Highlights from the Arabic Typography Contest 46 participants of 18 different nationalities submitted 73 designs. The participants came from all around the world including: • 14 from the Middle East • 13 from Europe • 12 from North Africa More than 2,400 votes were recorded during the two week public voting period. Alia Bin Drai and Mariam Al Mazroui Alia Bin Drai and Mariam Al Mazroui both Emaratis, graduated from Zayed University with their degree in Graphic Design. Both have major interests in art and fashion. Alia and Mariam have created their own fashion line for women called Garmoosha. What is Garmoosha? Alia and Mariam have been inspired by falcons and named their line after a specific breed of falcons called ‘Garmoosha’. The Garmoosha collection is inspired by Emirati heritage and contemporary culture. Inspired by the ‘Talli’ a traditional ribbon used in women’s dresses, we have brought it back with an innovative touch within our creations. Our collection is exclusive one-off pieces of fashion wear from casual to evening dresses and much more depending on each season’ collection. Garmoosha is a reflection of the UAE showcasing the modernity of the city while maintaining the heritage and cultural roots. The line has been existing since the beginning of 2009 and since then we have been showcasing our creations in public and private spaces. At the end of 2009 Garmoosha received the New Arab Talent Of The Year For The Arab Women Of The Year Award 2009 for l’Official Magazine How did Garmoosha become apart of the Adobe event? Adobe were looking for a young Emirati fashion designers to give them an opportunity to showcase their creations. Through friends and family we heard they wanted to have us as a part of their event and we were willing to participate and create a collection that was designed to suit their event and at the same time use this opportunity as an exposure for our line.
