CEO'S MESSAGE/NEW MEMBERS

The BCPhA has clearly communicated to the Minister of Health that we do not support such conduct.

Welcome to the newest members of the BCPhA!

We think there are some concrete steps that should be taken to ensure the government and public can continue to have confidence in the role community pharmacy plays in delivering this program to some of our province’s most vulnerable patients. In our view the current MMT training program for dispensing pharmacists is inadequate. We believe that the training should be significantly more vigorous than it is now and should include a system that ensures training has been successfully completed. We don’t think the current “self reporting” of completion of the training is adequate. Patients who are part of MMT are usually facing complex health and other issues. This supports the premise that additional training for dispensing pharmacists makes sense. We also believe there should be a regular recertification for pharmacists dispensing to MMT patients. Input needs to be gathered to determine what regularity for recertification would be appropriate. But such a program would help to ensure high practice standards would be maintained. And we believe the BCPhA should be tasked with the job of developing and delivering the training program. Our track record in injection training shows we can do this well. I believe that physicians, pharmacists, our colleges and the government need to work quickly and collaboratively to determine what steps need to be taken to ensure the MMT program is meeting the needs of the population it serves. Pharmacists and pharmacy owners have a role to play in not condoning bad behavior from their peers. If you see bad practice, call the College of Pharmacists and lodge a complaint. Community pharmacy needs to clearly show there is no support for illegal and unethical practice.
