Annual Speech Day 2020

School Report 2019-2020 Ms LEUNG Yvetta Ruth Our guest-of-honour, Professor YUEN Kwok Yung, GBS, SBS, JP, distinguished guests, parents, teachers, students, ladies and gentlemen, Good afternoon and welcome to our school’s Annual Speech Day. Today, we are most honoured to have our old boy, Professor YUEN Kwok Yung, one of the most eminent microbiologists in the medical field, here with us. He will address the gathering and present prizes to our students, prize-winners and graduates. Professor YUEN is a distinctive microbiologist, surgeon and physician. He graduated from Doctor of Medicine of HKU. Due to his expertise in the area of emerging infectious diseases, he is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (Basic Medicine), and the Chinese Academy of Medical Science, and Fellows of Royal Colleges of Pathologist, Surgeons and Physicians of the United Kingdom. Professor YUEN played a key role in the discovery of the SARS coronavirus during the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome in 2003, thus leading to measures that were crucial to containing the outbreak of this disease. He has also led his team in the discovery of other disease agents, including the novel Human Coronavirus HKU1, the bat SARS coronavirus, bat coronavirus HKU2 to 13, and many other bacteria, fungi and parasites named after Hong Kong or China. Due to his outstanding achievements and contributions, Professor YUEN was awarded Silver Bauhinia Star in 2004 and Gold Bauhinia Star in 2018. Professor YUEN’s prominent role in science and medicine is manifested by the fact that he is one of the top 1% researchers in the world, as ranked by the Essential Science Indicator (ISI web). We deeply appreciate that despite Professor YUEN’s extremely tight schedule, he has spared the time to be with us today. I hope that you will join me in giving him a warm welcome back to his alma mater. Now on behalf of my colleagues and staff members of Queen’s College may I present to you the school report for the school year 2019-20: We began our school year with an enrolment of 823 students in 24 classes. Out of

Annual Speech Day 2020

School Report 2019-2020 90 members of staff, 57 were teaching personnel. To provide quality support to our students, throughout the year, our teaching staff have been attending talks, seminars and workshops on school administration, curriculum development, e-learning, STEM education, teaching pedagogy and student development.

Students’ Talents and Achievements Our conviction in the value of taking a holistic approach to nurture our students is manifested in our school’s Major Concerns. Academically, we strive to enrich and consolidate students’ knowledge through experiential learning, and various e-learning tools and platforms. In January, the COVID-19 pandemic caught us by surprise, depriving our S6 students of the chance to complete their mock examination and resulting in a trying postponement of the HKDSE. Despite the immense pressure brought by the uncertainties, our boys demonstrated great perseverance and diligence. They exerted themselves and continued to uphold the tradition of academic excellence at Queen’s College by achieving outstanding results in the 2020 Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination. With 130 students at Queen’s College sitting the HKDSE Examination in 2020, 98 Level 5**s, 166 Level 5*s, and 178 Level 5s were obtained. With these results, many of our students were given offers of highly competitive courses by prestigious institutions locally and overseas such as The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, The University of Cambridge, The University College London, The London School of Economics and Political Science, The University of Toronto, The Tsinghua University and The Peking University and among whom eight received offers to study medicine at The University of Hong Kong and seven to study Medicine Programme (MBChB & MBChB Global Physician-Leadership Stream) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. NG Ho-yu (6D) obtained Level 5** in 7 subjects, NG Ho-wang (6C) obtained Level 5** in 6 subjects and SO Long-ting (6B), YUEN Wai-ching (6C) and CHOI Chin-long (6C) obtained Level 5** in 5 subjects. Various external scholarships were awarded to our top scorers. Ng Ho-yu (6D) was honoured as the President’s Scholar by the University of Hong Kong, which is the highest honour awarded to incoming secondary school students in 2020. LAU Hei-long Brighton (6C) was honoured to receive an offer of a Prince Philip Scholarship in order to study Human, Social and Political Sciences at

Annual Speech Day 2020

School Report 2019-2020 The University of Cambridge. CHOI Chin-long (6C) was awarded Medical Faculty Springboard Scholarships offered by the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine (HKU). Queen’s College now holds the distinction of being the only secondary school in Hong Kong at which one or more students have been awarded seven 5** grades in the nine consecutive years since the introduction of the HKDSE Examination. We are extremely proud of our teachers and students for their unremitting efforts in the pursuit of academic excellence. In fact, our students demonstrate a diversity of talents. Aiming at fully exploring and developing the potential of gifted students, the Support for Gifted Students Team provided students with opportunities to stretch their abilities in various areas and at different levels. In the regular classroom, our students applied the concept of selfdirected learning and differentiated learning strategies to develop their high order thinking skills. Not only did students develop their creativity, but they also applied their knowledge in their daily lives. Moreover, the team organized various training programmes including QC Mathematics Olympiad and QC Physics Olympiad. In addition, gifted students were invited to receive training to explore their thinking skills and creativity. Our school sought resources and support from local tertiary institutes, which provided regular programmes to our students. Furthermore, our students were encouraged to participate in competitions that could enhance their academic knowledge and practical skills. In September, our students joined the International Junior Science Olympiad 2020—Hong Kong Screening test, in which CHAN Chi-him (3C) and YANG Hansen Raphael (3C) obtained First Class Honour and LEUNG Yan-chak (3B) obtained Second Class Honour. In the International Mathematical Olympiad Preliminary Selection Contest, SEE Ka-wun (4D) and CHAN Hin-yin(5B) obtained Silver award, while TONG Shek-yuen (4A), CHEUNG Man-yin (4D) and SIU Kwan-yiu (5B) obtained Bronze award. In Hua Xia Cup Mathematical Olympiad Contest 2020 (Hong Kong) Preliminary Round, among the nine junior form students joining the contest, seven of them obtained First Class Honour and two obtained Second Class Honour. Following the current trend of STEM Education, our school actively explores opportunities for students by strategically adhering STEM Education to the 3-tiered model of gifted education. A school-based curriculum which initiated ‘Creative Science’ and ‘Coding in Computer Science’ continued to be adopted in Integrated Science, and Computer Literacy / Information and Communication Technology respectively to foster creativity, problem solving and collaboration of students. Other pull-out programs such as 3D Printer Application Workshop were organized to equip students with the essential knowledge and skills for further advancement in various STEM applications. Through

8

Annual Speech Day 2020

School Report 2019-2020 various STEM programs and competitions, students’ creativity and enthusiasm were also ignited. The school will continue our effort to explore opportunities and partnerships with our old boys, international academics and local tertiary institutions to address students’ needs and unleash their potential. Last year, despite the unprecedented challenges and disruption brought by social unrest and the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to the cancellation of many of the school events and inter-school competitions, our boys took great pains to perform their best in the events held. Our sports teams demonstrated perseverance and sportsmanship among our students in various competitions. For the Aquatic Team, CHEUNG Ting-yue (6D) won the 1st Runner-up in the 50m and 100m backstroke. LOK Yin-chun (4D) won the 2nd Runnerup in the 100m backstroke and 200m Individual Medley. Our A-grade team also obtained the 1st Runner-up in the 4x50m freestyle relay. YAN Masa Hiko (1B) achieved the 7th place in the boys’ single competition at the All Hong Kong Schools Jing Ying Table Tennis Tournament. Also, WONG Wai-ching (6A) and HON Ho-tung (5D) achieved the 5th-8th place in boys’ double competition at the All Hong Kong Schools Jing Ying Badminton Tournament. Our music teams also demonstrated great diligence in various events. In the sole competition that our school participated in, our Wind Band was awarded a Silver Certificate in the LCSD Hong Kong Youth Music Interflows in December. Prior to the suspension of schools in January, the annual music camp was held for our Wind Band and String Orchestra for 3 days in PLK Jockey Club Pak Tam Chung Holiday Camp, yielding significant improvements and closer bonding from both teams. In November, our Male Voice Choir was invited by the Ponte Singers to join the Ode To Freedom concert, singing the Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Fall of Berlin Wall. Despite the cancellation of the concert due to school suspension, our choir members had gained fruitful experience from the numerous rehearsals with their Artistic Director, Mr. Stephen LAM Lik-hin. Our music teams were also wellprepared for the 72nd Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, but regrettably, we were not able to showcase our results of hard work during the time of the pandemic. Some of our music teams still tried to carry out online rehearsals during the difficult time and their efforts are much appreciated. It was not an easy year for the music development of QC, but we hope to slowly recover along with the whole society and bounce back with the same glorious sound as before.

Annual Speech Day 2020

School Report 2019-2020 Whole Person Development We believe it is of equal importance to foster students’ whole person development and instil in them proper values. Therefore, we also incorporate students’ personal growth into our Major Concerns. Through the concerted efforts of various school teams, we endeavour to empower students with good qualities of empathy, respect and commitment to face the challenges ahead. The Counselling Team has conducted a wide range of activities. The orientation activities and Orienteering Competition have helped S1 students adapt to the new environment and explore their own talents. The Adventure-ship Partnership Program and Training on Mental Health First Aid and Emotion Management have helped senior form students nurture gratitude, self-discipline and positive attitude when facing adversity, preparing them for future leadership roles. Other programs such as S1 Eldpathy, school-based Life-wide Learning Periods and sharing at assemblies have also been effective in nurturing respectful and responsible manners as well as other positive beliefs. To broaden our students’ horizons, enhance their understanding of our motherland and nurture their sense of global citizenship, the Moral and Civic Education Team has held a series of activities including, Moral Education Folder Designing Competition, Gratitude Event Book, Top-Ten News survey, and Inter-class News and Basic Law Competitions. The Career and Life Planning Team (CLP) implemented a comprehensive programme, which aimed to facilitate students' career and life planning through developing their knowledge, skills and attitudes related to further education and career prospects. A whole-person approach, which emphasizes perseverance, risk taking and teamwork, was adopted to encourage our students to embrace future challenges. Our Old Boys’ Association wholeheartedly supported our students through a large-scale sharing and interview practice programme, in which old boys of various generations came to meet their younger brothers and share with them their experiences in handling public examinations, choosing university programmes and navigating interviews. They also enlightened our students about their career and life planning through mentorship and internship programmes. Two online talks were organized. The first one was mainly for S5 parents and students in order to give them a better understanding of JUPAS operation. The other one was arranged for those who were interested in overseas education. Upon the release of the HKDSE results, online JUPAS counselling was also

10

Annual Speech Day 2020

School Report 2019-2020 arranged for S6 students. In addition, the CLP team made good use of the Life-wide Learning periods to organize admission talks and workshops on further education and career development. The Health and Sex Education Team has been implementing a Healthy School Programme since 2011 in order to nurture students’ healthy habits, positive attitude towards life, and resistance to temptations. Apart from the school-based programmes, the Team continued to work with the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals CROSS Centre in 2020-21 to arrange activities financed by the Beat Drugs Fund to deliver anti-drug messages. To enhance students’ environmental awareness, a number of activities were held. They include a visit to the Hong Kong Electric Centre, a solar energy robot making workshop, online promotion for red packets recycling, No Air-conditioner Night, Earth Hour 2020, sharing in morning assemblies, beach cleaning and online training workshops and seminars. Also, our school joined the Student Environmental Protection Ambassador Scheme 2019-2020 organized by the Education Bureau and the Environmental Protection Department, in which 21 Student Environmental Protection Ambassadors won Merit Awards, 20 students were awarded ‘Basic Environmental Badge’ and 16 students were awarded ‘Specific Environmental Badge’. Three students from S4 and S5 were granted the ‘Outstanding Student Environmental Protection Ambassadors Awards’, earning Gold and Silver Prizes. We also received great support from parents. Over 84% and 85% of our students’ families agreed to join the ‘No Air Conditioner Night’ and ‘Earth Hour 2020’ respectively. In addition, our uniform groups, such as the Scouts, the Sea Cadets Corps, the Youth Red Cross and the Road Safety Patrol, our eight school houses and 50 interest clubs encourage our students to develop their interests and sense of belonging. Inter-house competitions allowed students to unleash their talents as well as fostered brotherhood. Through different activities, students augmented their communication, organization, problem-solving and critical thinking skills for future challenges. We also endeavor to connect with our community. To promote social awareness and volunteer services, our school coordinated with Wan Chai Methodist Centre for the Seniors to organize an Elder Academy, aiming to promote intergenerational harmony between the elderly and youngsters. A wooden plane making course in which our student instructors taught the elderly to make wooden planes which could fly for a distance of 30 meters was organized. Moreover, our student instructors taught the elderly to write computer programmes to make mBot car dancing and singing songs

Annual Speech Day 2020

School Report 2019-2020 in an Elementary mBot Programming Course. Both student helpers and the elderly enjoyed the workshop a lot. Our school also helped students to develop positive values and encouraged them to participate in charity events actively. With the support of parents and students, our school raised $81465.6 in Dress Casual Day. In addition, our school encouraged students to use their talents to serve the community. Due to the active participation of our students in serving the community, 112 students obtained the Gold Award, Silver Award and Bronze Award respectively, and our school obtained the Gold Award in the Hong Kong Volunteer Service Award Scheme organized by the Social Welfare Department. Our school also received the Award of 10,000 Hours for Volunteer Service in the same scheme in recognition of our students’ wholehearted contributions to the community. The school has also been striving to foster our students’ global perspectives through exchange tours and programmes. Last year, we conducted the exchange programme with our sister school in South Korea, Ulsan Meister High School. We are pleased that our students could experience a different culture and establish bonding with students from other schools outside Hong Kong. Our students had an extraordinary experience last year. The long school suspension caused disruption to the teaching and learning routines. However, looking on the bright side, we saw many of our boys ponder on their learning habits and styles. This trying period did trigger their reflection, leading them to realize the importance of selfdiscipline and perseverance. They have also learnt to cherish the opportunity of learning at school. We hope this awareness will help our students sail through the unforeseeable challenges ahead.

Acknowledgments On behalf of all the staff and students of Queen’s College, I would like to thank the various stakeholders of our Queen’s College family. We are grateful to the members of the School Management Committee for their valuable advice and tremendous support. We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to the Queen’s College ParentsTeachers’ Association and the Queen’s College Old Boys’ Association – especially the committee members of these organizations, who have dedicated so much of their time and energy to organizing activities and providing assistance to the school. The success of Queen’s College is made possible only through the concerted efforts of all stakeholders and the effective leadership that the school has long been blessed

String Orchestra Performance Serenade for Strings in C major Op. 48 I. Pezzo in forma di sonatina

Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840 – 1893)

Tchaikovsky, a Russian composer in the romantic period, composed this Serenade for Strings in C major Op. 48 in 1880. The first movement of the piece will be performed. Tchaikovsky described this movement as his homage to Mozart, while this classically oriented movement is in the style of a sonatina, where the development section is left out from a sonata form, as the movement named by the composer. The movement starts with a grand and rich chorale as the introduction, followed by the first theme which features a smooth moving passage with various accompaniment patterns. Having a contrasting articulation and timbre, the second theme consists of staccato running notes where parts interact with one another to shape the brisk melodic line. Then, the whole section is repeated with variations and the opening chorale beautifully returns as a coda, making this movement symmetrical. Tchaikovsky fuses his own idea with classical music style in this masterpiece, showing his irreplaceable melody-writing ability. Considered as one of the best among strings repertoire, it plays an important role in string compositions, as well as serenades. Concertmaster: Assistant Concertmaster: Principals:

2. From the proud city and from the lone valley, From the rich districts of Kwang-Tung we come. Hakka and Cantonese round thee we rally, Far from our kindred in thee we find home. Sternly we strive in our sports and our studies, For the race goes to the wise and the strong, Moulding our manhood, our mind and our bodies, QCs and O QCs join in the song. 3. Time speeds along. Soon our schooldays are ended. Comes the sad hour when from thee we must part! Thee who so kindly and skillfully blended Lore of the Orient with Western art. We will not falter nor fearfully wonder, Nutured by thee we feel valiant and strong. Sons of Cathay, raise your voice in thunder, QCs and O QCs join in the song. -2-
