Welcome to Lynchburg’s “festival” of fun and fitness! On behalf of the Lynchburg Road Runners and our organizing committees, we are so honored that you have chosen to celebrate with us.

We’re excited you’ve decided to come to race with us.

This annual festival of racing exemplifies our Central Virginia community spirit: gracious, confident, brimming with optimism. For 43 years, racers have been coming here to test themselves against one of the finest courses road racing has to offer – you will not be disappointed.

It ain’t always easy: in life, in business or in racing. The literal and figurative hills are long and sometimes steep.

Circumstances rattle our commitment and try our souls.

But, in the end, optimism and perseverance take us through to the finish.

The Genworth Virginia 10 Miler is a Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) National Championship Event. Since 1958, the RRCA has awarded championship events through a competitive bidding process at the National, Regional, and State level to RRCA member clubs and events to promote the sport of distance running. The RRCA Championship Event Series is the largest grassroots organized running series in the U.S., attracting over 320,000 runners each year.

The goal of the RRCA Championship Event Series is to shine a spotlight on well-run events and to award top performing runners.

The Virginia 4-Mile Walk is characterized by its passionate and energetic participants each year. We have been overjoyed as the popularity of this event has increased each year since its inauguration in 2010.

Since 2001, these races have been the perfect opportunity for the whole family to be involved on race weekend. The joy and excitement of each young runner during the ¼, ½ and 1-mile runs are truly an inspiration.

The historic Genworth Virginia 10 Miler celebrates its 44th anniversary on Saturday, September 23, 2017. Our community traditionally hosts participants from more than 6 countries and 30 states. Our weekend of events includes the 10-mile run, 10-mile relay, 4-mile run, 4-mile walk, and Amazing Mile Children's Run. We have had the privilege of hosting many elite runners over the years, including running legends Bill Rogers, Frank Shorter, Dick Beardsley, Rod Dixon, and Joan Benoit Samuelson.

PACKET PICKUP & REGISTRATION

The course is point-to-point. Runners and walkers will be provided with optional bus transportation back to E.C. Glass High School from Randolph College, compliments of Lynchburg City Schools. Participants should anticipate waiting for buses and are encouraged to find alternate transportation if desired.

Transportation is for participants only. Your bib # is your bus pass.

Participants are encouraged to pick up their race packets on Thursday to avoid congestion on Friday and race morning. Bib numbers will be assigned to participants at Packet Pickup.

Registration will not be available for events that have reached capacity.

All participants may register and/or pick up race packets for any of our race events on the following dates and times:

LEGENDARY RECOVERY The Story of a Local Runner’s Miraculous Journey

“From the time of the accident to a few months later, I got to watch my dad recover from the mental and physical state of a newborn infant to relearning everything. It was an incredible experiencing seeing the body and the mind come back together so quickly.”

Tommy’s astounding recovery allowed him to run the Virginia 10 Miler that fall – just under 5 months after the accident. His pace that year was 9:08, a mark of true resilience.

Runners of the Virginia 10 Miler, Lynchburg Road Runners Club members, and everyone who knows Tommy has been inspired for a decade by the determination he showed to get back to what he loved, as well as his continued motivation to cross our finish line each year.

Lynchburg locals felt called into action following the accident. One group was inspired to launch a fundraiser and spend what was raised on helmets for children in the area.

Tommy Harris, 78, is a Lynchburg legend. A triathlete since the 70s, he first ran the Virginia 10 Miler in its early days. His family would cheer him on, and his son, Tom, remembers being at the start and finish line as a teenager. He’s been a well-known member of the Lynchburg running community ever since, a former President of the Lynchburg Road Runners Club, and has over 20 Virginia 10 Milers under his belt.

Everything came to a halt in May of 2007 when he collided with a telephone pole during a long bike ride. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and crushed bones on a full side of his body. Tommy spent the following months in and out of various hospitals – with every doctor in agreement that if he were not wearing a helmet or in such great physical shape, he probably would not have recovered.

However, the most remarkable element of his story is how quickly he rebounded. His adult son, Tom, recounts,

When asked about his father, Tom Harris says, “Dad is an inspiration! He is very focused, in business, in life, in exercise, in everything. His motivation is about personal success – it’s about running the race again. He is always working toward success as he defines it.” He also shared that Tommy is a family man, supporting his grandchildren in their various activities and sports.

Tommy and his son, Tom, plan to run the Virginia 10 Miler together this year, celebrating “10 on 10”: the 10-mile race on the 10th anniversary of his accident and recovery.

If you had to choose, what would you say is the best part of the Genworth Virginia 10 Miler?

SUCCEEDING AS A COLLEGIATE AND OLYMPIC ATHLETE

My favorite part of participating in the race is the tremendous running community that exists in Lynchburg, which is particularly on display the day of the race. You can see it in the weeks leading up to the race as everyone is busy training on the course, and on race day the excitement is everywhere. It’s just a great day!

Two-time Olympian and US record holder Molly Huddle will be speaking at Lynchburg College on Thursday night at 6:30. Event is open to the public!

What makes Genworth’s relationship with the Virginia 10 Miler special?

Genworth’s relationship to the race goes all the way back to the beginning, when George Stewart, the CEO of First Colony Life Insurance, provided the funding to make those first races possible. It has continued from that day, through all the changes that Genworth has been through, from First Colony to GE Financial Assurance, to Genworth. The race is an important part of who we are in the Lynchburg community, and we’re proud to be title sponsor. The race is one of the things that makes Lynchburg special, and we’re thrilled to be a part of that.

What impact do you think the Virginia 10 Miler has on the Lynchburg Community?

The Genworth Virginia 10 Miler is one of those things that truly belongs to Lynchburg. In terms of an athletic event, it brings people together from all skill levels, from serious runners to walkers out to enjoy the camaraderie and fun. Another aspect that continues to grow is that of corporate involvement. It’s great to see so many companies participating, and that only strengthens the tie between the race and the community.

We’re so grateful for Genworth’s support, both in sponsorship and other avenues. Tell us all that your staff does for the race?

We have a great group of people who love being a part of the race!

We’re the title sponsor, so of course we participate with monetary support, but it has also become one of our big volunteer projects.

Here are some of the things that we do: • Participate in the planning meetings • Provide the runners’ bags and lanyards for Amazing Mile participants • Stuff the bags with giveaway items (all 3,000 of them!)

• Provide volunteers for some areas such as finish lines and packet pickup • Host a Genworth tent with giveaway items and info on race day • Host a big Genworth employee after party to encourage participation on race day • Pay the entry fee for all our runners • Provide an hour of free coffee and donuts for everyone on race morning, and the opportunity to buy them throughout the day

What word of advice do you have for this year’s runners?

If you’re new to the race, don’t let Farm Basket Hill intimidate you—you can do it! For all runners and walkers, make sure you soak in the energy of the crowds, the bands on the course, the excitement in the air, and just have fun!

In addition, many people from James River Day School wore them at various events over the course of the year, including lacrosse practices, cross country meets, and the like.

As for Ali? She fought to prove she could conquer breast cancer and wrapped up treatments in April. She’s now feeling healthy and strong, more grateful than ever to be back at work and active again.

Ali sees running itself as therapeutic. “I have taken running to heart as a way of moving past breast cancer, both metaphorically and literally. Every step I take gets me one step further from it.”

The three are running the Virginia 4 Miler together this year.

The top 10 male and female finishers for the Virginia 10 Miler will be recognized on the main stage along with RRCA 10-Mile Virginia National award winners. NET TIME VS. GUN TIME Gun time will be used to determine placing for all categories receiving prize money/bonuses. These categories include Overall awards, Masters Champions, Grand Masters Champions, and Senior Champions. Age group awards will be determined using Chronotrack (chip) time. There is no double-dipping of prizes.
