I
t’s been one of those years, a year of loss and reflection, a bittersweet year. Last year was my final year of my father’s journey on this earth as he slowly succumbed to the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease brought on by a traumatic brain injury and multiple strokes. Many may not be aware, but my primary job when I started the Vintage Directory was as caregiver to my father. Before care-giving I promoted public events most notably Pet Fest and the health*beauty spa show. I reduced my work load and retired Pet Fest when my father needed my full-time care. As my father’s disease progressed, I had to reduce my career stress levels and decided to retire the spa event as well. What to do with the extra time during the long dark winters sitting with a shadow of what was my father? While I was learning to love the childlike person he had become, I longed for something to keep me connected to the outside world that would be less stress and pressure than promoting huge events. I loved vintage and have been into antiques and old treasures since I was a kid. My mother was a collector of fine antiques with an eye for repurposing, she even co-owned a folk art gallery when I was in preschool. As I looked for a niche, or a need in our vintage and antique community I noticed cards and fliers for antique shops and vintage markets scattered across stores’ counter-tops. This industry needs an organizer! An organizer I am, not of stuff, my office is a hot mess, but an organizer of ideas and people. With my mostly home-bound status I decided the best fit for me was to publish a directory of things I loved!
In 2014, I arranged the concept of the Vintage Directory and presented it to a few shops on Monroe, Spokane’s largest Antique district. The idea was well-received, and I specifically remember the encouragement from Tossed and Found who booked my first back page. That was 2014, now 5 years later into my 6th issue the Vintage Directory is going strong. Many advertisers remember my father who for years was my traveling companion while I delivered papers. He loved a good road trip, and like young children, individuals with dementia are soothed by long car rides and being on the move. Dad loved getting out and seeing new places and I took him with me to vintage markets out of town until he lost mobility in 2017. One of our favorite stops was Foster’s Crossing in Sandpoint, Idaho. We would have lunch at Cafe Bodega while I dropped off papers and visited with the shopkeepers, my father would munch a handmade sandwich and slurp homemade soup in the rustic and homey cafe while I hauled in bundles of papers to eager advertisers. Sandpoint has a special place in my heart as I have spent summers on our family property on Lake Pend O’reille for as long as I can remember. Sandpoint is a true jewel in the Gem state, it is my happy place, a place filled with childhood memories and time with my father. This year’s editorial is a feature on Sandpoint and the antique and vintage shops in town you must visit on your next road trip.

T
he spring drive was beautiful, my eyes drank in the sights heading north through Idaho on Highway 95. The last half of my 90 mile trek from Spokane to Sandpoint, Idaho is filled with aspen groves, ponderosa pines, shimmering lakes, historic barns and hay fields ripening in the sun. The highway slowly gives way to the “Long Bridge” which takes me across the magnificent body of water curtained by the snow capped Selkirk Mountains. After crossing Lake Pend O’reille, I am greeted by the town of Sandpoint. The quaint, rustic downtown has the vibe of Wild West meets the Summer of Love. The downtown has a homey feel to it with boutiques craft breweries and local eateries lining the main street. Tucked neatly around the corner from downtown on Oak street in a nearly century old building attached to an antique train car is a treasure of a shop I was thrilled to find in town. Foster’s Crossing is the quintessential antique shop. The 1920s building was

purchased by Dick and Betsy Foster in 1978 and renamed Foster’s Crossing, 40 years later, their namesake would become synonymous with the North Idaho antiquing scene. Current owners David and Kate Luers take pride in keeping the Foster’s Crossing experience as charming as ever. On my treks through North Idaho delivering the Vintage Directory each winter I enjoy the ambiance of Cafe Bodega within Foster’s Crossing which possesses a distinct vibe with its original lift and pulley system, exposed beams, rustic wood floors and woodburning stove. While sipping my organic espresso, Mickey, their Australian Shepherd “shop dog” greets me with a friendly curiosity as I warm myself by a roaring fire in the wood burning stove. I experience a cozy woodsy sense of calm and belonging which only a town like Sandpoint Idaho can provide. The restaurant is down home, filled with rustic decor and curated furnishings. I am ready to eat, but I have to confess,
I am a food snob, if something is not made from scratch, I can sense it! When my meal arrives, I am pleased that the food served at this cafe is the real deal. My taste buds thank me for hearty homemade soup and sandwiches made in a kitchen that is situated in the original freezer from an old ice house. After lunch, I enjoy casually wandering through the century old building as the floor boards softly creak beneath my feet. The 12,000 square foot, three story shop is filled with salvaged goods, furniture, clothing, and dishes from when household items were made from natural materials and built to last. The stroll through the shop returns me to a time when craftsmanship was a cultural custom. Part store, part museum with its original post and beams, rustic wood floors and brick walls, Foster’s Crossing is a reminder of American ingenuity before the reign of plastics and computers. The destination shop features everything from antiques to yarn. I head to
the south end of the building that once housed the Kist Root Beer Bottling Company 90 years ago, and visit with Claudia Hon and Cathy Klontz co-owners of Oak Street Mercantile. The second shop inside the building features an eclectic mix of items ranging from vintage clothing and furniture to specially blended chalk and milk paints. The partners explain to me that they also welcome custom projects in addition to the antique, vintage and repurposed items in their shop. I continue my adventure in Sandpoint just a few blocks away from Foster’s Crossing. Nestled between the Pie Hut and a resale shop in and old co-op farm and country store building on Church Street is another collector’s shopping adventure. Marketplace Antiques is a 4,000 square foot treasure filled with finds. The store has something for everyone, featuring 16 vendors who scour the countryside for special finds, from authentic antiques to items gathered from every corner of the
world. After the morning in town, I say farewell to the town of Sandpoint and head to our lifelong piece of paradise on the opposite end of the railroad bridge from town. The winding rural road marked with stunning lake views gives way to forest as my truck lurches around the bends and bumps. Soon, the familiar driveway entrance greets me and my rig bounces down the steep driveway to the wooded hideaway. Sandpoint Idaho is my happy place. A place where woods and mountains meet water, where the past is kept alive even as the future changes the landscape. As I trek down the hand placed rock stairs laid by my grandmother, the scent of pine and cottonwood fill my nostrils and memories erupt in my mind. I think of my childhood and mostly my late father...Oh how he loved the woods, oh how he lived for the lake and its fishing! The old cabin still stands at the waterfront, built in the 1980s as our living quarters for the summer. Memories of my
childhood fill my thoughts, times before running water, plumbing, or electricity was installed on the property. The hippie lifestyle was alive and well with our family in the 1970s-1990s, we cooked over a wood fire on an old cast iron plate of some sort harvested near the railroad tracks and fashioned into a grill. My father was the outdoorsman, spending days running a chain saw or swinging a hammer breaking rocks to expand our waterfront living area. The town of Sandpoint and this special piece of property is my father’s legacy and will forever be in my heart. I hope everyone gets a chance to visit this beautiful little town, my happy place...

Tucked into a brick building build in 1921, in what was originally Quality Garage and Texaco Station, is Spokane’s Sprague Union District’s newest vintage shop which opened in February 2018. The owners; are excited to be in this historic building and location. Blue Cat Vintage offers a broad selection of eclectic items for all uses. Furniture and Decor are a large part of owners Janet and Nick Taylor’s presentation with everything from antique, mid century modern, vintage, newer and more. The couple loves being a part of the newly revitalized Sprague Union District in Spokane as the vibe is alive and growing. The new store is located in a walkable business community filled with other small retailers and services such as Boyd Walker Sewing, Two Women Vintage, Avenue Artifacts, ERA Vintage Home, Rail Creek Furniture, The Tin Roof, The Living Room Vintage, Benidito’s Brew Pub, and Union Tavern, University Mercantile, Sonnenburg’s Market & Deli, and Checkerboard Tavern, with new development coming to the area every day. In the center of Spokane’s historic downtown Hillyard, is the newest addition to this destination antique and vintage shopping district. Melissa and John Niece opened Vintage Mercantile & Auction in September 2018. In addition to an auction house, the shop boasts a variety of vendors who compliment each other with a variety of eclectic hand curated inventory. Vintage Mercantile and Auction specializes in helping customers downsize homes or liquidate collections, as well as keeping a log of in search of items to help collectors find that special item they have been searching for. Vintage Mercantile and Auction is located at 5005 N Market Street Spokane WA. Open Mon-Sat 10-5, Sun 11-5. After selling handmade recycled barn wood signs at craft fairs and farmer’s markets for numerous years, mother daughter team Laura and Samantha Garcia decided to put down roots and open a brick and mortar shop in Post Falls, ID. The women opened The Rusty Star in February 2018. In addition to antiques, collectibles and handcrafted gift items the shop boasts a beer, wine and cider bar for guests to enjoy and a one-of-a-kind design center where customers can walk in or schedule an appointment to design and craft their own sign. Participants pick colors, size, fonts, style of finish and unique saying. The owners are planning a television lounge to entertain part-
ners as customers craft, or explore the other local shops in the Post Falls Outlets where they are located. The Rusty Star is located at 4073 W Riverbend Ave Post Falls, ID and is open Monday 11-3, Tues-Friday 10-6, and Saturday 10-5 Deron and Janine Nicholson have always had a passion for vintage and antiques and dreamed of opening a home decor shop featuring items from the past. Janine’s brother Mitchell Flores who has a background as a pawnbroker mentioned that he wanted to open his own pawn shop. They soon partnered and pooled their talents, and Ye Olde Hock Shoppe was born July 2018. The unique business has the character and atmosphere of an old-fashioned hock shop with an interior furnished and decorated for an atmosphere of antiquity. Ye Olde Hock Shoppe buys, sells and loans on collectibles, art, and antiques as well as traditional items found in pawn shops. Ye Olde Hock Shoppe is located at 9315 E Trent Ave Spokane Valley, WA, Open Monday-Saturday 9-6, and Sunday 10-5. After taking over the vintage home decor shop, “Junk” two years ago, Matt and Mega Eatock were given the chance to open a second shop in Midtown, Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho. The couple jumped at the opportunity to bring a completely new and different concept to the area. Opening two shops directly across the street
from each other may seem strange to some, but it works quite well, as the new store, Lovely Chaos has a completely different boutique feel, and rather than compete with the farmhouse-style decor found at Junk, Lovely Chaos provides a wonderful complement, with an emphasis on the upcoming trend of modern bohostyle decor, clothing, and gifts, as well as beautifully refinished furniture and even more handmade items from local vendors. Since opening in November 2018, Lovely Chaos has been well-received by locals and Junk’s regular customers, for its “big city” feel. What was an old workshop with orange walls, a dirty concrete floor, and unflattering florescent lighting is now a bright, girly, glamorous space. Matt and Megan make a perfect team. Matt being that guy who can literally fix and problem solve just about anything, and Megan’s passion for interior design and making things pretty. The business owners love the small business vibe of the Midtown area of Coeur d’ Alene, sharing the street with other vintage and gift shops, restaurants, and a new coffee shop all within close walking distance, Midtown has come to life over the last couple years as a destination spot, where visitors can easily spend a whole day exploring all that 4th street has to offer.
