'As We Are and As We May Be' from Walter Besant. Novelist and historian (1836-1901). Excerpt from As We Are and as We May Be Logically arranged, is asked to notice the date in each case fixed to them. Almost without exception, those passages which cannot fail to strike him as nearly exact repetitions, whether of argument or of example, will be seen to have been written at considerable intervals of time. A series of papers, composed in diferent circumstances, and with no design of collec tive re-issue in any particular form, will always present these repetitions and they serve to emphasize the author' s message. The lapse of time will also account for the apparent inaccuracy of a few state ments, and for the fact that some of the occurrences alluded to in the future tense were accomplished during Sir Walter Besant's lifetime. As We Are and As We May Be is the exposition of a practical philan thropist's creed, and of his hopes for the progress of his fellow-countrymen. Some of these hopes may never be realized some he had the great happiness to see bear fruit. And for the realization of all he spared no pains. The personal service of humanity, that in these pages he urges repeatedly on others, he was himself ever the first to give. As a fashion it is not so extraordinary as the hoop-skirt, or as the neck ru, which is again rising as a background to the lovely head. But the remarkable thing about it is that heretofore in all nations and times, and in all changes of fashion in dress, the rose has held its own as the queen of owers and as the finest expres sion of sentiment. But here comes a aunting thing with no desirable perfume, looking as if it were cut with scissors out of tissue-paper, but capable Of taking infinite varieties of color, and growing as big as a curtain tassel, that literally captures the world, and spreads all over the globe, like the Canada thistle. This book examines, from the angle of more than a dozen perspectives, the heritage of Mikhail Bakhtin, one of the most prominent thinkers and influential literary figures of the twentieth century. It opens a new critical discourse that reshapes our current understanding of Bakhtin. The present volume has as its central aim a reassessment of the works of Ivan Turgenev for the twenty-first century. Against the background of a decline in interest in nineteenth-century literature the articles gathered here seek to argue that the period in general, and his work in particular, still have much to offer the modern sensibility. The volume also offers a great variety of approaches. Some of the contributors tackle major works by Turgenev, including Rudin and Smoke, while others address key themes that run through all his creative work. Yet others address his influence, as well as his broader relationship with Russian and other cultures. A final group of articles examines other key figures in Russian literary culture, including Belinskii, Herzen and Tolstoi. The work will therefore be of interest to students, postgraduates and specialists in

A study of the rise of the memoir through an exploration of works by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Edmund Gosse, Virginia Woolf, George Orwell, Vladimir Nabokov, Primo Levi, and Maxine Hong Kingston. Laughter, Literature, Violence, 18401930 investigates the strange, complex, even paradoxical relationship between laughter, on the one hand, and violence, war, horror, death, on the other. It does so in relation to philosophy, politics, and key nineteenth- and twentieth-century literary texts, by Edgar Allan Poe, Edmund Gosse, Wyndham Lewis and Katherine Mansfield – texts which explore the far reaches of Schadenfreude, and so-called ‘superiority theories’ of laughter, pushing these theories to breaking point. In these literary texts, the violent superiority often ascribed to laughter is seen as radically unstable, co-existing with its opposite: an anarchic sense of equality. Laughter, humour and comedy are slippery, duplicitous, ambivalent, self-contradictory hybrids, fusing apparently discordant elements. Now and then, though, literary and philosophical texts also dream of a different kind of laughter, one which reaches beyond its alloys – a transcendent, ‘perfect’ laughter which exists only in and for itself. Both James’s life and his literary career might be figured as a double spiral rooted at the one end in the American soil and in romanticism, contracting in its middle

Algernon Charles Swinburne was born on April 5th, 1837, in London, into a wealthy Northumbrian family. He was educated at Eton and at Balliol College, Oxford, but did not complete a degree. In 1860 Swinburne published two verse dramas but achieved his first literary success in 1865 with Atalanta in Calydon, written in the form of classical Greek tragedy. The following year 'Poems and Ballads' brought him instant notoriety. He was now identified with 'indecent' themes and the precept of art for art's sake. Although he produced much after this success in general his popularity and critical reputation declined. The most important qualities of Swinburne's work are an intense lyricism, his intricately extended and evocative imagery, metrical virtuosity, rich use of assonance and alliteration, and bold, complex rhythms. Swinburne's physical appearance was small, frail, and plagued by several other oddities of physique and temperament. Throughout the 1860s and 1870s he drank excessively and was prone to accidents that often left him bruised, bloody, or unconscious. Until his forties he suffered intermittent physical collapses that necessitated removal to his parents' home while he recovered. Throughout his career Swinburne also published literary criticism of great worth. His deep knowledge of world literatures contributed to a critical style rich in quotation, allusion, and comparison. He is particularly noted for discerning studies of Elizabethan dramatists

'At Home with the Jardines' from Lilian Bell. American author (1867-1929). I have never dared even inquire why our best man began calling my husband the Angel. He was with us a great deal during the first months of our marriage, and he is very observing, so I decided to let sleeping dogs lie. I, too, am observing. It is only fair to state, in justice to the best man, that I am a woman of emotional mountain peaks and dark, deep valleys, while the Angel is one vast and sunny plateau. With him rain comes in soothing showers, while rain in my disposition means a soaking, drenching torrent which sweeps away cattle and cottages and leaves roaring rivers in its wake. But it took Mary to discover that the smiling plateau was bedded on solid rock, and had its root in infinity. Mary is my cook! I have never dared even inquire why our best man began calling my husband the Angel. But it took Mary to discover that the smiling plateau was bedded on solid rock, and had its root in infinity. Mary is my cook! Yet Mary is more than cook. She is my housekeeper, mother, trained nurse, corporation counsel, keeper of the privy purse, chancellor of the exchequer, fighter of exorbitant bills, seamstress, linen woman, doctor of small ills, the acme of perpetual good nature, and my best friend. Lilian Lida Bell (pen name, Mrs. Arthur Hoyt Bogue; 1867-1929) was an American novelist and travel writer. Her works included At Home with Jardines, Hope Loring, Abroad with the Jimmies, The Interference of Patricia, A Book of Girls, and The Lilian Bell Birthday Book. In addition to her novels, Bell was a travel writer. She graduated from Dearborn Seminary, Chicago. Her father, Maj. William W. Bell, served during the American Civil War, and so did her grandfather, Gen. Joseph Warren Bell, who, though a Southerner, sold and freed his slaves before the war, brought his family North, and organized the 13th Illinois Cavalry. Among the Virginian patriots at the time of the American Revolution was her great-great-grandfather, Captain Thomas Bell. An interesting story about the marriage of Aubrey and Faith Jardine and all the trials and tribulations of their domestic life, problems with their house, relatives, guests, their cook and other domestic staff, all narrated in an 'innocent' and charming way evocative of the time period.Just a light, frothy read and you have to remember as the reader the time this was set and written in and to appreciate the morals and way of life of the day so at times though it sounds archaic in its tone and viewpoints you have to accept it just for what it is, a product of its time.Overall a great read as it gives you a glimpse into the

It was love at first sight when John Lansing and Mary Hollister first met at Pinney’s ranch, and four years later they are happily married. But when Austin Flint is found murdered, suspicion falls on an innocent Lansing, forcing him to flee town and leave behind everything he loves in order to prove his innocence. This tense and gripping tale will delight admirers of Bellamy's other works, such as ́Hooking Watermelons ́ and ́Deserted ́. Edward Bellamy (1850 - 1898) was an American author, journalist and political activist. His novel ‘Looking Backward: 2000-1887’ (1888) was one of the most successful books published in the United States in the 19th century and influenced a generation of intellectuals. Referenced in many Marxist publications of the time, the book inspired the formation of Nationalist Clubs dedicated to spreading his political ideas. Bellamy’s other works include the novels ‘Six to One’ (1878), ‘Dr. Heidenhoff's Process’ (1880), ‘Miss Ludington's Sister’ (1885), ‘Equality’ (1897), and ‘The Duke of Stockbridge; a Romance of Shays' Rebellion (1900)’. John Lansing first met Mary Hollister at the house of his friend Pinney, whose wife was her sister. She had soft gray eyes, a pretty color in her cheeks, rosy lips, and a charming figure. In the course of the evening somebody suggested mind-reading as a pastime, and Lansing, who had some powers, or supposed powers, in that direction, although he laughed at them himself, experimented in turn with the ladies. He failed with nearly every subject until it came Mary Hollister's turn. As she placed her soft palm in his, closed her eyes, and gave herself up to his influence, he knew that he should succeed with her, and so he did. She proved a remarkably sympathetic subject, and Lansing was himself surprised, and the spectators fairly thrilled, by the feats he was able to perform by her aid. After that evening he met her often, and there was more equally remarkable mind-reading; and then mind-reading was dropped for heart-reading, and the old, old story they read in each other's hearts had more fascination for them than the new science. Edward Bellamy (1850-1898) was an American author and socialist, most famous for his utopian novel set in the year 2000, Looking Backward from 2000 to 1887, published in 1888. His books include Dr. Heidenhoff's Process (1880), Miss Ludington's

When Christopher Madsen made the snap decision-perhaps a rash decision-to buy and renovate the famous 1916 racing yacht for which this story is named, he could scarcely have imagined the consequences that were to follow. During the renovation Madsen's investigation of the original owner, New York senator Holland Sackett Duell, uncovered a remarkable true life 1920s adventure and love story; one which fully brings to life the era and flair of Gatsby and Hemmingway yet, by contrast, Rowdy is completely true, historically significant and meticulously documented in support of the authenticity. The reader first walks in Duell's footsteps as he departs New York in 1918 to participate in the Great War (the most detailed accounting ever written on New York's 306th Field Artillery, 77th Division). Highly decorated upon return, the adventure continues as Duell is immersed in politics at the highest level, the birth of Hollywood, sailing competitions with some of the richest men in America, fortunes and mansions and love affairs as well as scandalous affairs. All evidence pointed to Beryl who stood to gain if the old general died. Misalnya dalam At the Mountains of Madness, pembaca diajak menempuh perjalanan mendebarkan, melampaui batas nalar. Ilmu pengetahuan diadu dengan mitos. Kengerian menjelma menjadi nayta. His first tragedy, La Thebaide (1664) and its successor, Alexandre (1665), both had classical themes, but he was already entering into controversy, taking offence at the accusation that he was polluting the minds of his audiences. He broke all ties with Port-Royal, and proceeded with Andromaque (1667), which told the story of Andromache, widow of Hector, and her fate following the Trojan War. In Phaedra (1677), Racine again chose a subject already treated by Greek and Roman tragic poets, this time, Euripides' play Hippolytus. Athalie (sometimes translated Athalia) is a 1691 play, the final tragedy of Jean Racine, and has been described as the masterpiece of 'one of the greatest literary artists known' and the 'ripest work' of Racine's genius. Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve deemed it comparable to Oedipus Rex in beauty, with 'the true God added.' August Wilhelm Schlegel thought Athalie to be 'animated by divine breath'; other critics have regarded the poetics of drama in the play to be superior to those of Aristotle. The forgotten modernist, May Sinclair was close friends with Ezra Pound, Ford Madox Ford, Robert Frost and prominent figures of the London literary scene. She was the first critic to use the term “stream of consciousness” to describe a literary technique. Quick to assimilate new ideas of the Modernist movement, she wrote the stirring and formally experimental Bildungsroman ‘Mary Olivier’ (1919). A criticallyrespected and popular novelist, Sinclair was also a poet, philosopher, translator and critic, whose works span from the late 1880’s up until the late 1920’s. For the first time in publishing history, this eBook presents May Sinclair’s complete fictional works, with numerous illustrations, many rare texts, informative introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material. 'This collection of short stories about the fictional quiltmaker Aunt Jane Parish was originally published in 1907 by Caroline Obenchain (who published under the name of Eliza Calvert Hall). Known for her gentle folk wisdom, Aunt Jane vividly describes a picturesque way of life in the rural South of the nineteenth century.'- goodreads Based on a chapter from Aunt Jane of Kentucky by Eliza Calvert Hall, originally published in 1907, and has been edited and adapted for publication in this form. In 1907, author, poet, essayist, and folk art historian Eliza Calvert Hall (1856–1935) published Aunt Jane of Kentucky, a collection of stories about rural life infused with the spirit and gentle good humor of its elderly narrator, Aunt Jane. The book and several sequels achieved wide popularity, reaching an estimated one million readers in her lifetime, and placed Hall in the front ranks of 'local color' fiction writers of her time. Eliza Calvert Hall's life and work unfolded during a time of restlessness and change for American women. Born Eliza 'Lida' Calvert in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Hall experienced the upheaval of both the Civil War and family scandal. Forced to help support her mother and four siblings by teaching school, she became a published poet, adopting her grandmother's name, Hall, as her pseudonym. At twenty-nine, she married William A. Obenchain, and in the space of eight years gave birth to four children. As Hall struggled to balance her writing career with the duties of a nineteenth-century wife and mother, suffragist Laura Clay was lobbying for every woman's right to vote. Hall joined the battle, writing fearlessly in support of suffrage and equality. While her passionate essays served as a direct appeal for this cause, her creative writing also carried a feminist spirit, celebrating the strength, humor, love, and art of the common woman. In Eliza Calvert Hal: Kentucky Author and Suffragistl, Lynn E. Niedermeier tells the story of this remarkable Kentuckian for the first time. Hall's challenge was to balance the artist's creative ambitions with the crusader's passion for achieving the goal of political equality for American women. Her successes did not stem from privilege or leisure; although she was an acclaimed writer, Hall was an ordinary woman, a wife and mother of moderate economic means. Through the power of her words, she challenged others to match her courage, independence, intellectual energy, and loyalty to her sex. 'A character who became a Kentucky icon in the early twentieth century, along with Mrs. Wiggs and the Little Colonel, was Aunt Jane, the garrulous old woman who tells stories of olden times in the Pennyrile area of western Kentucky. Writing under her

Autumn This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING! Excerpt from Bacon Is Not Shakespeare Sir Edward Durning Lawrence s book Bacon ls Shake peare. I appeared 111 1910 and as far as I remember was not taken very seriously by the reviewers. But having recently come across it, and finding that the author boasts of having sent a copy of his misleading work to every public library in the world, I realise that something must be done. Many will read it in these institutions who know nothing of the arguments which refute it and their judgment may be warped for life. Failing stronger pens than mine, I hope this little work will do something to mitigate the mischief. Since the publication of the book, Sir Edwin has sent to school teachers and others a copy of a pamphlet The Shakespeare Myth. As this often gives only the conclusions and not the fallacious reasons upon which those conclusions are based, its effects may be serious. In a note accompanying it, he says Now that it has been proved that William Shakespeare was unable to write so much as his own name. Fighting with French : A Tale of the New Army At six o'clock next morning sergeant-majors and corporals went round the hall stirring up the sleepers. There were groans and grumbles, but the men turned out, and there was a general dash for the washing basins--one among twenty men--and a free fight for the razors. Our two friends had brought their own safeties and pocket mirrors, and when they had finished operating upon their downy cheeks there was a competition among their new messmates for the loan of those indispensable articles. 'Your bristles will ruin a blade in no time, Ginger,' said Harry, as he handed over the razor, somewhat ruefully. 'Perseverance, that's all you want,' replied Ginger, through the lather. 'Yours 'll be as hard as mine in time.' At half-past six each man seized a mug and rushed off to the cook-house across the yard for cocoa. They sat about the hall, swilling the morning beverage, grumbling at the blankets, asking one another who'd be a soldier; then they rubbed up their boots and made their beds, and were ready for the seven o'clock parade. Dressed only in their shirts and slacks they formed up in the drill-hall. There was a good deal of disorder, and the N.C.O.'s, in early-morning temper, roared above the din. It happened that Dick Kennedy was orderly officer for the week. When the men were at last ranged in ranks, dressed, and numbered by the sergeants, he posted himself in front and, with a nervous twitching of the lips, said gently— 'Battalion, 'shun!' 'Louder, louder!' whispered a fellow-officer who had come up behind him. 'This isn't a mothers' meeting.' The second lieutenant tried again. 'Battalion, 'shun! Advance in fours from the right. Form fours!' Some of the men knew what to do, but many of the new recruits looked about them blankly. 'You don't know the movements?' said the lieutenant. 'Well, when I say 'form fours,' even numbers take one pace to the left with the left foot and one pace to the right with the right. Now, form fours!' The result was disorder--jostling in the ranks, cries of 'Who're you a-shoving of!' 'Sorry! My mistake!' said Kennedy, with a smile. 'We'll try again. I should have said, 'one pace to the rear with the left foot.' Now then, form fours!' His cheerfulness won the men's sympathy, and the order being now correctly carried out, one or two of them cheered. 'Silence in the ranks!' roared Kennedy. 'Right! Quick march!' and the battalion marched off. The day's work began with a run for three-quarters of an hour, to the bank of a river some two miles away. A 'run' so called,

The books are available in print, as well as ebooks. DigiCat hopes you will treat this work with the acknowledgment and passion it deserves as a classic of world literature. Balsamo, The Magician by Alexander Dumas. An Historical Romance of the Great French Revolution. This English translation first published in 1892. A historical romance set in the period of King Louis XV relating the trials and tribulations of the court and life in this time. A wonderfully written and interesting novel with a historical background. The Memoirs of a Physician Series is placed in the time of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. The series presents an idealized portrait of France during the reign of Queen Marie Antoinette, but it also shows the decadence of the nobility of the time, with its ending seeming to suggest the 'beginning of the end' of the nobility. Novels are inspired by the actual historical characters, such as Count Cagliostro and Ange Pitou, and the major events in the history of France, storming the Bastille, French Revolution and The Reign of Terror. Alexandre Dumas, père (1802-1870) was a French writer whose works have been translated into nearly 100 languages and he is one of the most widely read French authors. His most famous works are The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers. Reproduction of the original: Beatrice Boville and Other Stories by Louise de la Ramée 'Beatrice Boville and Other Stories' from Ouida. Pseudonym of the English novelist Maria Louise Rame (1839-1908).' Maria Louise Ramé (1839-1908) was an English author. She wrote under the pen name Ouida. She wrote more than 40 novels, children's books and collections of short stories and essays. She was an animal rights activist and animal rescuer, and at times owned as many as thirty dogs. Her work went through several phases during her career. In her early period, her novels were a hybrid of the sensationalism of the 1860s and the proto-adventure novels dubbed 'muscular fiction' that were emerging in part as a romanticization of imperial expansion. Later her work was more along the lines of historical romance, though she never stopped commenting on contemporary society. Sympathetic portraits of tragic painters and singers fill her later novels. 'To compass her with sweet observances, To dress her beautifully and keep her true.' That, according to Mr. Tennyson's lately-published opinion, is the devoir of that deeply-to-be-pitied individual, l'homme marie. Possibly in the times of which the Idyls treat, Launcelot and Gunevere might have been the sole, exceptional mauvais sujets in the land, and woad, being the chief ingredient in the toilet-dress, mightn't come quite so expensive. But nowadays 'sweet observances,' rendered, I presume, by gifts from Hunt and Roskell's and boxes in the grand tier, tell on a cheque-book so severely; 'keeping her true' is such an exceedingly problematical performance, to judge by Sir C. C.'s breathless work, and 'dressing her beautifully' comes so awfully expensive, with crinoline and cashmeres, pink pearls, and Mechlin, and the beau sexe's scornful repudiation, not alone of a faded silk, like poor Enid's, but of the handsomest dress going, if it's damned by being 'seen twice,' that I have ever vowed that, plaise a Dieu, I will never marry, and with heaven's help will keep the[Pg 10] vow better than I might most probably keep the matrimonial ones if I took them. Beatrice Boville and Other Stories: Large Print Ouida The many works already in print by this versatile authoress have established her reputation as a novelist, and these short stories contribute largely to the stock of pleasing narratives and adventures alive to the memory of all who are given to romance and fiction. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Bede's Charity by Hesba Stretton

When Margery Bede stayed at home to care for her father and brother Stephen, she sacrificed all hope of marriage. Her father died, Stephen went off to Australia, and Margery moved to London where she poured her life into raising Cor, a street boy. Broken-hearted Margery gave her life to others but was left alone and unappreciated. The story's theme is maintaining faith and joy in the midst of disappointment. A quote from the book: 'I cannot be anything but happy,' I said, 'because I believe the Lord Christ has given me the right and the power to become one of the daughters of the Lord God almighty; and there never was a father, even a king upon his throne, who cares for his children as my heavenly Father cares for me. Could I be anything else but happy and at peace.' Highly respected as a writer by critics and commentators, Hesba Stretton (1832-1911) was a vigorous campaigner for the rights of oppressed minorities and a founding member of the London Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. Though she is known today primarily as a writer of evangelical fiction for young people, including Jessica's First Prayer, this characterization fails to acknowledge the extensive range of her writings and social activism. Elaine Lomax re-examines Stretton's writing for children and adults, situating her body of work within the broad social and cultural context of its production to expose the depth and complexity of Stretton's engagement with contemporary ideas, debates, and discourses. Mining nineteenth-century periodicals, archival materials, and the minutes of the Religious Tract Society, as well as Stretton's own revealing log books, Lomax demonstrates Stretton's preoccupation with those at the bottom or on the margins of society. At the same time, she advances our understanding of the intersection of cultural and literary representations of the child and childhood with wider images of the colonized or excluded, and our knowledge of the history and development of juvenile literature and women's writing. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. 'Don't be such a little donkey, ' said Fergus consequentially. 'Don't you know we are going to school, and I am three years younger than Wilfred was?' 'It is only a petticoat school, ' said Val, 'kept by ladies.' 'It isn't.' 'It is; I heard Harry say so.' 'And yours is all butchers and bakers and candlestick makers.' On which they fell on each other, each with a howl of defiance. Fergus grabbed at Val's pigtail, and she was buffeting him vehemently when Harry came out, held them apart, and demanded if this were the way to make their mother easy in leaving them. 'She said it was a pet-pet-petticoat school, ' sobbed Fergus. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. She was devoted to the Church of England, and much influenced by John Keble, a near neighbour and one of the leaders of the Oxford Movement. Her novels reflected the values and concerns of Anglo-Catholicism. She began writing in 1848, and published during her long life about 100 works, chiefly novels. Her first commercial success, The Heir of Redclyffe (1854), provided the funding to enable the schooner Southern Cross to be put into service on behalf of George Selwyn. Similar charitable works were done with the profits from later novels. She was also editor, for nearly forty years, of a magazine for young ladies, the Monthly Packet with a varied readership, but targeted at British Anglican girls. A classic piece of writing, props up Yonge's crucial purpose of writing, 'the Glory of God.' In the novel she has not sermonize the religion but she has put the things in the natural way. The plot of the story is well-knitted and entangles the motif of strength of will and morally stalwart character. The book is incredible for its simple language, life-like characters and spontaneity in the style. This interdisciplinary collection of essays explores the life and work of Charlotte M. Yonge, a highly influential and popular nineteenth-century writer who is emerging from a long period of critical neglect. Its wide-

Other notable works by this author include: 'Baddeck, And That Sort of Thing' (1874), 'In the Levant' (1876), and 'On Horseback, in the Southern States' (1888). Charles Dudley Warner was american essayist, novelist, and friend of Mark Twain (1829-1900). Being a Boy by Charles Dudley Warner One of the best things in the world to be is a boy; it requires no experience, though it needs some practice to be a good one. The disadvantage of the position is that it does not last long enough; it is soon over; just as you get used to being a boy, you have to be something else, with a good deal more work to do and not half so much fun. And yet every boy is anxious to be a man, and is very uneasy with the restrictions that are put upon him as a boy. Good fun as it is to yoke up the calves and play work, there is not a boy on a farm but would rather drive a yoke of oxen at real work. What a glorious feeling it is, indeed, when a boy is for the first time given the long whip and permitted to drive the oxen, walking by their side, swinging the long lash, and shouting 'Gee, Buck!' 'Haw, Golden!' 'Whoa, Bright!' and all the rest of that remarkable language, until he is red in the face, and all the neighbors for half a mile are aware that something unusual is going on. If I were a boy, I am not sure but I would rather drive the oxen than have a birthday. The proudest day of my life was one day when I rode on the neap of the cart, and drove the oxen, all alone, with a load of apples to the cider-mill. I was so little that it was a wonder that I did n't fall off, and get under the broad wheels. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. The little old kitchen had quieted down from the bustle and confusion of mid-day; and now, with its afternoon manners on, presented a holiday aspect, that as the principal room in the brown house, it was eminently proper it should have. It was just on the edge of the twilight; and the little Peppers, all except Ben, the oldest of the flock, were enjoying a 'breathing spell,' as their mother called it, which meant some quiet work suitable for the hour. All the 'breathing spell' they could remember however, poor things; for times were always hard with them nowadays; and since the father died, when Phronsie was a baby, Mrs. Pepper had had hard work to scrape together money enough to put bread into her children's mouths, and to pay the rent of the little brown house. But she had met life too bravely to be beaten down now. So with a stout heart and a cheery face, she had worked away day after day at making coats, and tailoring and mending of all descriptions; and she had seen with pride that couldn't be concealed, her noisy, happy brood growing up around her, and filling her heart with comfort, and making the little brown house fairly ring with jollity and fun.'Poor things!' she would say to herself, 'they haven't had any bringing up; they've just scrambled up!' And then she would set her lips together tightly, and fly at her work faster than ever. 'I must get schooling for them some way, but I don't see how!'Once or twice she had thought, 'Now the time is coming!' but it never did: for winter shut in very cold, and it took so much more to feed and warm them, that the money went faster than ever. And then, when the way seemed clear again, the store changed hands, so that for a long time she failed to get her usual supply of sacks and coats to make; and that made sad havoc in the quarters and half-dollars laid up as her nest egg.

Benjamin Franklin by Benjamin Franklin

The text of this celebrated work by the early American statesman and inventor is supplemented by notes on its creation and influence. It takes a very inclusive anthology to encompass the protean personality and range of interests of Benjamin Franklin, but The Portable Benjamin Franklin succeeds as no collection has. In addition to the complete Autobiography, the volume contains about 100 of Franklin’s major writings—essays, journalism, letters, political tracts, scientific observations, proposals for the improvement of civic and personal life, literary bagatelles, and private musings. The selections are reprinted in their entirety and organized chronologically within six sections that represent the full range of Franklin’s temperament. The result is a zestful read for Franklin scholars and anyone wanting to know and enjoy this American icon. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators. A mention of flatulence might conjure up images of bratty high school boys or lowbrow comics. But one of the most eloquent—and least expected—commentators on the subject is Benjamin Franklin. The writings in Fart Proudly reveal the rogue who lived peaceably within the philosopher and statesman. Included are 'The Letter to a Royal Academy'; 'On Choosing a Mistress'; 'Rules on Making Oneself Disagreeable'; and other jibes. Franklin's irrepressible wit found an outlet in perpetrating hoaxes, attacking marriage and other sacred cows, and skewering the English Parliament. Reminding us of the humorous, irreverent side of this American icon, these essays endure as both hilarious satire and a timely reminder of the importance of a free press. Ben Franklin was the scientist who, with the help of a kite, discovered that lightning is electricity. He was also a statesman, an inventor, a printer, and an author-a man of such amazingly varied talents that some people claimed he had magical powers! Full of all the details kids will want to know, the true story of Benjamin Franklin is by turns sad and funny, but always honest and awe-inspiring. The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin was written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a torturous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of autobiography ever written. In this outstanding picture book biography, first-time readers will meet one of America's most extraordinary historical figures. Inventor, philosopher, writer, publisher and adviser for the Declaration of Independence, Ben Franklin brought to a new and growing nation his intelligence and wit. Reproduction of the original: Bert Lloyd ́s Boyhood by J. McDonald Oxley Reproduction of the original: Bert Lloyd ́s Boyhood by J. McDonald Oxley There is something so pleasing to the author of this volume-the first of several which have been kindly received by his American cousins-in the thought of being accorded the privilege of appearing before a new audience in the 'old home,' that the impulse to indulge in a foreword or two cannot be withstood. This collection of literature attempts to compile many of the classic, timeless works that have stood the test of time and offer them at a reduced, affordable price, in an attractive volume so that everyone can enjoy them. This work is a comparative study of nineteenth-century English-Canadian and French Canadian novel prefaces, a previously unexplored literary topic. As a study in Comparative Literature - with the application of a specific literary framework and methodology - the study conforms to theoretical and methodological postulates formulated in and prescribed by this framework when applied. This a priori postulate necessitates that the research on and the presentation of the Canadian novel preface be carried out in a specific manner, as follows. First, the study will establish the hypothesis that the preface to nineteenth-century English-Canadian and French-Canadian novels is a genre in its own right. This hypothesis will rest on the following: 1) a taxonomical survey of related terms meaning 'preface'; 2) a survey of secondary Iiterature of works dealing with the preface; 3) a discussion of the theoretical framework and methodology of the Empirical Theory of Literature and its appropriateness for the study of the preface; and 4) a discussion of the process of the compilation of the corpus of nineteenthcentury Canadian novel prefaces (Chapter one). In a second step, the theoretical postulate outlined in the hypothesis will be put into practice by the development and production of a preface typology (Chapter two). In a third step, further tenets of the Empirical Theory of Literature will be tested on the corpus of the prefaces (Chapter three). In a fourth step, the prefaces will be analysed following the tenets formulated in and prescribed by the systemic framework applied (Chapter four). Beth Woodburn is the tale of young, dreamy Beth who is in love with the willowy, fair Clarence Mayfair. Excerpt: 'He handed her a dainty little note, an invitation to tea from his sister Edith. Beth accepted with pleasure. She blushed as he pressed her hand in farewell, and their eyes met. That look and touch of his went very deep—deeper than they should have gone, perhaps; but the years will tell their tale. She watched him going down the hillside in the afternoon sunshine, then fell to dreaming again. What if, after all, she should not always stay alone with daddy?' '[...] Beth saw a faint shadow cross her father's face, but put it aside as fancy only and began to think of Arthur. He was an old play-fellow of hers. An orphan at an early age, he had spent his childhood on his uncle's farm, just beyond the pine wood to the north of her home. Her father had always taken a deep interest in him, and when the death of his uncle and aunt left him alone in the world, Dr. Woodburn had taken him into his home for a couple of years until he had gone away to school. Arthur had written once or twice, but Beth was staying with her Aunt Margaret, near Welland, that summer, and she had seen fit, for unexplained reasons, to stop the correspondence: so the friendship had ended there. It was five years now since she had seen her old play-fellow, and she found herself wondering if he would be greatly changed. After tea Beth took out her books, as usual, for an hour or two; then, about eight o'clock, with her tin-pail on her arm, started up the road for the milk. A follow-up to the earlier novel for younger readers, Betty Leicester, this charming holiday tale visits our young heroine as she returns to London with mixed feelings. Though she missed her adopted city when staying with relatives in a quaint coastal town in New England, after her return to the U.K., she finds herself pining for America. To ease her mind, she throws herself into enjoying the elegant holiday celebrations she attends. Two persons sat at a small breakfast-table near an open window, high up in Young's Hotel in Boston. It was a pleasant June morning, just after eight o'clock, and they could see the white clouds blowing over; but the gray walls of the Court House were just opposite, so that one cannot say much of their view of the world. The room was pleasanter than most hotel rooms, and the persons at breakfast were a girl of fifteen, named Betty Leicester, and her father. '[...]summon somebody else. Betty's eyes were full of tears when she came out of her room and met papa, who was just looking at his watch in the little parlor. 'Say 'God bless you, Betty, '' she managed to ask. 'God bless you, Betty, my dear Betty!' Mr. Leicester said gravely. 'God bless you, dear, and make you a blessing.' 'Papa dear, I wasn't really crying. You know that you're coming back within three months, and we shall be writing letters all the time, and Tideshead isn't like a strange place.' 'Dear me, no! you'll never wish to come away from Tideshead; give it my love, and 'call every bush my cousin, '' answered Mr. Leicester gayly as [...].' Sarah Orne Jewett (September 3, 1849 - June 24, 1909) was an American novelist, short story writer and poet, best known for her local color works set along or near the southern seacoast of Maine. Jewett is recognized as an important practitioner of American literary regionalism. Jewett's family had been residents of New England for many generations, and Sarah Orne Jewett was born in South Berwick, Maine. Her father was a doctor specializing in 'obstetrics and diseases of women and children.' and Jewett often accompanied him on his rounds, becoming acquainted with the sights and sounds of her native land and its people. As treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, a condition that developed in early childhood, Jewett was sent on frequent walks and through them also developed a love of nature. In later life, Jewett often visited Boston, where she was acquainted with many of the most influential literary figures of her day; but she always returned to South Berwick, small seaports near which were the inspiration for the towns of 'Deephaven' and 'Dunnet Landing' in her stories. Jewett was educated at Miss Olive Rayne's school and then at Berwick Academy, graduating in 1866. She supplemented her education through an extensive family library. Jewett was 'never overtly religious,' but after she joined the Episcopal church in 1871, she explored less conventional religious ideas. For example, her friendship with Harvard law professor Theophilus Parsons stimulated an interest

Edith Kellogg Dunton was the author of a popular series of early 20th century juvenile novels called the 'Betty Wales' series, which she wrote under the pseudonym Margaret Warde. CHAPTER I 'BACK TO THE COLLEGE AGAIN' 'Oh, Rachel Morrison, am I too late for the four-ten train?' Betty Wales, pink-cheeked and breathless, her yellow curls flying under her dainty lingerie hat, and her crisp white skirts held high to escape the dust of the station platform, sank down beside Rachel on a steamer trunk that the Harding baggage-men had been too busy or too accommodating to move away, and began to fan herself vigorously with a very small and filmy handkerchief. 'No, you're not late, dearie,' laughed Rachel, pulling Betty's hat straight, 'or rather the train is late, too. Where have you been?' Betty smiled reminiscently. 'Everywhere, pretty nearly. You know that cunning little freshman that had lost her trunks--' 'All those that I've interviewed have lost their trunks,' interpolated Rachel. Betty waved a deprecating hand toward the mountain of baggage that was piled up further down the platform. 'Oh, of course, in that lovely mess. Who wouldn't? But this girl lost hers before she got here-in Chicago or Albany, or maybe it was Omaha. She lives in Los Angeles, so she might have lost them almost anywhere, you see.' 'And of course she expected Prexy or the registrar to go back and look for them,' added Rachel. Betty laughed. 'Not she. Besides she doesn't seem to care a bit. She seems to think it's a splendid chance to go to New York next week and buy new clothes. But what she wanted of me was to tell her where she could get some shirt waists-just enough to last until she's perfectly sure that the trunks are gone for good. I didn't want to stick around here from three to four, so I said I'd go and show her Evans's and that little new shirt waist place. Of course I pointed out all the objects of interest along the way, and when I mentioned Cuyler's, she insisted upon going in to have ices.' 'And how many does that make for you to-day?' demanded Rachel severely. 'Well,' Betty defended herself, 'I treated you once, and you treated me once, and then we met Christy Mason, and as you couldn't go back with her I had to. But I only had lemonade that time. And this child was so comical, and it was such a good idea.' 'What was such a good idea?' inquired Rachel. 'Oh, didn't I tell you? Why, after we'd finished at Cuyler's, she asked me if there weren't any other places something like it, and she said she thought if we tried them all in a row we could tell which was best. But we couldn't,' sighed Betty regretfully, 'because of course things taste better when you're hungriest. But anyhow she wanted to keep on, because now she can give pointers to other freshmen, and make them think she is a sophomore.' 'How about the shirt waists?' 'Oh, she had just got to that when I had to leave her.' Betty rose, sighing, as a train whistled somewhere down the track. 'Do you suppose Georgia Ames will be on this one?' 'Who can tell?' said Rachel. 'There'll be somebody that we know anyway.... NEW PRINT WITH PROFESSIONAL TYPE-SET IN CONTRAST TO SCANNED

As Billie Bradley spoke, the man, who was her father, rose to his feet and thoughtfully brushed the dust from his clothes. Then he stood looking down at the hundreds and hundreds of postage stamps and old coins that filled the queer old trunk. 'The Princess Aline' - Morton Carlton, a portrait-painter of international reputation, is unlucky in love. It's not that he never meets the right women. It's only that when the right 'one' comes along, he changes his mind. Indeed, it seems he is destined to forever wander like a lost votary through Venus's domains. But one day a change appears on the horizon. He sees a portrait of the Princess Aline of Hohenwald in an illustrated newspaper, and falls madly in love with his artist's conception of her. Throwing all to the winds, he resolves to go to Europe and look her up. The quest begins. As is usual with Davis's stories, the plot moves right along. There are interesting diversions in each of the major capitals at which the travelers stop, and these give unmistakable local color and interest to the whole. However, the preservation of Imperial Europe's unique flavor is what gives this novel its chief value. Published in 1895. * * * * 'The Man Who Could Not Lose' - Published in 1911 and updated with an additional story in 1917, these eight stories continue Davis's fine tradition of dramatic and gripping writing. Beginning with a nearly destitute couple who risk their last savings on a race-track dream, then to a Foreign Service Civil Agent who risks his career refusing the demands of a powerful Senator, to a reporter who believes a story is hidden in a piece of paper found in a street gutter, these stories will keep you spell-bound in your seat. The stories included are: 'The Man Who Could Not Lose,' 'My Buried Treasure,' 'The Consul,' 'The Nature Faker,' 'Billy and the Big Stick,' 'The Frame-Up,' 'The Lost House,' and 'The Log of the 'Jolly Polly'.' Includes a commemorative foreword written by Leonard Wood. * * * * This volume includes the complete text of

'Entwistle—Philip Entwistle—is my name. By profession I am what is commonly known as a vet. It's our Annual General Meeting, and I'm due there at eight.' ''Fraid it will have to stop at the due,' said Mr. Barcroft grimly. 'It's 7.30 already.' 'You'll be all right,' continued Entwistle. 'There's a train back from Windyhill at 10.5, You're a stranger to the district?' 'Fairly so,' admitted Peter. 'I've take Ladybird Fold for three years.' 'Your name doesn't happen to be Norton—Andrew Norton?' 'No,' was the reply. 'Barcroft's my name. I know Norton. He's a newcomer. Only been here a week, I believe; and in that time he's frozen on to me. Kind of companionship in a strange land, so to speak. He seems a very decent sort; in fact, I rather like him. He's my nearest neighbour and he lives at least half a mile from Ladybird Fold.' 'What is he?' asked Entwistle. 'Independent?' 'So I should imagine. He has plenty of time on his hands, and spends a good part of it with me, except when I have to choke him off. He'll be sitting in my study when I get home, for a dead cert. Already he's made it a practice of looking me up at ten o'clock of an evening, after I've knocked off. You see,' he added apologetically. 'I have to work.'
