DOK Leipzig setzt sich gemäß seiner Tradition für die Erhaltung des Friedens und die Würde des Menschen ein. Dies tun wir in erster Linie mit unserem Filmprogramm, das hilft, ein tieferes Verständnis von der Welt zu gewinnen und Vorurteile abzubauen, das Medienkompetenz und Demokratiefähigkeit junger Menschen befördert und die Filmkultur wie auch den Medienstandort nachhaltig pflegt. Aber wir wollen uns darüber hinaus engagieren und Initiativen helfen, die für ähnliche Ziele einstehen. Deshalb bietet DOK Leipzig Unicef und Refugees United 2009 eine Plattform. Im letzten Jahr hat DOK Leipzig zwei Ausschreibungen für künstlerisch und inhaltlich außergewöhnliche Dokumentarfilmprojekte gestartet: „Mein Leben in Sicherheit“ mit 3sat und „Breathless – Dominance of the Moment“ mit dem Prager Institute of Documentary Film und der Bundeskulturstiftung im Rahmen von ZIPP – deutsch-tschechische Kulturprojekte.Herausgekommen sind acht ganz besondere Dokumentarfilme, deren Welturaufführung Sie in dieser Woche miterleben können. Jetzt wünsche ich Ihnen unvergessliche Kinoerlebnisse, spannende Begegnungen mit unseren internationalen Gästen und viel Spaß auf Ihrer Entdeckungsreise durch das Programm von DOK Leipzig.

Without your support, DOK Leipzig would not be back in the ranks of the most important international documentary and animated film festivals. My special thanks go to the city of Leipzig, the State of Saxony, the Federal Government Commissioner for and the MEDIA programme of the European Union for increasing their funding. DOK Leipzig follows its tradition of working for the preservation of peace and human dignity. We do this first and foremost with our film programme, which helps us gain a deeper understanding of the world and combats prejudice. It promotes young people’s media competence and their capacity for democracy, nourishes cinematic culture as well as the media location of Leipzig. But we want to engage ourselves beyond that and help initiatives that have similar goals. That is why DOK Leipzig 2009 is offering a platform to UNICEF and Refugees United. Last year, DOK Leipzig launched two calls for documentaries distinguished by their artistic quality and unusual content: “My Life in a Safe Place” in co-operation with 3sat and “Breathless – Dominance of the Moment” in co-operation with the Prague Institute of Documentary Film and the German Federal Cultural Foundation as part of ZIPP – German-Czech Cultural Projects. The results are eight very special documentaries whose world premieres you can attend this week. I now wish you an unforgettable cinematic experience, exciting encounters with our international guests and a lot of enjoyment as you embark on your journey of discovery through this year’s DOK Leipzig.
