FLOODING

Heavy rain in the catchments of the Diamantina, Thomson and Barcoo River systems can lead to flooding of townships and rural properties down stream. Water movements from these rain events can take from several days to several weeks to reach affected towns downstream from these headwaters. This water is generally slow moving, therefore allowing sufficient time to prepare and activate emergency plans and evacuation arrangements if required. As this water flows down stream, it tends to spread outside of the river banks and can cause flooding to properties as it makes its way south. These rain events often restrict road access to towns and properties throughout the region. Unsealed roads become impassable for extended periods of time and most rural roads are comprised of black soil which becomes very boggy. Black soil roads can hold moisture for long periods of time and should not be driven on until they are completely dried out.

Fishing! THE NAMOI RIVER COVERS 42,000 SQUARE KILOMETRES and is a major tributary of the MurrayDarling Basin. These waters are home to the Murray Cod or ‘Goodoo’ to the traditional Gamilaraay/ Kamilaroi people. This iconic species is Australia’s largest native freshwater fish and is highly regarded by sport anglers the world over. Other native species stocked in these waters include Golden Perch, Silver Perch and Eel Tailed Catfish. Commonly used live baits include worms, freshwater yabbies or shrimp, however these species will often take specially designed artificial lures. Fishing tackle, bait traps and fishing licences can be purchased in the region. All information is available from the Narrabri Region Visitor Information Centre. Anglers are required to hold a current NSW Recreational Fishing Licence, and size and bag limits apply to each species. The practice of responsible fishing and catch-and-release ensures that these river populations continue to flourish for future generations to enjoy. What is the Kestrel West Project? Kestrel Coal Resources (Kestrel) has continued with initiating works and studies to assess the potential for the current mining operations to extend into parts of Mineral Development Licence (MDL)182. This project is an extension to current mining operations to optimise resources and utilise existing infrastructure. The project is referred to as Kestrel West because MDL182 is located immediately to the West of our current mining operations at the Kestrel Mine, adjoining Lilyvale Road. It is anticipated our current mining and resource extraction will be completed by approximately 2032. By extending operations into Kestrel West it will ensure the Kestrel Mine and associated operations can continue to invest in our local community and provide economic development opportunities for the next 25 years and beyond. These benefits include the ability to maintain secure and sustainable employment for our existing workforce, while continuing to deliver meaningful benefits to the Central Highlands community.
