The historic Genworth Virginia 10 Miler celebrates its 43rd anniversary on Saturday, September 24, 2016. Our community traditionally hosts participants from more than 6 countries and 30 states. Our weekend of events includes the 10-mile run, 4-mile run, 4-mile walk, and Amazing Mile Children's Run. We have had the privilege of hosting many elite runners over the years, including running legends Bill Rogers, Frank Shorter, Rod Dixon, and Joan Benoit Samuelson.

4-MILE RUN/WALK TRANSPORTATION BACK TO START The course is point-to-point. Runners and walkers will be provided with optional bus transportation back to E.C. Glass High School from Randolph College. Participants should anticipate waiting for buses and are encouraged to find alternate transportation if desired. Transportation is for participants only.

The Genworth Virginia 10 Miler is an RRCA State Championship Event. Since 1958, the RRCA has awarded championship events through a competitive bidding process at the National, Regional, and State level to RRCA member clubs and events to promote the sport of distance running. The RRCA Championship Event Series is the largest grassroots organized running series in the U.S., attracting over 320,000 runners each year.

VOLUNTEERS WHATEVER IT TAKES The Genworth Virginia 10 Miler is marked by dedicated volunteers that do whatever it takes to carry out the events’ reputation of being “Where Southern Hospitality Meets the Road.” Approximately 1,500 volunteers are required each year for the events to go off without a hitch, and nothing could be accomplished without their energetic attitudes and get-it-done mindsets.

As members of local non-profits, corporate sponsors, colleges, churches and more, volunteers are known for being hospitable, full of charisma, and reliable. Many of these various groups volunteer to staff the same portion of the course each year and never fail to carry out the mission with success and expecting no recognition.

One of the many groups deserving of acknowledgment

is the group of Randolph College volunteers that covers the segment of the course that curves from Rivermont Terrace onto Rivermont Avenue. Apart from the start/finish line, this section of the course is arguably the most spectator-filled area, leaving a powerful impact on runners.

Matt Giles, a 10-mile finisher shared, “it’s a serious morale booster.” “As a runner it is definitely a spot on the course that I look forward to for that extra encouragement to help me be the best that I can be!”

He explains that the impact volunteers in this portion of the course have on runners is that they “hold a rope to guide runners and keep spectators off the course since that is a heavily populated area. They hold signs of encouragement and cheer loudly!”

Runners welcome any encouragement they can get during this segment of the course. Allison Braun recalls of her first experience running the 10-mile course, “I really loved that area for spectators because everyone is coming up from the last big hill before turning right and making their way on a flat surface which is Rivermont.” She shares that “it’s great for the 4-mile participants because it’s the last little stretch before their finish.”

The strength to finish is so greatly impacted by this setting, and none of it would be possible without the enthusiastic volunteers from Randolph College and many other volunteers at that location!

Thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers for making the Genworth Virginia 10 Miler events possible!
