WWII Heritage Alliance
Launches Statewide Visitation Program VirginiaFieldTrips.com EDFORD, VA — Wherever American forces went during World War II, Kilroy was there. Sailors found him scrawled on the bulkheads of newly commissioned ships. When soldiers landed on Pacific Islands for the first time, they discovered Kilroy waiting for them. Platoons spotted him chalked on the rubble of bombed-out cities. Now you can find him all over Virginia! The World War II Heritage Alliance, a coalition of seven museums and memorials around the Commonwealth, kicks off “Operation Kilroy”. The new initiative encourages visitors to learn about Virginia’s role in the war and the war’s impact on the home front. Named for the iconic graffiti of World War II, visitors are issued an “Operation Kilroy” passport to collect stamps from participating sites. After four stamps a passport can be redeemed for a prize at the fourth location. Participating sites are: National D-Day Memorial – Bedford Stonewall Brigade Museum – Verona Virginia Holocaust Museum – Richmond Virginia War Memorial – Richmond Virginia Aviation Museum – Virginia Beach MacArthur Memorial – Norfolk Hampton Roads Naval Museum – Norfolk Profiles of Honor traveling exhibit – various stops around Virginia Passports are available at the sites, regional welcome centers, or at www.wwiiheritagealliance.org.

Where Science and Nature Come to Life!
N
VirginiaFieldTrips.com
EWPORT NEWS, VA — The Virginia Living Museum is the mid-Atlantic region’s premier science education facility where science and nature really come to life. Nowhere else can your students explore all of Virginia’s physiographic regions in a day and encounter more than 250 living native species of animals and plants exhibited in their natural habitats. The museum’s indoor and outdoor exhibits are carefully designed to reinforce Virginia’s Standards of Learning for Science (SOLs) and national science standards. Every exhibit focuses on an important concept: Virginia’s physiographic regions, animal and plant adaptations, endangered and threatened species, environmental conservation, food chains and webs, predator/prey relationships and much more. Students can pick up and examine real natural history specimens like sea turtle ribs, mammal pelts and fossils in four hands-on Discovery Centers. The Living Green environmental house and surrounding Conservation Garden showcase the most innovative environmentally friendly construction techniques. Botanical gardens throughout the grounds are planted with native wildflowers that attract butterflies and many other pollinators. Along the outdoor boardwalk trail that leads through shady woodland exhibits students will encounter
rare red wolves, bald eagles, stately herons, egrets, brown pelicans and other wetland birds, playful river otters and so much more. To enhance the educational impact of your visit, the museum also offers a full menu of formal school programs that support STEM education in all grade levels, taught by a professional faculty of scientist/instructors. All school programs are grade-level targeted, fully correlated to Virginia SOLs and national standards, and combine inquiry-based investigations with real museum specimens and live animals for an unforgettable learning experience. Then, the children head to the Petting Farm to visit the animals in their fall habitat, which includes a giant hay stack and playground! Then, off to the pumpkin patch, where children select their very own pumpkin to take home. Finally, don’t forget to bring your lunch or snack to enjoy on the farm. Every child will be provided with a bag to hold their pumpkin. Pumpkin patch field trips are approximately 90 minutes and require an advance reservation.
