can put an actor’s stardom at stake? I think every actor goes through the phase of good and bad films. Even superstar Amitabh Bachchan, had to go through the highs and lows in his career. He too put his home and everything at stake to start a new innings in Bollywood. Its part of every actor’s life but you should keep working and not let it affect you. At one point you were seen actively hobnobbing with the cream of Hollywood but you haven’t been doing too many films there too? I recently did the CBS series ‘Hawaii Five-O’. I think it’s necessary to take up the right kind of roles if you have to make a mark in your career. If you don’t choose your initial roles perfectly there is the danger of getting stereotyped. Besides you don’t come across performance-oriented roles every day. Does it worry you that you are not on the list of well known directors? I never aimed at being on the list of known directors. I always wanted to stand on my feet and earn my own money, pay my own bills. I am proud to be a liberated girl who is living a life on her own terms. I have achieved fame on my terms. Imagine a girl from a small town of Hisar from Haryana going to America and speaking to the President Barrack Obama about Bollywood. What more can I achieve? I have already done two Hollywood films Politics of Love and Hisss and I am doing a series Hawaii Five-O. I think I have fairly succeeded in my career. Do you expect makers to approach you for your sex appeal as they did before? I guess only the directors can answer that

8 March 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au

question. I think every actress is hot and sexy and has a figure to die for. I don’t think a director approaches a heroine just because she has got a hot figure. Kissing on screen is no big deal either. I got Dirty politics because the director liked my work. Your last attempt to find love through the reality show, The Bachelorette India, didn’t seem to yield results. Have you finally found love? It was merely a dating show. We never promised marriage. I did the show because I wanted to reach out to young girls in small towns and tell them that it’s okay to meet a guy. I managed to do that and we also touched upon a lot of issues on the show.

Are you still open to doing television here? I am definitely open to television offers, whether it’s a reality show or soap. I have been approached for roles too but I am not quite convinced with the kind of offers I have got so far. The story has to be compelling because TV is a big commitment and you are shooting round the clock. Any plans of going back to Hollywood soon? I am here now. I have not really planned anything as yet. By S. Bhagat

COVER STORY

Your amazing transition from a happygo-lucky lover boy to a revenge-seeking angry man in your recently released film, Badlapur has shocked audiences and industry pundits alike. How difficult was the transition? It was no doubt tough getting into the skin of the character because I had done all the lover boy roles prior to this film. The character was also way apart from the kind of person I am in real life. It was only after doing several script-reading sessions and workshops that I mentally prepared myself for the role. I was asked to stay in isolation to feel Raghu’s sadness and grief. To put me in that zone, I would also hear sad songs and light ghazals. Some of our shooting venues were the Nasik central jail and morgue and Intensive Care Units of hospitals. We shot the film over eight months and it was a tough deal. How difficult was it playing a father for the first time on screen? It was a little unusual playing a father at the age of 27. I was also clueless about how a man behaves in his 40s. So I started preparing myself for the character by observing my elder brother Rohit, who is married and has a beard and a receding hairline. However, the toughest part of the role however was to control my high energy because this character was different. I discovered a lot of other things too while playing the role, especially the human nature which can be scary at times. I think we all have a dark side in us and we can drift into that direction when we are faced with hopeless situations. Didn’t you consider the film a risky proposition? Badlapur was no doubt a major risk but it was also a passion project for me. It was a niche film made in a budget of Rs 16 crores- my lowest budget film till date. I also cut down my fees drastically for the project. On my part, I felt the role offered me an opportunity to try out something different. www.visionasia.com.au | March 2015 11

“At any time, I will enjoy playing the role of Humpty more than the revengeseeking Raghu 12 March 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au

Apparently, your father David Dhawan was not in favour of you attempting such a role so early in your career? My father was skeptical after he first heard the script. He felt that I was far too young to play the role of a father in any film. Apart from that, he too had his own reservations about how far I would be comfortable playing a serious and gritty role. But he was convinced after he heard the second narration from director Sriram Raghavan. At the end of the day he is also a filmmaker and he understands the whole process. He knows that I cannot play a lover boy all my life and actors do need to experiment with such roles once in a while.

How did your elder brother react to the film and are you happy with the reactions you got for the film? It was my elder brother who first encouraged me to go ahead with the role. He was an inspiration point for me. Apart from that, I am surprised by the overwhelming response I got from the young audiences. The youth have been enthusiastic about the film from day one when we launched the trailers and the posters. I am glad that such films are finding increasing acceptance with young audiences. Recently, we also had another film Haider, which did not confirm to commercial norms but did exceedingly well at the box-office. We are all working here

point to meet my friends once in a while. Our respective careers don’t really affect the nature of our friendship.

Having worked with various directors, how different was the experience working with Karan Johar, David Dhawan and now Sriram Raghavan? The acting process changes from one director to another. Karan Johar’s style of direction is different from my father, David Dhawan, so is that of Sriram Raghavan. On my part, I have always kept in mind that the director is the captain of the ship no matter how good I am at my job. I believe it is this faith in my directors that has got me so far in my career. I guess my decision to do one film at a time has also paid off so far. Are you planning to do more such roles in the thriller genre in the future? Badlapur was a serious film and I am happy that I attempted the role and got a new experience but I prefer comedies more than anything else. At any time, I will enjoy playing the role of Humpty more than the revenge-seeking Raghu. Do you take your character home after your shoot or are you a switch-on and switch-off actor? I have learnt to disconnect myself from the character once the director calls off the shot. When you do an action-oriented role or some gimmicks on screen, you have to keep practicing those things but you cannot afford to experience all those stormy emotions once the camera is switched off. I must admit I had a difficult time disconnecting myself from the character of Raghu in Badlapur. There were times when I would vent out my frustrations on my mother after going home. Now that I have started shooting for next film ABCD 2, I am happy I am coming out of it. ABCD 2 falls into an entirely different genre. Are you excited about your role in the film? In ABCD 2 we started with two songs and I had to learn to dance really well. It was a different grooming process. It was like

Has your equation with your friends especially Alia Bhatt changed after Badlapur? Like I said, I was living an isolated existence while doing the film. I was almost cut off from the rest of the world except my costars and Sriram Raghavan. I lost touch with most of my friends. The film also affected my equation with some very good friends including Alia but I plan to catch up on all of them now that I have got over the film. Are you a more confident actor now? Do you feel filmmakers will now take you more seriously after Badlapur? I was always a confident actor but Badlapur has made me a more matured actor with a new approach to life. I am glad I experienced the film. As for filmmakers, I hope filmmakers take me seriously; all actors want their directors to take them seriously. What next? After completing ABCD 2, I will be doing a film with my brother Rohit Dhawan costarring Jacqueline Fernandez. That is another interesting film but I cannot reveal much at this stage. a rehab for me. I try to look for diverse characters and traits when I choose a film now. Are you in touch with your friends Arjun Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Siddharth Malhotra? I know Arjun Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Rhea Kapoor and Alia Bhatt for a long time now and we have all been friends. Siddharth is one good friend who came into my life after we started working together. I haven’t been able to catch up on my friends for a long time now as each of us is busy with our own films. From the chocolate hero to the angry young man seeking to strike, Varun Dhawan has proved his mettle in acting in a considerable short period of time. When he made his debut Karan Johar’s Student Of The Year, Varun seemed to be the perfect fit for romantic comedies. His subsequent two films consolidated that image but the 27-year old actor decided that he had had enough of the jolly good lover boy roles. His latest release Badlapur may not have struck gold at the box-office but his amazing performance in the film has given his competitors a run for their money. NUMEROSCOPE

Star birthdays and the year ahead Ace astro-numerologist Bhavikk Sangghvi predicts what the future holds in store for Aamir Khan and Kangana Ranaut on the eve of their 50th and 29th birthdays.

Kangana Ranaut

Aamir Khan

His numbers

Her numbers

“Born on 14th March, 1965, Aamir is a Number 5 (Mercury) person in numerology also ruled by Number 3 (ruler Jupiter-Pisces) while his destiny number adds up to Number 2 (Moon). Since he is ruled by the number 2, he is automatically ruled by the number 7 (Ketu) too as these two numbers always go hand in hand.

Kangana was born on 23rd March, 1986 which makes her a Number 5 (Mercury) person in numerology. She is an Arian (ruler MarsNumber 9) and her destiny number also adds up to Number 5 which means she is doubly ruled by Mercury. Also she has slight cusp of Pisces (ruler Jupiter -Number 3).

His personality

Her personality

Being a Number 5, it makes Aamir an extremely intelligent and thinking person with a creative bent of mind. His numbers also explain that this trend-setter is quick at grasping things and mastering anything new in his field. The Jupiter effect helps him to convert these ideas in to commercial means and become a wise businessman. The impact of Moon indicates his humane touch and connectivity with the audiences on a spiritual level to an extent where he can gauge the pulse of the audiences. That also sets him apart from the other others actors of his league.

Being ruled by Number 5 twice, Kangana is really good at her communication skills. Her levels of confidence and sharp memory can also be attributed to this factor. Being ruled by Number 9 makes her aggressive and strong minded in whatever she does. This gives her the will and the determination to accomplish things on her own terms.

What the year ahead has in store for him Aamir will now be entering his 51st year which indicates that his golden phase is likely to continue and he will shine further. On the film front, he may not have a release in 2015 but his next project Dangal will once again rewrite box-office history and gain him immense appreciation from all quarters. As for television, he will continue doing brand endorsements while his popular chat show Satyamev Jayate will continue to probe into our conscience in its next season. On the personal front, he will be able to do justice to his family and also find time to choose some right scripts for his future projects. Remedies to beat the blues Wearing a pearl on his little finger in silver on a Monday evening will help Aamir to keep away from mental stress and take all the important decisions of his life in a cool, calm and composed manner. 16 March 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au

What the year ahead has in store for her Kangana will now be entering the 30th year of her life which indicates that she will once again win the hearts of the audience with her stellar performance in both her forthcoming films, Katti Batti and Tanu Weds Manu Returns which will work wonders at the box office. On the personal front too, she may finally come across someone interesting with whom she can look at the possibility of a long-term relationship. However she is likely to face some problems on the health front like loss of sleep, headache and pain in the back or legs due to overwork. Remedies to beat the blues I would recommend Kangana to wear a red coral in gold on her ring finger on a Tuesday morning (one hour after sunrise) to stop any delays in her life (if any) and control blood pressure as her short tempered nature is likely to affect her fitness levels a lot. www.bhavikksangghvi.com

With the kind of skills she plans to acquire, Alia is certain to give the other new generation actresses a run for their money in the future.

Abhishek Bachchan joins Facebook At one time, Abhishek Bachchan was never a great follower of social media and believed that discretion was the best thing. More recently after the success of Happy New Year, Abhishek received an overwhelming response from his fan-base for his performance in the film. TRAVEL

Most people think of two things when they consider visiting Prince Edward Island, Canada’s smallest province. They think of the white sand beaches on the north shore of this picturesque island, which is nestled in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. And they think of Anne of Green Gables, the impish redhaired orphan from the famous novel by Lucy Maud Montgomery. Well, those attractions are certainly worth the visit ... The sandy beaches fringed by grassy dunes stretch for miles along the north shore. For those who wish to put more than a big toe in the water, warm currents from the tranquil Gulf result in temperatures that are noticeably milder than those on the opposite coast. In addition, there’s usually lots of space to spread your towel. As for Anne, well, for those who have read the book and want to see the natural habitat of the strong-willed girl, P.E.I. is certainly the place for you. The Green Gables farmhouse, which Montgomery used as the setting for her beloved story, is designated a National Historic Site and offers tours. In addition,

there is the delightful musical based on the book – also called “Anne of Green Gables” – which is staged every summer to rapturous applause at the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown. However, it is a mistake to believe that’s all the Island offers. One attraction that has developed enormously over the past 40 years is the golfing scene. There are now over 30 courses. While not all are worldclass, a handful compare favorably to any in Canada. Belvedere, just outside of Charlottetown, is one of the Island’s oldest and features manicured fairways shaded by thick stands of mature maple and ash. Brudenell, a championship course in the Eastern end of the province, is a lush expanse of green bounded by rivers and dotted by lakes and ponds. The award-winning Links at Crowbush Cove, which stretches along the north shore, offers spectacular sights and challenging shots. A bonus for the golf vacationer is that most of the courses are within comfortable driving range of one or both urban areas (Charlottetown and Summerside). You can quite easily play one course after

breakfast, another after lunch, and – if you have the stamina – a third round at yet another course after an early supper. However, you may not manage that evening round of golf if you decide to tuck into one of the Island’s famous lobster suppers. Offering generous servings of fresh lobster along with rolls, chowder, and home-made desserts (fruit pies in season), these seafood feasts are memorable and satisfying. To wrap up the perfect day, why not try an evening’s entertainment with a Maritime flavor? A Ceilidh is a traditional Celtic celebration of music and dance. From Spring till Autumn, you’ll find them happening in Church halls and community centers – and a few living rooms – across P.E.I. It’s fun, friendly, and you’re sure to be clapping your hands or tapping your feet before long. There’s so much more than sand and Anne (of Green Gables) available in the long summer on P.E.I. FACE TO FACE

I feel wonderful about having made a mark on my own

I am back

into the unconventional space His last film, Hawaizaada, failed to create a stir at the box-office but actor-singer Ayushmann Khurrana, is not complaining. The actor is now looking forward to his next film, Dum Laga Ke Haisha and his expectations from the film.

FACE TO FACE

It's time to move on and the best part is that public memory is very short-lived

Let’s start with your latest film, Dum Laga Ke Haisha, in which you play a character who is a big fan of singer Kumar Shanu. Are you a fan of the singer in real life too? I am a huge fan of Kumar Shanu. Anyone who has grown up in the nineties has to be a big fan of his singing style. Dum Laga Ke Haisha is set in the same period and my character Prem Kishore runs a music cassette shop and is a huge Kumar Shanu fan. Shanu-da’s voice is the essence of the film. The look you are sporting in the film is completely different from your look in your earlier films? I have a very different look in the film inspired by the stars during that era. For one particular number, I was given three costumes which were inspired by Salman Khan, Govinda and Anil Kapoor. This is also the first time I did not sing a song in my film. Your last release, Hawaizaada got a poor response at the box-office despite the fact that a lot of hard work and imagination went into the making of the film. Did you feel disappointed? As an actor you can only give your best. Beyond that you can do nothing about the success or failure of a film. Thankfully, I am detached about whatever I do in life. I don’t have too many expectations from life, which keeps me happy and grounded. It’s time to move on and the best part is that public memory is very short-lived. Five days after Hawaizaada released, the promos of Dum Laga Ke Haisha came up and people were surprised to see me. So I have moved on too.

Do you still feel like an outsider in the Mumbai film industry? It’s interesting to see the equations in the film industry change every Friday. I think this is an exciting time to be an outsider in Bollywood. I feel wonderful about having made a mark on my own. I am proud of my struggle and all that I’ve achieved so far. The satisfaction one gets when one comes to Mumbai with hopes and aspirations is something that cannot be described. It’s far more gratifying than to have a career handed on a platter. Were you taken aback by the poor response to the film? I was very confident about Hawaaizaada and I felt it was the right time for such a film. I was all the more optimistic because there were several unconventional films like PK and Haidar, which recently made a mark at the box-office.

What next? I am looking forward to Shoojit Sircar’s Agra Ka Dabra. The film was earlier titled Hamara Bajaj and it tells the story of a tourist guide who wants to be a filmy hero. By Subhash K Jha (with inputs from Srabanti Chakravarthy)

You did taste failure with Nautanki Saala and Bewakoofiyan? I don’t deny that Bewakoofiyan was a flop but I don’t consider Nautanki Saala a failure. The producer of the film more than recovered the money on his investment. However I am hoping that the next few releases will make up for everything, starting with Dum Lagake Haisha, which is once again very much an out of the box film. So has the unconventional become conventional for you? I guess so. My earlier two films were in the rom-com space. I started with Vicky Donor and it couldn’t get any more unconventional than that. I am back into the unconventional space.

I was very confident about Hawaaizaada and I felt it was the right time for such a film www.visionasia.com.au | March 2015 23

Bollywood celebrities gear up for

World Cup 2015

It is a well-known fact that India is a cricket-crazy nation and cricket fanatics go out of their way to catch up on the excitement of the game. While a majority of viewers are glued to their television sets during the World Cup, the Bollywood celebrities are not far behind. We caught up with a few stars who are already tuned into the ongoing cricket season.

“I am not a great cricket enthusiast and hardly watch the game but this time I am hoping to watch it. I love Anushka Sharma’s boyfriend and I will cheer for him.”

Kangana Ranaut

“I am cheering for both the Sri Lankan and Indian team. I am from Sri Lanka and love my country but now I have become more of an Indian. I hope both the countries make their way into the finals.”

Jacqueline Fernandez

I am a cricket buff and have been catching up on most of the matches though I am shooting for my next film. My favourite players Yurvraj Singh and Sehwag are not playing but that has not stopped me from enjoying the matches. I hope India walks away with the World Cup.

“I wish the Indian team all the best and I hope Indian wins the World Cup. My favourites in the team are Dhoni and Virat Kohli. I am going to cheer them in my own way.”

Varun Dhawan

Arjun Rampal

I am not a great cricket buff but I am trying to catch up on the cricket excitement whenever it is an India match. With the kind of timings that we as actors keep I don’t know how much I will be able to watch.

I am busy shooting but I am hoping to make a trip to Australia to catch up on the World Cup. I really hope India takes the World Cup.

Ranbir Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor

I have never turned

my back on any genre

His latest release Baby may not have hit the bull’s eye at the box-office but it has garnered rave reviews and appreciation for Akshay Kumar. In a conversation with Subhash K Jha, the action king talks about his experience shooting the film, his take on terrorism and how he manages to find time for his family despite his hectic film schedules.

ENCOUNTER

My adrenaline pumps up when I come across some real life action

All your three releases this year, Baby, Main Gabbar and Brothers, are action-oriented films. Have you made a conscious decision to steer away from comedy, which had become your favourite genre not so long ago? It’s not a deliberate move. I just happen to be doing those films right now. As a matter of fact, I am trying to do justice to some very important projects that are close to my heart. I have never turned my back on any genre. Also my adrenaline pumps when I come across some real life action. I felt this was the best opportunity to give it to my fans. As a matter of fact, I am trying to do justice to some very important projects that are close to my heart. I have never turned my back on any genre. Also my adrenaline pumps when I come across some real life action. I felt this was the best opportunity to give it to my fans. Baby was a very different style of cinema from your recent lot of films. How much did you have to work on your acting style to accommodate the demands of the script? I agree the film was very different in many aspects, but I think people tend to forget the many genres of films I have attempted so far. In the last two years, I have experimented with three serious thrillers, three family comedies, and a spoof and even played God. I was constantly re-inventing myself

and modifying my acting style so it wasn’t as difficult slipping into the role of a secret service agent for director Neeraj Pandey. You seem to be craving to spread your wings? That’s because I am required to be versatile. I do what my directors expect of me. I do as I’m told, after all these years. Acting isn’t something that you work on but perfecting your craft is definitely in your hands. The magic lies in what the director can get out of you, not the other way around. The film also saw you working with a relative newcomer, Tapsee Pannu, unlike the established heroines you have worked with in the past. What was it like to face the camera with a less experienced co-star? One shouldn’t judge a hero or heroine by experience alone. I’ve been blown away with many a first time performer over the

years, so sharing the screen with Tapsee was an equally rewarding experience. She trained well for this film and managed to show a powerful female side in a very male orientated film. If all of us leading men worked with the same talented heroines over and over again, how would our industry ever grow? No-one knows who the next ‘Kareena Kapoor Khan’ or ‘Katrina Kaif’ will be. It’s my duty to give back to this industry what it has given me.

ENCOUNTER

It’s my duty to give back to this industry what it has given me

The shooting of the film took you to various unexplored parts of the world. Which location did you enjoy the most? I think each location in the film was unique to my experience. I fell in love with the people of Nepal, but was wowed with the beauty of the streets in Istanbul, and then I was blown away with the serenity of the Abu Dhabi desert. I enjoyed the journey all the way. Knowing that the film conveys an important message on terrorism, what is your take on the global menace of terrorism? My take on terrorism is as gut-wrenching as it is to everyone else on this planet. When innocent people are killed it breaks my heart, it also breaks homes, cities, the lives of so many people, families and countries. But it’s how we handle it that changes the outcome of any attack. If we refuse to cave in and break down, the heinous, inhuman actions of the terrorists will prove futile. Do you think we can fight terrorism as responsible global citizens? I think this is where the media needs to be careful about sensationalizing terrorism. We shouldn’t give them the time of day or the glory they are so craving for. As much as we need to be informed about what is prevailing in the world, I doubt whether terrorist elements would continue with their barbaric attacks if they were never televised or highlighted in the media. This is something that needs to be thought. Didn’t it occur to you that you were drawing undue attention to terrorism by being in a film like Baby? I don’t deny that but we deliberately portrayed the whole situation to uncover the bravery of men who fought terrorism behind closed doors. These are fighters that are oblivious to the world. In the film, the spotlight is on the silent good guys who deserve all the attention and not the bad guys. 28 March 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au

Let’s talk of your next film, Brothers, which is also your first film with Karan Johar. How was the experience working with him and why did you not explore the idea of doing so earlier? We did not work together in the past because the opportunity never arose. We were both busy with our own productions in own companies. Also, there is a limit to the number of films you can make. We waited patiently for the right script to bring us together. As for the experience of working with Karan, I can only say that it is one hell of a collaboration. Moving away from the action scene, how do you deal with the long periods of shooting outside the country when you can’t meet your wife and children? Whenever I need my family or feel that they are missing me, I fly them down to the destination where I am shooting. We don’t need to suffer; we have the means to ensure that our families are by our sides even when we are in the remotest corners of the world. I’m grateful for this luxury of being able to bring my family close to me whenever I am far away. Luckily I shoot films quickly so I’m never on an outdoor for very long.

You’ve just completed 14 years of a happy and successful married life. What is the magic mantra for keeping a marriage working in a place like showbiz? Marry someone who understands you, your time, job, stress levels and your woes and you’ve pretty much got exactly what it takes to not only have a lasting marriage but also a life of your dreams. Tina and I hailed from different families but our lives were similar. Also we understood each other from day one. That’s how we have avoided arguments and kept the spark alive for so long. We’re similar to a great extent but we are also different in many respects.

B-BUZZ

Aishwarya Rai compliments Akshara Haasan Unlike other newcomers who are shy and uncomfortable facing the media, Akshara Haasan, the youngest daughter of the legendary Kamal Haasan and actress, Sarika, is perfectly in control of herself when it comes to sharing candid moments with the media. The actress, who had an enviable debut with Big B and Dhanush in Shamitabh, was an example of perfect composure when she faced a barrage of questions from the media during the pre-release campaign. The youngster has been blessed with looks from both her parents but she could not contain her excitement when she received a compliment from former beauty queen turned actress, Aishwarya Rai, “I was over the moon when Aishwarya Rai complimented me and spoke about how I resembled her to a great extent. She is so beautiful and being compared to her is like being on the top of the world,” Akshara revealed.

After the bouquets, Shah Rukh had to face the brickbats too When Barrack Hussein Obama incorporated Shah Rukh Khan’s famous dialogue, ‘Senorita, bade bade deshon ... You know what I mean,’ from Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge in his speech while on a three-day visit to India, the nation clapped and Shah Rukh Khan was ecstatic too. The actor even took to Twitter to share his opinion. He wrote “Proud 2 b part of the gender & religion equality speech of Pres. Obama. Sad he couldn’t do the Bhangra... next time Chaiyya Chaiyya for sure.” However the excitement was short-lived when the superstar was pulled up by the ruling state government and the municipal authorities for the illegal parking ramp he had constructed outside his Bandra suburban bungalow. The ramp which SRK used for parking his vanity van was recently demolished by a civic demolition squad after the actor did not respond to earlier notices. The superstar has not commented on the issue and has maintained a dignified silence. www.visionasia.com.au | March 2015 29

BEHIND THE SCENES

I don’t think there was any

corruption

in the Censor Board The Central Board of Film Certification has come under attack, at times for its lenient attitude towards censorship of abusive language, sexual innuendos and violence and at other times its moral policing on what seems to be right or wrong. More recently, the CBFC was in the eye of a storm after its former Chairperson, Leela Sampson resigned mid-way over the clearance given to a film titled, Messenger of God. Subhash K Jha caught up with the new CBFC chairperson, Pahlaj Nihalani, to find out about his plans.

30 March 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au

BEHIND THE SCENES

It is obvious that the outgoing members of the CBFC planned a campaign against the central government in order to malign it

How did you react to the news of taking over from Mrs Leela Sampson? It came as a complete surprise to me. I had no clue I was being considered for the job. I was busy with the wedding of Shatruji’s (actor-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha) son, when I learnt about it. Besides, I had no official intimation from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting. I heard about the appointment through the media. It was only later that I got the official communication. The job comes with a lot of controversy, what with Mrs Leela Samson’s abrupt resignation hovering over your head? But wasn’t her tenure over? I wouldn’t like to comment on her conduct. As far as I am concerned, I’ve never shunned challenges even as a film-maker. What is life without challenges? I’ve always worked for the welfare of the film industry. I see my new responsibility as the CBFC’s chairperson as an extension of the work that I was always doing. Most people who have held the position feel that it is a thankless job? I don’t see the job as being as difficult as it is made out to be. I have my own reservations about the so-called difficulties and problems put forward by the earlier members of the CBFC. Do you think the position of the CBFC chairperson has been politicized? If you ask me, the Censor Board (during Leela Samson’s tenure) didn’t do its job the way they should’ve done it. It was only when their tenure was over that they suddenly woke up to all these corruption charges. It is obvious that the outgoing members of the CBFC planned a campaign against the central government in order to malign it.

Are you saying they lied about political intervention? What were they doing during all these years? Why didn’t they step down in protest against the supposed corruption when they were still in power? By raising a hue and cry when they were on their way out, they did wrong to themselves and to the CBFC. Na kaam achcha hua Na naam achcha hua. In your opinion what should the earlier chairperson have done? From what I have gathered, they did nothing to bridge the gap between the film industry and the censor board in censorship policy and how far it must go. According to you how far must the censor board go? According to me the film industry and the censor board have the same responsibility. They are both supposed to reflect social maladies and ensure that our society is free of undesirable values. If both cinema and the censor board are supposed to uphold the same values then why should they be at loggerheads? There have been a lot of corruption charges against the CBFC? I don’t think there was any corruption in the CBFC. In my long tenure as a producer, I never came across a situation where I had to pay a bribe or offer gifts in order to get my movies cleared. When I was dissatisfied with some censorship decisions about my films, I went to the revising committee and my film was cleared. That apart, there have been several past instances of filmmakers paying to jump the queue to get their censor certificates? I think it was the middlemen who benefited from these. Accountability is a problem. As

the chairperson of the CBFC, I intend to eliminate the presence of all these so-called middle-men, who create a rift between the film industry and the censor board. Right now I am still to find my bearings. Once I settle down in the post, I will take concrete steps to cement relations between the film industry and the censor board. Your closing thoughts? I don’t want to be critical of what the censor board did earlier. I want to start on a clean slate and ensure that a healthy and positive relationship exists between the film industry and the CBFC.

I will take concrete steps to cement relations between the film industry and the censor board www.visionasia.com.au | March 2015 31

A few years back Shashank Vyas was another young guy who landed in Mumbai from Ujjain in search of a career in acting. The actor had never imagined that he would become one of the most sought after television stars in the industry. His share of struggles led him to several production offices after which he landed a small cameo in Shirish Kunder's Tees Maar Khan, followed by the television show, Rishta. com. His identity crisis ended when he landed the lead role in the television serial, Ballika Vadhu, after which he never looked back. Shashank Vyas talks about his success story and what the show means to him.

TELECHAT

I am passionate about dance and I would love to do a dance-based reality show like Jhalak Dikhla Ja

Unlike other television stars, you are known to be fairly grounded despite being one of the most popular faces on the television scene. Have you always been so unassuming? When people tell me that I am down to earth, I attribute it entirely to my upbringing and the way my mother brought me up. My parents always had a balanced approach towards life. There were times when they would reprimand me for my mischievous behavior but we were always taught to give our best to everything we did, without taking undue credit for it. When was the first time in your life that you realised you wanted to become an actor? It wasn’t as if I had an overnight inspiration. I was always good on stage and I had a deep desire to pursue acting. I had set my goals clearly and my parents supported me in my decision. They also told me that I would not get anything on a platter and I would have to work hard to achieve my dreams. I am glad they gave me enough time to excel and prove my talent, though I had a tough time in my initial days. You started out by doing a cameo in Tees Maar Khan. Did you take up the role out of compulsion? Mumbai is a city of dreams but it is also a city which is very tough to survive. In my initial days of struggle, there were days when I hardly had Rs 20 rupees in my pocket. I had to first look for survival. So when I was offered this little role in Tees Maar Khan, I just grabbed the opportunity. Also, I felt it would be a great opportunity to learn about the film industry. Do you think Balika Vadhu has made a difference to your life? I owe my success and my career entirely to this show. The show not only took care of all my needs, it also gave me name and fame. It was this show that led people to recognize my acting talent. I never had the confidence to pull off a character before I played the role of Jaggya. The success of the show has

Working in Balika Vadhu is like having a daily workshop on the sets

also made me work harder. I was a laid back person earlier but when the audiences responded positively to the show, I felt I had a responsibility on my shoulders. I did not want to let my fans down. Considering that the show has been running for six years now, don’t you feel that you have had enough of the show? I firmly believe that working in Balika Vadhu is like having a daily workshop on the sets. I started working with actors like Sulekha Sikri, Anoop Soni, Satyajit Sharma, Smita Bansal and I have learnt from all of them. Right now, there is only me and Sulekha-ji but that hasn’t affected my enthusiasm. You have to keep adjusting to the changing storyline and the emerging characters. How do you manage to cope up with new co-stars everyday with so many actors walking in and out of the show? There have been times when I established a rapport with a particular co-star and he or she left the show. There is no doubt I had so start from scratch to cultivate the same rapport with a new actress. I have shared screen space with nine actresses so far from Pratyusha Banerjee to Sriti Jha and more recently Ayesha Kazi. But I have no problems with the changing scenario. I take it as a challenge. People have never complained about my on screen chemistry with any of my heroines. I am a person who can never have a bad vibes with my co-star. I always have a good relationship off the screen because I believe a good off screen rapport can transform into a good on screen camaraderie.

Unlike most of your contemporaries, you have not been linked to any of your costars so far. Are you a very guarded about your personal life? I believe in cordial relationships with all my co-stars and I have always kept it at that. I have seen that when you start getting closer to people, you end up ruining a good relationship. Apart from that, I am not a guarded person; people who are close to me know that I am quite a talkative and easily approachable person. Why have you not done any reality shows so far? Will we see you doing one this year? So far Balika Vadhu has kept me busy and I don’t intend to leave this show unless I get something very big. I have not really thought about doing a reality show yet. I am passionate about dance and I would love to do a dance-based reality show like Jhalak Dikhla Ja where my fans can see me in a different light. However I am totally averse to doing a show like Bigg Boss, simply because I don’t think I have that kind of talent. How do you see yourself ten years from now? I want to see myself as the top three actors on the Indian scene a few years from now. I dream big so professionally I would rather see myself in a bigger canvas that any other medium. There were a few roles I was offered earlier but I am looking at something more substantial. Let us wait and watch when it happens. By Srabanti Chakravarthy www.visionasia.com.au | March 2015 35

INTERVIEW

After his overwhelming victory on Bigg Boss, Gautam Gulati has emerged as the new heart-throb of television. The show catapulted him to overnight fame making him the most popular Bigg Boss contestant with a record number of followers. In a conversation with Subhash K Jha, the actor talks about his experience on the show, the qualities that made him a winner and how he plans to take his success further.

How did it feel to stand with the trophy of the Bigg Boss winner? Trust me, it was a great feeling. I wanted to see my mom before anyone else after I won the trophy. It was her values that brought me to this position. I am no stranger to popularity so I am aware that I need to handle this new success in my life with a sense of responsibility. I want to do good work and not just become another Bigg Boss winner. Were you anxious about being evicted at any point of time? How sure were you of winning? I was ready to either win or be evicted. Fortunately for me, Bigg Boss loved me so much that he never allowed me to be evicted. It is well-known that everything about every contestant is captured by camera. You cannot hide anything. Your popularity soared to new heights while you were in the Bigg Boss house? After I came out, I learnt that my popularity on the social media had even surpassed the popularity of our honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It was a great feeling. My

colleagues inside the Bigg Boss house didn’t understand my feelings but the whole of India connected to me. I think it was the millions of television viewers who made me a star. To what factor would you attribute your victory over your opponents? How would you describe your experience inside the house? I did go to the Big Boss house as an entertainer but not with the purpose of providing content for TRPs. I am aware that some of the other contestants did strange things on the show to attract attention. There was no double speak or hypocrisy in my attitude. Also I remained cool and composed even under provocation. When the others squabbled, I refused to react and stayed calm. I guess I won because I was myself on the show.

INTERVIEW

Fortunately for me, Bigg Boss loved me so much that he never allowed me to be evicted

Most contestants end up losing their temper and exposing themselves in the Big Boss house. How did you manage to control yourself? I must admit that I made Herculean efforts to control my temper and I succeeded in doing so. Every time I feared losing my temper I turned it into an occasion for mazaaq and masti. I went out of my way to diffuse tension in the house, with Upen, Ali and Karishma and others. If I had lost my cool there would have been no difference between them and me. When one party is upset the other has to be calm. Contrary to your Mr Clean image, you were quite a Casanova with your umpteen flirtations with Diandra and Sonali Raut. Don’t you think it went against your image? I am very clear about my priorities in life. I will only marry the girl that my mother chooses for me. As for what happened inside with Diandra, it was a momentary impulse. How do you expect to react if a girl kisses you? I could not reject her advances. It would have been rude so I kissed her back. I realized that there was a hidden Emraan Hashmi inside me and that part of me got provoked. Whatever I’ve done in my life I’ve done it openly without being apologetic. But that is done with. I don’t want to carry forward that image at all.

38 March 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au

With your ‘Do No Trespass’ sign around your heart, how do you intend to handle your female fans? I am certainly not going to hurt my fans. I’ll find a way of keeping them happy without being untrue to myself. Who are your friends from Bigg Boss? My only friend from Bigg Boss house is Puneet Issar. He is my mentor, guide, friend and father-figure. Puneet-ji’s family wants to adopt me and I am okay with that. I am like his son. What are your plans now? I’ve done an international film called Darpok which had taken me to the red carpet of the Cannes Film Festival. I want to do both Bollywood and international films. Trust me my entry into Bollywood will be as solid as my entry in Bigg Boss. I never thought I’d be presented so well in Bigg Boss. It’s all due to my body language. Now it’s up filmmakers to capture the same body language.

I made Herculean efforts to control my temper and succeeded in doing so

PREVIEWS

Vision Asia previews films to watch out for in the months ahead.

NH10 Produced by Anushka Sharma’s Clean Slate Films in association with Eros International and Phantom Films, NH10 is an edge-of-the-seat and action-packed film starring Anushka Sharma, Neil Bhoopalam and Darshan Kumar in the lead roles. The film tells the story of a young upper middle class couple, Meera and Arjun, who venture out on a weekend holiday. On their way they offer to intervene in what seems like a normal village skirmish not realizing the grave consequences. A thriller at heart, the film essentially tells a story of survival and courage-of how a woman stacked against all odds manages to come out victorious against adverse circumstances. Anushka will be seen in a never-before-seen avatar of an angry young woman. Her terrifying look has been specially worked upon by Romy, a skilled French make-up artist, who has worked in many European film and theatre projects. Directed by Navdeep Singh, the film is slated to release on 6th March, 2015.

BANK CHOR Starring Riteish Deshmukh, Vivek Oberoi and Rhea Chakraborty, Bank Chor is a comic caper that tells the story of three morons trying to rob a bank. The three are inadvertently caught in the crossfire of cops, industrialists and corrupt netas when they choose the worst day possible for the heist when everything goes wrong. Produced by Yash Raj Films, the film has been directed by Bumpy of Luv Ka The End fame. The film was supposed to be the debut vehicle of ace comedian, Kapil Sharma earlier but he was replaced with Riteish Deshmukh later. The film will also have desi rap singer, Baba Sehgal in the role of a hostage stuck inside the bank when the robbery takes place even as he continues to drive the other hostages crazy with his incessant rap. www.visionasia.com.au | March 2015 39

40 March 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au

From Student Of The Year to Ek Villain, Siddharth Malhotra has already made a name for himself in the industry, but this ambitious Delhi boy is still waiting for the one big moment in his life that he can treasure. Vision Asia caught up with the actor in an introspective mood even as he talked about his wish-list, his shortcomings and inadequacies and his equation with various people in the industry.

INTERVIEW

Unlike some other actors who have their production houses to back on, I have to venture out on my own to get work

I think I have substantially realized my dreams in a very short span of time after entering the industry: Like every youngster I had dreamt of buying my own house and having a sports car before the age of 30. I am now ready to buy a house in Bandra, though it is a bit small. I have also got a Harley Davidson which I think is a good compensation for a sports car. After the success of my debut film, Student Of The Year, there was a long gap and there were some anxious moments too. My next release Hasee Toh Phasee was good enough but it was the success of Ek Villain, which once again boosted my confidence. I was hoping to do five films in a short span of time but I managed to deliver three films. But I have no complaints about the way my career is progressing. I think God has been rather kind to me considering that I was a non-descript Delhi boy who made a name in the industry without any contacts. I do feel worried at times about the lack of a support system. If I have to work and establish a relationship here, I have to make my own connections. I do feel insecure at times. Unlike some other actors who have their production houses to back on, I have to venture out on my own to get work and find out how production houses work. Fortunately for me, Karan Johar is a big help and a mentor in such times. Karan is not just a mentor for me-Alia and Varun also look up to him for support. We all meet him together and tell him what we are doing. It’s about how to go about searching for a film and getting work. So far I have been fairly lucky and got work on my own. There is also Reshma Shetty who is a big support.

I have a very different equation with director Karan Malhotra, with whom I earlier worked as an assistant director. We have done so many films and worked together. He knows me personally as a friend. When he directed me in Brothers, he was a different person altogether. He was very sure of what he wanted and would not compromise when it came to his scenes. At one time Karan used to stop me from going to the gym when I assisted him. Now he pushes me into the gym because he wants me to live up to the character in the film. He is someone whom I can count upon when I am stuck in a scene. He makes sure that I deliver the shot without any hiccups.

It was Akshay Kumar who taught me the art of relaxing while doing intense and action-packed scenes in a film. I remember how I and Akshay shared some of the best times during the shooting of Brothers. While Akshay had to lose weight, I had to bulk up and put on 8-10 kilos. I had to train in the gym and also train in mixed martial arts for six months. I play Akshay’s younger brother in the film and ironically he was like an elder brother to me, who taught me how to handle my work and stay cool in demanding situations. Akshay is a bundle of energy and hats off to him for making the whole shoot a fun-filled experience. We bonded on various Punjabi jokes too.

INTERVIEW

After the release of Ek Villain, my fans started addressing me as ‘Aye Villain’ and I found it really exciting

I have a great bonding with a majority of the new generation stars including Varun, Parineeti, Shraddha and Alia. We all belong to the same age group and spend a lot of time together. We are like school children eternally talking about each other. We however make it a point not to compare each other’s work. We are all secure in our own space and we end up having fun with each other. I feel better when people appreciate my performance more than my looks. It gives me a different high. After the release of Ek Villain, my fans started addressing me as ‘Aye Villain’ and I found it really exciting. On the other hand, titles on fitness and sexy are a bit of a pressure since you have to keep looking good and be at your best. Sometimes I wonder what will happen if I stop working out and gain weight. It is very flattering when people praise you but it’s not all about looks. People look at your personality on the whole. During the Vogue beauty awards, I was accorded the distinction of being the ‘Most Beautiful Man’. I was rather amused since I had never heard of the term before. I have come across many enthusiastic female fans but there is one girl who follows me on Twitter and I find her very intriguing. She even keeps a tab on what I am doing and where I am shooting. She makes it a point to drop by on the sets in her car with flowers and gifts. When I hug her every time, she has tears in her eyes. I do feel sorry at times when I see her crying for me. There was another girl who embroidered my 42 March 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au

name on a handkerchief and presented it to me. Now I have made a box where I store all these gifts. Fortunately no one sends me letters written in blood. May be those were reserved only for Rajesh Khanna-the all-time superstar. Besides, girls are more sensible now. One of my New Year resolutions is to find a suitable girl for myself. Contrary to reports that I am dating Alia, I am single and ready to mingle. Like I said earlier, we are all great friends and likeminded guys. My mother feels I have grown a year older and it is time I found a nice partner.

It was Akshay Kumar who taught me the art of relaxing while doing intense and actionpacked scenes in a film

Film fraternity endorses Deepika-Ranveer relationship While the controversy over the AIB roast continues to generate exciting debates among celebrities, it has also sparked off new speculation about the sparkling chemistry between Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone. Sources present say that Deepika was present at the show to cheer Ranveer Singh, even as he sportingly accepted all the unflattering digs made at him. Moreover every time Deepika cheered, Ranveer expressed his love for her in full public view. It was the first time the impulsive actor publicly confessed his love for her and uttered the three magical words, ‘I love you’. Moments later, it was Arjun Rampal who called Deepika on stage and referred to her as bhabhi (sister-in-law) thus endorsing the relationship between Ranveer and Deepika. On her part, Deepika responded with a flying kiss. It all goes to say that the film fraternity has already accepted Deepika and Ranveer’s relationship which is no longer a secret.

Vidya Balan will take the audiences by storm with her next performance It has been some time since Vidya Balan is in the news. The actress who was once hailed by filmmakers as the only actress, who could carry a film on her shoulders, has been lying low for a while now. However the producers of Vidya’s forthcoming film, Hamaari Adhuri Kahani, insist that the actress is likely to come back with a vengeance when the film releases this year in mid-2015. Apparently, Vidya has given the performance of a lifetime in the romantic drama written by Mahesh Bhatt, based on the love story of his father and his stepmother. In a recent media interaction, the producer Mukesh Bhatt recently stated that Vidya was sure to win the National Award for her mind-blowing performance in the film. In the film, Vidya will be seen essaying the role of a woman trapped in a loveless marriage with Emraan Hashmi playing her love interest and Rajkummar Rao in the role of her husband. The Vidya- Emraan pairing did not work in Ghanchakkar, but going by reports, this film will be something to watch out for simply for Vidya’s performance. www.visionasia.com.au | March 2015 43

The roast that backfired on

The controversy surrounding the AIB Knockout comedy refuses to die down. While the matter is now in court, the show has generated a heated debate in the celebrity circuit on roasts and adult stand-up comedy acts and what is permissible and offensive in social norms in India.

A month after its release on YouTube on January 28, 2015, the AIB Knockout comedy show, continues to be in the eye of a storm. While the makers of the show withdrew it officially from the site, political parties have been crying foul over the episode. For those who are not aware, AIB (All India Bakchod) is one of India’s premiere comedy groups which took the initiative of pioneering the stand-up comedy act. The show has been inspired by a 1949 American comedy ‘Tradition’, where comedians and actors crack jokes at the guest’s expense with abusive and foul language. Back in the 1950’s the show was said to be good natured but today the roasts have progressed to being very offensive and exaggerated.

If you want to make people laugh you can do it by using good language. I was deeply disappointed by what I heard. Aamir Khan 44 March 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au

In this case, the roasters were the AIB members- Tanmay Bhat, Gursimran Khamba, Rohan Joshi and Ashish Shakya, besides television host Raghu Ram, film critic Rajeev Masand and comedians Aditi Mittal and Abish Matthew. The ones at the receiving end were actors Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, who had to smile away and take all the jokes in the right spirit, ranging from their sex lives to digs at their weaknesses and their worst career moments. The roast master was

Karan Johar, who did not spare the two actors and also the celebrities sitting in the audiences including Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt and Sonakshi Sinha. The show which was held at Worli in Mumbai, in December 2014 before a 4000 strong crowd had the best of celebrity names among them being Boney Kapoor, Sanjay Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Soni Razdan and Karan Johar’s mother, Hiroo Johar who guffawed with glee at every comment passed on the stage.

The way I look at it, I think it was in a good humour. Anushka Sharma

The repercussions began to be felt when the show was release on You Tube and a debate ensued on the language used in the show. The Maharashtra Minister for Cultural Affairs subsequently ordered a probe into the show. The Minister also inquired whether AIB had taken official permission for the show. While the show organisers and participants maintained a discreet silence following the controversy, a majority of Bollywood personalities including Anushka Sharma, Twinkle Khanna and Pooja Bhatt, have extended their support for the show and its participants. At the launch of her upcoming film Anushka Sharma said “The way I look at it, I think it was in a good humour, not meant to be taken very seriously. This is my opinion and someone else may have a different opinion about it, and that is the beauty of living in a democratic set-up.” However Anushka’s PK co-star Aamir Khan did not share the same opinion. Aamir admitted that he had not seen the roast and only heard about it. He got to know of it from Karan Johar and Arjun Kapoor who narrated the whole episode to him, “They told me about the dialogues and the content and I was deeply disappointed after what I heard. I was not impressed by the bad language. If you want to make people laugh you can do it by using good language. We have to understand that we all have a certain responsibility. I also felt that the show was violent-not in terms of physicality but verbal and emotional. When you insult someone you perpetuate violence. I am sure a lot of young people have liked it but we are allowed to have different opinions but I have not liked it.”

About AIB All India Bakchod usually abbreviated and referred to as the AIB is an Indian comedy group. The group maintains a YouTube channel that shows their comedy sketches and parodies on topics like politics and the Indian film industry, and much of their reputation was initiated through their online presence. Initially, the group produced podcasts prior to using YouTube in 2013 as a means to share their comedic work.

Meanwhile a division bench of the Bombay high court restrained the police from taking any coercive steps against four co-founders of AIB until the next hearing on March 16 in an alleged obscenity case registered by the Pune police. www.visionasia.com.au | March 2015 45

I am a teetotaler. I don’t smoke or drink that is why my energy never wanes

His initiation into sports and fitness Gurmeet Choudhary has never skipped his exercise regimen for the past many years, irrespective of his engagements. The actor says that there are no compromises as far as fitness is concerned, “A bout of exercise is the best tonic for health. It rejuvenates your body and also keeps your mind strong. Besides clothes compliment you only when you have a fit body,” Gurmeet reveals. According to Gurmeet, the fitness mantra was instilled in his life right from his early childhood days, “Apart from martial arts, I was into sports from my school days. As my father was in the Army we kept shuttling from one city to another but I never allowed it to come in the way of sports. I was actively into hockey, volleyball and soccer.” Among other things, Gurmeet is a black belt in Martial Arts and makes it a point to practice it every day, “It is a part of my life and one thing I never miss.” The actor admits that he was initiated into the art at a very early age, “I was a great fan of Bruce Lee in my childhood days so my father suggested that I train in martial arts. It later became one of my key to concentration and fitness.” His daily exercise routine Besides his martial arts routine, Gurmeet has chalked out a daily workout regimen to strengthen his core muscles, “I work out every alternate day. If it’s weight training one day the next day I go for a jog and the next I do kick- boxing the following day. I begin my exercise schedule with stretching exercises, after which I work on strengthening various parts of the body. “I work on my triceps one day and the next day I work on my chest and shoulders, the third day I work on my legs. I do three sets of repetitions for each part of the body. More than weights I prefer free style exercises like squats, lateral squats and lunges,” he reveals.

He wraps up his dinner by 8 p.m. every day. “I stick to a light dinner of boiled vegetables, grilled fish or chicken or chicken stew,” he says. Gurmeet reveals that he was a strict vegetarian once upon a time but his dietary habits underwent a change after he met his wife, Debina, “Debina loves fish and I started enjoying it too. After meeting her, I started eating a lot of non vegetarian food,” he smiles.

His word of advice for youngsters Among his many rules of fitness is a total abstinence from drinks and cigarettes, “I am a teetotaler. I don’t smoke or drink that is why my energy never wanes. I am always active” he says.

The youngster has a word of advice for all the youngsters, who depend on high energy drugs and steroids for building muscles, “People think that when you consume drugs they can make you energetic but this is all momentary. A friend of mine was into drugs. He was playing the main lead in a number of serials with big channels. He started becoming finicky and later lost a lot of work. He wanted to quit the habit but had a tough time getting rid of it.” According to the actor, the right diet, exercise and the right attitude towards life, all play a significant role in health and fitness, “Health and fitness can go a long way in enhancing your prospects of success. Kangana Ranaut shuns awards in true Aamir Khan Style She has no doubt acquired the distinction of being the Queen of the marquee after her performance in Queen but Kangana Ranaut does not seem to be excited by the awards and the accolades that have been showered on her. While her other contemporaries do not skip award functions, the actress has been maintaining a conspicuous absence from award dos and shunning away from the limelight. Reports suggest that Kangana recently turned down an award at an international ceremony, besides several other award functions, where she was to be felicitated for her performance in Queen. The actress had recently stated in an interview that she did not believe in awards and even the big money did not inspire her to attend award ceremonies. She had also stated that her decision was inspired by Aamir Khan, who was the first star to shun all award ceremonies. It is a known fact that Aamir Khan has refrained from participating in awards shows for several years now. Meanwhile, Priyanka Chopra who was a close contender to Kangana in many of the award shows for her performance in Mary Kom recently expressed support for the actress, “I appreciate Kangana for taking a stand. Many of us in the industry think about it but only a few can take a stand of not attending award functions. Also my favourite film this year was Queen apart from Mary Kom,” Priyanka stated in an interview.

Arjun Rampal is happy playing the perfect father Arjun Rampal is in a comfortable space both in his professional and personal life. The actor, who was once dismissed off as a stiff model-turned-actor with little acting skills, has finally come of age with some really good roles in his kitty. His recent performance in Roy was also appreciated by the audiences. While he is busy experimenting with diverse roles, Arjun is also playing the mentor to his two grown-up daughters who have started following their father’s passion for acting. “They are already tuned into acting. They enjoy dancing, participate in plays and feel upset if they get small scenes. I tease them and tell them to stretch their dialogue and use pauses,” Arjun recently revealed. The actor says that he loves to go on a holiday with them, “All they need is love and friendship. When they shop on internet and need the credit card they wrap me round their little finger. But that’s okay because sometimes you have to pamper them,” he adds. 64 March 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au
