SALVATION Whence? Why?

Whither?

N t h e m i d s t of t h e C h r i s t i a n w o r l d t h e r e a r e m a n y c o n f l i c t i n g t h e o r i e s in r e l a t i o n t o m a n ' s e x i s t e n c e h e r e a n d in t h e h e r e a f t e r ; a l s o as t o t h e d u t i e s he o w e s t o himself, t o his f e l l o w m a n , a n d t o his C r e a t o r . It is i n d i s p u t a b l e t h a t s o m e k n o w l e d g e of ( 1 ) w h e r e w e c a m e f r o m , (2) w h y w e are here, and (3) w h e r e w e g o after w e leave this p r o b a t i o n is e s s e n t i a l t o t h e e n j o y m e n t a n d w e l l - b e i n g of e a c h m e m b e r of t h e h u m a n family. In t h e f o l l o w i n g p a g e s w e briefly set f o r t h t h e L a t t e r - d a y S a i n t belief o n t h e s e p o i n t s . W h i l e t h e s e b e l i e f s m a y differ w i d e l y f r o m t h e a c c e p t e d ideas of t h e C h r i s t i a n w o r l d , m a y w e s u g g e s t t h a t t h e differe n c e is not s o m u c h b e t w e e n t h e C h r i s t i a n s e c t s a n d t h e L a t t e r - d a y S a i n t s as it is b e t w e e n t h o s e s e c t s a n d t h e B i b l e . T h i s is a f a c t for w h i c h w e a r e in n o s e n s e r e s p o n s i b l e , a n d a f a c t w e c a n n o t alter or c h a n g e , even were we disposed to do so. A t t h e o u t s e t of this i n v e s t i g a t i o n it is d e e m e d p r o p e r a n d a d v i s a b l e t o refer to a n o t h e r p o i n t , s o that w e m a y have a clear u n d e r s t a n d i n g . T h e point is: S i n c e r i t y of belief d o e s not in a n y w a y e s t a b l i s h the correctness of a principle. Only an u n i m p e a c h a b l e t e s t i m o n y c a n d o t h a t . M a n ' s belief d o e s not a f f e c t a p r i n c i p l e in t h e least. T h e w h o l e w o r l d m a y b e l i e v e a p r i n c i p l e , a n d it m a y be u n t r u e ; t h e w h o l e w o r l d m a y r e f u s e to b e l i e v e a p r i n c i p l e , a n d it m a y b e t r u e . T h e u n b e l i e f of t h e p e o p l e in N o a h ' s d a y d i d not s t a y t h e f l o o d ; t h e u n b e l i e f of t h e J e w s d i d not p r o v e J e s u s a n i m p o s t e r ; a n d t h e killing of t h e A p o s t l e s d i d not p r o v e t h e i r d o c t r i n e s f a l s e . T h e a s s a s s i n a t i o n of J o s e p h S m i t h , by itself, d o e s nof p r o v e t h e d i v i n e n a t u r e of his a u t h o r i t y ; n e i t h e r will t h e r e j e c t i o n of t h e d o c t r i n e s he t a u g h t p r o v e t h e m w r o n g . If t h e d o c t r i n e s a r e t r u e — e v e n t h o u g h he w a s slain a n d his followers mobbed, driven, and persecuted—in the e n d t h e y will rise t r i u m p h a n t o v e r e v e r y o b s t a c l e a n d g r o w s t r o n g e r a n d s t r o n g e r , as e r r o r g r o w s w e a k e r and weaker. 1


Premortal Life N p r e s e n t i n g t h e p r i n c i p l e s of p r e m o r t a l life, t h e first p r i n c i p l e s of t h e g o s p e l , a n d b a p t i s m f o r t h e 7 d e a d , w e will s i m p l y q u o t e s c r i p t u r e . W e s t a t e a g a i n t h a t if t h e r e is a n y d i f f e r e n c e of o p i n i o n , it is b e t w e e n t h e r e a d e r a n d holy w r i t . The Apostle Paul's Injunction to the T h e s s a l o n i a n s w a s " P r o v e all t h i n g s ; h o l d fast t h a t w h i c h is g o o d " (1 T h e s s a l o n i a n s 5 : 2 1 ) . The wise Solomon asserted that to judge a matter b e f o r e h e a r i n g it is not w i s e . (See P r o v e r b s 1 8 : 1 3 . ) Let us t h e n refer t o t h e w o r d of t h e L o r d , w h i c h is t h e e n d of a n y a r g u m e n t , a n d s e e w h a t t h e t e a c h ings of t h e g r e a t C r e a t o r a r e . S p e a k i n g to J o b , o n e of t h e a n c i e n t w r i t e r s of t h e B i b l e , he s a y s : " W h o Is this t h a t d a r k e n e t h c o u n s e l without knowledge?

" G i r d u p n o w t h y l o i n s like a m a n ; f o r I will d e m a n d of t h e e , a n d a n s w e r t h o u m e . " W h e r e w a s t t h o u w h e n I laid t h e f o u n d a t i o n s of the earth? . . . " W h e n t h e m o r n i n g s t a r s s a n g t o g e t h e r , a n d all t h e s o n s of G o d s h o u t e d f o r j o y ? " ( J o b 3 8 : 2 - 4 , 7 ) . Job certainly must have been s o m e w h e r e w h e n t h e " f o u n d a t i o n s of t h e e a r t h " w e r e laid, or w h y t h e question? There was doubtless more meaning to the w o r d s when all the sons of God shouted for joy t h a n o n e at first s u p p o s e s . T h e r e a d e r a s k s , " W h o w e r e t h e s e s o n s of G o d ? " L u k e , in listing t h e g e n e a l o g y of t h e h u m a n family, gives the necessary information on t h e s u b j e c t : " W h i c h w a s t h e s o n of E n o s , w h i c h w a s t h e s o n of S e t h , w h i c h w a s t h e s o n of A d a m , which was the son of God" ( L u k e 3 : 3 8 ; italics a d d e d ) . But let us t u r n t o a n o t h e r t e x t . O n e of t h e a n c i e n t writers says, " T h e n shall the dust return to the earth as It w a s : a n d t h e spirit s h a l l return u n t o G o d w h o g a v e i t " ( E c c l e s i a s t e s 1 2 : 7 ; italics a d d e d ) . H o w w o u l d it be p o s s i b l e t o r e t u r n t o a p l a c e , point, or l o c a l i t y t h a t w e h a d n e v e r v i s i t e d ? H o w c o u l d w e r e t u r n t o G o d u n l e s s w e h a d o n c e b e e n in his p r e s e n c e ? T h e l o g i c a l c o n c l u s i o n is u n a v o i d a b l e : to e n a b l e us t o return t o h i m , w e m u s t h a v e o n c e e n j o y e d his a s s o c i a t i o n , w h i c h m u s t h a v e b e e n in a premortal state, before w e b e c a m e c l o t h e d with this b o d y of f l e s h a n d b o n e s . Again, w e find that the Apostles must have had s o m e c o n c e p t i o n of p r e m o r t a l life, j u d g i n g f r o m t h e i r q u e s t i o n t o J e s u s : " M a s t e r , w h o d i d s i n , this m a n , o r his p a r e n t s , t h a t h e w a s b o r n b l i n d ? " ( J o h n 9 : 2 ) . 2


It is e v i d e n t t h a t t h e q u e s t i o n in t h e m i n d s of t h e A p o s t l e s w a s not w h e t h e r a m a n could sin p r e v i o u s t o his e x i s t e n c e in t h e f l e s h , but w h e t h e r t h i s p a r t i c u l a r m a n h a d s i n n e d or not. W r i t i n g to t h e H e b r e w s , Paul s a y s , " F u r t h e r m o r e w e h a v e h a d f a t h e r s of o u r f l e s h w h i c h c o r r e c t e d us, a n d w e g a v e t h e m r e v e r e n c e : s h a l l w e not m u c h r a t h e r be in s u b j e c t i o n u n t o t h e F a t h e r of s p i r i t s , a n d live?" (Hebrews 12:9). W e here gain the information as to w h o the sons of G o d w e r e w h o s h o u t e d f o r j o y in t h e b e g i n n i n g . W e a l s o l e a r n t h e r e a s o n w h y w e a d d r e s s h i m as " o u r Father, w h i c h art in h e a v e n " ( M a t t h e w 6 : 9 ) . T h i s is t o d i s t i n g u i s h h i m f r o m t h e f a t h e r of o u r e a r t h l y t a b e r n a c l e s . In o t h e r w o r d s , he is t h e F a t h e r of spirits in t h e s a m e s e n s e t h a t o u r e a r t h l y f a t h e r s a r e t h e f a t h e r s of o u r b o d i e s of f l e s h a n d b o n e s . HEN death o c c u r s , w e bury the earthly body, which d e c o m p o s e s and mingles w i t h t h e e l e m e n t s s u r r o u n d i n g its p l a c e of d e p o s i t . B u t w h a t of t h e spirit, w h i c h " r e t u r n s u n t o G o d w h o gave it"? W h e n J e s u s a p p e a r e d t o his d i s c i p l e s after his resurrection, " t h e y w e r e terrified and affrighted, and s u p p o s e d that they had seen a spirit." B u t he c o r r e c t e d t h e m , s a y i n g , " H a n d l e m e , a n d s e e ; f o r a spirit h a t h not f l e s h a n d b o n e s , a s y e s e e me h a v e . " (See Luke 2 4 : 3 6 - 4 3 . ) F r o m t h e s e w o r d s w e m a y g a t h e r that m a n , w h i l e e x i s t i n g a s a spirit, w a s not c l o t h e d w i t h flesh a n d b o n e s , but n e v e r t h e l e s s e x i s t e d in t h e e x a c t s h a p e a n d f o r m t h a t he n o w p o s s e s s e s . He h a d e y e s t o s e e , e a r s t o hear, a n d m a n y o t h e r f a c u l t i e s w i t h w h i c h e a r t h l y m a n is e n d o w e d . A l s o he w a s d o u b t l e s s in p o s s e s s i o n of i n t e l l i g e n c e a n d m a n y q u a l i t i e s t h a t e n n o b l e m a n . He h a d t h e ability t o m o v e f r o m p l a c e t o p l a c e , t o i n c r e a s e in k n o w l e d g e , a n d t o p e r f o r m c e r t a i n d u t i e s t h a t he w a s c a l l e d u p o n t o d o in t h a t s p h e r e of a c t i o n . A n u n e m b o d i e d spirit is o n e t h a t h a s not y e t t a k e n u p o n itself a b o d y . A n e m b o d i e d spirit is o n e d w e l l i n g in t h e f l e s h . A d i s e m b o d i e d spirit is o n e t h a t h a s p a s s e d t h r o u g h t h i s s t a g e of e x i s t e n c e a n d h a s laid its b o d y in t h e g r a v e — t h e spirit a n d b o d y t o be f i n a l l y t a k e n u p a n d a g a i n u n i t e d , n e v e r m o r e t o be separated.

HE w o r d of f f i e L o r d t o J e r e m i a h w a s : " B e f o r e I f o r m e d t h e e in t h e belly I k n e w t h e e ; a n d b e f o r e t h o u earnest f o r t h o u t of t h e w o m b I s a n c t i f i e d thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nat i o n s " ( J e r e m i a h 1:5). T h i s is t h e s u r e w o r d of t h e L o r d r e l a t i n g t o o n e of t h e c h i l d r e n of m e n w h o w a s but a n e x a m p l e of t h e rest of m a n k i n d . In t h i s p a r t i c u l a r c a s e , t h e f a c t is m a d e k n o w n that for g o o d a n d s u f f i c i e n t r e a s o n s o u r c o m m o n Father in H e a v e n o r d a i n e d o n e of his c h i l d r e n to a c e r t a i n o f f i c e prior to s e n d i n g h i m d o w n upon the earth. H a v i n g g a i n e d t h e c o n f i d e n c e of his F a t h e r w h i l e in his first or p r e m o r t a l s t a t e , he w a s o r d a i n e d t o a h i g h a n d holy c a l l i n g p r e v i o u s t o his life u p o n t h e e a r t h . W e learn f r o m t h e s c r i p t u r e s t h a t t h i s c o n f i d e n c e w a s not m i s p l a c e d . W e l e a r n t h a t in h o n o r he filled his m i s s i o n a n d w a s t r u e to t h e t r u s t p l a c e d in h i m . He d i d not t u r n a w a y f r o m t h e line of d u t y , a l t h o u g h m a n y o b s t a c l e s w e r e p l a c e d in h i s w a y — o b s t a c l e s that w o u l d h a v e a p p a l l e d a less s t o u t heart. In r e v i e w i n g J e r e m i a h ' s life, t h e r e a d e r s h o u l d be c a u t i o u s not to c o n f u s e t h e p r i n c i p l e of f o r e o r d i n a t i o n w i t h t h e p r i n c i p l e of p r e d e s t i n a t i o n , f o r t h e r e is a b r o a d d i s t i n c t i o n b e t w e e n t h e t w o . A m a n m a y be f o r e o r d a i n e d — s e t a p a r t or c o m m a n d e d t o d o a c e r t a i n w o r k — y e t he r e t a i n s his a g e n c y in t h e matter: he has t h e o p t i o n as t o w h e t h e r or not he will p e r f o r m t h e d u t y a s s i g n e d t o h i m . If a m a n w e r e p r e d e s t i n e d t o d o c e r t a i n w o r k , he w o u l d h a v e n o c h o i c e but t o d o t h a t w o r k . N o t h a v i n g a n y c h o i c e , he w o u l d not i n c u r t h e r e s p o n s i b i l i t y f o r his o w n a c t i o n s , n o r c o u l d he c o n t r o l t h e m ; he w o u l d be c o n t r o l l e d by t h e p o w e r t h a t p r e d e s t i n e d h i m . W h i l e J e r e m i a h w a s f o r e o r d a i n e d t o be a p r o p h e t t o t h e n a t i o n s , t h e s c r i p t u r e s d o not s a y t h a t he w a s p r e d e s t i n e d t o fill f h e o f f i c e of a p r o p h e t . HE p r i n c i p l e of p r e m o r t a l life is i l l u s t r a t e d p l a i n l y in t h e life of o u r Savior, w h o t h u s s p o k e t o t h e p e o p l e : " W h a t a n d if y e shall s e e t h e S o n of m a n a s c e n d u p w h e r e he w a s b e f o r e ? " ( J o h n 6 : 6 2 ) .

A g a i n , he s p o k e : " A n d n o m a n h a t h a s c e n d e d u p t o h e a v e n , but he t h a t c a m e d o w n f r o m h e a v e n " (John 3:13). T o all h u m a n a p p e a r a n c e s J e s u s r e s e m b l e d v e r y

m u c h t h e rest of t h e c h i l d r e n of o u r c o m m o n Father. The resemblance was so close that those around him failed to see any contrast between him and o r d i n a r y m e n . T h e y i n q u i r e d of e a c h o t h e r : " I s not t h i s t h e c a r p e n t e r ' s s o n ? is n o t his m o t h e r c a l l e d M a r y ? a n d his b r e t h r e n , J a m e s , a n d J o s e s , a n d Simon, and Judas?" (Matthew 13:55). Let us a s k o u r s e l v e s , " I s it s o difficult t o c o m p r e h e n d o u r o w n p r e m o r t a l life w h e n t h a t of J e s u s is s o plainly t a u g h t , a n d also t h a t of m a n y of t h e b i b l i c a l c h a r a c t e r s of w h o m w e r e a d ? " P a u l , t h e g r e a t a p o s t l e , s p e a k i n g of himself, s a y s , " I n h o p e of e t e r n a l life, w h i c h G o d , t h a t c a n n o t lie, promised before ttie world began" ( T i t u s 1:2; italics added). H e r e w a s a p r o m i s e of e t e r n a l life m a d e t o Paul " b e f o r e the world b e g a n " — c o n d i t i o n e d upon o b e d i e n c e , as w a s s a i d t o C a i n in f o r m e r t i m e s : " I f t h o u d o e s t w e l l , shalt t h o u not be a c c e p t e d ? " (Genesis 4:7). N o t w i t h s t a n d i n g t h i s p r o m i s e , Paul w a s u n d e r t h e n e c e s s i t y of p e r f o r m i n g c e r t a i n d u t i e s to e n a b l e h i m to claim the promise made. After being stricken with blindness on the w a y to Damascus, and hearing the v o i c e of t h e r i s e n R e d e e m e r , he w a s t o l d t o " a r i s e , a n d g o into t h e c i t y , a n d it shall be t o l d t h e e w h a t thou must d o " (Acts 9:6). A f t e r f a s t i n g a n d p r a y e r , he w a s v i s i t e d at t h e e n d of t h r e e d a y s by o n e A n a n i a s , w h o h a d b e e n c o m m a n d e d by t h e L o r d , in a v i s i o n , t o visit P a u l , a n d w a s f u r t h e r m o r e t o l d t h a t he w a s a " c h o s e n v e s s e l " or, in o t h e r w o r d s , o n e t o w h o m t h e L o r d h a d m a d e promises before the world began and w h o had a mission to perform before "Gentiles, a n d kings, and the c h i l d r e n of I s r a e l " ( A c t s 9 : 1 5 ) . A n a n i a s ' s q u e s t i o n w a s , " A n d n o w w h y tarriest t h o u ? a r i s e , a n d b e baptized, and w a s h away thy s i n s , c a l l i n g o n t h e n a m e of t h e L o r d " ( A c t s 2 2 : 1 6 ; italics a d d e d ) . M a n y c o u l d h a v e b e e n s e l e c t e d , but for t h e reader's consideration we have presented only a few of t h e b i b l i c a l e v i d e n c e s of m a n ' s p r e m o r f a l life. W e feel that t h o s e that have been a d v a n c e d here are sufficient to s h o w conclusively that the Latter-day S a i n t belief in this p r i n c i p l e is f o u n d e d u p o n holy scriptures. Their ideas only coincide with the p r o p h ets a n d s e r v a n t s of G o d in all a g e s w h o h a v e a l l u d e d to this subject. H a v i n g a n s w e r e d t h e q u e s t i o n of w h e r e w e c a m e f r o m , let us n o w c o n s i d e r w h y w e a r e h e r e .

Why We Are Here

w i s e C r e a t o r m u s t tiave h a d a g r e a t p u r p o s e in c r e a t i n g t h e e a r t h a n d in p l a c i n g his c h i l d r e n u p o n it t o p a s s t h r o u g h a t i m e of t e s t i n g . A k n o w l e d g e of t h e C r e a t o r ' s p u r p o s e e n a b l e s t h e h u m a n f a m i l y t o a c t w e l l t h e i r part. Let us e x a m ine w h a t he h a d in v i e w . O n e o b j e c t of m a n ' s e x i s t e n c e u p o n t h e e a r t h is t o o b t a i n a b o d y of f l e s h a n d b o n e s . It is n e c e s s a r y for m a n f o l e a r n by a c t u a l e x p e r i e n c e t h e d i f f e r e n c e b e t w e e n g o o d a n d evil. A s G o d said of o u r first p a r e n t s , " B e h o l d , t h e m a n is b e c o m e as o n e of u s , t o k n o w g o o d a n d e v i l " (Genesis 3:22). W h e n m a n t a s t e s t h e bitter, it e n a b l e s h i m t o appreciate the sweet. W h e n a man teels the effects of s i c k n e s s , h e m o r e fully a p p r e c i a t e s t h e g r e a t b o o n of h e a l t h . B y f e e l i n g t h e e f f e c t s of p a i n he c a n e n j o y t h e i m m u n i t y t h e r e f r o m . He m u s t f e e l t h e i n f l u e n c e a n d p o w e r of d e a t h b e f o r e he c a n a p p r e c i a t e e t e r n a l life. He m u s t c o m p r e h e n d t h e e f f e c t s of sin b e f o r e he c a n e n j o y t h e rest p r o m i s e d t o t h e f a i t h f u l . M a n c a n g a i n m a n y e x p e r i e n c e s in t h e f l e s h f h a t he c a n n o t o t h e r w i s e o b t a i n . T h e r e a r e o r d i n a n c e s t o be p e r f o r m e d a n d e t e r n a l u n i o n s to be p e r f e c t e d ; in t h e w i s d o m of t h e g r e a t C r e a t o r t h e s e m u s t b e effected on the earth. A m o n g the main requirements g i v e n t o m a n d u r i n g his e x i s t e n c e u p o n t h e e a r t h a r e b a p t i s m for t h e r e m i s s i o n of s i n s a n d m a r r i a g e for e t e r n i t y . M a n ' s sole d u t y is not t o c a r e f o r h i m s e l f a l o n e , t o selfishly n e g l e c t his f e l l o w m e n a n d s e e k w o r d l y f a m e at o t h e r s ' e x p e n s e , but r a t h e r it is t o keep G o d ' s c o m m a n d m e n t s a n d to love his fellowmen (see Ecclesiastes 12:13; Matthew 22:36-40). "Whatsoever ye w o u l d that men should d o to y o u , d o ye e v e n s o t o t h e m " ( M a t t h e w 7 : 1 2 ) . T h i s is t h e G o l d e n Rule, by w h i c h m e n s h o u l d be g o v e r n e d in t h i s life. In brief, a m a n h a s to p r e p a r e h i m s e l f for a f u t u r e e x a l t a t i o n in t h e e t e r n i t i e s t o c o m e . He is c a l l e d u p o n to " w o r k o u t [ h i s ] o w n s a l v a t i o n w i t h f e a r a n d trembling" (Philippians 2:12). T h e w o r k a m a n d o e s in t h i s life will i n f l u e n c e t h e life to c o m e . B y o b e d i e n c e t o t h e p r i n c i p l e s of t h e g o s p e l of J e s u s C h r i s t , he p r e p a r e s h i m s e l f f o r t h e g l o r i o u s e x a l t a t i o n h e l d in r e s e r v e f o r t h o s e w h o w o r s h i p G o d in spirit a n d t r u t h . A s J e s u s s a i d t o his apostles, "In my Father's house are many mansions: . . . I go to prepare a place for y o u " (John 14:2). 6


A wise Creator placed the human family on earth for a great purpose


H a v i n g l e a r n e d \A/hy w e a r e h e r e , let us n e x t e x a m i n e t h e n a t u r e of t h e d u t i e s w e a r e c a l l e d u p o n t o perform. Faith Jk m a n m u s t h a v e f a i t h in t h e u l t i m a t e result XJ| b e f o r e he c a n d i l i g e n t l y p e r f o r m a n y w o r k . # N o f a r m e r w o u l d p l a n t u n l e s s he e x p e c t e d t o r e a p ; no b u i l d e r w o u l d b u i l d u n l e s s he e x p e c t e d t o i n h a b i t ; no s p e c u l a t o r w o u l d invest u n l e s s he e x p e c t e d to i n c r e a s e his m e a n s ; no j o u r n e y w o u l d be a t t e m p t e d u n l e s s t h e r e e x i s t e d t h e h o p e of r e a c h ing t h e d e s t i n a t i o n . L i k e w i s e , t h e c o m m a n d m e n t s of G o d a r e o b e y e d o n l y by t h o s e w h o h a v e f a i t h t h a t b l e s s i n g s will f o l l o w t h e i r o b e d i e n c e . W h e n w e u n d e r s t a n d this idea, w e c a n c o m prehend the Apostle Paul's assertion to the H e b r e w s : " B u t w i t h o u t f a i t h it is i m p o s s i b l e to p l e a s e [ G o d ] : for he t h a t c o m e t h t o G o d m u s t b e l i e v e t h a t he is, a n d t h a t he is a r e w a r d e r of t h e m t h a t d i l i g e n t l y seek h i m " (Hebrews 11:6). W e f i n d t h e a c t i v e w o r k i n g s of t h e p r i n c i p l e of faith in t h e m a n y c a s e s of h e a l i n g p e r f o r m e d by o u r Savior. " T h y f a i t h h a t h m a d e t h e e w h o l e , " t h e S a v i o r oft e n said t o t h o s e he h e a l e d (fTlatthew 9 : 2 2 ; L u k e 17:19; 18:42). W e also find him speaking to the A p o s t l e s in t h e s t r o n g e s t t e r m s a b o u t t h e i r l a c k of faith. On one o c c a s i o n they c a m e to him with the q u e s t i o n " W h y c o u l d not w e c a s t h i m o u t ? " A n d J e s u s s a i d u n t o t h e m . s w e r e d a n d s a i d u n t o t h e m , A n evil a n d a d u l t e r o u s generation seeketh after a sign" (Matthew 12:38-39). W h a t w a s t r u e of t h e g e n e r a t i o n w a s t r u e of t h e i n d i v i d u a l ; w h a t w a s t r u e t h e n is t r u e n o w . T h i s p l a c e s s i g n s e e k e r s in a m o s t u n e n v i a b l e p o s i t i o n , but d o u b t l e s s w h e r e t h e y j u s t l y b e l o n g . Future Existence E G A R D I N G t h e s u b j e c t of a f u t u r e e x i s t e n c e , t h e r e is a g r e a t d i v e r s i t y of o p i n i o n , a n d f r o m time to time, almost every possible conjecture h a s h e l d t h e a t t e n t i o n of t h e h u m a n f a m i l y . J u d g i n g by t h e a c c e p t e d c r e e d of t h e C h r i s t i a n w o r l d , t h e r e is a n a l m o s t u n i v e r s a l belief in f u t u r e p u n i s h m e n t . T h e f e a r of f u t u r e p u n i s h m e n t is u s e d as a m i g h t y p o w e r t o i n f l u e n c e t h e m i n d of m a n in a r e l i g i o u s s e n s e . H E w o r d of t h e L o r d t h r o u g h t h e p r o p h e t IVIalachi w a s : " B e h o l d , I will s e n d y o u Elijah t h e p r o p h e t b e f o r e t h e c o m i n g of t h e g r e a t a n d d r e a d f u l d a y of t h e L o r d : A n d he shall t u r n t h e heart of t h e f a t h e r s t o t h e c h i l d r e n , a n d t h e h e a r t of t h e c h i l d r e n t o t h e i r f a t h e r s , lest I c o m e a n d s m i t e t h e earth with a c u r s e " (Malachi 4 : 5 - 6 ) . H e r e w a s a w o r k for t h e t r a n s l a t e d p r o p h e t ( E l i j a h ) t o p e r f o r m at s o m e f u t u r e t i m e . T h e f e a r f u l c o n s e q u e n c e of not c o m p l y i n g w i t h his w o r d w a s placed before us: the Lord w o u l d " s m i t e the earth w i t h a c u r s e . " T h e n a t u r e of t h a t w o r k is briefly set f o r t h a s t u r n i n g t h e h e a r t of t h e f a t h e r s t o t h e c h i l d r e n a n d t h a t of t h e c h i l d r e n t o t h e f a t h e r s . T h e A p o s t l e Paul a s s e r t s t h a t " t h e y w i t h o u t us s h o u l d not be m a d e p e r f e c t " ( H e b r e w s 1 1 : 4 0 ) . In other w o r d s , their salvation was necessary to our h a p p i n e s s or p e r f e c t i o n . Jesus, speaking to N i c o d e m u s , said, "Verily, verily, I s a y u n t o t h e e . E x c e p t a m a n be b o r n of w a t e r a n d of t h e Spirit, h e c a n n o t e n t e r into t h e k i n g d o m of G o d " (John 3:5). T h e r e a d e r a s k s , " B u t h o w c a n a spirit be b o r n of w a t e r , or b e b a p t i z e d in t h e w a t e r ? Punishment?

N c o n c l u s i o n , let u s e x a m i n e a n o t h e r q u e s t i o n t h a t h a s d o u b t l e s s c r o s s e d t h e m i n d of t h e r e a d e r — t h e q u e s t i o n of f u t u r e p u n i s h m e n t . If p r e a c h i n g t o t h e spirits, b r i n g i n g t h e m t o a k n o w l e d g e of t h e t r u t h , a n d b e i n g b a p t i z e d f o r t h e m r e l e a s e s t h e m f r o m t h e i r p r i s o n , it l o g i c a l l y f o l l o w s that there must be an e n d to future punishment. W e h e a r t h e q u e s t i o n : " D o not t h e s c r i p t u r e s s a y t h a t it is ' e t e r n a l p u n i s h m e n t ' a n d ' e v e r l a s t i n g p u n i s h m e n t ' ? " Y e s , but let us not put a p r i v a t e interpretation on these terms. Let us correctly understand their meaning.

In o t h e r w o r d s , it is t h e n a m e of t h e p u n i s h m e n t G o d inflicts, he b e i n g e t e r n a l in his n a t u r e . Whosoever, therefore, receives God's punishm e n t r e c e i v e s e t e r n a l p u n i s h m e n t , w h e t h e r it is e n d u r e d o n e h o u r , o n e d a y , o n e w e e k , o n e y e a r , or an a g e . " A n d t h e y w e r e j u d g e d e v e r y m a n a c c o r d i n g to their w o r k s " (Revelation 20:13). S o m e shall be beaten with f e w and some with many stripes. (See Luke 1 2 : 4 7 - 4 8 . ) Here we have plainly set f o r t h t h e f a c t t h a t all m e n a r e not p u n i s h e d alike, that s o m e receive a greater punishment than others. A s t h e i r w o r k s a r e , s o s h a l l be t h e p u n i s h m e n t a w a r d e d t h e m : " A n d I saw the dead, small and great, stand before G o d ; and the books were o p e n e d : a n d a n o t h e r b o o k w a s o p e n e d , w h i c h is t h e b o o k of life: a n d t h e d e a d w e r e j u d g e d out of t h o s e t h i n g s w h i c h w e r e w r i t t e n in t h e b o o k s , a c c o r d i n g t o their w o r k s .
